I traveled to Iraq as a tourist. In episode 1 of my new series I fly into Baghdad and hit the streets and markets to get a feel for the city. In this video I try some delicious Iraqi food, hit some famous (and infamous) historical sites, and give you my first impressions of the country. Tune in next Wednesday when I'll be heading to a football match between Iraq and UAE.

My first deployment was to Baghdad in 2005. Despite the low level insurgency still going on at the time (which would fluctuate up and down), I objectively enjoyed my time there working with the Iraqi people on the ground and getting to know a little of their culture, language and food. I remember being on the banks of the Euphrates and awestruck at how many civilizations came and went in that spot alone. I often said I wouldn't mind coming back in the future and be able to walk down the street as a just a civilian guest without my rifle and body armor.

It really is kinda weird sometimes how funny and lighthearted this content can seem, that you have to take a second to step back and really appreciate the fact that these people are so marginalized in the international scope of things.... So to have someone shine a light on their culture and expose people to what life is really like there vs what you've been told in the news... That's really awesome! This is human history being told as accurately as it's ever been told, I can't thank you enough for making this content! Drilling 07:10 in the morning is slacking, you start work at 07:00.
Also i worked in a cellar at some apartment building and about 09:00 some dude came down and asked us to stop because he was sleeping and he has an appointment later that he needs to be rested for. We just kinda looked at him and laughed and continued our work.

I love donnie. He shows no bias on the country, and goes there open minded, even if it is called iraq. Best american tourist by a million mile mark.

No offense to the guy you talked to about traveling to Iraq.. His content is a little too straight laced for me. How he has as many subs as he does is baffling. A great start to a much anticipated series

Donny doing my homeland right. Great stuff. Was born there but sadly haven't been back in 30 years :(. The people are resilient like you said and friendly.

If I remember correctly, this city has held an important place during the Islamic Golden Age, being the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate in this same era, and was also the largest city in the world at some point. It's cool that you're visiting such an important place in history.
Also holy shit all that food looks delicious
