It would be nice if the "restockers" could do this stuff for churches or schools or shelters or foster parents or large families in their community. Those are the only places I can think of that would actually need such large quantities of food and drinks.

I could have sworn I saw a RUclipsr or tik toker who did restock videos and she was a foster parent. It was very interesting. I remember she said she would restock a snack cart that was readily available to the kids so they would know and see that any food and snacks were always available to them.

This makes complete sense because the idea of restocking a guest bathroom that way makes it seem like it would be for something like a homeless shelter that’s regularly cycling people in and out. The only way it makes sense

my father had food insecurity due to lack of access as a child. when he made a more stable income after having me, he wasted hundreds of dollars worth of food each month on groceries that would go bad before we could eat them, for years. he also loved watching these videos before he passed. i think this content taps into a psychological need that many feel is not only comforting but rooted in trauma.

My mom has a tendency to overstock her fridge and freezers. My siblings and I have joked for years that any time our mom sees any free space in the meat freezer or her fridge, she instantly goes to the store to stuff her freezer/fridge full.
My dad is a bit of a minimalist and he always gripes to my mom that she's overdoing it.

I live in an appartment conplex that for some reason always had a problem with meal moths. They seem to just move through the buildings every year. So the only way to avoid ending up with hundreds of little crawleys in my kitchen is to put everything they eat (flour, nuts, seeds, spices, tea etc.) into airtight plastic or glass containers as these stupid things will eat through most packaging. It is the most annoying thing ever. So I can tell you it is no fun at all.

I don't mind walking to the store more that once a week if there's a sale, but around Christmas time people are crazy in supermarkets and walking home with pounds of stuff on my shoulders in 10cm of snow is less appealing. I stock up in early December for the winter so I can enjoy the holidays cooking and doing stuff around the house instead of 'going on an expedition' because I'm running out of flour or whatnot.

I get having a backup in the closet, as we had a restock closet growing up. Out of shampoo? Check the closet before you add it to the Costco list, type thing. If something you regularly use is on sale, stock up, etc. This kind of thing can be important if you live out where it’s inconvenient to get to the shops, so you only go every few months. I even get having a second fridge for drinks, and a separate deep freezer. We’ve had one since part of ours broke and the part was no longer made so it can’t be fixed, but it can still cool drinks just fine, so now it’s the drink fridge. Keeps people out of the kitchen while I cook. Works great for us and it frees up room in the kitchen fridge for bulk cooking. If you’re buying half or a whole cow, you need somewhere to put it and keep it safe to eat as you chip away at it over the next two years. You’re not going to fit all that in a normal freezer. Not even if you get a running start. But that could be my Midwest showing. Bulk buying to save money and cooking from scratch or close to it is in my blood.
That being said, what I said is a far cry from this excessive consumption bs. We don’t need to live in a Target.

I'm just sick of lollies" I wouldn't have been happy with just sugar if I had a mini fridge, it would be "I'll just drink my water and yes I want some lollies but mostly give me fruit please" (even my recent bag of raspberry lollies lasted me a couple of months and the strawberries and cream lollies lasted me 3-5 weeks iirc)

I would've loved to have a mini fridge as a kid, as I got home 2 hours before my mom did (latchkey kid), and couldn't reach the counter for a snack. The workaround? The bottom shelf in the door of the big fridge was mine. Full sized water bottles were used, I was just told to put them back if I didn't finish all of it. If I did finish it, toss it up onto the counter and Mama will refill it when she gets home. Snack bags of trail mix, cups of yogurt, cheese sticks, apple juice boxes....not a damn one in another container. They were just put in the shelf wherever they fit. A mini fridge for the kid is lovely if they can't open that big fridge door, but ultimately, unnecessary. Teach the kid how to open the door at their height, they’ll be fine.

I think restocks in particular play off of the “oddly satisfying” thrill a lot of people get, particularly when the boxes/organizers/drinks fit in a shelf/drawer *just perfectly*, so there’s a Tetris-like satisfaction without the more tense anticipation because you can see it’s pretty much always going to fit perfectly. I think that’s where a lot of the popularity and the calming aspect come into it more than just cleaning videos.

The only thing that lasted was the glass jar for the scent beads. Everything else was deemed too impractical (at best) to continue refilling. If you look back years ago at their videos, their clear fridge was always stocked with very organized snacks and drinks just like they do nowadays. She would always keep her candy stocked and her snacks stocked, and you know that they did not eat these foods because, they were very weight conscious. But I think that aesthetic started with them. One reason I really like videos like these restocks is that I have ADHD and simultaneously cannot stand clutter while constantly feeling overwhelmed as I try to start things. I never know where to start, but some of the asmr cleaning or restock videos give me a jumping off point to have someone kind of holding my hand. I have someone's nice fridge cleaning come up in my FYP and even on days where my to do list has seemed so daunting, I will be like "ooh you know, I could wipe down those shelves and put the nonperishables away!" and I'll just listen to them while I work. It's a nice feeling to know that my stuff can look nice too - it won't be as fancy, I know I'm in a different tax bracket than some of these influencers - but the introduction of cleaning that has no judgement attached makes it a lot easier for me. So many tools you find are still so negative surrounding cleaning as a difficult task. The lack of commentary about how "messy things were" and them just showing you how to clean is really good for my neurogivergent brain that thinks cleaning is a software update I've been desperately trying to find for nearly 30 years! There is definitely something to be said about the aestheticization of over consumption, though. For me, it just allows me to have a little more spacial awareness with the items I do buy for the family and be able to find better ways to sort them

For one, I can end up daydreaming about having a spacious, aesthetic, organised home instead of actually doing the cleaning.
Or seeing a beautiful setup will send me on a side quest of devising the 'perfect' system (often involving buying new furniture or trays) instead of working with the constraints of what I already have.
Seeing cool new gadgets, pretty products or tasty foods in the videos is also risky because of poor impulse control.

1 financial - I make six figures of and I can't justify the restock lifestyle. It's expensive unless you have crazy money or use it as a business to be an online salesperson. I don't think most can responsibly spend and have that lifestyle.

My family shopped at Costco and Walmart a lot because in many cases it is cheaper to buy things in bulk vs making multiple trips to a regular grocery store. Stuff like snacks that you put in your kids lunch every day, baking supplies, canned food etc. But those things last months.
These restocks make it seem like these people never cook real food. Stocking up on fresh fruit and vegetables is silly because they spoil. They’re lacking in components to make actual meals. Who only buys mini versions of products? I feel like many of these influencers are taking out the same items and putting them back in.

My apartment is tiny and the fridge is half size and inly has the wire racks in it. No drawers, no door shelves. These videos were mildly helpful to give me ideas of how to organize a month’s worth of food in there. Due to the heat and humidity in my area I have things like a butter dish (gifted to me by my grandma). I have tupperware to put dry goods in (purchased new and also passed down from aunts, mom, and grandma) we can’t drink the tap water where I live unless we boil it first so we have about 4 35 packs on hand at a time. However it is the safeway brand water or aquafina if we bougie lol. We have a bullet ice machine from wal mart because we have no room in the freezer for trays. This is all born of necessity and preventing waste tho. Like if I use flour and then leave it in the bag, the bag may get damp from humidity and mold. A lot of my organizing stuff is from the dollar tree and the clearance section of overstock stores tho.

I wouldn't even know where to get these fun sized snacks other than around Halloween when they're all over stores as well, so maybe that's an American thing. 😂

The fun sized candy/snacks are year round, yes (at Walmart, to my knowledge). People who tend to lots of kids often get them to give out little treats or rewards sometimes (think daycare or young students in school) and families don't get them often.
I doubt the people making these tiktoks are all teachers or run places prone to have many children.

With the ice tock stuff, I consider it a blessing to have a refrigerator that filters and dispenses cool water and has crushed and cubed ice options. Considering all the years of those ice cube mold thingys to make ice, having it come out of the refrigerator via the front of the refrigerator is beautiful ❤.

The three travel razors are wild to me. I bought one of these a couple of years ago b/c I have a medically complex son that has a lot of hospital stays, so I put together a toiletry bag that I could quickly throw into a suitcase, including that same razor. It's really nice, but I dont understand why her guests would need 3 unless they were staying for like 6 months.

There is a creator here, Hannah Alonzo, who has a video about this as well where she found that many creators are recycling multiple videos with different text/colors/other things. So these people who make these restock videos are doing this week in and week our because even they cannot afford it.

peronsally i watch restock videos because usually their food is particularly healthy , there’s lots of vegetables, fruit, and meat, lemon water, other fruits in water… but as well as the sense of fulfillment i get from seeing a full clean fridge. it’s very unattainable for me because obviously you have to be so wealthy to have these things, i think that’s another factor. i like to live vicariously through these creators because i aspire to eat healthy, and have the wealth for a full fridge.

Having a fridge full of good and healthy food is a luxury a lot of us can’t afford right now. Fresh produce are becoming more and more expensive.
I aspire to have the means to not worry about sells and not stress about food prices. I just want to eat good food and not fear I will run out of stuff. This content play into that

Wild that it drives such an expensive expectation for groceries for example, and then they also make money off of the content and it essentially could pay for itself making it even more unobtainable. Reminds me of when i had to buy some pants and saw a tag id never seen before, along the lines of „returns for reasons of change of mind will not be accepted without this tag attatched“, making me think thats how they were trying to crack down on OOTD content purchasing and returning clothes after photographing them.

If you arrive at an airport at 12, and don't have a toothbrush and there's nowhere to get one, your teeth won't rot away if you don't brush them that night. Your hair won't have to be cut off if you don't brush it before bed. Your body odor won't start smelling like a corpse if it waits a night. Or gods have mercy, use soaps that's already open.

54:37 I think that, in some cases (not the ice cube ones!) the fact that this can be written off on taxes is very overlooked. If someone can get $200-$300 of bathroom stuff (which they/their family of 2-??? will eventually use most of) basically for free just because they filmed it and put it on TikTok, that might be appealing for someone who otherwise can’t afford to do that, after all, this is their job.

I am watching this from the perspective of a Christian, and you hit the nail on the head perfectly with a covetous aspect of restock videos. I can't even begin to tell you how much of a cognitive dissonance I have when I observe any form of restock video whether it's crafting related, kitchen related, cleaning related, or anything else. The world tells me that I should desire what I am seeing with my eyes, yet the spirit within tells me that all of that is worthless and meaningless, that it will fade away or be destroyed. In the faith we are told to avoid the lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. These restock and aesthetic videos 100% go against that.
Thank you so much for being one of the many voices speaking out against this grotesque display of greed.

I AM SO GLAD TO SEE THIS DISCUSSED, I’ve searched for videos about it for years because I’m really into art & a bunch of little Knick Knacks, like blind boxes, back when they weren’t really a cash grab and it was just a cute commodity option vs. the regular product line, BUT now every company makes things a blind box. Like it’s insane. The quality of the items inside has also massively decreased, I’m assuming to compensate the overproduction of the products but it’s sad because now it just feels greedy and gross to support these companies when they’re doing it without giving any option to get the items elsewhere because they know people will spend more to complete sets, almost like legalized gambling on a consumer level on top of extreme mass production of things that didn’t need to be mass produced to that level or in that way

Thank you for another thought provoking and relevant video, Shawna! I try to reject what I consider excess consumerism but definitely fall prey to the Diderot effect of continually upgrading & getting more aesthetically pleasing items when replacing possessions, though I usually try to wait until I "need" a new item (as in damaged beyond repair or lost) and look for used/pre-owned for most goods before buying new. I justify this practice by telling myself the things I am upgrading to are higher quality, will have increased longevity, and that I will take better care of them, but I haven't really analyzed this to know if it's true. I'm going to go back and rewatch your videos on the subject.

When I spend the night at my mom's or best friend's house, they are gracious enough to let me use their products. When we visited family out of state, they had a guest bedroom and guest bathroom that had *basics* - one full-size shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. They had towels for us to use as well.

I mean, the ones that dont have the extra storage devices, could just be "organizing" instead of restocking, maybe adding one or two new types of drinks. I mean, I had 3 different icecube trays in my college mini fridge, they took up most of the freezer space. I felt like that amount was good for one person, since i drink juice a lot, in my own reusable cups, I always have Ice in my drinks. And I had 3 water bottles one for my bedside (loft), and two to fill for both daily use and to fill ice trays, the tap water was bad, and I kept running out with one over the weekends.

i got REALLY into these videos for a time -- i was at the very beginning of my anorexia recovery and still struggling with food hoarding, and i grew up food insecure. these videos were (and still sometimes are) totally aspirational as someone who grew up with a fridge full of mold and very little food, and then spent large portions of their adolesence very malnourished. my malnourished brain was OBSESSED with any food content (would spend hoursss reading/watching recipes) and fridge restocks were def a way that came out !!!
as i've nutritionally rehabilitated i've enjoyed them way less, as my urge to food hoard has decreased since my body sees no need for it anymore. but it was wilddd for a bit
