Before you condemn the fuel pump check the fuel pump relay, my fuel pump just "failed" by having no sound while cranking but spun fine being manually triggered at the pump, it was only a $5 relay that saved me from a potentially $500 fuel pump job that most likely wouldn't have helped me at all.

Where is the fuel pump relay? Because my car starts fine but one day it started while driving felt like fuel gets cut off for a millisecond n after reapplying foot pressure it picks back up

The reason the pumps sitting in a plastic housing is because there’s always fuel around the pump the gas tank is designed to centre the fuel around the pump. So when your tank gets low the fuel drops right to the pump. Some say don’t go below a quarter of a tank because the pump won’t be submerged anymore well yes the plastic housing won’t be under the gas anymore but the pump is still fine. Just never run the car completely empty cause then the pump will suck air and that will ruin it.

Hey man great video. I'm currently having a fuel pump related problem.I have 2010 VW cc 2.0 with 88 thousand miles. my car turns on just fine drives then dies when slowing down or at a stop. I'm just curious how I diagnose weather it's the high end or the low end pump.

Hey dude, I have a 2005 and 2007 Audi A6. I replaced the pump on the 2005, and a few weeks later, needed to replace the Fuel Pump Control Module. The recommended procedure is to undo a bunch of crap, (like exhaust?), and drop the tank a few inches. Took a few sources to find where to look exactly. I went a little bendy bendy on the floor instead, just enough to slide out module. I chiseled off the plastic bracket holding it. The replacement I retained with a screw and a nut. Bent things back and ensured a seal. "My God, Audi, why!?". Anyhoo, I'd love to see some content on modules, maybe testing. BTW, I did use my power probe to run the pump. Awesome little tool!.

Here is an issue I have been having occasionally with my 2012 Jetta 2.5L, 160k miles. A few times a week, [I noticed it more when it was colder and had the original battery] it would turn over 6, 7 or 8 times before the engine would fire. It was vigorous and didnt sound like a weak battery. After replacing the battery in May, this might happen once or twice a week. It also has been much warmer in PA in May and June. Winter really held on until April. I had this cranking issue in the winter of 16-17 and thought I would've needed a new battery a year ago but the issue seemed to have subsided and of course I put it off. What are your thoughts? Sensors? Starter? Bad ground? Loose wires? Your help is very much appreciated and your videos are priceless!! Thank you for helping educate me on VWs & all of your endeavors.

For Jetta MK6 (TDI 1.6), What should be the current (amps) of the tank pump when working ? i see in the manual should be between 4-8 Amps, but my pump amps is only 2.5Amps

Thanks so much for this video. So informative. I had a strange occurrence recently with my '99 Golf. On the way to an errand, some random, intermittent cutting out of power. When I returned 15 minutes later the car would crank but not turn over. About 2 sec into the cranking I'd hear a subtle thump from the general location of the fuel pump. I left it alone for about 10 minutes, tried again and it started right up. No cutting out signs on the drive home. I replaced the fuel pump relay. Only very small signs of those symptoms since. Do you think that thump I mentioned is a sure sign of a failing fuel pump?

Hey Charles! Love all the content mate and I have a question may I ask? I've a 97 VR6 Golf and I bought complete bosh pump unit with the lines and I'm struggling to remove the old lines from the sender unit. Any advice on how to get them off please? Twist n pull only twists the lines and too tight of space for pliers. I don't want to be too rough incase I break the float mechanism that's attached. Nuff DUB love from the UK 👊🙌💜 Thank you
Edit: Solved it with boiling water in 5 minutes after writing this 🙈😂😂

I’m getting positive fuel trims while accelerating and then returning slightly positive at idle. Also some hesitation and inconsistent throttle. NO CEL
Fuel rail pressure is staying high so I think HPFP is fine! Car starts normal...
Could the LPFP be the culprit? Custom tuned stage 2 GTI, 145k miles!

Wanted to know. On a 2014 VW Polo Comfortline (Indian Version), one of the symptoms I'm facing is a high pitched noise as soon as the engine starts. Also there is a bit of juddering/ jerking while accelerating. Could this also be a symptom of a bad fuel pump?
    Thanks.

Hi there HumbleMechanic I own a 2013 VW jetta 1.4 tsi CAVD engine, the car had been acting strange for the past 6 months or so cold starts will cause it to vibrate badly but when the rpm stabilizes at 730-ish the vibration goes away and car runs smoothly doing a scan using OBD11 picks up misfires on Cyc 1&4 but not enough to throw a check engine light so I replaced the spark plugs by myself during movement control order after which the car ran smoothly though OBD11 were still picking up misfires.
Managed to get it to the garage after 4 months back they found 2 coil connectors were broken that was replaced they also performed scans which didnt pickup any misfires they also ran a compression test twice and results were perfect. At this point I thought the problem was fixed but after 2 weeks found that my fuel consumption had deteriorated a little so I ran OBD11 again only to find out there were misfires but no fault codes or CEL baffled by this I got it back to the garage this time injector test were done along decarbonizing (walnut Blasting) too and still there were misfires at this point I thought it could be my cheap OBD11 I wasn't accurate and so left it.
Just a week ago while I was driving home car started shuddering like it was going to stall car went into limp mode so I drove it slowly back home check engine light flashed about 3 times then went off but the EPC light stayed on used the OBD11 and faults registered were P0300. P0301 and P0304. Engine misfiring on cyc 1 & 4. Tow it back to the garage and they recommend changing coil packs which solve that problem. However the cold start vibrations still occur and when the car idles you can feel an intermittent vibration from under the seat.
This time after 3 days of testing in the garage they recommend changing the engine at 6k without a concrete reason. I brought the car home still runs smoothly except when it idles and cold starts vibration. I had done some searching up on google and youtube found a VW golf mk7 having identical issues which turned out to be high pressure fuel pump for the owner could the same apply to mine? would really appreciate any advise thanks

I bought a 2003 VW Eurovan, drove it to the beach the first time. On the way over it was fine, on the way back though, I had the van die on me on the highway. After letting is sit for a bit, was able to drive it off the freeway then dies again. I was able to do this multiple times to get closer to home, but the van eventually would "live" shorter and shorter between these cycles to eventually having to park it to tow back home.

2016 Jetta Hybrid SEL less than 100k had a fuel pump failure. I was able to order a replacement and changed it out in about 2 hours, very easy. The hardest part was the top outlet fuel fitting that didn't have a button to press like the other fitting, it was much smaller clip that I had to push and it finally came off. There was another fuel fitting in the tank that attached at the bottom of the fuel pump housing, I guess there's another pickup point in the tank? Also the EPC and CEL lights were on, the codes were - P064A, P0087 (fuel pressure system too low), P2414 (o2 sensor sample error bank 1 sensor 1), P2279 (intake air system leak). Once all codes cleared the lights went away and the Hybrid drive started working. I also changed out the air filter and the cabin filter. That leak in the air system is another hose that I couln't get (it's back ordered).

I’m having an issue with my 2008 gti for the past 2 days when i put the ignition to the on position the sound of the fuel pump is different than usual and today i started having a weird hasitation between 5500-6000 rpm when i’m going full throttle, but before and after that spot the car runs and pulls normally, could it be the fuel pump?

I asked a shop to test fuel pressure, he it said its within specs. Same day I went to get gas and right after I got gas, same thing started to happen. Vehicle start to vibrate, gas paddle lose power, and turns off the engine. Do you think its the fuel pumps?

Question, I have MK6 TDI fixed gold 2.0. Sometimes when I am maintanin speed ~40 or so, third gear I get like a miss fire jerking action. I have a manual transmission. Is believe there is a lift pump to the HPFP and the fuel filter has been recently changed. I also think I hear the lift pump after shutdown. Its a motor on for two seconds of for two seconds on for one. Love your channel. Thanks in advance for your help. In addition most of the time the first start of the day takes 4 seconds, 3 times longer then starts the rest of the day.

The reason why I think there is a problem, I’ll be sitting at idle, and every couple of seconds the engine will hiccup and act like a stutter and at low end if I press pedal, engine light comes on and it’s a little boggy, but if I slam on the gas pedal it will down shift normally and shift properly, it’s just under small load that it hiccups. Any idea? Help would be so so so so so appreciated.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I'm new to the volkswagen family and I am pretty an amateur when it comes to car issues. I bought a vw passat b5 1998 model 1.8l petrol at a government auction. It's driving perfectly well but with notable problems. The fuel gauge is not working, gladly the fuses are OK and the pump is still working but no longer in its perfect state because it drags to start especially early morning hours. Maybe it's another problem not related to the pump. Secondly, the central control unit burnt-out because of water. I've ordered a replacement. What should I do with the gauge. Secondly, what do I need to do when replacing the central body module.

If the pump makes a "crrrrr..." noise when it's low on fuel and it takes about 2 or 3 switches of the car key on and off to disappear, is it time to get a new one ? When the tank is full or half-full, I can't hear it, I guess it's already primed, being sunk in fuel.

I have a 2006 2.5l Jetta with 155k miles on it.. And I notice at times when the tank is a 1/4 to 1/2 full I can hear a beeping noise(like the timer on a bomb)coming from the trunk on the right side. As well as a knocking sound as if someone is locked in the trunk and trying to escape from the right side. Both sounds do stop after a few minutes, but it seems to happen if I haven't driven it in a few days. Another thing that happens is, when I fill the tank up it won't start right away, it will kill. I would have to pump the gas pedal while not on a few times then crank it. But in order for it to stay on I have to idle it for a couple of seconds, after that it runs fine. I also replaced the MAF sensor, air filter, and valve cover because I got a code P2279 and it was stalling & jerking. So I don't know if it's the fuel filter or fuel pump that's causing this issue.

I had to change the FP on wife's Accord. Simmilar design. meant to be changed as a whole unit. bought an aftermarket performance pump for the car, Diameter was the same, but was longer 2 centimeters. Being carefull, the upper part came off from the bucket. Had to modify the pump bottom seating, with a hack saw and knife, to fit the filter.
i do not know the VW but on the accord, the return line come to the bottom of that bucket and raises the fuel level arround the pump to cool it. So when the pump gets fuel, then it will be cooled too.
I think that the pump/sender unit is changed as an unit in all car makers, The pump changing is for the DIY and independent shops.

Good video. Maybe you can do a video on AdBlue tank heater units found in the new TDI's. They fail so often these days that I'm waiting for the letter want day now about a recall. When there is a MIL/CEL on a B7 TDI Passat it's about a 85% chance it has to do with the freakin AdBlue system. My '13 just threw a MIL P205B last night at 36,600 miles.

I have a 2015 Golf Mk7 1.4 tsi and its cranking 5-6s, sometimes more, when the fuel level is 1/2 tank or less. Sometimes it turns on, idles on very low rpm, an then starts to turn once again. When its really low on fuel it idles porly and the engine doesnt run smooth under acceleration. I can hear the fuel pump when i turn the ignition, could it still be a bad fuel pump?
No problems when the tank is filled up.

The acceleration wasn’t poor, it was inconsistent with occasional ”Coughs”. Could be the turbo/engine mapping, i think it’s something most Golf buyers won’t notice. Not the first turbocharged car i experience this in.
But in comparison my BMW with the B48 engine is super smooth and has a very consistent response to the throttle input.

I have an issue with my 2012 touareg tdi V6 the low fuel pressure alarm comes up under heavy acceleration (goes into limp mode) otherwise the car drives fine. upon further investigation the fuel pressure in the rail doesn't quiet meet the specified value under heavy acceleration.
I have changed the fuel filter and checked the low pressure fuel pump flow rate and this is fine. (1.8 liters in 20 seconds)
I have removed the low pressure fuel pump the strainer is clean and the pipework is in good condition with no leaks.
I have removed the inlet manifold and removed the metering valve on the pump with no metal particles found so replaced the metering valve.
Inspected the fuel pressure regulator on the rail this seems to work and shut off when 12v is applied to it. (after removing i found they have a one use seal so replaced it anyway).
Now the car will not start at all the fuel system has been primed with the electric pump, there are no fault codes but when you look at the fuel pressures when cranking the pressure is only low and doesn't get to the specified 500 bar to start.
    Any ideas?

Hi There, I have a VW Passat CC 2011. I occasionally have misfires while driving for approximately 2 hours or more. This mainly happens when I am idling. Eventually the car cuts off/stalls and doest not restart right away. I changed the high pressure fuel pump, cleaned the manifold from the carbon buildup , O2 Sensors and PCV Valve. I have no check engine light on the dash. What do you think can be the issue here?

    • @johnwales8735
      @johnwales8735 2 года назад

Hi there, did you find out what the issue was? I've done exactly the same as you have. Changed PCV valve, O2 sensor, fuel pump sensor, HPFP, carbon cleaning. Only thing I haven't changed is the LPFP. I would have misfires, and sometimes the engine light went on for misfires. Changed injectors and coils but still get misfire issues sometimes... car would also randomly shut off on me, never while driving, but while idling or after long periods of driving. Car would shake violently and then would just shut off sometimes. After waiting 20 minutes, the car would start like nothing ever happened.

  • @RoadrunGTI
    @RoadrunGTI 8 лет назад +1

Hey Charles, can you recommend any specific troubleshooting ideas for a possible faulty LPFP on my mk6 GTI? I'm experiencing long cold start crank times which is becoming more frequent. It seems to only do this when the car has been sitting for several hours, warm restarts don't seem to be an issue. I'm not hearing the fuel pump prime when I open the door, but beyond that I'm not sure what else I could check. Would pulling fuel pressures in VCDS give any indication? What about key on, wait to prime, and then crank? Thanks!

Replaced with new fuel about 1/2 a tank but it will not start, I've been advised to replace the pump (it only clicks in on ignition on but does not charge up like my R 32 does) the pressure regulator was missing the rubber T to the vacuum hose which I have replaced. Ordered a new pump which was wrong and it turns out that this is the 1JO 919 051 G version which I"m struggling to source is there an alternative pump option ?

my 06 gli has been taking a few seconds to crank and then start on the first start of the day only. Also, after driving it for two months I'm noticing that it's REALLLY luggy trying to launch in first gear. I've stalled it a dozen times, and thought it was from not having a manual for several years. Then I started trying different pedal-work to launch, bringing the revs up before letting out clutch. nothing. Even if i goose it up to 4000rpm it drops to ~1500 when I let the clutch out. It's really dangerous when I'm trying to make a left turn or coming out of a hill stop, or both. Is this the fuel pump or are the 2.0 turbos just geared this way? All the other gears give me lots of power whenever I need it as long as I'm at 2kRPM or more.
