Doug, The Legacy is another epic from Maiden. The song is quite heavy, but also acoustic and very atmospheric, and the lyrics fit perfectly with today's global situation in the world.
I salute you sir for recommending The Legacy. If there was a "Love" button in RUclips I would have used it on your comment. A Criminally Underrated Maiden gem. All the best from Egypt.
i absolutely agree!! the legacy is a very deep and thought provoking song that definitely left an impact on everyone i know that heard it. can't go wrong with that
This is what makes Iron Maiden so damned good. They create melodies that people can sing too, like anthems. Fear of the Dark, Rime of the ancient mariner, the crowd just sings along, they don't even need prompting, they just do it. It's also not lost on me, that Steve Harris plays chords on his bass to fill the sound... HE'S A MASTER.
As a Maiden fan of almost 40 years it thrills me to death that you genuinely seem to appreciate them. I also really appreciate that you care enough to know the names of the band members and even some Maiden history. If I may be so bold I would like to request that your next Maiden Monday you do "When the Wild Wind Blows" which is from their "En Vivo" DVD. It is on RUclips. Thanks.
@@madmike4622 I really like TMWWBK. It has this great "flight of fancy" moment when the song just feels like it is soaring into the sky. Maybe you know the part I mean. It introduces the guitar solos.
Doug, love your videos, your passion and your overarching deep knowledge of music. But this song sounds like a dog taking a shit over a putrid cream meringue. Just dreadful on all levels. 😂
So glad you played this one Doug. A great closing song from my favourite reunion era Maiden record. Very underrated. So glad you picked the live version to for the crowd singing along and for Adrian's little guitar solo after the first chorus, as it isn't in the studio version. Thank you!
This years Maiden Maiden voyage Edit what a treat, this is such a unique song. In a way its similar to Writing on the wall and Empire of the Clouds in that they depart quite a bit from their lets say musical homebase. Something I find refreshing and also in that they are top notch songs (other than that they are quite different from each other)
got my tickets for the philly show this year. will be my 8th time seeing them. cant wait. this is another song that just speaks to you. i recommend when the wild wind blows from the final frontier. the live version of course from en vivo.
Agree with the person below recommending The Legacy from Maiden. Among the best in their catalog and certainly a great one to react to. A Harris/Gers song with exceptional lyrics that are sadly so on point in today's world.
This album is in my top 3 Maiden albums. Listen to it loads. I know I will hear it slightly differently next time, as a result of your wonderful breaking down of the mechanics of the music. Do yourself a favour this year Doug-go see Maiden play live if you can. It's an awesome experience 🤟
It may be acoustic, but there's nothing more metal than having your own creative vision and not letting anyone stop you from boldly pursuing it. Iron Maiden certainly have done that, from starting out at the height of punk's popularity and doing something radically different, to sticking to their creative guns for decades while subtly developing their sound along the way without ever losing their own unique and instantly recognizable voice.
The bridge to the chorus in that song is suspiciously similar to Uriah Heep's Sunrise. When Doug started this series, he said he'd probably never pay to see Iron Maiden live. Now he can't wait for an opportunity to go see them live. 🙂 Doug, you'd be the perfect guy to interview Steve Harris. Harris has said in the past "I don't know what is a scale", yet his music is a mix of both clichés and the most unusual stuff. Is it because he doesn't really know what he is doing? There's gotta be more to it than that!
By now he has some idea, but honestly Steve has never been much concerned with a scale in that like educated formally sense. The man has always been one who simply would try things, record himself, listen back and be like "I did or didn't like it" and try again. That's how it all started and would continue for most of their careers even to today. Now don't get me wrong some of them have a deeper like classical of fundamental music education than Steve does, however he isn't kidding when he says that.
I keep coming back to your maiden videos. This is so enjoyable, being a maiden fan since my teen years (now in my late 30s), your take on their music is spot on. I'd love to see them once more here in Argentina. If you get to see them live in this future past tour, please do a reaction video afterwards. Up the irons, Doug! 🤘
I remember you said in the beginning, after Hallowed be thy name, something like "Would I pay money to see this? Definitely not.". Now you say you have a chance to see them playing live. Definitely yes!
Saw this live in Dublin on this tour and the point depot went absolutely nuts for this. Please do "the legacy" next from "a matter of life and death" next!!?? Please do it... you'll love it! UP THE IRONS!!!!!
I didn't care for that album when I first listened to it. I preferred the Brave New World album. But I didn't give the Dance Of Death album enough time to grow on me. Then, as I watched live clips of the songs from the album, I got it. The songs really come alive when you have the energy of an enthusiastic crowd behind them. I reckon they had the idea of what the songs might sound like in front of a live audience in mind when they were working on Dance Of Death and subsequent albums.
Heyy, Doug! Greetings from Brazil! My friend and I have a game of our own which is finding songs that are similar to each other, for example: The Longest Day - Iron Maiden and Call Me Little Sunshine - Ghost; Caught In The Middle - Dio and Devil's Child - Judas Priest. And I spent half my life listening to Journeyman and never realized it sounded like Dust In The Wind. That blew my mind!
Doug: "...with this crowd just amped up." Bruce: "Journeyman." Crowd: absolute silence. Love it. Doug, thank you for your analysis. Cheers and Irons Up from the Netherlands.
maiden monday always good to have. try book of souls live chapter the red and the black. 1st tour after bruce was cured of the throat cancer he discovered while recording the album.. gers name is pronounced yannick. he was born in england like the rest. has the towel, he says he loses 3 or more liters of water a show.
Doug, ticket’s on me for the show in Newark this coming November. Only catch is that you’d have to be front & center in the pit with my best friend and I. You can consider me an Iron Maiden ‘historian.’ You would get the whole 9 yards of the best of an Iron Maiden experience. It’s one thing to listen to them and footage on RUclips, but witnessing them live up close in person is just on another level \m/
Happy New Year Doug. Thanks again for yet another Maiden Monday. Epic tune to review, Bruce and the boys never fail to deliver. Really hoping you get to see the guys at a gig this year, it will be one of the best decisions you make this year. 🤘🤘🎸🎼🎶🎤
if given the chance, deffinately go to a Maiden Concert, I was able to catch the first show of the 2019 Legacy of The beast tour and the last show of the 2022 Leg of the same tour " arguably the best shows of any tour." before I had a passing like for many of their songs, but because of the energy of their live performances Maiden has been elevated to my top 5 favorite bands.
Hey Doug hope you're good my man, I really love your reactions. My uncle is a great Pink Floyd lover being a guitarist himself and when I introduced him to maiden, he said that one day people will study those artists to see how talented they are and indeed this is happening. The first Maiden song I showed my uncle was Wasting Love from the album Fear Of The Dark, if you have some time just give it a listen, it's another hidden gem. Anyway be safe and keep up the epic reactions.
You'll love the show if you get a chance to go Doug. I've seen them 7 times starting in 1983 and the last show I saw was futurepast in Edmonton Alberta in September. Not a bad show in the bunch!
Although being such a huge Maiden's fan for decades, I shall admit it's not any song they release I like, and this is one of them. In fact, to be honest, in my opinion this album - "Dance of Death" - is one of the worst Maiden's albums! Even so, anyone can see their incredible musical skills in this video. I got quite good suggestions of Maiden's songs to react to: songs from the album "Somewhere in time", such a good one, way better than this, and songs which are part of the setlist of Maiden's current tour, the "Future Past World Tour". My favorite ones are: "Alexander the great" and "Somewhere in time". But Iron Maiden has been playing in this world tour some other good songs, as for example "Stranger in a strange land" and "The Prisoner". By the way, my congratulations for one more fine analysis! Up the irons! #uptheirons
One of my all time favorite maiden songs, just love the way they can come down and do songs like this. it is rumoured that Bruce left Maiden because he had more ideas like this. I loved it when they played it live, really surprised when they came out for the encore and played Journeyman.
This is one of my favourite softer songs from them. Love it if they play this live again. Also would really love to hear them play Proigal Son live. Would be epic.
Nice video Doug. I enjoy seeing you continue to discover Maiden. Just an fyi. If you haven’t yet check out the studio version as it has a marvelous string section.
Thank you so much for this one ❤ maybe Time machine oder Brighter than a thousand suns for next Maiden-Mondays. And maybe some day we will get a full album reaction on patreon...i vote for Somewhere in Time.
Random comment...i discovered TDD pretty near the start of his rock journey. And I'm so grateful i did. I've revisited maiden a lot since then... and also found some new stuff. Love the content. I think doug should do a classical piece now and again. Share what he loves! Thanks Dr H, appreciate it.
Another great vid, thanks @doug.helvering The quieter moments in a heavy concert are like the gentle bits of a rollercoaster... they let you appreciate the fast and exciting parts even more. Although I'm a *huge* Maiden fan, I would love to hear your take on some bands that are a bit more unpredictable... Nine Inch Nails, Primus, Marillion.
Never thought you'd review this!! Always thought this was my own personal maiden song, far away from the hits they've had, it's a brilliant song, such a great piece of music,... Well done doug!!!
Sometimes people overlook how subtle Maiden can be. Look at Empire of the Clouds. Paul D'iannio was a good singer but Bruce really connected with the fans. I think it is fair to say, from what I hear from various girlfriends, that Bruce connected with more female rock fans too. Of course we are allowed to be jealous 😂
Hey Doug, you should listen to Reach Out. It's an Iron Maiden song but really different to the all others because it's sung by the guitar player Adrian Smith and with Bruce Dickinson on backing vocals. I'm waiting for your react!
Agree that Reach Out is one that I'd love to hear Doug's opinion about. However, it's actually not a Maiden song, it was written by Dave Colwell and originally done by the supergroup known as The Entire Population Of Hackney. Born of Nicko McBrain's boredom after the World Slavery Tour ended, and featuring members of Iron Maiden, FM, and Urchin, they played two concerts in December 1985, one under that name, which was recorded and released as a bootleg album, and the other under the name of The Sherman Tankers. Members were: Adrian Smith - lead vocals (tracks 1-6, 8, 10 and 11), lead & rhythm guitars (tracks 1-15) Urchin, Iron Maiden and ASAP, Bruce Dickinson - lead vocals (tracks 13-15) Iron Maiden Andy Barnett - lead vocals (tracks 7 and 9),lead & rhythm guitars, backing vocals (tracks 1-6, 8, 10 and 11) Urchin, Marshall Fury, FM and ASAP Dave Colwell - lead & rhythm guitars, backing vocals (tracks 1-11) 720, FM and ASAP. Dave Murray - lead & rhythm guitars (tracks 12-15) Urchin and Iron Maiden Martin Connoly - bass (tracks 1-11) Marshall Fury Steve Harris - bass (tracks 12-15) Iron Maiden Nicko McBrain - drums (tracks 1-15) Iron Maiden
This is a song that has other versions that were released on singles, including a symphonic version, and an electric version. You should get into some of Bruce's solo material, especially songs from "Accident of Birth", "The Chemical Wedding", and "Tyranny of Souls". I could list individual song suggestions, but there are too many, any random pick would be great. Adrian Smith was with him on the first two. He has an upcoming new album in March called "The Mandrake Project" which has a music video out already. Ah hell with it, here are some of my favorites from those albums: Road to Hell Darkside of Aquarius Man of Sorrows Omega Arc of Space Book of Thel The Tower Jerusalem Kill Devil Hill Navigate the Seas of the Sun
Hi from germany. I love this album, because it is a f**king great concert location. Dortmund Westfalenhalle 1 In the 90th they let arround 15.000 peopoe in, today they let arround 12.000 people in. There where some "tight" accidents with thr first barricade line. No harmed people, but some breaks in the barricade. Sadly i was only one time in this hall. 2023 i was for Maiden there, front of stage. But my f**king depression and fear kicked me out. I was alone there, i felt alone, so i left the hall 2 hours before the supportband. I will return, i swear. 🙂
Sensational band. They guys are beginning to show their ages a little, but I saw them for the 11th time last summer on the latest Future Past tour and if you have the chance to see them Doug then you must!!!
Get yourself tickets to their tour this year i promise you wont regret it!!!!!! Please react to when the wild wind blows live from the en vivo dvd 🤘🤘🤘🤘
This song makes me happy Doug, thank you... BTW, there are a lot of good songs in Brave New world, you got check someday.... Thanks for Maidens Mondays...
I hired a string quartet and had this song played as I walked down the isle in church at my wedding. Up the Irons!!!
Very cool. Good on ya.

Agreed. Top 5 Maiden song for me personally.

They also do lots of bs too long slow boring songs
Steve Harris is clearly a legend of heavy metal. He wrote an amazing number of master pieces

I’d 100% recommend them live - I caught this tour and it was awesome. I’m constantly surprised by how active they are for their age

I saw this tour at Hammerstein Ballroom in New York on the second night.

Navigate the Seas of the Sun
seems to me you have more fun with Maiden then any other artist you review.......love and respect dude
Hi from germany.
I love this album, because it is a f**king great concert location.
Dortmund Westfalenhalle 1
In the 90th they let arround 15.000 peopoe in, today they let arround 12.000 people in.
Maiden Monday is the best!
Sensational band. They guys are beginning to show their ages a little, but I saw them for the 11th time last summer on the latest Future Past tour and if you have the chance to see them Doug then you must!!!
Thanks Doug. Regarding a previous comment, you can never have too much Maiden 🤘🎸
UP THE IRONS! I'll be seeing them in Pittsburgh!
i love this song live!
We all said it from the start, their catalog just absolutely goes everywhere.
Need to do some Bruce solo acoustic stuff. Arc of space or navigate the seas of the sun perhaps?
Brilliant songs
It's a Classic "Hey, let me tell you a Story" kind of song...
Got tickets for San Antonio in November!!
You're getting Kansas, Dust In The Wind. I get that. Me? I'm getting Prodigal Son vibes (funnily enough also by Maiden off their Killers album)
I got to see them at Ozzfest and the energy and engagement they brought blew Black Sabbath out of the water (Sabbath was great too though)
Like a Journeyman in the Trades 🔨 🛠
Great song, glad you did this one Doug. Love it when bands can be a little bit different. Then sit back and listen to all the triggered purists.
It’s so like Dust in the wind.
More Yes more Yes
Get yourself tickets to their tour this year i promise you wont regret it!!!!!! Please react to when the wild wind blows live from the en vivo dvd 🤘🤘🤘🤘
This song makes me happy Doug, thank you... BTW, there are a lot of good songs in Brave New world, you got check someday.... Thanks for Maidens Mondays...
Like Dream of Mirrors
Ghost of the navigator is another fantastic song, and sadly never played again since 2001
The thin line between love and hate....
Nomad...
But I love all of them...
