Not a comment about Dave’s playing…which is fabulous. Back on the Seventh Son tour, saw them on their last US date in Hampton VA. Had a female friend who, ahem, managed to get full access backstage passes. (She had actually travelled with the band/entourage from the show the night before…that’s all I know and all I wanted to know!). After attending the usual meet & greet with all the other folks w limited backstage passes, she led me to the dressing room which was two large-ish connected rooms. Lots of people in there, lots of alcohol, some food. Bruce was pissed off about something, don’t remember what, and had retired to the tour bus. My take on the rest of the band and the rest of that night: Steve was truly kind and made you feel like he was interested in whatever it was you were saying. He also came across as wickedly smart. Nicko was a hoot. He was drinking and having a helluva good time. Seemed to be the life of the party. Dave was already pretty smashed by the time I got to speak with him. He was very cool, but I didn’t get to talk with him until later in the night…largely because: I spent about an hour or so sitting on a couch bullshitting with Adrian. I am a guitarist as well. So Adrian and I started talking and we ended up talking about gear and guitars. It was pretty in depth about tone and settings and technique, and how it all ties together. Early on, I tried to be polite and not monopolize his time and beg off, but he said, “No this is cool, I don’t get to have conversations like this at these things very often.” So the two of us sat there with a couple of adult beverages in hand and just BS’d about the guitar. It was an amazing night!
He has that nice grampa face that warms your heart. And his entire stance is like "oh I'm just happy to be here" but when he shreds that guitar, it sings! My favorite maiden guitarris!

My favorite Dave solo comes in Caught Somewhere in Time. Like an out of control run away train, that speedy beginning is perfectly built in after the first chorus. It leads into what I consider a legendary marathon of a duo solo by both him and then Adrian. Was so lucky they played that track on this tour so fans can witness how it’s done

Which is honestly not my favorite overall song from SIT, but after the 2nd verse, Davie has another incredible solo followed by the “take my hand… oh-oh-oh…. Oh-oh-oh-oh” chant part, which always gives me goosebumps
Always loved Dave's playing. Very bluesy with a warm tone. Easy to tell who was playing which solo, Adrian's tone was a bit more aggressive and the two blended well on harmonies.

The thing I've always found the most impressive about Maiden, isn't any one man's efforts, but how expertly they layer the guitars. It's never too much. Timing and space between parts of solos, gives the songs a depth that few bands can rival. Martin Birch was a mastermind.
Agreed. Maybe that's why the solos never really stood out to me with Maiden songs because they may have be mixed to not stand out, but to be like an additional rhythm part of the song.
@@mattm7798 The style they favor, rotates guitar lead parts almost continuously. This gives the songs complexity without overindulgence. "Ryme Of The Ancient Mariner" epitomizes this this style of composition. It's my all time favorite Maiden track.

Great video and what a great way to mark Dave's birthday. His solo in Ancient Mariner is the one for me, the way it builds. I must have listened to that song so many times since my introduction to Maiden around 1986, but even today it is one that makes the hairs stand up on my arms and a shiver run down my back every time. So of course the answer to the title question is _Yes, he is really great_. He certainly is on hiw own merits, and as an extra, he was very fortunate to find Adrian as the other half of the mighty guitar duo. Their respective styles, sounds and the chemistry between has been as crucial to Maiden as Steve's songwriting and prowess on bass.
Dave Murray is a monster, a master and an inspiration. He’s the reason I started playing the guitar back in the 80’s. He was, still is and will forever be my number one influence. I can only say thank you. Ah… his Powerslave solo never ceases to amaze me.
My all time favorite guitarist. He’s most of the reason I TRY to play! The intro to Still Life I remember watching, rewinding, watching again on my Live After Death VHS tape to learn the solo. I love his legato style. I think without Dave and Steve, it just wouldn’t be Maiden.
I figured it out once I learned how to play guitar, Dave and Adrian are complimentary to each other but their tones and phrasing are different. My two favorite guitar players of all time here on this planet and band, there is no better period.
Davie was a HUGE influence on my playing back when I started in the 80's. Sure, he's not the cleanest technical shredder of the era, but I feel like there's a lot of emotion in his playing. His mixture of legato, bends, hammer on/pull offs, and whammy techniques all contributed to his own style. ALSO, I've noticed that he's always smiling when playing live. Always. After over 50 years of playing, he still LOVES it!
As a 13/14 year old girl, I fell in love with Dave’s first Powerslave solo the first time I ever heard it. It made me tear up. I would come home from school and put the record player needle in the exact groove of where the solo started. In the states, MTV didn’t show much of Maiden’s videos or do many interviews, so I really knew very little about Dave at the time. He is still my favorite member and am still moved by his playing.
Dave is my fav in the band (and it's really not an easy choice because they are all so good). The retained takes always were those with the most dynamics over the few little noises or "mistakes". Soul before technic (and don't make me wrong, the technic is really high). Merry Christmas to all and Happy Birthday Dave ! Fav solo ? Too hard to choose. "Be Quick or Be Dead" isn't mentioned here so I take this one, speed, fluid, crazy...
Dave is absolutely incredible the way you played it by the entire song and then playing him singletrack brings a tear to my eye bring me back way back❤😅
In the early 80s Dave was the inspiration that made me grow my hair (that I still have today) and made me pick up a strat and modify it so it had the HSH configuration. Still use that guitar today, along with many others too now! Thanks Dave. Love your work mate!
Strangely enough, one of Dave’s greatest solo is the one in Adrian’s song Coming Home (Adrian’s subsequent solo is also great). Also the first Solo in the Parchement is great, to mention a recent one
What do you mean-underrated ? He plays in one of the most recognizable bands in the history of rock, plays concerts worldwide and filling all those hudge arenas and has millions of fans. How can he be more recognizable ? Doing shampoo commercial ?
He's the best! True. Iron Maiden wouldn't be Iron Maiden without him. A pivotal part of the great machine which is MAIDEN! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dave! 🙏🥳💕🤘🎸💖😇 Up the Irons 🤘😜
One of my favourite solos of his is Hell on earth, and it totally felt unbelievable to see it live this summer. Thank you for your legacy in maiden, Dave. Dave is such a king and my inspiration to keep going with guitarr 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks for posting this video. I almost forgot how cool Dave Murray was/is. I always dug his "Hendrix meets Uli Jon Roth" style of playing. One of the metal guitar legends.
Dave is just an animal!! great person as well!! one of my inspirations as well. cant wait till this tour is over gonna have to cook for him again[ he said my club sandwich is one of the best he has ever had!! we both live on Maui.
He has always been my favorite guitar player. Furthermore, I enjoy a lot when I see his happiness when hé plays…always smiling and great chemistry with the audience
Dave is one of the most recognizable metal guitarists ever. I've always loved his sound. "The Trooper", "Lightning Strikes Twice", and "Brave New World" are some of my favorite Dave solos.
To me Adrian's leads were always written, rehearsed, pre-meditated. Dave's always sounded off the cuff, and in the moment, capturing the raw energy of the song. I always appreciated that about his playing
Dave Murray is one of my top 3 guitar idols. Love his playing and his look too. My favorite solo by Dave is in the song Powerslave and I also love his other solos too
I used to crank the solos from Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (Somewhere in Time) on my cheap Walkman back in the 80's...such great playing from Adrian and Dave on that album. I always liked how that track was a little odd, but those solos always seemed to soar through my soul, and they always held a special place in my heart. I wore out my cassette of Somewhere in Time and it was the first CD I ever bought...almost 40 years later I still have it. Thank you Dave!

The sole reason I play guitar. The greatest 🙌 Happy Birthday Dave! Great video showing off the unbelievable awesomeness of the master of Maiden! UP THE IRONS 🤘
Dave is one of my all time favorite guitar players, his guitar solos are so exciting. The solo to number of the beast is one of the guitar solos of all time in my opinion. He's a beast of a player.
Dave is the best..one of the greatest of all times. The reason for tons of teens have bought and started to play the guitar. I'm a huge fan of him since 2003, when I was 11 yo and listened for the 1st time to Virtual XI and then DOD and Iron Maiden. Suddenly I have bought a b&w Squier strat with a combo and now, I'm spending time and money to build his rack system. It's a true disease 😅 Thanks Dave and I.T.I.!
He is my favorite guitar player. He is not most tecnical, but his style is very iconic. It's very easy to recognise, almost as a vocalist is easy to recognise. My favorite solo is his solo on Hallowed be thy name, and his solo on slow part of Phantom of the opera.
Great channel, thank you. I always wanted to try to find out who plays the guitar lead break in genghis khan? Ive searched video etc, no luck. Sounds much like dave murray, my fav guitarist.
I can listen to most of maidens songs and tell you who is playing what as far as solo's go. Adrian is more thought out and planned and Dave is does alot off the cuff. Both are truly amazing and together they are such a compliment to each other, but it is easy to tell dave just by the way its played. He really is an awesome player and musician.
Adrian's is usually very bluesy sounding. Davey does lots of the legato stuff and his trills are a really signature move. Janick's stuff is usually just bonkers. Great video innit?
Dave is absolutely one of the greatest guitarists of all time and defenetely my all time favourite. He'd played so many great solos that it is impossible to say what is the best but if i have to pick one i'll choose holy smoke.
One band, so many talents. And so much pure pleasure and energy they're giving for all those years. And all seemingly very nice blokes. Simply amazing! Anyway, so much great guitar work in almost any song, but Phantom of the Opera definitely ranks with the best for me.
His solos and sound always somehow are (at least to me) so full of blood and horror!!! And he is so unique, although it doesn't seems like it is something special. But he is ! He is secret weapon of Maiden's sound!!! We allways thought it's Steve's bass and his way of making Maiden's unique sound. And of course it is, but Dave's way of playing is that what on Steve's basis gives the right shape!!!
My favourite solo is on the song Powerslave, it was also quite genius how the whole band captured an Egyptian sound style within a Heavy Metal Band, even the rhythm guitar behind it sounds Egyptian, how they did that I can only conclude one of them had a past life of that time, Best album by far.
The sond was written by Bruce Dickinson. The song uses harmonic minor and diminished scales. That's the classical arabic sound. Also the slide octaves given open arabic feel.
@@rockzilla5150 Yes its genius how they made the whole song sound like that even the rhythm guitars behind the solo, I just love how they did it I can never get bored of it, I knew it was some kind of scale and may not have anything to do with past lives,...but who knows with what inspired them to write such a great song, and very thought provoking. :)
Great video! You showed how astonishing Dave is in the band. Merry Christmas to you and your family. We wish you peace and happiness as we continue to pray for you and Ukraine.🙏🏻🎧🎄
Dave Murray, is an absolutely guitar idol. His most impressive work for me is on Piece of Mind, and Caught Somewhere in Time. I love Iron Maiden because of his phrasing. My favorite solo is From the song “Holy Smoke” a very under seen solo. HBD to him!
I think that most people see Iron Maiden guitarists... and Judas Priest guitarists as well, as a whole. Meaning they don't distinguish much between Dave, Adrian and Janick and simply view them as a unit
@@MetalPilgrim Well that is another truth - that the twin guitars of Maiden *are* a unit that make their sound what it is. Just like Moody and Marsden or Tipton and Downing.
Dave's solos are like little compositions of music within the song. CSIT solo is a masterpiece in and of itself IMO. It is super complex, with no erroneous notes, they have to land on the right chords at the exact time or the whole solo is off. Tremendous musicianship right there.
Wow. That was very eye opening. I've been a Maiden fan for 30 years, but hearing the isolated track really shows how many later lead players have similar traits to Dave.
He blew me away when I first heard "Killers" on initial release. I've stood in front of him so many times I lost count. Damn picks always end up somewhere else.
I'm 53 and I first started with Powerslave and worked back as a teenager. I remember Maiden England circulating along with the full LPS earlier. The song Powerslave sits near the top for me and Dave's a huge part of that.

@@shanecopner7827 I definitely agree. Must admit though Dave and Janick had good chemistry together also. Went to see them live around late 1990 or early 1991. They were absolutely amazing live back then.
This was very cool & brought more of his brilliant playing to another level like this. He has clearly grown decade by decade and is on par with any guitar virtuoso in any playing style from classical to jazz.
I love in early Maiden when Dave would use the univibe in studio and live. I also love that he plays on the neck pickup a lot and switches it to the bridge pickup mid solo. Is lead Styles completely unique his rhythm style is pretty much perfection.
His solos are structured in an interesting way, and back in the early 1980s when I began listening to them, it was refreshing. Always something fun in his solos.

My all time favorite guitarist. He’s most of the reason I TRY to play! The intro to Still Life I remember watching, rewinding, watching again on my Live After Death VHS tape to learn the solo. I love his legato style. I think without Dave and Steve, it just wouldn’t be Maiden.
Still life by 1985 on LAD tape?! You meant MAIDEN ENGLAND VHS by 1989
Agree with sentiment, but it’s not on Live After Death as Samir said
Dave Murray IS the reason I love Iron Maiden. I consider myself lucky to have watched him perform live..
Honestly I never quite knew who was doing what. The songs are so good, the musicians really complement each other.
Dave is the man
I figured it out once I learned how to play guitar, Dave and Adrian are complimentary to each other but their tones and phrasing are different.
Ive been a dan of Dave's since 1982, and he is still one of my favourites.
Dave’s slow solo in Powerslave is godlike!
These isolated solos are so awesome!
Daves Powerslave solo is my favorite, so much emotion coming from those notes, you can feel the pain and sadness like his guitar is crying.
Dave is a beauty of a player. He's not as well appreciated as he should be!
Dead on as always! This needed to be done and so does the other you spoke of... Thank you!
He was a big influence for me and quite distinctive with his fast legato passages, whammy bar trickery, and switching to the neck pickup on solos.
Dave has always been my all-time favorite guitarist! ❤❤
Strangely enough, one of Dave’s greatest solo is the one in Adrian’s song Coming Home (Adrian’s subsequent solo is also great). Also the first Solo in the Parchement is great, to mention a recent one
Thank you so much! It's incredible how you can isolate guitar solos so cleanly!
One of the most underrated guitarists in metal. One of my favorite guitarists 👍
Now that’s TRUTH.
Shoutout to Dave cause his style is so recognizable since he loves the whammy and the fast trills. All of Maiden’s guitarists are so underrated!
One of my favourite solos of his is Hell on earth, and it totally felt unbelievable to see it live this summer. Thank you for your legacy in maiden, Dave.
Dave is such a king and my inspiration to keep going with guitarr 🤘🏻🤘🏻
what i love about this is all the imperfection - it reminds us all that you don't have to always nail the exact picking if you nail the VIBE.
He sounds so beautiful isolated! How did I overlook his awesomeness for 40 plus years?
Thanks for posting this video. I almost forgot how cool Dave Murray was/is. I always dug his "Hendrix meets Uli Jon Roth" style of playing. One of the metal guitar legends.
Dave is just an animal!! great person as well!! one of my inspirations as well. cant wait till this tour is over gonna have to cook for him again[ he said my club sandwich is one of the best he has ever had!! we both live on Maui.
From his tone to his feel and technique and all round nice guy - Mr Dave Murray is and has always been my favourites. I salute you sir.
Dave Murray also co-wrote Deja Vu with Harris on Somewhere In Time. Great vid!
First time i realised how fast he was - end of his solo on 'That Girl' (b side of Stranger in a Strange Land. Just incredible!
He is so good. Been watching and listening to him for 30 years. Really solid player!
The most underrated metal player ever!!
underrated I'm sick of hearing that word...!
What do you mean-underrated ? He plays in one of the most recognizable bands in the history of rock, plays concerts worldwide and filling all those hudge arenas and has millions of fans. How can he be more recognizable ? Doing shampoo commercial ?
Dave's absolutely amazing live! I got lucky back in 2019 when Iron Maiden came to philly, and i got daves pick when he tossed it in the crowd!
Totally right, you can also pick it up from their tone as well. Glad I'm not the only total geek out there!
Adrian's is usually very bluesy sounding. Davey does lots of the legato stuff and his trills are a really signature move. Janick's stuff is usually just bonkers. Great video innit?
holy smoke! how did you get those isolated solos? also, the edits are clean af, man, nice job
earned urself a sub!
An unsung monster of a guitarist and real team player as well as a helluva nice guy!
Dave is absolutely one of the greatest guitarists of all time and defenetely my all time favourite. He'd played so many great solos that it is impossible to say what is the best but if i have to pick one i'll choose holy smoke.
Dave Murray is why I play lead. He’s one of my earliest influences.
Thanks, Dave!
Happy Birthday to Dave! And happy and safe holidays to everyone!
Great video! You showed how astonishing Dave is in the band. Merry Christmas to you and your family. We wish you peace and happiness as we continue to pray for you and Ukraine.🙏🏻🎧🎄
What truly makes Dave one of the greatest is watching him play live. He nails all his solos! So thankful they’re still touring!
most amazing is how these guys remember all these lines from so many songs, sure lots of practice but still
Dave Murray, is an absolutely guitar idol. His most impressive work for me is on Piece of Mind, and Caught Somewhere in Time. I love Iron Maiden because of his phrasing. My favorite solo is From the song “Holy Smoke” a very under seen solo. HBD to him!
Always loved Dave's playing. Wouldn't be the same without him.
When people mention the likes of iommi , slash ,may they forget Dave Murray who's up there with the greats. A truly underrated guitarist.
Really cool video! Murray is tha man!
How did you get those isolated solos? Really nice to listen to Dave's guitar isolated :)
For me he's a phenomenal guitarist, his guitar dexterity is amazing, at concerts I'm always in front of him it's great!
Someone gave me a copy of Live After Death on VHS in '87. I loved it, especially Dave Murray. An amazing, underrated guitarist.
Yes! I saw Live After Death in '87 when I was 15 and I was just in awe of Dave
Long time fan here, Dave and Adrian just compliment each other, nothing competing, both are so good on their own.
Awesome video MP. Next do a Clive v Nico video. Dave Murray has a very fluid, bluesy style of soloing. It’s awesome.
Well, Dave is simply fire, I have seen him live, simply the best performer ever
Dave has always been one of my favorite players...💚🎸
He blew me away when I first heard "Killers" on initial release. I've stood in front of him so many times I lost count. Damn picks always end up somewhere else.
I'm 53 and I first started with Powerslave and worked back as a teenager. I remember Maiden England circulating along with the full LPS earlier. The song Powerslave sits near the top for me and Dave's a huge part of that.
His solos on powerslave live after death are amazing
His solo's on the 1982 live version of wrathchild at Reading.
All I can say is bloody hell with the hairs standing on the back of my neck.
Totally agree joe,so underrated guitarist,Adrian and dave, together magnificent, just to say I love janick as well, but, those 2 are another notch above him.
Love maiden, and can't wait to see bruce in Manchester may 2024,with another underrated guitarist, producer,Mr roy z👍👍👍👍
@@shanecopner7827 I definitely agree. Must admit though Dave and Janick had good chemistry together also.
Went to see them live around late 1990 or early 1991.
Loved the extended ending to the Iron Maiden song when they play it live.
Also love Bruce's catchphrase at the end of that song.
Thank you from Iron Maiden and from Eddie and from the boy's.
They were absolutely amazing live back then.
Hugely under rated mostly because he's such a modest and softly spoken man.
The Powerslave solo is just so majestic . Stunningly beautiful
I love all things Maiden, there’s no doubt Dave’s piece in the band has been huge . Cool segment , Merry Christmas from Canada 🇺🇦🇨🇦Cheers
Dave has always been my absolute favourite guitarist since I first heard him.
How do you isolate his guitar tracks like that?
This was very cool & brought more of his brilliant playing to another level like this. He has clearly grown decade by decade and is on par with any guitar virtuoso in any playing style from classical to jazz.
I love in early Maiden when Dave would use the univibe in studio and live. I also love that he plays on the neck pickup a lot and switches it to the bridge pickup mid solo. Is lead Styles completely unique his rhythm style is pretty much perfection.
Whats an univibe?
The clairvoyant solo 😍
Beautiful melody
my favorite person in the band and been seeing maiden for over 40 years!!!!!!!!!! got tix to next years tour already.
His solos are structured in an interesting way, and back in the early 1980s when I began listening to them, it was refreshing. Always something fun in his solos.
Dave is a beast and one of the guys who made me start playing guitar, it wasn't until i got older that i grew to respect Adrian equally, love em both!
I played guitar first thanks to him and Adrian. I always loved the guy. Always smiling and feeling the notes he plays.
His solos I prefered from Dave are: Powerslave, To tame a land, caught somewhere in Time. Thanks to Dave for all these years, without him Maiden wouldn't have been the same and thanks for influencing Adrian who is one of my top 3 guitar player 🤘Up the Irons🤘
All of these comments for Dave are brilliant guys, you all can hear the true legend that he is, this was the man who influenced me to pick up the guitar in 1981 and when I first saw them at Glasgow Apollo in 1980 he really stood out and played amazingly, I bought his signature strat a couple of years ago and it's the best strat that I have played, amazing guitar player 👍😉
Daves Solos on Hallowed be Thy Name, The Trooper, Rhime of the Ancient Mariner, Powerslave, The Phantom of the Opera, Somewhere in Time. Are truly artwork, Dave is a Legend!
