Thank you so much for this. My favourite sailing video. At 75, I have finally had to give up sailing after a lifetime. My favourite yacht was the Wharram Pahi 31, ‘Imagine’ which I owned here in New Zealand, back in the 90s. I had always sailed monohulls until that boat. Her ability at sea always impressed me and I would choose a Wharram over any other for serious ocean cruising anywhere in latitudes lower than 40°. Beyond 40°, I would be looking for rather more shelter on deck than his designs generally afford. We hit 15 knots regularly, but I don’t remember getting 17. I do remember us storming past a 40ft harbour racer, on a reach one day, and the look on his face as we did so. Happy days.
Hi! I am the current owner of that pahi 31 (now renamed "yes let's") since nov 99 she sat on the hard on the side of the road in Kawhia, then I restored her starting in 2019, relaunched just under a year ago! Would love to hear more history about what happened when you owned her.
What a beautiful story, 1 mans dream fulfilled with the support of friends and family around him. What was it, 6 years from start to finish. True story of perseverance and consistency. This film has touched me deeply. Beautifully done.

Thanks for all the messages! We have been sailing with the pilgrim for the past month. So i havn't been able to reply to any of your comments since we have no internet. We did Sete, Mallorca, Menorca, Crosica. We captured the new speed record of 18.9 knots on video and I have a bunch of awesome Drone footage and more. We are leaving toward Greece in 10 days for another month or 2. I will eventually be posting a lot more videos as soon as i find time to edit and post. Thank you for watching, stay tuned for loads of Pilgrim videos coming soon..ish.. Fair winds everyone!
Those Wharram cats are tough. I think the simplicity of design has a lot to do with that. And what a fantastic journey. The memories you all have a priceless. Congratulations to everyone involved. And thanks for sharing this!!
This is a great story, very inspiring. Somebody working so hard for their dreams instead of living life like it's a vending machine. It says a lot about what kind of man your dad is as well, that he has family and friends who gave up a lot to help and experience the journey. So many metaphors-- the journey home to France; the name Pilgrim; the brilliant simplicity of the boat., the occasional storms and disappointments (like life).... Also; production values, music and narration are par excellence. Thanks for making and posting this. Really awesome. I had my family watch it together.
Such an uplifting video. Tribute to James Wharram RIP. And to the many people he inspired, like these guys to follow their dream. What an awesome boat. Well done. It slices like a hot knife through butter.
Absolutely great! Loved watching the dream unfold, the adventure, the camaraderie and the beautiful 'speed finish' giving it everything you had on that final beam reach. Perfect ending. Inspiring. Well done Pilgrims!
What a great video, but an even more AWESOME Boat & Crew! I’m still amazed , I fell asleep watching “Wildings Sailing” where Mark Wilding is refurbishing a Wharram and woke up to this for a early Christmas present!! This is to me, Perfection!! ❤️ (Even after six years!)
One of the best sailing videos I have ever seen (and I watch a lot of them!) Beside the fact that the boat is just wonderfull, the camera work also is. This is a story of strong will and says a lot about what kind of man your father is. I am deply touched by this movie...
Once I started watching I could not stop. What a thrilling video. You all should be very proud and now to have the Most courageous voyage under your belts. I am sure there were some tough issues between the crew and the weather and just about a million other things, but you persevered and MADE IT. What a great boat. I was nervous for you at first, as others have said, but the design and craftsmanship stood the test of the Atlantic.
This is a brilliant film. It is so hard to display the strength of the wind and how big the seas are from deck height. Love the speed. I was so lucky to have had the privilege to sail on George Paynes Raka, the first Wharram racing design in 1974. My little trip was in the company of the PCAs secretary Tony Meakin and the Editor Richard Bumpus. It was a delivery trip for George taking Raka from Plymouth to Padstow round Lands End. After taking it easy to Lands End, we wound it up and managed to average 16 knots for the last 4 hours to Padstow. Raka was much heavier than the newer designs so we knew we had a lot of safety margin. But we we very quick on the sheets just in case. But to be able to film as well as you have done - terrific !
You know - it really is - when you parse through all the junk - this one deserves recognition, applause, even a prize. I wonder if there is a venue for that? Or it always based on 'views' - which of course means only the worst video's win.
thank you so much for posting this. Im 21 years old in the US, and this video has thoroughly inspired me to become a sailor and maybe cross the atlantic as you have done. Thank you for being an inspiration. Much love
This is probably the first video I have ever watched start to finish. I was on a cruiser and an aircraft carrier in the Navy as a young man. I miss the ocean so much it hurts sometimes. Thank you for the journey, it was wonderful.
GRATITUDE FOR YOUR GRIT, DETERMINATION, BRAVERY, CHARACTERS, TEAM, AND BOAT! Sail her all over the Med and Europe now, more movies, a book, share your feelings and thoughts with the world. Inspire other adventurers. Excellent video production. Thank you all for sharing. Jim in Philadelphia

Happy belated and well deserving congratulations! This was a very enjoyable accomplishment to watch. What you all have done is inspiring. From the bottom of my heart, Thanks for sharing this. God bless you all!
Bu ta ful… thank you for sharing such a personal experience, wish I was with you all then, what more can one ask, a dream come true that nothing can ever take away, not even time…well done…
Great. Good filming and editing. Good stills and subjects. Great use of music that was not over powering or intrusive. Fantastic commentary. Great story telling. A good feeling of "being there" with you. Thank you all and very, very, well done.
You had me in tears from time to time. This definitely stokes a chord with my soul. Thank you so much for making this, you are a good narrator and story teller.
I have been sitting in the gloom of the grey wilderness of Alaska and this was so wonderful and inspirational. I was there with you. A dream I have always had too...to sail across the atlantic and enjoy the water but here I am in the wilderness...watching 2 small baby moose....A sail would be beautiful..Need a great cook???
Iv watched this twice now I remember watching it ages ago but it's that good. Thank you for sharing this great truly inspiring story. What a great boat you built together. If I'm ever I'm ever sailing there I'm going to look your dad and his boat up if OK? And buy him and you & any of this crew a drink
Thank you for this. My father built a Tiki 26 with which we sailed in Holland, the channel, Englamd and had it for 3 years on a buoy in St Georges de Didonne near Royan. We had wonderful times with it. Our topspeed surfing was 16.4 knots, so that corresponds quite well with yours. Thank again & happy sailings.
EXCELLENT VIDEO! I like that they put decking slats in where the trampolines normally reside. I hate trampolines. I also got a kick out of the head. Just goes to prove that all one needs is a solid boat and good seamanship to cross oceans. The nonessential comforts are just a distraction.
Une vraiment très très belle vidéo racontant une histoire et une réalisation dont on rêve et que seuls quelques heureux hommes parviennent à réaliser. Bravo et Merci

Hi, how long can a wooden or plywood boat made with fiberglass like Pilgrim last?
This is the longest time I have ever spent watching a RUclips video... BECAUSE IT WAS THAT GOOD!
I can't believe i've been watching for 40 minutes, no boring moments at all
My longest watch too
It was real. That's why you couldn't stop.
It is.
Same here!
Alexis, hello, what a great docu. INDIGO must have seemed like child's play after this!
Hey Sterling, nice to hear from you, thanks for the comment. Indeed Indigo is in another league. All the best!
