I've only seen some live footage on TV. Otis was truely blessed with an incredible voice and feeling. Loved his music from a young age. My older sister has some of his records. I adore Sam Cooke too!
This song always makes me think of the movie Pretty in Pink. I love that scene when Duckie is trying to tell Andie how he feels with this song. GREAT TUNE. "This is Otis. I love Otis"
If your doing old Black artist you Really Really need to do Percy I'm talking about the Man Percy Sledge curl your toes good the brother could sing a Bird out of tree.
Jayzzz n what’s his name?! Bah!! Midgets claiming to b tall when standing on the shoulders of giants! Look into the LIVE clips of Otis! Especially the Monterey Pop Festival!
Your reactions are fabulous. Redding one of the best soul singers I've ever heard. My favorite songs of his were Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay and especially These Arms of Mine, A Change is Gonna Come and I've Been Loving You Too Long. Listen to these last three and you'll be totally hooked. He wrote These Arms of Mine #2 on the music charts.
My favorite Redding song...never saw this video til a few years ago, but, hey, who needs video when u got ears! I was bout 15-16 then, 70 now, but, his music still rocks my world! Thanks for keeping yourself open to "new" music...
That's a great rendition, though I wish the video had more footage from his performance and less of the festival scenes. Here's another great (and even longer) performance: ruclips.net/video/IQ9n2_5mbig/видео.html
The best version of this is Live at Monterey, his finest hour! You have to react to These arms of mine and Cigarettes and coffee also, shows how great Otis’s range was. What couldn’t he have done if he hadn’t left us so soon?!
He died in that plane crash just a few months after the Monterey concert. When he finishes this song, he says; "I've got to go but I don't wanna go now". Hurts to hear that knowing what came next.
I see Ducky from Pretty in Pink....singing and dancing to Otis! This is soo awesome! I have bought it by so many artists, Otis and a woman named Katie Webster! Discovered her on Beale St. in Memphis, she had just passed, but she's killer.
How can this not be the greatest soul voice in history? Just amazing and natural! I love Otis to bits and still can't get over that tone and how naturally he sounded so unique!
I've heard recording of this live in concert and in those...the end of the one you did would just be start of the best partof the live performance. There must be some full live performances on youtube somewhere
Oh my God! Otis Redding was just a powerhouse performer and pure magic when you saw him perform live. So wish you weren't just reacting to an album cover and the audio. You had to SEE him sing the song to appreciate everything he put into it. God bless his soul. He was just becoming famous when his life was cut short.
Another song you may find of interest is ‘To Love Somebody’ by The Bee Gees. They wrote it for Otis Redding but he passed away before he could record it. It would have been cool to have heard what he would have done with it. Of course The Bee Gees are spectacular in their own take on it but hearing Otis do it would have been special. My suggestion would be to listen to their original studio version but there are many live versions by them online that are great too. Cheers!
Great performer, song and reaction. May I suggest something a little different. There is a cover of one of Otis' songs called the "FaFaFa Song (Sad Song)" by a West African artist called Papa Wemba that is fantastic. Papa Wemba loves Otis and has a video where Papa Wemba and a fantastic female singer perform for a really hip African audience in a West African club. Papa Wemba has even created a shrine with Otis' picture and memorabilia to show his admiration. I lived and worked in London, England for 5 years and was introduced to a plethora of artists. I love music and appreciate all musicians and songs that are above the ordinary. Thanks for giving your time and sharing your feelings about music. I like your openness to responding to all a variety of music that has likely been out of your sphere of reference until now. Also, thanks for bringing some reprieve from the current bad times that are happening everywhere in the world. We need some people that are willing to bring inspiration during a difficult time. Stay save and cheers from a Canadian fan.
I feel lucky to have found your channel during this pandemic lockdown. You are adorable! Your reactions are very entertaining!! Tried to find whether or not you ever listened to "Always & Forever" by Heatwave... There is a live version on a channel called CousinSinister, that is 6 min. 26 sec. and I think you will be impressed with the way his voice goes from low to high at 4 min., and the way he held the last note at the end. THANKS for what you do!
A guy on radio was reminiscing on fifty years of going to live music. He was asked to nominate his favourite. He said it was Otis on his Stax Revue Tour of UK 1966.
Otis Redding is who the first half of my screen name refers to. Love him! I recommend that you next listen to "I've Been Loving You Too Long". The studio version is great, but his performance of it at Monterey is a great live performance, very much worth seeing. Otis also wrote and did the original versions of "Respect" and "Hard to Handle", songs that are better known in versions by Aretha Franklin and The Black Crowes. Other songs by Otis worth checking out (to put it mildly): "That's How Strong My Love Is", "Ole Man Trouble", "Cigarettes and Coffee", and "Good to Me". He also does a great version of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come".
Otis was a wonderful singer, he is one of the best!!! Your face is so expressive and wonderful to watch sweetheart, I love how you show us just how you are feeling what you are listening to makes you feel. You bring to mind our long ago memories and that is a great gift that you give to me personally and I thank you so much. Take care and stay safe please my friends Mary-Ellen UK
Love this song!!! First time I heard it was in the movie Pretty in Pink....when Duckie, literally comes sliding into the record store!!!!! BRILLIANT! Jay, you should check out Fine Young Cannibals. I think you'd like them, very unique sound! 👍👍👍 She Drives Me Crazy , I believe was their first big hit.
You are so right Javon -- Otis was *most definitely* just getting warmed up at the end of this version. Check out his live performance from the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967--this tune and "I've Been Loving You Too Long"--for the full experience. You won't regret it man!
You have to hear Otis live! After hearing him do this live, you must hear him do "Satisfaction" - you won't believe his energy. Then finish it off with him and Carla Thomas' duet on "Tramp." ruclips.net/video/NPgRxrMF93A/видео.html
One of the greatest tunes of my youth. By a phenomenal talent. Today's artists sample this and so many more tremendous tunes from the past because they will never get to that league on their own. JayVee, that was a severely shortened version. Get the full length version preferable live so your journey doesn't get short changed.
I had no idea that this was not Otis's original song. Thanks! BTW, Jon Cryer does an interesting dance to Otis's version in the 80's classic film "Pretty in Pink"--not that anyone needs an excuse to listen to this amazing song again!
Otis Redding! Love this! Also, “These Arms of Mine”. There’s a great rendition on ‘The Commitments’ movie (obviously not as good as Otis, bit still amazing!).
“Wearing that same old shaggy dress, yeah, yeah.” Three Dog Night did a blue-eyed soul cover to this. You really should give it a go too since you’ haven’t reacted to them yet.
My man from South Louisiana Percy Sledge - good to the bone! Being from Lake Charles, Percy was actually a family friend. Such a great man. Dark-end of the Street Cover Me
There are a few live versions of this from his European tour and I think he might have done this at Monterey as well. The live versions kick a**. They are extended as well. Product of Memphis and Stax, Booker T. & the MGs, and aranged by Issac Hayes.
My dude, I’m hoping that you haven’t listened to this, so it can be my present to you...Chaka Kahn...Ain’t Nobody & Tell me something good! One of the greatest vocalist ever, imho!💜🌹💜
Songs were all 3 minutes or so for the radio...A.M. radio with a DJ talking and doing commercials inbetween. Howlin Wolf was a DJ, not sure when, it seemed like he lived forever. Those songs were so short. I've watched a live video of this song. Great to see you feeling his soul, he was pure soul. So incredible. Al Green comes close, Teddy Pendergrass too.
Ha! What do you know, I've been listening to this song for going on four decades now and only today did I learn that a different version of it was used during the opening credits to the Kubrick film "Dr. Strangelove" -- no doubt to emphasize the tenderness necessary when handling nuclear weapons! And speaking of atomic blasts, Otis Redding blows this song up! I think the fade out right as he gets going is meant to entice the listener to play the record again! Fortunately, the song holds up well to repeated listenings. Be sure to check out Otis Redding's performance at Monterrey Pop. I would have loved to hear him sing a duet with Janis Joplin.
Otis! No one like him ever again! That voice! Sigh...
Darryl Darichuk I know! I had tickets to see him and Carla Thomas at the Village Gate but then he was killed in a plane crash.
I saw Otis Redding about a week before he died. He was absolutely incredible. He actually sang his hits better in person. Just loved him.
I've only seen some live footage on TV. Otis was truely blessed with an incredible voice and feeling. Loved his music from a young age. My older sister has some of his records. I adore Sam Cooke too!
He will never be forgotten! The Ambassador Of Soul Music!
Oh my god, such a blessing to have seen him. ❤️
I saw him about the same time. He is a soul icon.
Omg! You’ve got to listen to more Otis! So talented. “
If you love Otis, you would really enjoy Al Green. His seventies version of "Let's Stay Together" is a classic!
I second this.
Im a fan of Otis. But Al green doesn't got what he has
I've been loving you to long. Play!
Al Green it's great, but is not Otis Redding. they are too different.
Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" is not a version, it's the original.
This is one of my fav but nothing is better than....These Arms of Mine!
Yep these arms of mine is my fave by him
Yes it is one of my favorites
In my top three for sure!
Texas Magnolia absolutely! Cigarettes and coffee run it a close second though!😎
My wedding song!!!!!!! Amazing!
This song always makes me think of the movie Pretty in Pink. I love that scene when Duckie is trying to tell Andie how he feels with this song. GREAT TUNE. "This is Otis. I love Otis"
This should lead you into Sam Cooke - "You Send Me," and many more.
I love Sam Cooke! A Change is Gonna Come!
I would go Sam and Dave "Hold On I'm Coming" first and then Sam Cooke but it would be "Bring It On Home To Me".
David Mercury the whole Sam Cooke catalog is awesome
I agree with the Sam Cooke vote, but I would use "a change gonna come" it is very fitting for what is going on right now
@@jasonwolski3397 how about 'what's going on'
You made my day doing this one. I know I wish it was longer. His voice just gives me goosebumps on this track.

@@me-pm6mx Sam Cook WROTE and sang "A Change Is Gonna Come". Yes, Otis and many others covered it. Namely Aretha.
@@sereneamani1713 Thanks did not know he wrote it. Wow
This song was used in the 80’s classic movie “Pretty in Pink”....worth trying to find the clip......
Ducky !!😅😍 Jon Cryer at his best!
Allison Young sooooo good....
laura kali Yes!!!
LOOOOOOOOVE when Duckie comes sliiiiiiiding into the record store!!! 💖

Otis Redding was simply one of the greatest musicians ever lived. Just amazing!
My favorite Redding song...never saw this video til a few years ago, but, hey, who needs video when u got ears! I was bout 15-16 then, 70 now, but, his music still rocks my world! Thanks for keeping yourself open to "new" music...
Love watching you listen to new songs for you, watching you see the connections between the musicians and being so open to so many styles is awesome 😎
"These arms of mine" is my favourite Otis song. It takes me to another world away from all worry and strife
Listen to the version of “ Try a Little Tenderness “ on the live album “ Monterey Pop “ , really sets the joint on Fire.
That's a great rendition, though I wish the video had more footage from his performance and less of the festival scenes. Here's another great (and even longer) performance:
