I dodged a huge bullet with Ian back in 2012. They played Warped Tour and I remember walking around on the grounds to find my friends when I ran into him. I apologized and then soon after realizing who he was, I was starstruck. I asked him for a hug and he gave me one. Soon after, he asked me if I wanted to come to the side of the stage to see his band play because he was about to go on, but I told him I was looking for my friends and turned him down. He was kinda persistent about it at first, but seemed to understand and let me go on my merry little way. A few months later that same year, the news about him came out and I was disgusted. Now I understand why he was so persistent with me.

His girlfriend had to literally BEG police to do something because this poor woman saw literal cp on his computer and he would BRAG ABOUT IT to her, and they never took her seriously and looked down on her because she was a sex worker. I've read the court documents (i do not recommend, at all whatsoever, just...don't do it). The two-year-old mentioned in this video is unfortunately not even his youngest victim. He is straight-up evil. Thank god that woman informed police but they took their sweet fucking time getting off their asses and actually doing their job. 35 years isn't enough. He needs to be locked up for life cuz I honestly believe he's incredibly dangerous.

Like he didnt know junko, i didnt, no one will ever be able to really know her, so to assume what she was thinking and feeling feels wrong. It also feels too pretty and poetic for such a raw horrible event, idk its one thing to write about a case from an outsiders perspective but to do it from the victims is a little...ehh

Exactly what I was thinking. There’s definitely a respectful way to make a song about a tragedy - and he just didn’t do it. There’s no art or no meaning to the song as far as I can tell other than “this girl suffered, here’s what *I* think it was like from her perspective.” It isn’t showing respect to her or anything. It just feels wrong.

I feel like writing a song from a victim’s perspective is extremely hard because you never know how much they went through. I feel like 44 days could have been written better with more thought. I remember when ian watkins was on trial. There was a group of superfans who were adamant he was innocent and would harass people who they felt were working against him. It was an interesting look at the conspiratorial mindset. The evidence against him was rock solid, his crimes so appalling, but these fans had built their entire personalities around watkins and they would rather drive themselves mad than let go. I'm more disturbed by the video to "A Town Called Hypocrisy" than the actual song. Knowing what we now know regarding Watkins, just seeing him surrounded by kids in the video is gross and makes me feel uneasy..... makes me feel dirty for still kinda headbanging to the song every now and then because I still enjoy it as a song alongside 3 other Lostprophets songs, "Rooftops", "Shinobi VS. Dragon Ninja" and "Last Train Home".

When it comes to disturbing Xiu Xiu songs, I'm very surprised you didn't go with Niece's Pieces or Mary Turner, Mary Turner.
Niece's Pieces, lyrically, is about Jaime Stewart contemplating the dark parts of his family history in the days leading up to his niece's birth. And Mary Turner, Mary Turner is about the actual, real life murder of Hazel Turner, Mary Turner and Mary's unborn and unnamed child.
    "Looking up, looking up,
The first and only light it ever sees:
The flames, the flames of its mother's burning, burning.
    Reaching out, reaching out,
The first and only loving touch it receives,
The falling ash of its mommy's hair on fire."

The Ian Watkins stuff was...I don't have the word for it. I listened to them a lot as a young teenager when I first discovered emo music and was well into the sub-culture. Naturally, I loved Ian. Lostprophets actually came to my small town when I was 14 and were playing at my favorite small venue, a venue I'd been to many times before and had also met plenty of bands before after shows (it was super easy to meet artists back then, especially at that particular venue where most people would just hang around outside). My friend and I wanted to go and specifically wanted to meet Ian afterwards. But her mom wouldn't let my friend go, and since she couldn't go, I couldn't go. I don't want to say that something for sure would've happened to us. Maybe if we met him it would've been a chat, a pic and that was that. But after all of that stuff came out about him years later, and I really looked into the allegations and his...type??? I guess you could say?? I honestly can't say for sure that something *wouldn't* have happened because at 14, i looked *extremely* young for my age, and considering how often he would brazenly invite minors backstage, on his bus, to hotel rooms...idk man. I think I might've dodged a missile and the thought is terrifying. It cannot be understated how evil this guy is. It's been ten years since I've read those court documents and I will never forget what I read. 35 years isn't enough. He needs to never see the light of day again.

A song I recommend looking into is Healthy End by Shiinamota/Powapowa-P
Shiinamota was a Japanese vocaloid producer who struggled greatly with mental health and growing up, in 2015 he (allegedly, it’s not publicly confirmed but all the signs are there) took his own life, and before he passed away he gave the song “ Healthy End “ to a friend to finish and upload after he had already passed away. Parts of it feel almost like a final message from him.

The song by At the Drive In made me realize there's a similar song I guarantee you nobody has covered on one of these channels: Juarez by Tori Amos, from 1999. Tori is the founder of RAINN.
Dropped off the edge again down in Juarez
    "Don't even bat an eye
If the eagle cries" the rasta man says
    Just cause the desert likes
    Young girls flesh and
    No angel came
    No angel came
I don't think you even know
What you think you just said
So go on and spill your seed,
Shake your gun to the Rastaman's head
'Cause the desert, she must be blessed and
    No angel came
    No angel came (listen, darling)
    No angel came
There's a time to keep it up, a time to keep it in
The Indian is told the cowboy is his friend
A time to keep it up, boys, a time to keep it in
The Indian is told the cowboy is his friend
You know that I can breathe even when I cheat
Should, should, should, should've been over for me
    No angel came
    No angel came
    No angel came (listen, darling)
    No angel came

    No angel came

At The Drive-In and their sister project The Mars Volta have a ton of lyrics that are introspective towards darker things. I highly recommend TMV's song Equus 3, which is thought to be about actor Danny Masterson having Cedric's dog killed and sexually assaulting Cedric's wife. Furthermore, their entire album Frances The Mute is a crazy dark story, and has roots in actual tragedy regarding the passing of a band member.

De-Loused is the album you're thinking of, not Frances, and it was not actually about a band member, but a friend of Cedric's- although a founding member of the band did pass away just one month before the release of the album. Still very sad stuff ):

if you want another one that ties into the mars volta track, check out 'January 10, 2014' by The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, it's about a woman who went vigilante on that. whole situation and, to this day, has never been caught.
also, an important thing you left out of 'real death' is that the entire album was recorded using his wife's instruments (she was also a musician -- one of my favorites -- originally went by WOELV but then changed her name to Ô Pain), in her room, next to the bed she died in. I'm old as balls and have been a fan of Phil since _The Glow, Pt. 2_ and A Crow Looked At Me was a _huge_ change of pace for him, usually he would spend AGES recording something, taking forever writing layers of music and lyrics and recording it in this big church he's turned into a recording space on a giant ancient broken 24 track analog machine. him shifting to just _barfing_ out songs that are made of _pure_ anguish in a single take on instruments that aren't his own and putting out this _masterpiece_ of grief is. the man is talented lol. it's a great album, but it's so damn hard to listen to. makes me cry instantly.

Sorry I'm late, but here's a couple ideas for a future installment:
    1) "Wishing (I Had a Photograph of You)" by A Flock of Seagulls. It was based on an experience where the lead singer, Mike Score, met a woman and spent some time getting to know her. When it came time for him and his band to go on tour, he asked the woman if he could have a photograph before departing. She refused because she believed that he would go on to become famous and forget her. Just the fact that he never got to see her again, let alone have a token to remember her by, makes the story pretty unsettling for me.
    2) "Cars" by Gary Numan. Like the previous song, this is based on a true event. This event involved Gary in a road rage incident. He was stuck in traffic, and some people wanted to beat him up... for some reason. The fact that his car was thankfully locked provided a safe haven for him.

A song I never see on these lists is Human Sadness by The Voidz. It's about Julian Casablancas (the lead singer) being abused and neglected by his father (Hits you on the head and says "Come here, can you fix my tie?"), along with the chord progression being that of the last song Mozart wrote before he died (Requiem). It's a hauntingly beautiful song.
Another song I think deserves to be on this list is I Will Follow You Into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie. It's about the lead singer, Ben telling the person he loves about what he would do if they died. "Love of mine, someday you will die, but I'll be close behind. I'll follow you into the dark." (Following them into the dark representing suicide). "If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied, and illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs; if there's no one beside you, when your soul embarks, then I'll follow you into the dark." I am not religious by any means, but I believe the comments about heaven and hell are meant to represent the unknown. This was so long because I relate a LOT to this song because I know I would do the same thing if I lost my boyfriend. I can't listen to this song without crying lol
(Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult is another song that I would put on here. It's about the inevitability of death and how you shouldn't fear The Reaper, obviously meant to represent death itself. "Came to her last night of sadness, it was clear she couldn't go on." I think that line is meant to represent Buck's wife dying, and the follow up lines "Then the door was open and the wind appeared, the candles blew and then disappeared, the curtains flew and then he appeared, saying don't be afraid." Are meant to represent death finally coming for her, and the very last verse of the song, "Come on, baby (and she had no fear), and she ran to him (then they started to fly), they looked backward and said goodbye (she had become like they are), she had taken his hand (she had become like they are), come on, baby (don't fear the reaper)" Is her finally passing on. This combined with the haunting guitar, the cowbell which I think is meant to represent the clock of death slowly ticking, chiming in every few seconds and being completely absent during the guitar solo which I think is meant to represent death. Truly a beautiful song.
Sorry if this whole thing was messy, I tried to formulate it best I could.

A band and a distrubing-ish song that I would recommend is Primus' My Name is Mud. The band Primus formed around late 1980s and got popular in the early 90s in the funk metal genre, similar to Bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers and stuff like that. Tho what separate Primus from other bands was singer and Bassists Les Claypool's quirky bass lines and wacky lyrics, songs ranging from a fisherman named John, to a cat named Tommy who swings for girls near a milk bar. However in their 1993 album Pork Soda, there is a song in there that I find kinda disturbing and definitely shocking. Its called "My Name is Mud". The title refers to someone being called Mud, which is basically slang for an idoit or unintelligent person, second- its instrumentals sound very wonky and odd, feels like your listening to a busted radio thats distorted. But what really gets the song are it's lyrics, there may not be a whole story behind the song (or atleast not to my knowledge), but I believe its still worth talking about since it's about a murder between our main character "mud" and his friend (who mud murders). I won't spoil much else of the song, but I highly encourage you guys to listen to it, really good stuff

Always love to see some Xiu Xiu representation! One of my favorite bands for their extremely raw approach to music
Also just to add a little bit more context to I Luv the Valley OH! The lyrics about having to take the pill is taken from a conversation with Jamie’s late father who urged him to take his antidepressants.

I never knew that about Invalid Litter Department. Ive been listening to that song for years and years, i knew it was about something much more serious than most of their lyrics but never bothered to see what it was about. Very cool.

I was introduced to “Real Death” while I was going through a rough patch in my life. The pure, unadulterated grief and pain presented by that song is very meaningful to me, and never fails to hit me in the stomach.

For Xiu Xiu, you used the proper album covers, but attributed them oppositely. Contextually and thematically, even though the song in question appears on neither album, that is important if anyone decides to dig deeper.
    Just an FYI!

I really fucking hate when people use Junko’s case for stories, songs or anything entertainment wise. Let the poor girl rest ya weirdos.

If you ever do another one of these, I'd look into Giles Corey's self-titled album. It's packaged in with a 120-page booklet that is semi-autobiographical about s*icide.

A Crow Looked At Me will forever be one of my absolute favorite albums. It’s up there alongside Nick Drake’s Pink Moon, Giles Corey’s self-titled, and Elliott Smith’s Either/Or (the whole discography of Elliott Smith honestly). It is definitely music, what it’s definitely not is entertainment. The peak of sincerity and authenticity in music.

I've listened to Mr. Kitty, along with Crystal Castles. I love these two bands/groups. The lyrics are disturbing, and the music is oddly satisfying. I also have listened to Mister Scoops, whose music is also dark, sometimes loud and irritating to others. Mister Scoops is a special case, since they are not on Spotify, and only on RUclips. You also cannot find their channel now, which is even more odd, but the music stains the internet, forever living only in memory. These weird electronic, digital type tunes are nostalgic for me, it reminds me of the 2000's and my childhood.

idk if you’ve already covered it but Sleep, Famous Last Words, and desert song (all) by my chemical romance have heavy themes and backstories. I mean, of course mcr has heavy songs but these are the heaviest in particular. I don’t want to spoil anything but basically, desert song is devastating to listen to and is even more so when you know what it’s about. Sleep and Famous Last Words are both on the album The Black Parade, that was written in a haunted house. Those two tracks in particular are haunting when you know that fact.

love these videos ^^ a song I would recommend is 64 Little White Things by Cake Bake Betty I found the combination of lyricism and instrumental in of itself unsettling but the song is also said to use cannibalism as a metaphor for prostitution

"Possum Kingdom" by The Toadies was popular in my day. It sounds so upbeat until you hear its kyrics and realize this guy is luring a woman to be murdered....
