I think the many smaller covens are just subsections of the big 9. For example the small cat coven is just a part of beast keeping. Maybe teen witches don't go to the convention to find out their main coven but to find out their specific coven. Maybe you CAN join a really specific coven and seal away your magic if you want to, but most witches choose not.(ex: all small cat coveners are in beast keeping, but not all actually signed their magic over) And perhaps Belos knows that he can't enforce specific coven joining without resistance, so he just sticks to 9 big ones.
Maybe you can freely switch in those subcovens so people believe they have more freedom than they have which allows him to keep everyone in check.

This makes a lot of sense. A subcoven might be more appealing to a young witch since it could feel more like club than a big commitment. Being a part of a subcoven might get a witch more comfortable choosing a main coven later on.

But the Owl House doesn’t refute the different branches of magic. Just the coven system.
Like not everyone goes full wild witch after the system is abolished. Willow is still a plant specialist for example. Even students who multi-major still don’t study all magic with the exception of a few like Luz.
So I still think there’s plenty about the Magic system presented in Owl House that’s fair to criticize that isn’t covered by “Well the bad guy made it up.”
Personally, I think the coven systems also creates prejudice towards other magic. For example, Illusion magic is often regarded as just fancy tricks, but greater ones can create powerful illusions. Or healing just being used to heal wounds and such.
I low key hope the illusion head is the most powerful head since he could maybe break the line between what is real or an illusion to allow him to bend reality.

I'm pretty sure that most of these flaws are on purpose. Like, the coven system is meant to be shitty and flawed... and the other 3 milion subcovens are just that, subcovens. You do a main coven and then you can join whatever subcoven, like a masters degree after a graduate degree or smth. Aka: main coven: oracle, specialization: fortune telling coven.

That's a very real possibility but also it could be that all other covens besides the 9 main simply fall under control of one of the main 9 like off shoots or branch covens.
I bet that when Belos came to power and proposed the coven system he probably already had the 9 coven heads as allies that gave support during the war and used them as examples as what u can achieve when you focus all your training and effort on one track I mean Darius is dam good example of what a master Abomination witch can achieve.
The coven system is likely a ruse for Belos to collect enough magic to merge the realms and maybe have another Ford situation where it’s used to create a rift to another realm where Belos’ brother is.

@@peachesplums There was Coven heads before him and Raine probably. Raine was recently placed in charge, since in S1 we see a banner with the Bard Coven head and he's a man with horns. It's possible Terra was one of the first Coven heads given her age.

Ok about potions: there are cookbooks in reality too, but some people still choose to become professional chefs? Not to mention, potions are multipurpose. You can basically do any kind of magic with them, as long as you're skilled enough. It's no surprise Eda and Lilith were in this track at school.
The Fortune Tellers Coven is probably a branch of the Oracle Coven. Not all Oracles are fortune tellers - take Odalia for example!
I believe potion is basically rare since you only mix stuff to make something, all though you need the knowledge of course cuz is like chemical class and that is a pain in the butt. After all witches seem to need magic to join in wich is stupid and what you say makes sense. (I remember when Eda lost her magic they say we don't need a powerless witch with no magic so is pretty stupid)

I find it weird no one in the Oracle Coven saw Philip's/Belos' real goal coming. The Coven heads believed a paradise awaited the Isles and Odalia expected him to make the family nobles. Both are a lie. But this makes me wonder, what Odalia expected to rule over?
@@RAINBOWNIGTHMAREPRODUCTIONS I guess Odalia was really blind for that "position" she didn't think clearly (never actually) but in the case of the oracle they were really oblivious even head witch (part of the plot ofc but that was terrible)
Oracle is supposedly a very handy and mysterious coven, from what we have seen so far (and if you have read the wiki) it’s obvious that its for fortune telling, but also from the latest season it was used for combat as well releasing spirits and what it looks like dark magic (or probably came from some spirit world but I’m still not entirely sure)
Very nicely done and my thoughts exactly though that does make me wonder what did Odalia spec her Oricale training into if not seeing into the future? Telepathy, summoning spirits for combat or other mind and soul magic applications.
As someone interested in animals, I would be content to join the Beast Keeping Coven. But people who have multiple interests would fail to choose just one, and wouldn’t want to be forced into one. Wild witches are those who don’t want to choose just one.

Tbh I see the 100 of covens as like “clubs” where I see the main ones as maybe what you educate yourself to, which is how it makes sense to me. :)
Like fx the flower coven kinda falls under plants, don’t ask me about the baker ones or so, cus I can’t say what the goes under, maybe potions? (So potions are like an ingredient)
Of all the Covens, only four have captured my interests; the primary one being Bard. As a D&D nerd, I've often heard people describe Bards as one of the most powerful character classes in existence. This is because through their musical/performance talents, they could bend ANYONE to their will; even something as huge as a dragon.
Now, I'm not really a musician and my singing skills are...average to say the least. But I have strong acting, writing and storytelling abilities; which (I think) are part of a bard's skills...but I digress. My main point is I would pick Bard as my first coven track.
The other three choices I have for a secondary track (thus making me a "mixed magic witch") are Healing, Illusions or Beast-Keeping. Each one of these, I believe would work off well with Bard magic and here are my explanations why.
By mixing Bard with Healing, I could (quite literally) heal the sick and wounded with the power of music or singing.
By mixing Bard with Illusions, I could be my own one-man show; complete with special effects.
Lastly, by using Bard magic mixed with Beast-Keeping; I could bring new meaning to the quote "music has charm to soothe the savage beast." In other words, by befriending all creatures of nature (both natural and supernatural) with my bardic skills; I could command every beast around me to do what I wish. Remember Gwen Clawthorne's "every beast in the forest will be after your head" threat she made to Wartlop...THAT is what I would do

Strong acting and story telling may work better for illusionist because they have to be creative and stuff. If I had to choose a track I would pick orical, just because it seems the most interesting, we don’t have much info on it but from what I know, you can Do stuff like- spy on people, talk to ghosts, see the future, make curses(think like the spell amity did on luz preventing her from doing magic), and more. I also think orical and illusionist would work great together, allowing you to disappear and troll people
My main problem is how we barely see some of the other covens we have 3 members of the name cast be associated with one but none for the other tracks. It makes the school setting seem pointless as it looked like that’s where most of the info could have came from with Luz taking every class. Also I agree potion needs a better rep.
Plus, what the hell does the Bard track do? I watched Eda's Requiem and I got the answer of 'Practically Anything.' If it weren't for the fact that I have no musical skills I'd maybe join. The Potions track probably has some advanced powers like transmutation or the ability to manipulate chemical/physical properties but normally mixing potions is just the easiest way to do it. I mean Boscha's fire spell could be a form of potion magic if she made the balls super flammable, or found a way to create fire as a reaction.
I find the coven system a great idea for witches, the only thing i disagree with it is limiting witches to only that. Hexside should've been a place to figure out and try all other coven subjects so they can have a feel for it before 'graduating' to commit to one coven to "major" in. It'll be good for a construction coven studennt to learn healing since they can get injured from their craft or for any witch to learn because it feels like something practical for everyday use to care for yourself and others, kinda like home ec.
Perhaps potion coven is for people who are like underachievers. Considering they want all witches to join a coven, at some point they have to realize that not everyone is good at anything to be in a 'respectable' coven but can't stay being a wild witch or just do nothing. But with the right training, adaptable for any coven like Jack-of-all-trades. Potions to healers for medicine, researching the potions for good nutrients for plants, potions to calm and care for beasts, potions to assist oracles, and as seen with Eda, elixirs to keep curses at bay. etc.
I feel like the potions coven could be fixed if top potion members were treated like chemists rather than bakers. So where as most witches can make a lot of potions thru recipe books, these results could only produce half the effect of what potion witches could make

It'd honestly be cool to get to see some of the other coven heads in action to show what each coven can really do
I like the beast keeping coven because not only do you get to know about many beasts but you get to use said beast in magic ways
Actually, for the Steven universe magical mcguffins a lot of them are already pretty well used. Like the Moon Goddess Statue was used for the lunar sea spire which fleshed out the world of Steven universe, it is used later on to explain how much homeworld had developed on earth.

I mean you are playing that but you are correct. Of the pros and cons in this that would be a key reason for limiting magic types, this also forces people to have to rely on many others when it comes to situations where they are not coven members of. The other side is simply that shy and the ones with issues communicating would have the most difficulty with it.
In that case couldn’t you just use a potion coven sigil on them like when the bard head tried to on gus

I kind of got the feeling that the main nine covens were akin to like specific colleges at a university (ex. The college of liberal arts, college of arts and architecture, college of education) and the other ones were like the majors underneath those colleges. For example I’m in the college of Liberal arts because I’m an environmental studies major. So it’d be like someone being in the plant coven and also being a part of the flower coven
I think that only the main 9 covens can seal your magic, but the smaller covens are like school clubs, you can join a main and a small coven, since the small covens shown didn't need magic to function, maybe anyone can join a small coven, I can be a beast keeper and still bake
also I think advanced potion brewing needs magic, this explains why lulu and eda could make potions, lulu's spell was weak enough that you could see from both sides of the spell and eda's potions were pretty simple and weak, also a lot of people would join the potions coven to make potions faster and higher quality, it's an economical track useful for profit, merchants would major in it usually
The biggest plot hole that keeps the show from being flawless is them not explaining why they never capture Edda or Luzz even when they know we’re they live(I still enjoy the show it’s just something in the background)
Simple answer they don't need them If the show doesn't do something some people expecting specific doesn't mean it has flawed.

To be fair, I'm pretty sure she started doing criminal stuff because she got labeled a threat at a young age, and an outcast, similar to the people who were locked up in the conformatorium.
5:25 I don’t know if this was done on purpose or it was a coincidence, but that is the most well/terribly aged thing I’ve seen.
I think it’s interesting how these questions were mostly answered in the more recent episodes, with one of the emperors coven scouts, specifically one that worked under the illusion coven head, quit the emperors coven to join the tiny cat coven, which shows that you can in fact change covens, and that it’s implied that you can not only join a smaller coven than the one you were already in, but also go from the tiny cat coven to the emperors coven, since she said how she wanted to go *back* to the tiny cat coven. And the whole ‘potion coven being useless’ thing seems to have been also explained a bit, since the potion coven head made poisonous gas pour out of their mouth and stuff, even then, the whole coven system was made by belos and the collector to complete the draining spell. That one spell was the reason why belos made the covens, the specific covens that were made weren’t necessarily what they needed to be. It could’ve been any 9 powerful witches.

I think potions is a great track though. Because potions don’t really have a limit to what they can do, so you basically can make a potion that does whatever you Want ! You can basically make everything the other tracks do !
I think all the small covens are just subdivisions of the main 9 ones. The small cat and big dog could be annexes to the beastkeeping coven, the flower coven for the plant coven, the bakers coven for the potions (mabey idk for sure for them) and so on, that would explain why there are only 9 covenheads

I think the idea is that the main nine covens are what you're actually a part of and educate yourself on, and all the hundreds of others are just like little clubs people join based on interests.
i had originally thought that belos couldn’t have more than 9 covens due “dyed in 9 hues” thing but with the addition of the emperor’s coven there’s 10

i like that there are hundreds of smaller covens. It expands the world and it establishes a hierarchy. The emperor's coven is on top then the big 9 covens are under that and the rest even further down the command ladder

I think the small covens are just groups of wiches with the same intrests, and there's no magic being sealed away when you join one.

Beast Keeping Coven is my favorite. I love animals. A whole school where I can learn all about animals sounds awesome.
Considering after this vid Labyrinth Runners made reference to the "Tiny Cat Coven" I think much like others here in the comments that there are many subcovens and fit under the main 9.
How i think it works is it's required to join one of the main 9 but the smaller ones are more like specialties within a wider field. A witch can join the plant coven but then also join the flower coven because that's their specialty, like maybe they want to be a florist so they want to steady and work with flowers specifically. Since we only ever see the 9 sigils I don't think the smaller covens actually lock away any magic like they do, I think it's just something they join when they want to follow a specific career path.

The way I see it is the 9 covens are like your core subjects, while the others are like electives/optional subjects. So you can be on the Beastkeeping track, but also be a part of the Baking and Tiniest Cat covens.
The coven system has to be so flawed on purpose. It was built by a certain colonist turned witch hunter. He didn’t want to bring order to magic so much as restrict all witches he can until the day of unity and we all know what the intended outcome of that is.
So after giving it some thought, the potion coven is actually a really good coven to specialize in mainly because it doesn’t have a specialization. You point out the scrying potion in the video, but scrying seems like it belongs in oracle magic so why is there a potion for it. The elixirs that Eda (and now Lilith) take follow a similar logic since the healing coven was what the Clawthornes went to in order to deal with the curse first and when they couldn’t remove it, they recommended the elixirs, a potion, to keep it at bay. This is 2 separate occasions where a potion does the work of another coven and it’s not too far fetched to suggest more instances of this. I can see the Potion Coven making incense to calm various beasts, fertilizers for all kinds of plants, they might even make concrete for construction work. Sure members of the other covens may not need those potions since they can do it with a literal wave of their hand, but ask a plant witch to predict the future or an oracle witch to grow a garden and you get nothing. Potion witches just need the right materials and they can do a lot of different types of things. They are jacks of all trades, masters of none.
The thing about Philosophy is that it is all about thinking and questioning critically, which if you think about it, is absolutely crucial in any aspect of life. Even Math was something Philosophers used to do to better understand the world.

The coven system is awful
What's the point of the Healing Coven? Plants and Potions can be used to heal, why would there be a Healing Coven? I get that they probably heal magically ailments, but for all we know both the Plants and Potions Covens can do that too. I get that the Healing Coven probably does more than just heal (like how Raine, Darius and Ebberwulf demonstrated the full skill of their covens) but we really haven't seen much in way of their skill. Maybe Healers can empower and strengthen their allies, or send diseases and ailments to their enemies (plus magical illnesses are definitely gonna be nightmare fuel).
A way to improve the covens to have them rebranded as something similar to the schools of magic in Skyrim, but I suppose it's like this way due to Disney wanting it to be "family friendly" because I can see the abomination coven being a mirror to necromancy but I do think the potion and oracle covens should have just been called the alchemy and astrology covens instead.
well, this aged poorly... turns out the reason that belos focused on the 9 covens and promoted them but allowed the rest was because he wanted to kill everyone so all he wanted was to handicap everyone and make it difficult for them to fight back

Personally I like the coven system, it’s an interesting idea. If belos was overthrown, this system can be changed for the better. If you asked me which coven I would join, I’d say the abomination coven. It’s the most versatile out of all of the versatile ones.
But the thing is, you can still specialize in abomination magic without it being the only magic you can cast, its not like restricting your other magic enhances your main magic its just a deficit. So like, unless the covens only exist in name only they'll always be worse than the alternative imo.

I also don't think the focus on the coven fair are about students. Like the fair is open to all and I think they just need more bodies for belos plan. So the goal is to get more people in covens. I don't think you need to go to school in order to learn magic but, they might make that a law to prevent it.

I'm glad Owl House Seasons 2-3 covered how the coven system is purposely flawed because Belos doesn't want to control powerful witches, so he limits their potential.
Gwen is older than the coven system. It had only been in place for about 20 years by the time Eda dropped out of high school, so there was still a lot of criticism of it. Gwen said herself that she didn't join a coven until she believed she had to in order to help her daughter.
The niche covens are all within the nine coven system. The tiny cat coven (of which Severine is a member) is likely part of the beastkeeping coven. The flower coven would obviously be a specialized coven within the plant coven.
We don't even know how the Day of Unity is gonna effect the Secondary Covens mentioned in Covention
Anyone in one of the smaller covens likely has to have a sigil for one of the main nine or the Emperor's Coven.
I always thought of the potions track as like studying chemistry or pharmacy. Like, not only do you learn to make specific potions, but you learn the specific processes and methods of potion brewing and what is going on with the materials you use to brew potions. Like how anyone can make pretty much any chemical product with the right instructions and materials in real life even with no previous chemistry knowledge, but a chemist understands the things that go into the making of those products more deeply. And also that knowledge means they can make new potions or innovate in potion brewing/make existing potions better

I'm sorry but the flawed coven system is the entire point. Going only one coven is the way of Belos controlling the wild magic and the points you're making makes sense in the writing.

I like to think that the potion coven has access to Fire and Water magic because we see young eda making fire 🔥 and bump says when he put luz in the potion coven says you have liquids in you right
Maybe the smaller covens are subbranches of the original nine. Then it would be using your coven track to choose a specialty.
eg. All members in the baker's coven use potion magic. The magic is sealed with a potion glyph, but they use their magic to make food... Kind of how you can study "healthcare" but there are specialties in healthcare (emergency medicine, psychiatry, cardiology etc.)
TBH on a world building stand point, the shows is messy and makes belos' coven system make sense, since it'll instigate order and balance.
I think one way of viewing the convention and the smaller covens is maybe they need to have a certain number of members before they become "official" and the convention is their time to do that...but obviously most people are still going to go to the big 9 so the smaller groups never are able to get quite enough (assuming it's a large enough number compared to the number of students and taking into consideration fluctuating class numbers as eldest graduate and newest start). So by the time they get into school, those smaller covens might as well not exist to most people as they are focused on their one track (and likely many people who pledge to smaller covens end up in one of the bigger ones by the time they hit the age to lock in).
I like to think of the covens as analogous of the gender binary.
A colonizer came in and enforced rigid restrictions on peoples’ expression, so now they divide into specific groups, despite it being unnatural.
Even after everyone’s allowed to study any kind of magic they want, only a few people actually branch out and study new things (they’re nonbinary-coded).
Amity, Gus, and Willow all stick to their respective tracks, because they’re comfortable within the system as it is, even if it was made up (they’re binary coded). Willow was originally placed in Abominations, but actually enjoys Plants (she’s binary transgender coded).
Luz, who studies all official tracks, would be bigender coded, and Gus and Amity would be cis coded.
Anyone who’s in a coven outside of the 9 would also be nonbinary coded, as they exist outside of the binary.
Maybe if your in a coven that isent potions the sigal shocks you or something if you try to make a potion

Beast Keeping sounds pretty cool, being able to summons animals to help you I. Fights or everyday stuff… Also as a Human from Earth you could be able to summon Earth’s animals, past or present.

I kept expecting them to show off a potion that requires magic to craft, but they never did. It really is a waste of a sigil.

I'd imagine that like all the tracks we've seen, there are varying levels, with high level potions being incredibly complicated to make, but able to do some crazy shit! You know, like how baking soda and vinegar are basic chemistry, but explosives and plastics are the result of much more study and experimentation. Potions. Also, Bosha was probably deemed suitable company for Amity more on her parents' income than anything else.
I've often pondered what track lets you learn how to sling spells, as that kind of magic doesn't seem to line up with what any track is about. Assuming it's not lost to all coven members outside the Emperor's coven, maybe mastery of the potions track is the one, or it lets you use a spell circle to cast a prepared potion.
Gwen is still in the beast keeping coven, she never left. She just sought out experts from other covens. And those such as "Wartlop."
I'd assume the convention's purpose for the major 9 is to 1 keep up an illusion of choice and freedom, 2 reaffirm tracks for student to make sure they stay within the system, and 3 to maybe poach from other covens for raw numbers to have a higher standing.
The latest episode mentioned one of the unimportant tiny covens, so that's not just early installment weirdness we've all quietly agreed to forget. They would have to be sub covens or required to limit their members to a magic track when they do the paperwork to start.
It’s nine main covens, but there’s probably a lot of fringe coven specialties (I theorize that there’s a textile coven for example)

Potion making seems like the epitome of jack of all traits and master of none kind of magic in almost any magical world. So it seems pretty boring and undetwhelming most of the time. But we need to remember the full quote. "A jack of all traits is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one." Minus the fact that potion making might require time due to gathering ingredients and brewing it properly, a master potion maker is possibly one of the most versatile magic user you could have on your side.
i believe there only 10 MAIN covens( counting the emperor coven, but that is special to join) the rest are side or minor covens, you have to join one of the main covens, the rest is all up to you
I feel like someone else probably talked about this or commented on it, but if you can only be in 1 coven ( unless it's the emperor's coven), then why were the detached kids all to learn 2 covens. Lus gets to be in them all also (I'm guessing they know basic magic like levitating and flying, etc., like math and science, and their homeroom teaches them their coven magic). I wish they had an honers class (which would be the empires coven class thing) like willow saying, "ugh, amity thinks she's so great just because she's in the honors class." She's becoming the new head witch for abominations [also going back to taking more than one track if NO ONE knows how to do old witch magic, aka drawing gliffs. HOW IS LUS LEARNING MAGIC??? I mean ya, she now knows what she has to do, but now she has to learn how to turn the elemental gliffs into illusions and abominations. How does she do basic magic? is she failing in almost every subject??]
Also, side note, I think gwdlen wasn't in a coven period and just did basic magic only but then joined the beast keeping coven because of edas cures (but then would that mean she's a wild witch? I mean 1, what if I don't want to learn magic period 2. would you be a wild witch if you don't join a coven and do any coven magic? or you're a wild witch if you don't enter a coven period )
also, the male version of a witch is a warlock
and female version of a wizard is Wizardess and sorceress (also witches most of the time)
My theory is that if anyone asked Bump, he would say multi-tracking promoted future members of the Emperor's Coven (even though the Emperor's Coven has no appeal to the multitrack students like Jerbo)
Regarding Luz at Hexside, she is incredibly skilled with the use of glyphs even before she started combining them into arrays, and external magic like potions and a lot of oracle magic are still available for her to use, as is learning the principles behind the different specializations (which would be the bulk of her lessons in her first semester at Hexside).
The umbrella idea for the 9 Main Covens and the loads of smaller covens is a really easy fix, but I think the Potions Coven should've been the Crafting Coven instead. Think about it: A Coven specializing in creating magical items that even low level witches can join. They could even make a Palisman Carving Coven underneath that with Dell Clawthorn as a member, which would tie into Eda and Lilith being part of that track back in Hexside.

Something that always got to me was that there wasn't any benefit to the covens. Like you sealed away and then what? Do become stronger in that one type of magic? If so, they never say so.
You don't get hunted down for being a wild witch, for one. Also something, something "Pure, as the Titan intended it." Propaganda is a powerful tool, especially after such a long time. Belos has been Emperor for 50 years, and has been setting the stage for long before _that._ This is the norm for people now. Belos has controlled the narrative.

And why would anyone care about Wild Witches? Wild Witches are literally just people not in a covan. Therefore, literally everyone was a wild witch before Belos. And what did that cause? Sure, he faked an attack, but what did that prove and how did the coven system solve that? I mean, a direct reading of the text is "Wild witches, which is literally you, are attacking. So you must make yourself objectively weaker to defend yourself from them. Them being you because wild witches are witches who aren't in the coven system i literally just invented, which again makes you objectively weaker." Seriously, it doesn't make no sense. There are literally no down side to wild magic and no up side to coven magic. Propaganda can only do so much. I mean, all they had to do was establish that coven make your specialized magic stronger and boom! Problem solved. I mean "share your magic with others"? That's literally the set up for the draining spell.

I think the covens in the convention are minor "clubs" you could join to have fun or to improve your magic in certain areas
I get it, like their are other covens too, like the baking coven. I think some of these coven are more like clubs but, Belos has a specific plan and needs the magic of all the main 9 covens later. So because of that the coven system has been force on students. So my question is are students at Glandus force under the coven system or are they more free to choose?
As we see in Them's the Breaks, Kid, all the magical schools are beholden to the track and coven system, and Through the Looking Glass Ruins shows that Glandus has a seriously toxic school culture (no wonder Bump burned the campus down and had Hexside built on top of the ashes).
(and going by the uniforms seen in Them's the Breaks, Kid, there's a fourth, unnamed school, whose students wear fur trimming on their tunics)
I wouldn't mind joining a minor coven (like Bakers), but I don't think I'd mind being in one of the main covens (well, maybe not construction because of a certain rat that really ends up insulting it).

I seriously question the usefulness of the potions coven. Like, potions are highly useful, but like... imagine not being able to do anything because all your powers are locked away so you're only skill is basic powers and being trained in soup. Like, I don't see the effective use of that track, unless it's like the gateway course for the Emperor's Coven, like a best of all tracks class for witches to plan to join the big coven
A lot of the more utility spells like telekinesis and object teleportation seem to transcend coven limits, and episodes like Separate Tides and Reaching Out show that a lot of the difficulty in making potions is in acquiring the ingredients.
I assumed that there are 9 covers qnd then hundreds of lesser covers that you don't need stamped for and just choose too
That thing about the potion track makes no sense 😅 like yeah "anyone can cook" but there are still people who major in making food and some foods are harder to cook than others

I've been saying for a while that it makes no logical sense that students were not always allowed to study multiple tracks. If they couldn't, how are they supposed to know which one they should join later on? What if someone graduates from the potion track only to decide they want to join the Beast-Keeping Coven? Honestly, their whole school system makes little to no rational sense.
That's the point. The Coven System was never designed to work in the long term as a framework for society.
I don't think it particularly matters as long as you join a coven period. Belos probably doesn't care as long as they have a sigil for SOMETHING. Besides all the smaller covens are just offspring of the larger 9. It's probably the same sigil, but you are participating in a different group.
Also, yes I agree Potions is just like cooking. But what you fail to realize is not everyone is a master chef. I certainly can't make a wedding cake, my hands were made for sticking frozen chicken nuggets in the oven, the same would apply to potions. There are cookbooks galore out in the world, but do you see everyone and their mother trying to rival Gordon Ramsey? Potions seems more like a basic skill you can pick up to make small remedies from time to time, but unless you pick that as your coven that's all you're gonna be able to do.
People are too scared to complain about the system, thus look happy.
The worst coven i will not choose / pick is potion because it's stupid and easy even toddler can do it
one problem i have is that we don't really get a sense of what they can do.
for example look at the ice that poked belos eye or the light eda and Lilith throw at each other.
wich coven lets you do stuff like that or are there maybe some spells that all 9 can use.
