- Carlos Watson had an impressive resume. He went to Harvard then Stanford, worked with Bill Clinton, successfully built and sold companies, and was a regular political and business commentator on several TV shows. The digital media boom of the early 2010s became the setting for Carlos's next big launch: OZY Media. He envisioned a platform that was ahead of the curve and reported on topics that mainstream publications weren't covering. His empire of blogs, newsletters, podcasts, videos and TV shows was pretty spectacular, and his staff really felt like their work was making an impact...However, every rise has a fall, every boom has a bust...

The fact that he named his company after Ozymandias is so ironic in an uncanny way.
As someone in their thirties who read Gawker every day and other fringe publications, I can say that I have never heard of OZY in my entire life.
It was one of those sites whose ad you click on accidentally.

It gets a bad rep for the ridiculous quizzes and “posts” that just regurgitate content from whatever platforms are popular at the time. Buzzfeed is actually a pretty diverse company.

His videos on RUclips used to get 200k views and zero comments, it was so fishy. I remember how hard they pushed ads in NYC for a year or two. I had a little fun and would leave comments about how little interaction their videos had despite hundreds of thousands of views, and out of nowhere I had throwaway accounts harassing me and my family on instagram, which I forgot was listed on my RUclips account. Employees of the Carlos Watson show were 100% attacking anyone who was giving the channel a hard time and leaving comments.
Just goes to show RUclips view counts can't be trusted. Even comments can be botted

Then I remembered an article from the late 2010s saying Google employees used Microsoft emails for business relations for some odd reason.
I think the odd reason is that Microsoft Outlook is more secure. The standard in the tech industry is Outlook, so if the guys who know security pick that over Gmail...

Eugene Robinson was the singer in early 80s hardcore punk band Whipping Boy, and fronts noise-rock outfit Oxbow these days.
Carlos should’ve just work his way up the corporate world and could have made more money and have more influence.
Its kind of crazy how they at the start already had the money and image to start making content fair and square, even if it wasnt gonna blow up, if they kept selling to big channels, they couldve made it by their own, but they wanted to be a boom by any means

You feel sorry for Carlos? I don't, he's a con artist. His intentions weren't "noble"- he was trying to make a media empire and he was building it on lies. Nothing about that is "noble".
Also, on a side note, I feel like anyone who shows 100% of their teeth 100% of the time is a scam artist.

Tbf, Malcolm Gladwell has been shown to be bit of a grifter, writing books on subjects he knows little about, sometimes factually wrong on specific points and often using anecdotal evidence. He seems like a nice guy, who writes to the crowd rather than to his expertise.

Most of the employees wouldn't have known it was a fraud. They were too busy trying to meet their reporting deadlines and targets to properly scrutinise the financial records of the company and just accepted what they were being told by the higher-ups.
