That scene was one of my favorites. Yes, this country is beautiful. Yes, there are kind people everywhere. And yet, do any of us know how much anti-black violence that elderly black man in the rural south has seen?
How has he survived? By, minding his own business....and staying away from strangers. In this country we cannot all walk through places that were once "sun down towns" (or remain so). I'm sure it will be confusing to many, but running 3700 miles through this country is a real privilege. I mean, Ahmad Arbery couldn't even run through a nearby neighborhood without being murdered.
I'm grateful for the documentary. The cinematography was beautiful. But, I'm also left wondering if a similar project could be done with BIPOC. If so, what would that look like?

@ultimateluigi640 I'm well familiar with Hella. This post isn't about him. Clearly, I look forward to following his journey and I hope it's a safe one. I did not say that running was a sport reserved for "white males." I am not a white male and I love running. But, since you are unaware of the risks that black runners face, perhaps you should look up the story of Ahmad Arbery. If you are unaware of the inequity behind how black bodies are policed on the land here in the US, look up Breonna Taylor, watch the 13th on Netflix....and most importantly, check the privilege of assuming you can tell a black person that their readings on race is wrong.

Growing up in Cali, walking that huge state I felt like I had answered all the questions I had going in. But that becomes the sweet spot. If you are enjoying the journey then everything else is bonus and pushing deeper into the unknown. It is after that part of my hike that I learned the unexpected things about myself and I started observing rather than comparing everything to my expectations. That is the lesson I've taken the most from my hike into my life past that adventure.

The funny thing is that I used to consider it a sport and now I don't consider a sport at all, it's really just a medium." thank you Salomon for supporting someone like him, someone who tells stories through running, someone who shows the true potential of moving, someone who elevates running above just the pushing and pulling onto the realm of connection, of care, of curiosity. one last thing: if anyone knows the song starting at 59:07 (right after he deserts the first trolley), I'd be over the moon if u could let me know :)

Very happy that I stuck with it. It isn't about politics at all. It's about appreciating life and people. @@eugenemorrison2720 Thanks Eugene. I have to say, at 38 you are too young to be concerned about age holding you back! I have 2 super-fit kids at age 8 and 10 - they are both superb runners - our 8 year old daughter is running 10km at around 5:30 min/km pace, our 10 year old son is running 30km and can run sub 4 min kms over shorter distances - all on rough trails, so I have no choice but to keep it going. When 70 year olds can run sub-3 hour marathons, there are no excuses!! ...and it takes you away from the global turmoil splattered all over our screens! :-)

Thank You for sharing your experience(s) with us Rickey. I just finished watching and had Alexa play John Denver Take Me Home , to the place I belong....Seems fitting. Your journey reminds me of an intensive retreat. There was an awakening, and even somewhat of a conversion. And plenty of positive energy (aside from day 100 and having to drink mustard). Thanks again. Steve

I love you Ricky Gates. I'm a 56 year old trail running idiot but I love you. I love your vision, your ideals, your vision, your romanticism. Passion is a person's drive, their love, their life force that drives them to see and experience beyond what they ever thought or conceived was possible for themselves. We all have drive, we all have dreams but not everybody has passion. I love your passion.

Interesting choice to give equal weight to two different messages. I don't feel like the transition between them is always smooth, but there's a lot to like about both of them. The message that we are mostly the same continues to be so needed in this country, and Rickey doesn't oversell it. This rings true with every other interview I've seen him give. Just a very genuine guy who's not afraid to admit that he doesn't understand some things. And that while he'll refrain from trying to wrap his experience up in a tidy package, there's plenty to be taken from it.
    My first thought as this
wrapped up was that I wish there were more people out there like him. But I guess that's the knee jerk response- to hear him tell it, there already are. In abundance.

Oh beautiful. Truly. The landscape, the people, the journey. The diversity, the beauty, the adversity. Deeply human, poetic and inspiring, wise and crazy. When running is much more than just running, it brings about true life experiences. And this movie illustrates that so perfectly. Thank you

An amazing film. And one I needed to see right now. In a small way, I can relate to a lot of this. 4 years ago I ran a marathon. Whilst I was already a regular runner, part of me choosing to run a marathon was the end of a relationship. Since then I've let myself go, and have had some minor physical and mental health issues. But recently I've decided to get myself fit again, and running is the only way I know how to do that. With lockdowns and Covid etc, maybe this time I need to do my own thing. I live in Britain. A lot smaller than the US, with less variants of weather and terrain. But I'm sure there are things I could do to get to know my own country better.
    Thanks for the inspiration Rickey!

second time watching this. so incredible. takes me back to 2015 doing a 48 states road trip with my dad. so much similar feelings. vulnerability at times, meeting great people in the south (yankee alert) and coming home to the warm embrace of our family after 14 days on the road. the weird paralell sense to that trip with your journey, Rickey, brings me to borderline tears. It's never as good as it was in the moment, but now you can take that journey and think about it throughout life. Also, bravo on the brutal athleticism too. The desert is fucked up.
