In PTX's early days, after they lost that first recording contract just a week after winning it on _The Sing-Off,_ they would make videos of themselves singing together and post them to RUclips, where they built up enough of a following to eventually get another recording contract. Many of those early videos just showed five very young people sitting on a couch, the trio on the back of the couch with Avi and Kevin in front of them, singing their hearts out. *This* couch had to move, because it's taking them on a trip down Memory Lane, and that is the only self-reference in this video. Pentatonix loves Queen and they love "Bohemian Rhapsody," so they always wanted to cover this song, but they were afraid that they couldn't do it justice so they decided to wait until they were ready. That took five years, but they were right, they *were* ready. The starry night sky is in honor of Brian May, who has a doctorate in astrophysics. The four shooting stars are for the four members of Queen. The shot of the five of them lying on the couch is a reference to the cover art for Queen's _Sheer Heart Attack_ album. And when this came out, Brian May posted a link to it on all of his social media, with a single word comment: "Enjoy."
I was going to come here to say that very thing about the cover art. I had to look up which one it was cause I couldn't remember but yeah! Love this soooo much!
Something I hadn't thought of when I originally posted this comment, but have had pointed out to me elsewhere is that the moving couch is also a substitute for the car in _Wayne's World,_ where Wayne and Garth introduced a whole generation to "Bohemian Rhapsody" by playing the tape in the car's tape player.
@@sandrawalkerhaliburton1884 I've noticed that it's incredibly hard to find anything from Pentatonix that you remember having seen once, but didn't bookmark at the time. Any search term you put in is likely to be wrong. For instance, I ABSOLUTELY remember a video where Kirstie claims that she can sing higher than Mitch, but the only thing I can find in a search is the one where no one is sure, though Mitch says her whistle notes are better. And do you think you could find the video where the entire band demonstrates that they can do overtone singing, by searching on any of those terms? You can't, though I can give it to you because I saved it: ruclips.net/video/FKm5zNC-maE/видео.html The question about overtone singing starts at 17:11, which is part of the problem - it's just one item in a long interview. It can be incredibly frustrating; believe me, I know and sympathize, and I only discovered Pentatonix last September. Also, someone told me that there's a video of Mitch being totally astonished the first time someone explains the term "Mitch slap" to him. I would dearly love to see that, but I can't find it anywhere.
Mitch doesn't really need the megaphone to simulate a guitar solo..he does it live without the prop. Dr Brian May ( astrophysicist and lead guitar for Queen) loved the cover and posted on his social media, saying "Enjoy!" Not sure how familiar you are with Pentatonix...you obviously know who Avi is, but I'm not sure if you know the rest of the group. Scott Hoying is the tall blond guy, he's a baritone. Mitch Grassi is the lead in this, a dark-haired male and a counter tenor. Kirstin ( Kirstie) Maldonado is the only girl and she's a mezzo soprano. Avi Kaplan is the bass ( Avi left the group in 2017 and Matt sallee joined in 2018) and then there's the awesome Kevin Olusola...beatboxer... cellist, sax and keyboard player ( at concert level).... and tenor. Maybe you'd like to check out Sound of Silence, Daft Punk, Love Again ( original), Shallow, New Rules/Are You That Somebody, Evolution of Michael Jackson.
The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC! Mitch might be the reincarnation of Freddie Mercury. Freddie died in November 1991 and Mitch was born in July 1992. He can also grow the Freddie mustache. It is so close to matching it is kinda creepy.
I was also just about to make the very same comment - I truly believe that Mitch is a reincarnated Freddie Mercury - his looks, his sound, the coincidence that Freddie died a year before Mitch was born and just like he's channeling so hard Freddie vibes in this it is sooooo perfect!
@@Masq1980 If you go back 9 months from when Mitch was born to when he was conceived, Mitch would have been conceived in October if he was a full term baby.
@@danielcarter837 there's probably a lot of factors if you do believe in Reincarnation. If it is a thing, we don't know anything about the inner workings of any of that only speculation - whether or not Mitch was a full term baby..and like, at what point does an actual soul enters a body...it is at conception or does it happen with the actual birth..
It took them years to perfect this. This project was intimidating. Avi's college training was for opera singing. I just subbed. Have you heard any of the songs from their new Christmas album, "Holidays Around the World"? EPIC!!!! Give them a listen.
Avi's voice you can't miss it ........ have you checked out his solo work? OMG utterly amazing. Change on the Rise is his most popular, his latest album is the Shooter Jennings produced Floating on a Dream. Studio recordings are perfect then he recut 2 for The 7 Layer Sessions acoustically in a church ib The Netherlands and 4 he redid Live at Sunset Sound each one perfect in its own way!
I just love you!! You’re so cool and beautiful. PTX has made a career out of covering, and in most cases, upgrading songs. That said, they have some incredible originals as well. I suggest you start with Pentatonix volume one. If you like Christmas music, you are in the presence of royalty. Start with “Mary Did You Know “, one of their best. You’ll probably want to hear the song that won them the first of three Grammy awards; Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. If you like hip-hop try Can’t Hold Us by Macklemore. You have a wondrous journey ahead, I’ll go with you and we will be part of the family of Pentaholix. ❤
I recommend any and everything by SuperFruit, which is a separate RUclips channel Scott and Mitch had for things Pentatonix didn't want to do on their official channel. Mostly they used as a vlog. They'd do interviews, live feeds where they'd answer fan questions, stuff like that, but they also did some very funny stuff. In the category of Funny, I recommend their Frozen Medley (featuring Kirstie Maldonado), 99 Ways to Ditch Your Date, and GUY.EXE. GUY.EXE was an official video for an album they put out, but the others are just them being funny. Except for GUY.EXE, any funny stuff you find on SuperFruit's channel you should stick around after the obvious end to catch their blooper reel. And then there's serious. After the Pulse massacre in 2016, SuperFruit got together with three friends of theirs who are also both wonderful singers and members of the LGBTQ+ community to put out a cover of Katy Perry's "Rise." Very powerful, and very empowering. Be sure to read their description, where they dedicate it to their fans who "love unconditionally and see no barriers."
They worked for 5 years arranging and setting up the visuals for this video. Worth the wait. But you should DEFINITELY go watch Angelina Jordan deconstruct this Queen classic, and arrange it as a jazz riff. She was 13 when she performed it for simon on the champions edition of AGT. She won Norways got talent when she was 7. She is nearly grown now, and will mold the face of music potentially for the next half century. Her voice will change you.
The megaphone wasn't turned on. Mitch saw it lying around on the set and thought it would make a cool prop and it's been confusing people ever since.
