Barbara actually made her cry. this girl didn't have everything handed to her; she has a supportive family. there's a big difference. i'm sure she'll be successful
I loved how Daymond and Mark came to her defense. It is completely unfair to have your destiny written out for you on the basis of something that is just untrue.
You know how profiling works? It is basically what is most probable and that is built on data created in past. Barbara told the truth but what she said is not in 100% of cases...but it is in significant majority.

But it doesn't mean someone only will get successful if they're poor Or that 80% of the top 10 richest men alive should not be appraised by what they've achieved
Yeah can't imagine any of them letting their children go homeless nor letting their passions or businesses fail. If any of their children had a businesse idea they'd also have advisors, accounts, investors and who knows what else pop up giving advice just from having the family they have even if they didn't ask. This girl went on indigogo to start her business and put in work to get it where it was at that point so even if her dad helped with her rent she made her businesse.
This is the comment i was searching for! Having a father that supports your dreams isn't something that's going to hold you back, that showed that she had a strong foundation and support channel at home, which shows character and integrity of a man who raised this lady. Not all underdogs make it to the big leagues and not every big leaguer was an underdog.... Mark Zuckerberg, Bill gates, Tesla and Jeff B where never underprivileged who made it on top, they had a basic foundation of a good household and most of them went to private schools.
This demonstrates why Mark Cuban is not just a great businessman but a great human. I love how he countered Barbara's argument by saying: 'if that's true then none of our own children can make it and I refuse to believe that'. I really felt for this young girl trying to do her best and it was very hard to watch her cry. Well played Mark.
I've never had strong dislike for a Shark before, but Barbara had absolutely no excuse to tear into this girl for having a supportive family to keep her afloat while she starts a business. We should all strive to be like Melissa when we're young and like Melissa's father when we're old. Not every successful entrepreneur needs to have homelessness threatened to earn that success. For shame, Barbara. Kudos to Mark for his words and his offer, and I'm glad to see this company is doing incredibly well.
Barbara is extremely biased when it comes to this. This is probably because her personal trauma being neglected by her parents, since she had 9 other siblings, and ran away at age of 16. Worked in real estate with no money and backs against the wall. So now it seems that she resent those with a supportive family.
I mean, I'd love to have a supportive wealthy father so that I can chase whatever goals I want like Melissa while I'm young buuuuuuuuuuut I didn't win that lottery - so not sure what you mean by strive to be like her not being shady just saying "strive" to have a different set of parents is baffling
i feel so bad for this girl. barbara is just entitled to her opinion and that’s it, so are we and it sounds like the majority of people watching think it was unfair of barbara. sometimes even considering all factors on both parties.. women will still not support other women/make reasons not to. barbara can’t compare herself to this young girl to the tee… that’s not fair, they’re different people going thru different processes with different products
@@Love-sg5pp yeah but mark likes to interrupt and isn’t very respectful while Robert is more of a gentlemen so I’d say he takes the award of nicest shark.
Why is Barbara judging her just because her Dad helps her out? He’s being a supporting parent and that should be applauded. Edit: Thanks for all the likes y’all!
I actually agree with her. People who have everything to lose tend to put in more than those who have little/nothing to lose. I’m not saying that’s the case 100% of the time but since she has a backup if things don’t work out it’s less likely that she’ll push herself as hard when things go south, whereas people who don’t have a backup will put everything they have
@@TheSkidds I've read her book. She was a waitress who met one of her customers and married him. They went into business together, after years together he left her for their secretary. @@shaemckenna568 At the same time, when you have everything to lose, a small hiccup can do just that - entirely sink the business. Having a support system behind you allows you to keep going and make changes if something doesn't go as planned. Of course, you can't rely on that forever, especially if it becomes obvious the business just won't work, but it definitely helps. It often takes YEARS to grow a business to the point where its just barely profitable, and having income or support coming in from elsewhere while you traverse through those difficult first few years it extremely important.

The estimated value of the pitch was $500,000, which was later justified by Mark Cuban to $303,030.3. The anticipated net worth of Wanna Date is $4 million. They have so far made sales of $4.7 million in 2022
Her dad is literally just doing what most parents are supposed to do and him making sure she is not homeless and starving is really great, because he knows she is trying to make a name for herself at such a young age
That was a crummy thing for Barbara to say. Anyone who says they are "self-made" is usually someone who forgets to acknowledge that someone else either took a chance on them or invested time, money, or love in their future.
I know it was such a disgusting comment ! Very very unfair.. how dare she! Barbara's circumstances to her success have no nexus to this girl NONE it's so infuriating
Also Barbara has her own kids and I'm absolutely positive that they've grown up with a silver spoon. Pretty sure when they turned 18, she didn't just straight up cut them off.
This is crazy. I don’t even like dates but listening to her pitch I would absolutely buy multiple flavors. Who cares if her dad supports her? She’s clearly passionate about this and as a sales woman SHE WAS EXCELLENT! She was clever and funny and very likable. I would absolutely support her brand.
Most people wouldn't be able to launch their own niche food business full time because they have work 40 hours a week to pay their rent. They would only be able to do it after work/on weekends after being tired from working all day. The fact that she doesnt have to do that is a HUGE luxury. That's why it's so much easier for rich kids to start their own businesses
@@MP-ef9yo Well a lot of people are homeless and cant find work. It's a HUGE luxury to have a job and rent to pay. Some people dont have rent to pay because they live on the streets, they cant even get a job because showing up to a job interview smelling an looking homeless is not a good look. They dont even have the luxury to work on their business projects because they can afford the resources and have no work space to start inventions, if they choose to. It's much easier for working class people to start up a business. But I dont see Barbara investing in them. Get real, everyone has advantages & disadvantages in life. It was a shitty reason to deny her. If she was that rich she wouldn't need to be on this show asking for investments.
Barbara is an amazing shark, but how she romanticised poverty here as the great motivator is so intrinsically untrue and borderline insane/cruel. The real repercussions of not being able to pay your rent or afford food is horrific, and there’s no motivation in it. Wtf.
Well said. I found her reasoning to be incredibly harmful and strangely sadistic. Penalizing someone because they are able to chase their dream with support and security from their family is very toxic logic.
Right?! I get her point about hard work being motivated by the idea of homelessness and poverty but on the flip side I could see a person making shady business moves and cutting corners in a desperate effort to succeed that could ultimately lead to failure.
Agreed. Barbara Corcoran (and Kevin O Leary as well) provide a breath of fresh air with their no-sugar-coating personalities. But sometimes I feel like they just intentionally say controversial stuff just to spark a reaction and help their ego, rather than provide useful advice. This video was one of those times.
There is no motivation in it, it's more like fear that forces you to work harder because you literally have no other choice. Either you expend all your energy for the next month and work your ass off, or you freeze on the street.
I'm glad the other Sharks stood up for her. It's about progression. Each generation worked hard for the next. Eventually, you get to the point where people can pursue a dream or an adventure. Her father being in a position to help her shouldn't be frowned upon, it should be applauded. "People opened doors for me and I opened doors for you. It doesn't make you any less of a man to walk through them." - Uncle Phil

Yeah, just because she lives with her parents, doesn’t mean they are rich. It just shows that she has family who is supportive and gives her a roof. Steve jobs lived with his parents till apple took off
She's adorable and her branding is attractive. I could see Whole Foods wanting her product. Barbara is so wrong. Having some support from parents is not something a young woman entrepreneur would find as a disadvantage.
@K B lol thats not at all what the implication was. It WAS a BS way for Barbera to throw in the towel, but there is some level of validity. Keyword some. But yes when people haave REAL consequences tied to the pending success/failure of their business, it creates a diff. kind of drive. If you know in the back of your mind that you'll still be A-OK should it fail, you MIGHT not have that same drive/motivation for success. If you know (or even just the hypothetical fear of) that an unsuccessful business venture COULD/WOULD leave you in a bad financial situation, homeless, hungry, etc.... Its just a different mindset.
To know that you've put all your blood, sweat, and tears into a passion, and then have someone you probably looked up to, who you need something from, strip it all away without even knowing the details of your life... this would have me in tears too. My immigrant dad paid for my undergraduate degree by picking up a part-time taxi job on top of his full-time teacher job, just so I could start my life debt free... I must be a rich kid too. Barbara basically said: screw this girl for having a dad who loves and supports her dreams.
Barbara has NEVER really expereinced the stress of almost losing her home or being completely homeless. She talks like she knows and for that reason I want her out.
Its her opinion and she is entitled to it. I kinda of get it but for an investment I don't see why that would matter unless they are deliberately acting spoiled or not caring.

Barbara’s statement is dangerous. This is why high school students lie on their college essays about hardships they never had. Yea video title is BS. No one accused her of having everything handed to her (although that's how she took the remarks it seems), she was accused of not having a big enough drive to succeed due to having a safety net. Which is still a BS assumption; sure having no safety net can be a motivating factor to try as hard as you can, but in no way does that mean you can't try as hard as you can if you do have a safety net. Seems to be a "denying the antecedent" fallacy.
That girl seems very genuine and passionate, and she seems really crushed after hearing her dad is in her way. Which by the way doesn't mean much because he is maybe struggling too to make ends meet.

This girl is so sweet, I don't believe that everyone has to have their life endangered to succeed, stress and burdens of life can kill you the same and leave you crippled with lack of hope, depression and ton of bad habits
In fact, that's one of the evolutionary reasons we seek out comfort. The human brain can think of previously unexplored things, find more creative solutions to problems, if it's just well rested and not stressed. There's a reason most new inventions and discoveries are made by scientists who are working in comfortable lab environments with really good job security and fairly decent lifestyles. If they were stressed out about other life commitments, they wouldn't focus a lot on the important, potentially pathbreaking work that they do. Sure, brilliant ideas can come out of adversity but it can also come out of comfort. To dismiss a mind just because it's comfortable is really stupid and mean.
What are they talking about lolol.... So many successful ppl out there did not have to risk their rent to succeed. Look at top fortune list how many actually started with nothing. Her comment was absurd. Having a safety net means you can take risks and be bold and make great things happen where others can't afford to.
Barbra is insufferable, looking for excuse after excuse to say “I’m out” and now she goes personal. Even that's pretty generous. She never said she was above middle class, and we have no idea how much her dad financially supports her. It's more like "you live with supportive and loving parents, and for that reason, I'm out".
Barbara's comment has the undertone of you're not desperate or vulnerable enough for me to invest because then I can't control you and the business as I want.
What Barbara said absolutely enrages me. But Melissa's response made me want to invest in her myself and I (oddly) clapped for her after her response. This girl has a spunk and determination that anyone should want to partner with. I'm also glad that Daymond mentioned what his mother did for him, too. Barbara, I've lost respect for you.
She was asked how did she survive in New york with such low profits and she said her dad provides for her which means like any normal family her family supports her while she focuses on her carrer. She was not broke that's what she said.
Barbara must be a little nuts. She's basically saying that all of the Shark's children will fail if they start a business just because they have support from their parents.
@Digby Dooright Honestly I think it's very reckless advice. There are scam gurus out there making you think if you go all in, like quitting your job and buying all their courses you'll be successful. Just because you have a lot at risk doesn't mean you're guaranteed success.
I don’t think she was saying the girl would fail. I think she’s saying that she doesn’t trust that she would put her all into it because it wasn’t a do or die situation. If she could just give up and move on too easily she didn’t want to invest her money into the venture.
No no. They just need to move out. Give up their bank accounts and start out on the street. Then they can get success. It's actually pretty easy when your life depends on it.
Not sure if Barbara notice, but Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and many other successful billionaires are coming from middle-high class family.

Barbara should go recruit her entrepreneurs at homeless shelters, those people have way less security in their life.
Barbara has one way of thinking and because she’s old she pretty much just imposes it onto everyone. If your motivation is survival anyways, wouldn’t your motivation go away once you achieve your level of financial security? You have plenty of time to develop your business, where in Shark Tank, all Sharks wants a product that will get successful quickly. And that's something someone with a lot of family support might not achieve. Casue there is no feeling of urgency. Compared to that - yes, someone that has no support, might end up homeless soon has way more pressure and motivation to succeed asap.
Barbara often makes ridiculous excuses. Remember the episode of the portable and affordable oxygen? She said it’s gonna be helpful for her sick husband and for that reason she’s out.😅
Her Dad was a super abusive alcoholic likely triggered her seeing a young ambitious girl not have to struggle, because of her Dad. Barbara had to do 20+ jobs by 23 just to get by.
It's outrageous and absurd how they tried to degrade her about family support rather than focusing on the products & sales. Why would any entrepreneur would want to go on the show if the sharks behave like this. The producers really need to watch the tone these sharks are putting out, especially when these sharks are trying to lead by example.
@@vozamaraktv-art5595 i mean its also not fair to hold it against rich kids either. True they may get the money easier and have more but does that mean their families shouldn't be supportive of them? @@davidl570 Yeah, I agree. Seems like maybe she didn't have a supportive parent in her life, so she's bitter about it and about anyone else who does have family support. Shoot wish my mother did she didn't help with NOTHING! kicked me out raising a kid that wasn't mine(sisters) working and trying 2 so school and play sports
The dad supported her through one of the most expensive universities. More to Barbara's comment than meets the ear. I agree though it's an extreme comment in general.
It’s really quite surprising that this product is considered a new idea in America. Here in the Middle East (where dates originally came from) we puts dates on literally everything, date cake, date milk, date paste, date syrup, are all common items found in all convenient stores. Most of our popular dishes contain dates in them.
Shame on Barbara. This girl is running an entire business herself, the only thing her dad has done is pay for a place to live. And that's temporary. Having the support of your family is never going to be an issue. But Barbara just wants to make it seem like she's come from the roughest times when she hasn't. If anything she's the one who's had shit handed to her.
Barbara lost everything and was essentially homeless after a divorce. How do you know her Dad is only paying for living arrangements and how do you know for sure it's only temporary?
So glad Cuban stepped up. This girl is driven and passionate. And that counts for a lot more than the fact that maybe she doesnt have the best product on Shark Tank. Her belief in its success will make it just that

I've never had strong dislike for a Shark before, but Barbara had absolutely no excuse to tear into this girl for having a supportive family to keep her afloat while she starts a business. I actually agree with her. People who have everything to lose tend to put in more than those who have little/nothing to lose. I’m not saying that’s the case 100% of the time but since she has a backup if things don’t work out it’s less likely that she’ll push herself as hard when things go south, whereas people who don’t have a backup will put everything they have
Well, Barbara had to sink or swim in her business and that is understandable. But lots of people get parental support which certainly helps.
@@TheSkidds I've read her book. She was a waitress who met one of her customers and married him. They went into business together, after years together he left her for their secretary.

I normally hate when the entrepreneurs tear up and cry but I 100% understood why this girl did. Barbara was so out of line
I'm glad the other Sharks stood up for her. It's about progression. Each generation worked hard for the next. Eventually, you get to the point where people can pursue a dream or an adventure. Her father being in a position to help her shouldn't be frowned upon, it should be applauded.

Barbara possesses a lot of traits that are associated with a bad person. And this is just one of them.
For real! Just another case of women putting down other women when we really should be trying to help one another. Barbara’s behavior was so uncalled for and unnecessarily rude.
If Barbara wants to work with people who know their money, who did everything they could to create their business, thats on her. This girl is so sweet, I don't believe that everyone has to have their life endangered to succeed, stress and burdens of life can kill you the same and leave you crippled with lack of hope, depression and ton of bad habits
True

She came up with an idea on her own and she is doing all the work, her father should be proud! I'm glad she got a deal!
literally put water in her fire with her barbed words, that barbara

She is super arrogant and bitter.
You are absolutely right she is very sweet and I am so happy for her! 😍😍🙂👍

“ I won’t fail because I won’t quit “ she definitely meant that and she did just that !!
