- On June 29, 1995, tragedy struck Seoul, South Korea, as the prestigious Sampoong Department Store collapsed, claiming 502 lives and injuring nearly 1000 others in just 20 seconds. Corruption in Korea and how it leads to so many people's untimely death is such an atrocious topic I'd like to know more about. It seems to be also the cause of the ferry that sank with a bunch of kids in it. Just corruption after corruption in order to make a quick buck, or rather not spend a penny towards the safety of people. Unfortunate consequence of rapid modernization :(

Hard to believe I only discovered this wonderful channel today. I love that the channel covers a broad spectrum of unbelievable but true stories. Documentary quality.
This disaster was incredible sad. I remember watching "Seconds from disasters" in the 2000s about this.
In the 3d largest city in my country the same thing happened. They decided to add a huge food court on the upper floor of a mall with no support pillars, just the walls. Luckily the roof collapsed at night when the mall was empty and no lives were lost. Greed trumps humanity for certain people.

I just saw a REALLY good video essay about this by Rotten Mango. This is why i like watching videos on the same subject, i THINK in her video she mentioned that the dude's son is not liked in south korea and no one knows where he is whereas you mentioned he became a missionary

@@Justin_0241 TBH hers is way longer and goes into way more detail but i'm just saying even if you watch an hour long podcast on a subject, one or two things may be missed that a smaller video may have in it. Not saying one is better than the other.

No. "Sam" just means "three". Samsung is a "chaebol", a type of gigantic Korean conglomerate made up of businesses in many different fields. Samsung is 삼성 or 三星 literally "three stars". Sampung is 삼풍 or 三豐, only meaning I can find is a small city in Japan.
