      It's like a little spa that makes them literally wring themselves out like a soaked towel as a literal defense mechanism.
      Oh, and we do this FOUR TIMES, then they aren't worth doing it again and their lifespan has been cut so we end their miserable existence.
      AND THEN we proceed to package their corpses for devouring. Pretty ethical huh? much better than just killing them after only one milking, much more efficient this way.
      (Notice how none of that makes it better sounding.)

    • @natchosm4320
      @natchosm4320 Год назад +224

      Yeah, I think the point they were making is that they don't kill the snails in order to get the slime. This way, they get more slime per snail because they're alive making it rather than just getting the slime that they release when they die. I think it was more an efficiency point rather than a anti-animal cruelty point. But I agree, the way they say it is pretty misleading

    This sounds to me like they created a procedure that places the snails into an environment they where they'll feel dangerous enough to release their defenses mechanism. They continue to do this enough times to drain out all bodily fluids until they eventually are too weak to produce any more slime in which case they're killed. It's like a scientific way of sprinkling salt water onto the snail to get it to feel like it's getting water tortured.
    Look I get what they're to say but lets call it like it is. it's a better mouse trap. It's not good for the snails. You've only found a new way to get more slime out before you kill them. Don't make it out to sound like you're doing the snails a favor.

      It's funny how people draw a very vague line in the sand when something is considered animal cruelty. Yes I know it's a snail and by all scientific standing, I can more than guarantee that they have provided research saying snails don't have pain receptors and so on and so forth, but when you scale up the research- would it be ok if say a duck produced the same enzymes under similar circumstances? What about a horse? Chimpanzee? If the extract works, whatever fine, but it's torturing and stressing out the snails, don't paint it as anything but. I could imagine the very same researchers if you place them in the room and sprayed them constantly with a mildly caustic agent to produce I don't know, tears that cure baldness, and claimed it was ethical because the subjects were being fed and they had a room and things to occupy their mind: you're still causing a good amount of pain to create the solution. Would’ve been a lot better to *not* emphasize how the extraction process doesn’t harm the snails before explaining that they are euthanized anyways, especially considering there’s no proof it doesn’t harm them; nociception in mollusks is not well understood. Regardless of whether it “hurts” or not, the snails are releasing the slime as a defense mechanism, which makes it clear they are distressed by the process; stress can be quite damaging to many creatures. Just be honest and say that the snails are livestock and eventually get harvested once they stop producing enough slime. It’s not that hard.
    I’m not one of those people who will argue against the industry as a whole, as ultimately the snails are treated well for the vast majority of their lifespan and have a better life than their wild counterparts, but I am against the misleading reporting. It’s good that nothing goes to waste, but as someone who’s fairly interested in invertebrate welfare, I’m also basing my views of the process on the assumption that the method of euthanasia is quick and relatively painless. If anyone knows for sure if the process is humane or just an alternative to freezing- which is slow and painful(imagine having needles forming inside your flesh and stabbing you from the inside, that’s what it’s like due to ice crystals) and has been deemed unethical by some experts- I’d appreciate an explanation, since one isn’t given in the video.

      @@johansjournal Snails are part of the planet, my guy. They’re an essential part of the ecosystems they belong to and, like it or not, also provide income that some people rely on. The only thing really up for discussion here is animal welfare, and I believe living creatures should be treated with some level of respect regardless of how intelligent we perceive them to be. Besides, if people are allowed to care about animals that humans made(most dog and cat breeds, city pigeons, and feral animals come to mind, all of which came about as a direct result of human actions), why can’t others care about species that originated in nature? The planet is more than just temperatures.
      Trying to get on peoples’ cases for not discussing climate change and whatever other manmade bullshit is going on when they’re discussing something that conceptually applies to all animals on earth is kinda counterproductive. It doesn’t matter if the temperature of the ocean gets fixed tomorrow if people don’t care about the creatures living there, it doesn’t matter if every poacher gets caught and executed on live TV if people ignore every other problem being faced by what those poachers hunted. Ultimately, any time an animal is removed from its ecosystem, that ecosystem is weakened and thrown out of balance. Sometimes in more noticeable ways, sometimes in ways humans won’t notice until decades have passed. As such the goal is to encourage people to care for all creatures to some degree, even if they aren’t cute or cuddly or cool or fun to look at. Otherwise the planet will just suffer in different ways, or even in the same ways for different reasons.
      So, to be blunt, go whine on someone else’s comment, this is a pro-snail zone and there’s nothing you can do about it. Metaphorically you’re getting mad at folks for wasting time doing things other than making plans to deal with dry rot when the issue they’re focusing on currently is wildfire prevention. We can do both, it’s not a one or the other issue. Stop treating it like one.

Also, what happened to the snail AFTER? Did they become food? Guess my suspicions were right. I am glad this company allowed reporters in and consumers can learn more about what it is like.
