Sadly there aren't many worth it anymore. I bought two Flightys on Jomashop for $247 each, and two NDC straps. One will have the battery removed and get tucked away in the safe as a gift for my son, as he gets older. I just love the Flighty design. Size is perfect all around, and losing the bracelet is a must. Tons of features for the price, it punches way above it's weight class. I've kicked around buying two more for graduation gifts for my nephews in the next decade. I have a feeling Seiko will redesign the Flighty and make it bigger. I had to act now. Although I respect Seiko and their diver history, I think they're the ugliest watches on the market. I'll never own one.
Agree 100%, my only modern Seiko at this point is my Tuna. I can’t deal with Seikos inaccurate mechanical movements anymore, especially at these nee prices. The 7c46 is great, my Tuna loses 2 second a month.
I swapped my SBBN031 and a few other watches to get an SLA021 a few months ago. I loved the tuna but the MM300 was my grail since years. Seeing this new beautiful model makes me really want to get a Tuna again. Thanks for showing!
Absolutely love this watch. Always beautiful to look at and can handle the tough days. Has been my grab and run watch for a year now and I never get tired of it.
I am wearing this Tuna now Bruce, your video on this made my pulled the trigger on a mint condition from the used market, I agree everything you said about this, and it’s so underrated from a horological perspective. The only thing I would have said is man the strap on this is the most comfy one I ever had from Seiko, better than the crafter blue one I have on my samurai. I love the watch thank you Bruce, you are one of my all time favourite and wish you all the best!!!
My 031 Tuna has become one of my favorite pieces in my collection of 23. It's nice to have a grab and go watch that doesn't need to be set every time I want to wear it. I love the back story to the Tuna and that it's such a different design. Nobody is going to mistake it for some Rolex homage. I'm with you on the dial text. That satin silver Marinemaster Professional on the dial just makes it that much nicer. Lack of a bracelet was a definite miss on Seiko's part. At least have the option.
The tuna has a great/small “lug to lug” dimension which it what matters when talking about fitment and wearability. Too many RUclips watch channels focus on wrist circumference when all that dimension tells us is how long of a strap is needed. Tell me the “lug to lug” dimension and I’ll know if the watch will fit my wrist, even without trying it on.
To be fair, they have raised value, if by "value" you mean "quality". They have included a longer PR, sapphire glass, and often an upgrade to the aluminum bezel in the form of steel or ceramic.
They just battling against the grey market and appalling to a wider audience. Look at previous rrp then tell me if they have really raised prices that much
Open question - we talk about Seikos "price increases"....but I wonder, how much of that is due to increases in MSRP (aka "Seiko's prices"), vs dealers offering less and less discounts off MSRP due to higher demand for the brand? Let's not forget the SKX used to be sold to us at a heavily discounted "grey market" price...more than 50% off or more! The Turtles nowadays have a similar MSRP (about a 50 dollar difference) but clearly less discounts leading to higher "street" prices which are hundreds of dollars more than 2014 SKX prices. On the flipside of course, the MSRP of let's say, the Alpinist, has jumped from 595 (?) to 700...so there's that.
Small correction: The 7c46 was not created in 1975. The original Tuna in 1975 had a mechanical movement. The first quartz Tunas in the late 70s and early 80s had a 7549 quartz movement. The 7c46 was created afterwards at some point in the late 80s.
Honestly don’t see this new model as being superior to the previous model except maybe the handset. Removing the Marinemaster text is blasphemy IMO sure the sapphire crystal is an upgrade most of the time but to put a flat one and then up charge $400-500? Pass. The domed hardlex looks much better aesthetically and is visibly clearer and being that it is a professional tool watch hardlex is superior if and when used for actually diving. Not too heartbroken over there being no bracelet option knowing this will accept any straight end link bracelet the options are vast and although the bracelet on my 031 is very nice I just don’t think this watch looks right on anything but rubber just like the original as seiko intended again it’s a tool watch, nobody’s diving in this thing was a stainless steel bracelet but after paying a big premium you would think they would make both available. Hold on to your marinemaster dial versions because when they get scarcer and scarcer the price is going to sky rocket. You can have a watchmaker put a sapphire crystal in and pressure test it for peanuts compared to this $500 up charge sorry seiko you blew this one.
For me a no-go. Too expensive compared to previous generation (paying for the sapphire only is too much + never had problems with stock hardlex). Second and most important, hands are just too massive. Reminds me on Citizen Promaster 90's line-up but just dont work with tuna. SBBN031/33/37 or SBBN007/15/17 are a better bargain imo
Old watches will always be a better value. We will say the same about this new 043 when the next more expensive generation comes out in however many years
You always do a great review Sir. To the watch, no bracelet, no Marine master, that awful cheap PS "X", the price$$$....not even a signed crown? plus it's quartz ? Seiko are out of their minds, barking mad. Anyhoo, great review as ever. Best wishes from Scotland 🏴🇬🇧
Miss the triangle lume pip on the bezel, big dome crystal, stepped dial, and silver printing on the last gen (along with the marinemaster on the dial). This one looks nice and I like the handset, but the last gen had more that made it stand out as something special. This one looks like every other mid range Seiko... just rounder.
Yep- $1,500 is a lot when you can get a Sinn. You have said this before, but if I am going to get a Seiko- I am going to get the King Turtle for 1/3 the price.
Four years ago you could buy a Tuna for $995 w/bracelet. Today, it will cost $1,500. Only difference is sapphire crystal; it still uses the same quartz movement. Seiko, WTF?
I find the SKX and the Turtle are more visually appealing to me. The Tuna may be made better and more expensive but doesn't look any better than other Seiko divers. The willard, sumo and 62 Mas remake look better also IMHO.
On finishing many swiss divers are better and you could get a nicer experience but there is no better swiss diving watch than this for diving. let alone there is no better swiss quartz movement for diving than this. This quartz was made specifically for diving, high efficiency high torque, there is a lot into it. is just way more durable reliable and efficient in EVERY single sense of a tool. Is just what it is. As a DIVING tool watch there is no better swiss diving watch. many using this movement reporting over 10 years of battery life and still going.
I agree with this. I don't always love their design language but Citizen are great value and QC. The community doesn't adore them as much as Seiko so the price of them second hand is usually a steal.
Like the dial & hands especially, but hate the day/date complication. Wouldn't want one because quartz & the day date- automatic or spring drive and time only & I'd be tempted... Would look great on a mesh. I'll stick with my 6r35 Sumo. Cheers mate 👍🏻
Great vid and loving the Bluna. Awhile back I picked up a lightly used Seiko SBBN035. I never thought I’d connect with a quartz but I have, it is among my favorite pieces. While I like this newest model better, not near enough for me to sell and pay the difference to get this one. These Tuna’s are great.
I liked the Tuna with the highly polished case but never had one. But, Seiko does not mind failure and poverty and BK, so they killed it. Buy used on ebay? Scratched to hell probably. And I agree with him here at 10:00 where he rues the loss of "Marine Master" on the dial. That was about half the charm of the watch! Somebody at Seiko needs to be fired. Oh well, I have my stunning Breitling Intruder back up and running and boy do people notice it. Gets em mad, I think, it's so beautiful. Replaced the movement after Breitling said they could not fix it. One guy in Halle, Germany wanted $800 for the movement in 2021, but I got one from a good guy in Portland, Ore for $188. Breitling was using a Japanese movement in the Intruder when I bought it new in 1998. It evolved from the Pluton in 1988. Intruder only out for 2 yrs. See them on Ebay. My gold Mido MultiFort Powerwind is being overhauled and repaired for a mere $595 over 6 to 8 weeks, but I love it. It too catches people's eye with its SS case, gold dial and hands and solid gold 18 Kt. bezel which is a thick plate of solid 18 Kt gold. What a beauty. Probably no more than 38mm or even 36. 1960 vitage- HS graduation. I wore it everyday for 20 years. Men's watches then were light and smallish. They could use plates of gold since it was $32 per ounce. Probably cost $150. Shame that when Seiko gets a winner like the shiny, Marine Master Tuna, they immediately kill it. MyTurtle months ago started losing 10 minutes over 3 days. Then my jeweler suggested a new movement in it for $175 total. He said on the time grapher it just did not have the impulse or something to run right. I did that new movement and now it is very accurate and looks great on that silicon strap it came on six years ago. When I B it in Dec. 2016 for $295 on AMZN, I B 3 more of those straps from the Seiko srv cnter in NJ for ~$40 each, 22mm. NOW Seiko has started making a 20mm strap in the same silicon but someone in N. Carolina wants $83 for one on eBay. Even my jeweler wants $80 for it! I have the orange dial Seiko diver SNE109?? and the lousy 20mm strap Seiko used on it sell fell apart. You remember those, cut from an old tire. It is 20mm but I wont pay $80 for one. I don't see it on the Seiko website so don't know what happened with it. Even Mark at LI watch said he had them at ~$50 but I do not see it on his website. One can buy plenty of 20mm silicon straps on AMZN for more like $14.95. That Seiko SNE109, now discontinued needless to say, is awesome. Solar and deadly accurate. It has some heft to it, being a diver. It'll look great on SOME silicon strap.
You should do a video of best expensive quartz watches. When people see the price on this, we all question what we actually get here that makes it so expensive. If they just used a Sellita 200, that's good enough for people who are allready gravitating towards the design of the tuna. In Europe, this is closer to 2000$ now.
Hello Bruce, It pains me to acknowledge that Seiko has lost me. I am grateful that I do have a skx007j, a Alpinist sarb017 and a Samurai STO PLUS A TURTLE. I really like the Turtle and it is comfortable but at the same time doesn't seem planted on my 7 1/2 inch wrist. My skx feels so comfortable and planted on my wrist. I feel that the Tuna will likewise so I will pull the trigger on one which may be my last Seiko. Thanks for your very good videos.
They are also releasing the metal bezel black dial tuna soon with bracelet which looks good. Price wise ofcourse ridiculous premium considering really one update. Glad I bought the previous gen tunas, I have the sbbn031, sbbn025, sbdx011, sbdx014, sbdb013 and the LE sla041.
Great video...I enjoyed it. I only require a small watch collection, and my favourite ones are in this price range...to me it's been the best blend of price, quality and uniqueness. I like that I can still afford a professional level watch....as, to be honest, the auto Marinemasters and 1000m tuna's are getting a bit up there. I think the 300m tuna's are a fantastic buy in a great price niche...if one can get over it being quartz. I have the SBBN037 and SBBN040, and I preferred to buy that big tuna over an SBDX watch.
I had the golden tuna before it was called a tuna back in 1980. But, regrettably, I let it go since it really didn't fit my 6-1/4 inch wrist. Now I'm looking to buy a tuna again.
They are a strange old company .. They have went from king of value to what I would say is quite poor value in the blink of an eye . Personally not a fan these days but they have their fans and I respect that .
Great video as always, would be keen to get your opinion or thoughts on this the blue tuna comparing it to the regular black tuna as well as the recent 033 style all steel with the bracelet. I have an 031, and I am quite split between the Bluna and the Metal suit version that comes on the bracelet, Love the tuna just want to add another flavour of tuna to the collection. Thanks again mate👍👍👍
Wish I still had my SBBN007. Since bought the 033 version. Love it, and the hands more so. Strapcode makes a great bracelet for under $100. Do you know if the SBBN033 has the inhibit circuit? Never heard of that before. Great review. Thanks.
Hey Bruce, did you ask your watchmaker about the 7 bar rating on the crystal? Isn't that a 70m rating? Or does the rating of the crystal differ from that of the watch? For example, a 7 bar crystal would be ok for 700m watch?
I am confused on the lug to lug data. Previous gen (SBBN031) is listed with a case of 47.7 and 44.4mm lug to lug. This SBBN043 is listing at 48mm lug to lug and 49mm in many areas, one claiming to be a "Tuna Guide". Can anyone confirm this new model is indeed the same dimensions with the 44.4mm lug to lug? Thanks in advance!
I just received the 031 and I love the bracelet and The Marinemaster moniker on the dial. I personally feel compared to the previous generation you are getting less with the newer generation with lack of bracelet. The upgraded sapphire crystal does not warrant the increase in price with the newer generation over the 031 series. I am very happy with my 031 and feel this is the better choice. YMMV
Hello Bruce, thank you for your in-depth video. I haven’t yet seen a Seiko with a shroud feature in person and I have a question. Is the shroud separate from the case or is it an integrated feature. My thought was that if it’s not integral there would be a gasket that would prevent water and dirt getting trapped between the shroud and case. Can you explain to me how it’s designed? Thanks
Great watch and video. I had to smile about not the best looking. Neither am I but I am like old boots . Keep on munching life's miles up without hesitation. My face wouldn't win many awards but sod it.
This watch is a piece of horilogical history i remember roger moore wore this watch in for your eyes only and the spy that loved me it was out in 1975 its a great watch plus its so cool that seiko revived it but unfortunately its beyond my reach
@@BruceWilliams interesting. I have the Spring Drive Tuna and SBBN031. I could use either an Emperor or steel bezel tuna. P.S. don’t tell McMahan about it
I’m stuck between this and one of the mm300s. This is just over half the price and I’ve never owned a tuna, but having owned an older sbdx017 mm300 before I know I will love the newer updated version.
Hey Bruce. Love your videos. I think a better value than the Seiko Tuna is the Citizen Aqualand. Although it is only 200 meter WR and does not have a sapphire crystal it is ISO certified, has maximum depth memory, Rapid ascent alarm, auto start dive mode, anti magnetic to 4800 gauss and a power reserve indicator and can be purchased for less than a 1/3 of the price. Plus eco drive so no changing batteries.
Sucks no bracelet on this revision. This is a great watch. I would saw I like some of the newer models, I have enjoyed the new sumo a lot. The new Shogun looks bad ass
WAY too expensive in every aspect. Case finishing, movement... there is literally NOTHING that would justify the price. Imho there are a lot better Seikos out there considering value for money. Especially the really low end Seikos are still a great way to enter the hobby. But everything over 200-300 bucks needs to be carefully considered. Yes, there are still some great Seiko's up there but you really need to pick the right one. There are lots of alternatives around nowadays!
This makes me sad though. This is just a remake of the 037 with new hands and I guess new crystal(?). Not even sure if anything else has changed, such as movement. I love how they are making Tunas more accessible but I'm def not a fan of the much higher prices. Also why re-release? The 037 was perfect. it quite affordable, you could get one for ~1k USD brand new if lucky. Plus the quartz movement was already perfect in its own. They're never going to change it any way Also, why did they remove the Marinemaster subtext? it really helped the Tunas stand out. Now it feels like every other lower end prospex diver
If the regular tuna is too expensive but you like it’s aesthetics, then check out the Seiko Prospex Street Tuna (SNE535). It offers 200m WR, a solar quartz movement in an overall smaller size. I love the original Tuna but it does feel a bit utilitarian to me. The Baby Tuna, because it’s smaller, is just easier to wear on a daily basis. Plus, you can still them for about $300 on eBay.
Great video. I may just have to keep this one for awhile. Tuna is the only seiko worth buying today. 😉
100 percent this is the best Seiko diver in the current line up.
I thought everyone was over the moon with the renewed 62MAS watches?
Sadly there aren't many worth it anymore.
I bought two Flightys on Jomashop for $247 each, and two NDC straps. One will have the battery removed and get tucked away in the safe as a gift for my son, as he gets older. I've kicked around buying two more for graduation gifts for my nephews in the next decade. I have a feeling Seiko will redesign the Flighty and make it bigger. I had to act now.

I love my SBBN-031. I got my first Seiko in Bangkok in 1969. It was a world time watch.
I prefer the lacquer-looking dial on the previous model.

I have the latest black version of this as I have the blue SLA043 great watch great review Bruce 👍
Everything has risen in price over the last 5-10 years. The watch market is just catching up.
Hi Bruce can you please suggest if i should buy this one orSeiko
Prospex
SRPE31K1 this one. I really like the automatic movement.
I love the Tuna but I already has a Citizen Promaster 300m Diver! Seikos are too $$$ these days...
Thanks.
Bruce what is the difference between tourbillon and flaying turbillon
Hi Bruce, just picked up the seiko tuna s23633j1 love it looks great very similar to yours
Awesome watch and great video. Price is a bit prohibitive...
Have last years tuna very happy with it 😊
This might look good on a Staib mesh bracelet. Great watch.. miss the marine master print on the dial.
YMMV
I love my SBBN 031! Is it weird that I want a SBBN043 now?; (i.e., is it ok to have two Seiko Tunas)?
Hello Bruce, thank you for your in-depth video. I haven’t yet seen a Seiko with a shroud feature in person and I have a question. Is the shroud separate from the case or is it an integrated feature. My thought was that if it’s not integral there would be a gasket that would prevent water and dirt getting trapped between the shroud and case. Can you explain to me how it’s designed? Thanks
Great watch and video. I had to smile about not the best looking. Neither am I but I am like old boots . Keep on munching life's miles up without hesitation. My face wouldn't win many awards but sod it.
If you like the style of this it’s great value I would put the sumo as another one but yes seiko ain’t cheap anymore
Looks great but disappointed the domed crystal is gone.
Yes! I agree with you there!
I have the 031 with bracelet, love that watch!
can we purchase a S/S bracelet ??
SBBN043 or SBBN015? What would you go for?
I fail to notice where is blue the bluna...insert in certain lighting?
Awesome intro! Great Video!
Thanks Ronin!
This watch is a piece of horilogical history i remember roger moore wore this watch in for your eyes only and the spy that loved me it was out in 1975 its a great watch plus its so cool that seiko revived it but unfortunately its beyond my reach
Man I really want to get an SBBN031 while they’re still around on the web.... gotta scrape up some money 😂
If you like a hockey Puck that wears small, you should check out the Crepas Megamatic with crown at 9:00
Over $1000 for a quartz Tuna on a rubber strap? Hard pass
Go Wings!
Did you mention the watch size? I actually think you skipped it.
Pls review the new Tuna released this July. Thanks
I will buy this IF there becomes a bracelet option/model
I see there will be a steel bezel version that carries the bracelet from the last gen. Might have to get that one myself
Removing the marinemaster and replacing it with prospecs logo. Downgrade. I'm good with my sbbn031.
Tuna 7C46...1975?? I thought production started 1986?
The sharp edge series is good value as well. I love this watch, but not sure it’s a good buy for a quartz of that caliber.
Nice one!!
Even with the tar BEAT out of it,they still go for no less than 700US$ used
Also, what happened to the stepped dial?
BLUNA ---- awesome
Why i don’t see it on the website anymore?
I too love the Tuna’s
Mr.Bruce loyal to Seiko 👍
Sucks no bracelet on this revision. This is a great watch. I would saw I like some of the newer models, I have enjoyed the new sumo a lot. The new Shogun looks bad ass
Bruce, why don’t you review the Willard 2020 reissue? I’d love to watch what you think about that
My ADs never got any from Seiko. Seiko is restricting the supply. So I might not realistically get to them for a year or more
@@BruceWilliams Bruce buy one from gnomon and tell us what you think come on . That watch is easy enough to get !
@@zman8340 appreciate it, but over the years I've become loyal to my ads. It's worth it to me to wait
@@BruceWilliams well I get that I’m just busting your chops . But I mean you can’t buy a watch they don’t have !
I personally think the previous generation is better. I love my sbbn033!
The Seiko Tuna is a beautiful and macho watch but if I am paying $1400 for the Tuna I want it on a bracelet and with an automatic movement.
People are sleeping on the turtle
WAY too expensive in every aspect. Case finishing, movement... there is literally NOTHING that would justify the price. Imho there are a lot better Seikos out there considering value for money. Especially the really low end Seikos are still a great way to enter the hobby. But everything over 200-300 bucks needs to be carefully considered. Yes, there are still some great Seiko's up there but you really need to pick the right one. There are lots of alternatives around nowadays!
I liked the old hands. They were far less vanilla.
My favorite where the ones from two generations ago
This makes me sad though. This is just a remake of the 037 with new hands and I guess new crystal(?). Not even sure if anything else has changed, such as movement. I love how they are making Tunas more accessible but I'm def not a fan of the much higher prices. Also why re-release? The 037 was perfect. it quite affordable, you could get one for ~1k USD brand new if lucky. Plus the quartz movement was already perfect in its own. They're never going to change it any way
Also, why did they remove the Marinemaster subtext? it really helped the Tunas stand out. Now it feels like every other lower end prospex diver
New crystal, dial, bezel, crown, handset. Improved action. Higher price. Better package imo
Never understood the appeal of the tuna. Especially at the increased price.
Agree
You need to check one out in person. Its one of those you need to see to love
Then buy casio. If you become rich enough, you will find that Tuna is cheap
