I sailed in Denmark on a 30' Wharram, and later, on a 40 somefoot one. Now, I'm a dedicated monohull guy, but, ya know what, those things are pretty darned good. and, ANY boat is WAY better than no boat!
I live on and sail a Wharram Tiki 38. A fast fun easy boat to sail with a small crew, easily reached 11 knots in moderate winds. Definitely not a "condomaran" but far less expensive and easier to maintain. Mine has crossed the Atlantic in some adverse weather. It just takes a different skill set from a monohull.
Have to had any experience on a Tiki 30 or another smaller Wharram? The 38s look like amazing boats, and very seaworthy, but I would be concerned that actually sailing and maintaining it would be much harder than the 30, particularly with a crew of 1-2.
Good choice. Wharram’s are wonderful boats. Pay no attention when some people inevitably say “tying your boat together doesn’t look safe.” A couple of years ago my Tiki 21 got battered by a super typhoon. It trashed the beams, but the lashings held up perfectly. So did the hulls! I’m looking forward to following the construction via RUclips. Cheers
James Wharram's wife used to lecture about the benefits of polygamy in cruising lifestyle at yacht clubs. She said that James Wharram "Couldn't be Single-Handed by any one woman alone." She also said that she only had to cook or clean one day out of every five. When there were 5 wives on board. All of his wives were also full share owner's in his company. Three of them divorced him on the same day.
Just found you guys a couple of weeks ago and subscribed. My wife said it's because you cuss like sailors, true enough in part. My response was that it will hold them down bc of YT policy. There's no middle ground, the bleeping is annoying and hypocritical. You guys are charming, intelligent, clever, inventive and have the experience to attract a huge following without the cussing or the bleeping if that is what you want. All the best, Dennis
Love it! Also, I agree about the bleeping being annoying and I thought about it last night, I think it would be better just to mute the word. That way it would just be a silent bit of audio 😁 might be easier on the ears
Let I mention you kids are great and the videos I like alot they are seperate from the other boat building channels i watch and the adult content is great
Records show Wharram cats don't flip. Their was one tangaroa that flipped in new zealand and that was due to the captain trying to see how fast he could get it going. He was in a bay and caught a 60 knt wind that flipped it. Lots of reports of wharrams getting caught in BAD conditions and everyone survived.
My dad's best friend Bert Walker built his version of a Hobie 14 Catermaran using 1/8th mahogany plywood and covering the seams with fiberglass. The boat was super light and a blast to sail on the Salton Sea and Lake Tahoe :)
@@lordhriley In a Tiki 21, you only have room within each hull to lie down. Two shorter folks might be able to fit in each hull together, but it's definitely cozy, not roomy.
Sometimes it's good to shake things up and experiment with your channel every now and then. I've been experimenting with my Downeast Thunder Creations and Shoestring Shipyard channels and I keep learning new things. It helps to solicit feedback from viewers too, but that's usually the toughest part. A lot of people will watch the videos but are somehow reluctant to interact and offer their opinions (except for the trolls). Too bad I won't be seeing you up here in Maine this year - there are actually a few ports that don't freeze over but it does get pretty damned cold during the winter so it's just as well you decided not to spend the winter season up this way. Keep up the good work!👍👍👍
Yeah, it’s a bummer that often times we only hear from the people who have a beef with us. Do you find that on your channels too? What did you think of the concept?
@@SailingwiththeLitzenbergers I think you're on the right track. I enjoyed your video today but having said that, I've also enjoyed watching your previous videos as well. With respect to trolls and other "know-it-alls:" I've discovered they are the worst (and most plentiful) on Facebook in the various groups. I don't think they have been quite as bad on RUclips, but I've noticed a recent increase in Troll activity. There always seems to be one in particular that just loves to spam my channel. I refer to such beings as "my personal troll." Everyone should have one. You have not made it on social media until you have your own personal troll - that's how you know you've been noticed out there. The only problem with "personal trolls" is they are highly unreliable and sometime quit unexpectedly without giving proper notice so you have time to solicit another personal troll. Ah well......that's the way it goes with social media..........
WTF!!!! I just listened to the podcast and there was talk about writing an article (and potentially making $$$) about the catamaran rudder drop?!!?! Seriously?? I want 50% of the commission for any word that is written about that experience. Well, shit how about 20%. Ok, ok, ok you drive a hard bargain, please send me the link or point me to the article when its published. Love it! Love the video of the boat building experience. I'm watching this a little late, but I really enjoyed the format. It was fun to see the outtakes and I laughed out loud. I am going to Maryland to visit my boat and husband next Sunday for 10 days!. We too abandoned Maine plans and I am working while he takes care of the boat.Hoping next season!!
Mono hulls have a problem too they require a lot of ballast to keep them upright so if for ANY reason they take on water they are gonna sink all the way to the bottom where ever that may be so if you hit something that cracks the hull or a rouge wave comes along and over washes the boat ....you are going down and fast there have been books written about that also either way there is a risk but life is full of risk you could get mowed down crossing the street
