    The SBGX347G is stunning. I'm still wishing for a sub 37mm spring drive. Maybe a trimmed manual 9R with a reduced power reserve (2 days is plenty).

    Now only if they could slim down the thickness. The manual wind is a good start but I’d want the same slimness in an automatic. I have a few of the 70s 36mm models and they had them slim back then. Don’t know why they cant do the same now.

    Wonderful summary!
    I’m living in munich germany, looking for a watch to celebrate my 40th birthday this summer. I love GS but I’m also blessed with a slender wrist (16,5cm) and see that I need to get-a-testin’!
    Disclaimer: Even though I’ll likely land on the snowflake or a used 37 SBGH311 (to save some money, not unlimited budget sadly).

    Thanks for this overview! I love GS since a few years and currently own three of them. My last purchase was the 34mm SBGX347 hat you've already presented a few months (years?) back. This was the trigger for me to buy it as I always wanted to have a smaller GS in my collection. And with that elegant and timeless appearance I really wanted to go small. I do not regret my decision! It's absolutely beautiful. Wearing it on my quite small 16-16,5 cm (around 6.5 inches) wrist.

    My favorite GS is the SBGX347, the cap on the seconds hand is such a great detail that almost no one else does, even though it looks much better. It seems they use it mostly on quartz though unfortunately. The sakura-wakaba is also great but I prefer no date.

    Another one you missed (which is a sold out LE, so probably why you didn't have it to show given that these seem to all be new, tagged watches) is SBGW289, which is available at a reasonable price on the preowned market. It's the same size/case as SBGW299 shown at 7:00, but it has a light pink textured dial which is *chef's kiss*.

  • @FfortheT

    Missing the SGBX349 which you had shown in an earlier video, can't get that blue out of my head...

    • @Agent0Smith
      @Agent0Smith 9 месяцев назад

      I had that watch, but sold it to get the SBGW299. The SBGX349 is a nice watch, but I wanted a dark blue, not the kinda royal blue with a hint of purple.
      The SBGW299 is exactly the shade of dark blue I was looking for, and the dial's radial pattern is also more interesting.
      The SBGX349 did look great on a steel bracelet, though.

    I have a sbgm221 that I got when i finished grad school. It was my choice as I felt it was the most bang for the buck watch at the time. As time has passed i find it to be too thick and not wearable as a dressy number. Tim Mosso said it could easily slide under a cuff, maybe his cuff but not mine. Lesson learnt. These though are much more to my taste.

    • @Agent0Smith
      @Agent0Smith 9 месяцев назад

      That's exactly why I bought the SBGW235, with a similar dial colour - I knew the SBGM221 would just be too big and thick.

    Would love to see a range of daily-wear spring drives (date window, bracelet, traditionally colored dials) in 37mm like the SBGX355G you profile. Are spring drives thicker than usual, so that when combined with a rotor they make smaller cases too chunky? As far as I know the smallest spring drives are 38mm and manual.

  • @Chrissepisje

    Nice video with a display of watches with a civilised size. I own an SGBW231, which is sort of the OG "smaller" GS, and it's a wonderful size.
    That said, I can't believe we're omitting the SBGX261 and 263 here. They are the basic model, but super wearable. Picked up a 265 before they become rare, and am over the moon with it.

    • @Agent0Smith
      @Agent0Smith 9 месяцев назад

      Nice, I own the fraternal twin of your watch - the SBGW235.
      I also bought a SBGX065 like your 265, but I decided to swap it for a similar Citizen AQ4100-57L (partly because i wanted the lightweight titanium). Those SBGX models are really nicely sized, though.

    Those SBGH343G and SBGH341G are stunting. A unique case shape, but the thickness. I wish GS would bring back their thin Manuel-wind watches. 36-38 is such an underappreciated market.

    I covet Grand Seiko and yearn to own one. That said, it always weirds me out a little to see a stunning GS with quartz movement. Granted, the second hand hits the second marks dead on (or certainly should) the way quartz was always meant to be. But Seiko makes sweep second quartz movements, which i always prefer over the one second tick kind. I wonder if GS is going to start putting those types of movements in.

    Thank you so much for taking this initiative... Watches are not a necessity of course, people buy them coz they enjoy them and are passionate about them... If it doesn't look right and looks large and bulky and clumsy, there's no point in wearing that watch even if it is very well built and beautiful etc... Most Swiss watchmakers are introducing smaller variants of their most popular models, I feel GS is still not reacting as well and as fast, but it's a good starting point... the latest 62GS 38mm models are exactly what we want, just a smaller variant of the best.... some of the other 37mm models that you have here are not rocking the best specs or dials or designs... I feel all standard 40mm models should be now resized to 39mm or have an option to buy exact same watch in 38mm

  • @williamcoolidge9884
    @williamcoolidge9884 9 месяцев назад

    I loved the video. I also prefer smaller watches. I own the SBGX265, which is quartz with a blue dial. I love the look and it keeps time to within 1 second compared to atomic time when I need to reset the watch for Daylight Savings time change. So it's probably accurate to about +/- 2 seconds per year. Amazing. I probably would have gotten the snowflake dial version if it had been out at the time.

    Not sure if I missed it (and sorry if so) but can I give a shout out to the Omiwatari (especially the white dial one) - it’s a great combination of gorgeous simplicity in the dial/hands and Spring Drive which besides a technical marvel is just beautiful in the effect of the smooth seconds hand glide. IMO that’s a watch that punches well above its weight (and has a 37.3mm case)!

      Screw down crowns are not needed for manual wound dress watches. They're not gonna be exposed to so much water and pressure and having a screw down crown on manual wound movements is just gonna mess up the threading.
