I never put much thought into picks either but I got a pack after you talked about them on Cheddar's channel. They are great. That soft feeling without being soft is something I can't even explain. Between that and the beveled edge they just seem to glide across the strings.

Picks have a pretty noticeable effect on both tone and on playability. The bevelled edges on these picks is great for anything involving speed. I'm learning to do pick slanting (both upward and downward - check out Troy Grady) and these picks are sort of necessary for that.

I went to get my standard Dunlop picks and they were out. Grabbed a bag of these, and they are amazing. I recently tried a Dragon Heart pick, and hated it, even though a bunch of channels posted rave reviews. This pick is my favorite by far. Your Excalibur reference is perfect, it's exactly what I felt when I tried it for the first time.

I’m playing jazz, and cannot deal with those tiny ‘jazz’ picks. That said, I’m using the 1.5mm Prodigy Sharp and it’s awesome. I’ve been using pointy picks for decades, and these are the best yet. They set the stage for very precise picking.

I happened across a small selection of Winspear picks in a used guitar case - they're bizarrely comfy and grippy and the notes just sing. Made me a believer, and then I went and looked at the prices to get some more... woof.

Hey Ian I’m going to check them out. I have in the past used picks from a company called V picks. They are made out of acrylics and as they heat up they get slightly sticky to the touch and are also precisely beveled. I’m hoping the Ernie Ball picks are similar but hopefully cost less. I never mentioned the V picks to you because I was aware that you weren’t that picky. Haha

    • @StichMethodGuitar

Hey Dean, believe it or not. I had a V pick.... it’s somewhere there in that jar.... not saying anything bad... the Prodigy just felt right. Rock on

It’s funny Ian, when I first found your channel one of the first things I asked for help with was holding onto my pick. It was always turning and falling. I’ve gotten to the point were I could use any pick and it didn’t really bother me anymore except at the end of freebird. Here we are full circle.

So, went to the local Sam Ash a couple of days ago and picked up a bag of the Prodigy Mini and have to say I love them. One problem, they only had the mini and those are just too small for me. I also bought the Everlast and those just don't have the feel of the Prodigy. The don't have the non-slip or beveled edges. BUT I did learn that I like the feel of a thick pick! I've always played picks of the thinner side but as far as feel goes these are great. They do have a slightly warmer sound but a little tone tweak and it's all good. As soon as I see the larger Prodigy I'll be picking those up. Minis don't seem to affect the tone as much as the Everlast.

my problem was with larger picks is that after a while the pick would shift and I would be playing with the SIDE of the pick. Im a 40 year old beginner but when I tried the smaller picks that problem went away and I felt more in control. anyway ty Stich

I have some of the 1.5mm Prodigy picks. I like them quite a bit, but I hardly touch them since I got my Hell Guitars Super Blacks. Hell bevels the picks at the edge you’re supposed to play, so the pick has an almost imperceptible twist to it. I personally love the Hell 2.0mm as well as the Jazz pick prototype they sent me for free. If you don’t know them, they’re out of Japan. So far as I know, you can only order the picks directly, but they ship for free-plus you get a personalized, hand-written note & a follow-up email to let you know they’ve shipped. I doubt I’ll ever pick up anything else ever again. As good as the Prodigy picks are, the Hell picks are smoother & faster. I also think they have a better tone (to my ear, anyway).

I finally got one in the post. I made the mistake of clicking on the mini and it doesn't seem to have the serration on the bevelled edge. Don't know if it is all that great after all but I will give it a fair use.

I've changed my mind about these Ernie Ball Prodigy picks. After a good trial period, it's the only pick I want to use. I think what makes it good is the material. A local manufacturer has conveyor belt parts cast with Polyoxymethylene (same material with lots of names). I bought a whole sheet for the price of 2 picks and I'm experimenting with shapes and bevel angles.

I haven't been that picky about picks since I took up the guitar again a few years ago. When I was a younger person I used to go over to my guitar teacher's house and he always had picks laying around with beveled edges that he beveled himself with a file. They were better than ones without the bevel to me.
