The Long Dark is actually my zen garden game. The art style and soundscape are really great, and once you get good enough at it, there's not a massive amount of stress unless you ramp up the difficulty to a ridiculous degree.
Out of sheer laziness I have eaten just dry oatmeal. Besides being chewy and choking a bit on the flavoring powders, its pretty much just cereal variant. Does make you thirstier though.
To help people out with what Mike and Zank mention @ 6:20. Imagine paying 100 dollar boots vs 500 dollar boots. If you work em hard, the 100 dollar might last you a year, aren't really repairable, and the quality and comfort leaves a lot to be desired. The 500 will last you 10+ (especially with good up keep) can be resoled every once in a while, are made with quality materials (trust me, the real leather is worth it), and can even be bespoke, leading to excellent quality and comfort. So 100 every year, vs 500 up front, and maybe 60, 70 every 3 or 4 years. Its why Aldi's gives a stipend of eighty dollars a year for steel toed shoes. They expect them to be finished in a year, sooner if you work them harder than usual.
I feel like this used to be true, but isn't anymore. Even the real expensive leather work boots are shot in 2 years, and if you're replacing the sole, lowers and uppers, you're just getting a new boot anyway.
Also depends on the type of work you're doing. Masons, especially the labourers will burn through boots insanely fast even with the most durable boots out there. That said, the crappy ones won't even last a season. Many other trades, while on their feet just as much, typically aren't putting the same type of wear on their boots, and so they'll last a lot longer whether crap or expensive. That said, still buy the expensive boots. If your feet aren't comfortable, every day sucks. Make sure your boots actually fit properly too.
Only thing about scarfs in this game, they should be stackable, you can tie these things together and use them to ‘pack’ eachother, I often tie my scarf around my head to make a tight fitting hat.
Zach is right about the socks, I switched over to merlino wool/synthetic blend years ago for the entire year. Last a long time, breathe amazingly well, all times of year *I work on roofs throughout the entire year and not having to think about my feet is a huge help*
The biggest two things to learn about the $100 vs $500 boot situation is knowing where the diminishing returns start to arise, and that cost doesn't automatically equal value.
I got 4 years out of my $230 Red Wing boots, wearing them 6 days a week and being on my feet for work. I _personally_ find Red Wings to be in the sweet spot for me, but I don't get the ones that be resoled so the boot lasting only as long as the sole works for me.
Something to note for my fellow viewers, they said last episode these were recorded before game awards they hadn't heard of tld2 yet and it also appears they aren't on the newest update yet as there is no safehouse customization button
I always wear two pairs of merino wool socks for work. Old hotshot trick to keep your feet from cooking while on the fireline. And I callous up before I blister because of it. Soaks up the sweat and adds more cushion. Have a lot of pairs of socks that have lasted years of tree care work. A thinner inner sock and thicker outer keeps the bulk down.
I believe Timberwolves only spawn in 2 regions, which are Blackrock and Bleak Inlet, those 2 regions have the ammosmith and milling machine so naturally they got the harder wolf varient. Also for any yall new Long Dark players, the bleak inlet workshop with the ammosmith can have a wolf spawn inside of it. And if it's an auroua, thats a double whammy, almost died to it when I went to it.
Since the recent updates, I've heard they're also in Mystery Lake, which is a big turn off for me, since that was one of my favourite regions. I can't stand Timberwolves.

The bear coming by the town, I think has always been a part of the whiteout challenge. I remember my first attempt, I was leaving one of the houses to the right of the garage. Over-encumbered, I snuck out the door, I sneak over the snow bank and a wolf spots me. The wolf is straight ahead, between me and the back door to the garage. It barks, takes one step towards then turns tail and runs away whining. I'm confused for half a sec until I hear this roar on my left, I whip in that direction to see a bear on its hind legs, closer to me than the wolf was 😅 The bear did not kill me, it mauled me yes. But the wolf came back 😂

I got through this challenge fairly well, even got a big haul from Pleasant Valley. I was short some food though, even after killing a bear right outside the garage on day 27. I had to heal from it attacking me for the 28th day, and then spent the entirety of the 29th day fishing, even using emergency stims to try and get as much as possible. I made it back right before the timer was up, but I was short like 500 calories worth of food
On my first playthrough I found the rifle on day 100 or something like that, and it was in one of those fishing shacks in the middle of the lake, they're a pretty rare find

If i remember and heard correctly, Hinterland said they might adjust the spawns to be more rare especially in the more "safe" religions. (Reminder again that Blackrock in fact had Timberwolves previously anyways). as for the maps, honestly i like the more sparce/difficult areas, but when i random spawn in them i definitely get more freaked out. honestly if they had added one or two more "safer" regions it would've been nice, but eehh yea,
