Now THIS is a "How To" video. No long-winded introduction and the mundane parts sped up for expediency. 5 stars!!!!!
Thanks Bryan!
I wish all diy videos where like this one
My thoughts exactly
What was the purpose of having to replace this? Was it leaking water there? We ha e a Bradford White that is dripping water from behind the box even with the water shut off. A $240 repair would be a lot better than a full $700 replacement!!!
and no blaring music!
That idea of using the pipe to take the control valve off really helped. Even the dude at AO Smith had no idea about that. Thank you!
I know you posted this years ago, but still would like to thank you. Very rarely one finds a perfect professional with not just technical knowledge but a flawless English diction. Thank you!
I viewed 5 vids on how to change out a controller, and this was by far the best, no idle chit chat, just straight to business.Well done!
Thanks TheAmtrack69!
Yup. To the freaking point
Exactly what The Amtrack69 said...Thank you!!

Agreed! Best By Far!
Can't thank you enough for posting this video. I replaced the thermopile and pilot tube but still couldn't get the pilot to stay lit. Only thing left was the valve. I was a bit reluctant to tackle that as I've never worked with gas piping but thought, 'pipe is pipe', just the contents are different. Bought a refurbished valve for $80 and with your help, had it in within a couple hours. Heater was only 12 years old and it's just my wife and I using it. She was yammering to get a new one but I saw no evidence of rust under the tank or in the water I drained so thought I'd try and save some major dollars. With your excellent guidance, I succeeded. I can't tell you the satisfaction I felt when that status light started flashing and I fired up the burner. Two months later I'm still going in the laundry room just to look at that blinking light and say, "I did it!" Thanks again!!
I can become a unlicensed plumber just by watching your videos great job
You couldn't have made it simpler. Thanks a million.
I just got quoted $900 to do this yesterday. I didn’t think it was worth it and only paid a $70 visitation fees. Thank you for this video because I’m 100% confident I can do this myself. May God bless you.
You couldn't have made it simpler. Thanks a million
Excellent DIY video….I agree with Bryan. No long winded history of plumbing and the water heater…just a comprehensive step by step how-to video. Five stars from me also. I think you put some of these guys in front of a camera and microphone and the narcissism kicks in….they think they’re RUclips stars.
PERFECT! Clear, concise, no unnecessary blabbing or LOUD MUSIC! Very well done.
Thank you Earl Fields!
@@PROSDIY thanks... very clear👍👍👍
Agreed. One of the best helpful videos I have seen . I subscribed just because it doesn’t have any fluff.
Always wonder why people put music on a video when they are showing how to do something.
Excellent…..the gold standard for RUclips instructional videos of ANY kind…..even more impressive because the manual actions don’t seem to have been sped up but rather the skill and precision involved are incredible…….a masterpiece!
Just had a plumber quote me $534 to do this, I watched this video (best one I found on RUclips) and completed it for $150-ish. Thanks for posting!
Glad the video was helpful. Thank you!
Same
I was quoted $1100 and am so glad I did some homework before they arrived so I knew what was reasonable.
Do we have to have this gas control installed? I have two water Rehm water heaters, none of them has this gas control.
Everyone already said what I was going to say.... I followed it perfectly and it took 15 mins to change out the part. Perfect video.... great job!!!
The most concise and logical presentation of a gas control valve change available with all safety and gotcha factors clearly noted. The airlock method of installation without draining the tank shows the depth of knowledge of the presenter. Well photographed. Excellent
Thank you! Cheers!
I love how you just get straight to the point and don’t go on and on about random stuff!👍🏼
Perfect, no long intro, no stupid music, good editing...thank you!
this is the gold standard of educational video -pro all the way no face shots just expert demo!!!!
Thank you for this video, made swapping out the module quick and easy. Much respect.
Well done. I'm a retired plumber/gasfitter and your instructions were bang on.
Thank you! I appreciate the positive feedback. Cheers!
Straight forward and to the point. Great video! Excellent do it yourself video!
Truly the DEFINITION of a tutorial video, very thorough, no unnecessary bullshit or rambling by some goofy who loves hearing the sound of his own voice.. Great video, thanks
I replaced my own thermocouple assembly, and gas control valve on my water heater using these videos and discussion in the comments. Thank you! Thank you! For these videos. Clear and perfect!
Thank you Roman Thru! Nice job on your repair!
My tank will not ignite after many attempts to try. Do you think changing my thermocouple will fix this problem ? I need some advice please .
Finally a video that was fast, precise and no useless talking. 5 star, I changed mine in 10 minutes
Great video, just what was I looking for! Quick and direct instructions.
Thank you so much!
My water heater pilot light will not stay lit. I know it is not the thermal overload because I've done that in the past. The plumbing company came out and said it's "probably" the gas control valve. He gave me an estimate of $1,300 to $1,500 to replace it, or over $3,000 to replace the entire water heater (which I just installed myself 7 years ago). I know my way around tools and equipment, so I found a new exact replacement gas control valve on Amazon for around $190. After watching this video, I'm very confident it's something I can do myself. Thank you for posting this. It's very informative without all the extra babbling on and on about other irrelevant things (plus, the control valve in the video looks exactly like mine). Two thumbs up!
Great video! Relatively simple task. Saved me a ton of money having to call a plumber - simple, easy to understand, no 5 minute intro. Just got right to business
Thank you! Glad the video was helpful. Cheers!
I replaced the whole dang thing and it is doing awesome. No leaks anywhere and hotwater is back! 10 Stars!
Simple, but comprehensive, straight to the point and job at hand, excellent primer on changing gas valve on regular atmospheric vented water heater.
Thank you for this excellent video!! Very straightforward without a lot of meaningless, unnecessary chit chat. Great video with clear visuals. Best video on how to change a Gas Valve on RUclips! Very well done. THANK YOU
Thank you for a get it done quicker explanation of it all! I also love the fact that you showed a possibility of not having to drain the whole tank!
I been watching many, many videos explaining how to change the thermostat in my water heater. No doubt this is the most comprehensive one.
Thanks!!
Thank you Fernando Clavijo
!
Bloody great instructional video, clear and complete with a professional tip thrown in for nothing. Thanks a million.
This is an excellent video, because it has EXPLANATIONS for various steps and things to watch out for!
I just want to say thank you so much for that trick about not having to drain the whole tank to change out the gas valve. I learnef something new today and tried it - worked great. Saved me tons of time. Thank you so much for making this video!
Awesome! Nice job on your repair!
It shouldn't take that long to drain a 40 or 60 gallon tank. Now mine was draining really slowly so I took a washer hose and connected to a garden hose and the drain line on the water heater, then I opened the pressure relief valve and gave it a good 30s at full blast. Disconnected the garden hose from the faucet and then water drained from the tank in a few minutes. Just throwing that out there for anyone that may have a slow draining tank.
This video is great. Perfect video to instruct me how to change out my gas control valve. It was short enough but informative. Straight to the point, easy to follow and able to show someone with no experience doing such a project how to easily complete it properly. Thank you so much and my family also thanks you for helping return hot water to our home.
Concise, straightforward, and has some very good tips.
The part about covering the pilot tube and burner supply with a towel (plastic sheeting) - very important. Any water you get inside (especially the pilot tube) is going to cause problems with lighting and operation.
You may want to consider flushing the tank as part of this procedure to remove sediment etc. This is important to extend the life of your tank + improve your heater's efficiency.
Don't forget to check the condition /operation of your TPR valve and piping, too.
When my plumber didn't return a call I watched this video and was able to replace the controller myself. Thank you for saving my teenagers from cold showers. I subscribed to your channel as well. Outstanding video.
Thank you! Nice job on your repair!
Thanks so much for posting this video. Was a quick easy fix for more brother who fixed my water heater. Right to the point with no long winded explanations.
The tip on not draining the water heater was very helpful, worked great for me. Note that if you are working with a propane heater, the manifold tube will have left-hand threads.
Glad the video was helpful! That is excellent information about propane that I forgot to include. Thanks for sharing!
What a great help! I had forgotten the procedure for replacing the T-Stat without emptying the tank. Thank you for saving me time and money!!!
Thanks for the positive feedback Derek! Glad the video was helpful!
Outstanding video! Simple and straightforward. Not an extra word. Thanks!
Beautifully & perfectly explained, I would give 5 Stars on video and explanation
Love this video. Straight to the point and easy instructions. Will be doing this in a few days also. Just waiting on the gas valve to come in. Thanks
I agree, this is the best video depicting the valve replacement. I was unaware the valve-to tank connection goes through a water passage thus requiring to create an air lock as shown. Thank you so much!
OMG, look how fast he's doing it...I thought I was watching TikTok! I appreciate PROS DIY! I have "Liked & Subscribed" to their channel! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, advice and skills on RUclips. This was an EXCELLENT tutorial...I learned so much!
Looking forward to seeing more of your tutorials! 😀
This is a great vid. This is a real technician who knows what he is doing. I have watched several of these vid about troubleshoot the problems with these gas valves and many are totally wrong.
This guy is legit.
Thanks for the kind words my friend! Take care!
This video was a life and money saver. It took a minute because my little hands, but I got it done. Thank you 🙌
Straight to business! Thank you!
Every comment on here says what i was going to say. Absolutely spot on get str8 to it video! I followed the steps, bing bang boom 15 mins & i was done! My momma has hot water again! THANK YOU SIR!
This fixed my water heater. Thanks to this easy to follow video.
You're welcome. Nice job on your repair!
Very helpful, no doubt this guy is a professional
Thanks for posting this. I was going to try to change the valve without draining but I wasn't confident it would work without making a mess. Now I see it can be done.
Just wanted to take a second to say THANK YOU for this great video!! You saved me time and $ and no guess work!!
Thank you thank you thank you!! Just replaced my control valve and followed your steps, exactly and was able to get it done!
Oct 2022: Many commenters have beat me to it - RIGHT TO THE POINT - THANK YOU!!
Wow...I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS AMAZING HOW TO VIDEO. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS STRAIGHT FORWARD NOT COMPLICATED VIDEO!! 5 STARS! YOU SAVED ME AND MY WIFE ALOT OF MONEY. GOD BLESS!
Perfectly put!! Getting ready to this Gas Control Valve....
Very nice and very helpful for replacement of gas valve.
Very informative. Not to discount the skilled laborers that do this sort of thing for a living, but this is not rocket science. If you can turn a wrench you can do it. Which is why I was shocked when one company quoted me over $600 to install that exact same Honeywell valve. Crazy!
Very Helpful and thorough regarding replacement
Thank you for this video
I just replaced mine today.
Rheem is awesome I got the new parts for free under warranty. The Rheem water heater was replaced 2 years ago.
This video was SO helpful. Thank you. All the other videos rushed through and left out a bunch of stuff.
Thank you! Was quoted $650 to change the valve and recommended $2500+ to replace the water heater (it's 10yrs old). Was able to change the valve without any issues. My original valve was showing everything was fine and the light was blinking once every three seconds like normal, but there was no pilot or burner. Replace the valve and it started right up! Only paid about $150 for the replacement gas valve. Only difference was I had to drain the water heater completely.
Excellent video! This was the video that made me to summon the courage to do the job myself. Thank you for the great demonstration!
How did it turn out?
This video helped more than the 20-25 min videos I was watching straight to the point simple directions just good video in general
Thank you so much for this EXCELLENT video! I followed your step to a
“ T “ w/ out no problems. This video was direct and to the point w/ out any extra chatter. Thank you again, EXCELLENT VIDEO!!
Thank you so much! This was a perfect video on how to replace this gas controller valve. While I had to drain mine completely because I live in CA to replace the gas sediment valve this was spot on! Appreciate it as the water heater went out of warranty after 6 years a few months ago. I just replaced the Thermopile and GCV 2 years ago and it still cost me 200 in labor as they replaced parts only under warranty. Anyone should be able to follow this and be successful with a little skill.
Thanks Shawn!
Thanks! Great vid, clear and concise but without leaving out any little details that some people just assume everyone knows. I'm not a very handy person at all, but you saved me a couple hundred bucks. Showing how to use the threaded pipe to turn the gas valve was particularly helpful.
Awesome! Glad the video was helpful and saved you some money. Nice work!
You saved me a lot of money. The heater in the video was just like mine. Thank you for this video!
Outstanding! Covers all steps clearly in a record low elapsed time video.
Well done! Your gas valve replacement tutorial for water heaters was excellent. Bravo for the detailed walkthrough-it really helps tackle the task with confidence.
Thank you! Clear, consise, and thorough.
I am a little upset he didn't do a cool intro with music and then tell me about how his uncle once changed a water heater with a toothpick. Now that said this is how every how to should be done. Just the facts! Great video.
Awesome job and great video... just got mine changed out on all days Thanksgiving... i am Thankful to have Hot water again... and works perfectly... just on a side note if you don't have a piece of pipe to screw into the gas inlet valve (all stores were closed today) you can use a pair of rubber coated handle pliers or channel locks worked really well...
Great and very clear instructional video!
I rarely see a very well explain, step-by-step video online! And the best part of all is that there was no chit-chat! Just Straight to the Point!!
I NEVER comment on RUclips videos. But I had to on this one, Good Job buddy!
Thanks for the kind words Eric!
Awesome tricks and tips to go with top notch diagnostics. Tested thermopile, OK, then replaced valve with ebay refurbished. Simple with the tips and fired right up. Saved me $500 and 1/2 day labor. Most Excellent!!!!!
outstanding! first vid I've seen about the air lock - brilliant! Did your approach today and worked great! Thank you very much! Agree with comments below - straightforward advice. Highly appreciated!
Thanks for the very helpful video, I was able to change mine out today and everything is working perfectly now.
Fantastic video but please consider slowing down a little so that us mere mortals can better grasp what you are teaching. Thanks!
This video was awesome and save a lot of time not having to drain the water heater.
I followed it exactly and showed my wife I could repair our water heater at a minimum cost instead of replacing the whole thing. $200 total including parts and supplies vs 1500-2000 for a new one.
Excellent, great step by step instruction. Also appreciated that portions of the video were speeded up without losing any value. Good even commentary on process. Great example of "how to" make a How To video.
Thanks Jerry!
Thank you! Quick easy instruction.
Just replaced mine. Last time the control valve died, I had to wait 4 days for the the plumber and he charged me $400 to change it. I just did it for $150 and fixed it the same day.
Nice job on your repair!
The instructional video was so amazing I had to leave a comment. Thank you.
This guy was amazingly quick. Like wow
EASILY the BEST video for this repair. thanks!!!
Thanks guy's you save me a lot money I thinking I need replace all the water heather
Very concise and easy to follow.
A very good no nonsense how-to video that included ALL necessary steps. Subscribing now! Thank you.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video, you're definitely a professional!
Thanks very much. Just finished. No issues and it went much easier than I expected. Took an hour to empty 50 gallon tank and pipes. Lighting pilot took a few minutes.
Nice job on your repair Dave! Cheers!
Amazing video it’s nice to see the level of experience you are working, keep up the good job thanks for posting
This is the video I'll use to replace my thermocouple. Thanks guys ! Well done 👏👏
Yeah, really appreciated the straight forward and cutting to the chase aspects of this video! Job well done!
Thank you for the absolute best how to video on the internet
Thank you!
Very helpful, thank you! The small pipe section that connected to the controller unit was glued on tight. I ended up having the replace it because I could not get it off. Recommend to others to consider buying a few extra pieces of 1/2" pipe to have on hand while you're at the store already buying pipe dope.
Fantastic! That was perfect.
Well done sir! Helped tremendously!
thanks for this step by step, helped immensly.
