  • Should you sharpen drill bits or buy new? If you asked me this a month ago, I probably bought new drills, because sharpen drill bits look so hard to do. But with this drill sharpening tool, everyone can sharpen drill bits. See how I build this drill sharpening jig in this video, and download the free plans to build your own drill bit sharpener for drill bit sharpening. This hand tools sharpening jig is the first one in the series to sharpen hand tools in my workshop. Follow me to see future updates.

    Hi
Again, This is a very good Jig.
What I really appreciate is that you didn't make a slick video, you have highlighted your search including the (logical) mistakes.
There are few RUclipsrs who show this, super.
I find this one really useful and cost effective, I really will build this one.
    Thanks for sharing.
Keep it safe, it is not over yet.

As I always tell people if it’s sharp enough to cut it’s better than it was. The main angles are the tip, you can cut anywhere between 115-140* and it will still cut and the relief angle has to be between 8 and 12 degrees.
Unless your a machinist the bit doesn’t have to be perfectly centred but it should be as close by eye as possible. You can make a bit cut up to a mil or so oversized if you don’t pay attention.
I also find if all your drilling is wood and aluminum at high speed you can actually go slightly more aggressive with the relief angle to increase drilling speed.

For rigidity reasons the drill should not extend out more than 3/4". 1725 rpm should be the maximum. 1200 rpm is even better when driven by belt. I use a silicon carbide grinding wheel because it will slowly break down and never get dull. The trick is to always travel the full width of the wheel.
