    Great video on the 30 Super Carry. That Nighthawk is truly an impressive piece. But one thing I would like to point out, don’t drop the slide on an empty chamber of a 1911 with a tuned trigger. The pistol is designed with the resistance of stripping a round off of the magazine to slow down the slide as it goes into battery. Doing so on an empty chamber can batter the sear and possibly lead to hammer follow. It’s not much of an issue for striker fired or guns with GI triggers, but it’s generally not a good practice. There’s no good reason to do it but avoiding doing it can preserve your finely tuned trigger.

      Thank you very much for the kind words and compliments, I agree in full with you while doing it a few times I have been assured won't hurt things but there is certainly no need for it. If you don't have to do it don't do it! This was done only for demonstration purposes only and I probably should have been more clear on that. If you check the timestamp of 10:48 you'll catch me cringing at dropping the slide for the same reasons you mentioned. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

I thought that you demonstrated about as many loads as reasonably possible. I'm interested in the 85 gr. loads at a higher velocity. You answered a lot of questions. Keep up the good work.

    It has to be said, with all possible emphasis, extrapolating and creating load data is for EXPERTS ONLY. The vast majority of us have no business at all trying something like that at home.
    Having said that, what a beautiful handgun. The build quality and precise feel really do have to be experienced to understand. Alas, they are well out of my budget.
    Interesting cartridge. The velocities were less than I expected for a cartridge running such terrific pressure. That pressure is what gives me, personally, the shivers. Small case capacities and charges are so sensitive to variation. Not a cartridge for me but, an interesting option for others, especially if sticking to factory ammo.
    Well done video as always.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  Год назад

      Indeed that is why there is extra warnings in this video and statements about how the data was developed. It is not an easy thing to do and the mathematics and time it takes is simply astounding, It took 3 months of testing and calculations to come up with the limited loads we used. If you have any doubt in your mind it is better to air on the side of caution and wait for reputable data to come along.
      Indeed I was very impressed with the quality and construction of the firearm. They are expensive but you certainly do get what you pay for, I wish I knew how many man hours went into this gun to get it to where it is.
      Indeed it is a very interesting cartridge, I was a bit surprised by the velocities as well, I was also trying to be as conservative as possible with most of these loads. Indeed that is the primary reason why I picked the 1911 for this testing I know how much pressure it would take for that system to have a catastrophic failure and I certainly wanted the strength in material to be there for this testing. Indeed in that regard it is not as bad as the 5.7x28 but it is sensitive and once you hit pressure the jump or spike in pressure going further is very drastic. It is nice to have options that is what separates us from many of the other countries. I personally never want to see that go away.
      Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! Your continued support is appreciated! --Jeremiah

      I go back and forth on it a few times certainly won't hurt it and I think it also depends on the 1911 as well. A lot of folks I respect say not to do it. Bill Wilson of Wilson Combat has a video on it with Ken Hackathorn and they say not to do it. You can't seem to win for loose on these things and to be honest I don't build these 1911s and so I am not the most knowledgeable person on the subject and I'll be the first to admit that. I just try to do what is right and what is best, to the best of my knowledge.
      It is an interesting cartridge, there is so much love and hate surrounding it I don't really understand that. Which is why we did this video, we wanted to present the facts to folks. Hopefully we did a good job at that. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment. I feel it adds a lot of value to the comments section. --Jeremiah

    a barnes 75 gr or 60gr would be a very interesting load. Maybe with autocomp powder. I would be willing to send a case of ammo with these bullets so it can be removed and used. One of your best videos. Nice to see your load development. I would love to get a 30 SC to experiment with but will wait until a lower priced 1911 like a Ruger 1911 is available. Given its lineage from 30 Pederson/7.5 French Long but with higher pressure it reminds me of a shorter 30 carbine round and would be great in a Mini 14 or M1 carbine like rifle.

    Great video, thank you for making and being one of the first 30SC reloading pioneers. I'm not sure if this will be helpful, but on another forum a member did some quickload estimates for .30SC, using the .32 S&W Long loaded to .30SC OAL as the basis of the estimates. It suggests the 115gr could go all the way up to 1300fps+ when loaded to 50kpsi using 5.9gr of Power Pistol. It will be interesting to see where 30SC ends up.

      No problem thank you for the feedback and taking the time to comment! We greatly appreciate that! I think you would be hard pressed to get 1,300 FPS with a 115 grain bullet considering the 100 grain stuff starts to hit pressure around the 1,300 FPS mark with most of the powders I tried. That is interesting though I would love to investigate that more in the future. It will be very interesting to see where it winds up. I wanted to get this video out there as quickly as possible because there is so much opinion about it and I wanted to present just the facts and the hard data from actual testing not my opinion. @@HandloaderTV Thanks for getting back to me Jeremiah. Once again I appreciate you making the video. Whats interesting is that before it was released, 30 Super Carry was patented by Federal as 8mm Super Carry, with a 50kpsi spec, and notably 100gr x 1350fps. Its clear they've lowered the pressure now for factory ammo, no doubt to reduce recoil and blast from a subcompact. But for that sweet Nighthawk with a 5" barrel, I think it would be cool to see just how fast they can go, similar to the old 7.62x25 Tokarev loads. Curious what Quickload will show you; especially for the 85 and 100gr XTP. Heres the original patent specs : i.ibb.co/M1ybYMF/30-super-carry-patent.jpg

    Something I've been pretty curious to see is how .30SC performs loaded with very light .32 ACP oriented projectiles, although I suppose it's possible results wouldn't be all that stellar.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  Год назад

      I would have loved to get my hands on more projectiles but sadly these days it's tough to do so without breaking the bank! I think it would be interesting but based on my limited load development you don't gain that much velocity before hitting pressure even with the lighter bullets of course I only went as light as 85 grains compared to 100 grain projectiles so it is hard to say. It would be interesting to test though and I am sure this gun, the accuracy would have been more than acceptable. Thanks for watching! --Jeremiah

    I've been waiting for buffalo bore and underwood to come out with a 30 SC+p+ with maybe ultra fast burning powders,
    As your the only one I've seen hand loading do you think that with a pistol like the Smith and wesson shield plus performance centre with a 4" barrel with the most powerful fast burning powder this round can produce over 500fpe thanks

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  Год назад +1

      I don't think that they'll be a +P+ loading for this cartridge anytime soon sadly, there is very little data out there as it is. Hopefully that changes but for now I think it may be a while before that gets better. I don't think that this cartridge is capable of pushing 100 grain bullet to equal 500 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle. That would require a muzzle velocity of over 1,500 feet per second, which is over 250 feet per second faster than the factory ammunition. You may be able to get close with lighter bullets and faster burning powder but you can't avoid the pressure problem. The cartridge is already operating at a high pressure and you certainly don't want to exceed that. Great question though, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! --Jeremiah

    It occurred to me that I should say, why I'm so curious about “quick load” and how to develop loads for pistols and weapons that do not have ammo or load data available for them. I have a couple of pistols that I have not been able to fire due to no ammo available and no load data available. I have a Steyr-Mannlicher 1905 that fires the 7.65 Mannlicher cartridge I've not been able to fire. Not only that, but I've owned it for over 3 years now and have only recently been able to acquire the loading dies and brass to be able to build the cartridges, if I can find the loading data for them. I also have a pair of Steyr Hahn Model 1911's I need load data for. The ammo (when I can find it) is like buying gold!! (9mm Steyr) I've passed on a couple of French pistols because of the inability to acquire .32 French Long. (breaks my heart!) I sure could use some help, please.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  Год назад

      Quickload can help with that, but I would suggest you get intimately familiar with it first. Try it with some known loads and velocity to make sure you are making correct inputs into the program. It is great for that application in the fact that there is simply no other programs out there that can do that other than Gordon's reloading tool. But you still need data to compare it to and you need at the very least some pressure tested data in a case that is similar and you will need a chronograph to keep that velocity in check. I also suggest having an understanding of components and pressure and the relationship between them. It will help you greatly in selecting powders and things of that nature. Knowing the strength of your handgun also helps. I personally like a safety factor of 100% to no less than 50% depending on the results I am getting. Meaning that my max pressure is that much percentage wise below what would blow up the gun. Variation in velocity can be quite wild in some cartridges and that creates a built in safety factor. If you have ammo I would highly suggest pulling the bullet and inspecting and weighing the powder this can greatly help you especially if you understand how powder burns. I would also suggest choreographing it so you have a baseline to extrapolate from. I know it is a lot of work but it can be done you just have to be extremely careful, you do not want to blow up a gun. Once you do it safely the work is very rewarding though. I hope this helps you and it all makes sense. Thank you for watching! --Jeremiah

    the round is great, but the fact that it is a full size pistol is a bit ridiculous. The round was literally made for carry pistols... and they made a full size pistol for the initial release? They would have had more sales and less people scratching their heads if they would have at least put it in a 4inch barrel with no grip safety. If it wasn't so annoying that they clearly made it for cool factor and not for practical use, Id be praising them as I purchase one of my own. Companies need to focus more on practical use and what customers want.

    • @HandloaderTV
      @HandloaderTV  Месяц назад +1

      I understand your point, the main reason why we went with a full size handgun is because we were the first people to develop handloads for the 30 Super Carry, we wanted the larger gun simply because if something went wrong then we would have a little more margin of error with more material around the chamber. I really don't think the 30 Super carry every took off in spite of so many big names supporting it. I don't think anyone wanted something smaller than a 9mm for defense especially when they are buying the same size handgun as a 9mm. Support for the cartridge itself was very limited with very few firearms manufacturers actually wanting to chamber it in their guns. The high chamber pressure was also a deterrent as well as the lack of handloading components. I think when you factor all of these things together that is what made the cartridge fail. If I were to own one myself I would certainly want a more compact option as well but on the other hand it's hard to compete with the other already established cartridges. So there were a lot of contributing factors out there that lead to the downfall of the 30 Super. Thanks for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts about the cartridge we greatly appreciate it! --Jeremiah
