This is the only time (so far) that Geoff sang harmony without showing duplicates of himself. He does not do acapella in his solo work. You don't need to like one better than the other. I love everything Geoff does, he is a master musician and craftsman. He released a new one last Friday and Voiceplay will release their new on next Friday. They are both wonderful!!
Geoff actually plays just about all of his backing tracks into his computer via a keyboard and/or plug ins, then programs/compiles it to all work together. He will spend hours searching for exactly the sound he wants. What's fun is that what you think you're hearing is often not what you expect to make the sound.
If this made you wanting to cry, I wonder what the latest from him would do to you. It was released Friday, and it's "I see fire" from "The Hobbit". And it's BEAUTIFUL. As you haven't yet, I'd suggest you check first his version of "Far over the Misty Mountains cold", for the "I see fire" video is kind of the "sequel" to that... Same characters, same costumes, same makeups. And yes, it's a "cosplay" video, and all the characters are Geoff (and Jeff, and Geoph, and Daryl...). I swear I'm watching all and every reaction to it that appears on the Tube, I watched the video to the point that I Know it by memory in detail, and I cry Every. Single. Time. 🥲 Just subscribed for more Geoff and Voiceplay. 🙂 See you next time!
Geoff doesn't do his solo work a capella, He has VP for that. He quite often plays piano or keybaord, (Shenandoah, Blackbird Till Then, High and Dry) or a keyboard using plugins for guitar sounds, strings, drums, etc, This way he is in control of every part of the work, arrnaging, singing, music, filming, editing, etc. He does get some help from other VP members occasionally, like Eli in lighting, Layne on steadycam, and of coursre his wife Kathy who manages the whole thing. :) Geoff frequently has me in tears, one way or another.
I don't know what it is about this particular song that makes people want to compare it with other covers. IMO they all stand on their own and it's just a matter of personal preference. (But I thank you for stopping with the covers you mentioned; there's another one I'm so sick of hearing about, it makes me want to bail out when a reactor brings it up.)

In his newest video, you will hear most of his ranges, from low bass to tenor. It's his cover of "I See Fire" and will make you cry.

He brings out the sadness of silence.
Tim has a version with Peter Hollins. Their cover of Greensleeves is amazing also.

Your video is messed up, all "stop action" and stuff, and video isn't moving.
Your screen went blank halfway through.
