I went thru BUDs with class 249 in the winter of 2003. I got rolled Wed AM of HellWeek and quit afterwards I was so pissed. I was rolled for a major leg issue and was later diagnosed with a stress fracture among other issues and med discharged. I was in San Diego on this rainy day in 2004 you speak of, suffering. BAD. When I came home I got into the drug game, selling and using crystal meth. It stole my 20's. I went thru 5 jobs, wrecked several cars and got 2 chicks pregnant. I completely bottomed out on life. I hit reset at age 30, when thru a year long recovery program, went back to school on my GI Bill and became a Nurse. Got a job in the emergency room and started my own business. Been sober almost 10 years. These videos really resonate with me. Starting back at the bottom has been a major them in my life but you're right. It's a chance to reinvent yourself.

Wednesday of hellweek is extremely impressive.
I found myself getting unexpectedly discharged on processing my day-4 in bootcamp for “fraudulent enlistment” as a direct result of doing what my recruiter said when he told me “just say no about that part” on one of the boxes on my medical questionnaire while I was sitting across from him at his desk filling it out.
22 days of “service” on my DD214…

That's a horrible episode to get to Wednesday morning, get injured, get rolled out...and then discharged! I was in 187, and I couldn't get past Monday night. So, I know what a milestone just getting to Tuesday morning is, must less Wednesday morning! I had to go back to the fleet and to the ship. It sucked, and I went through some personal trials, ended up in captain's mast, and almost got killed in a car crash. But I got through. Congratulations on coming back from your brush with the abyss! Not getting through BUD/S sucks because it takes everything you have....so much focus, so much training, so much preparation, and so much work fixing your deficiencies....only to be spit back out on the street or have your @$$ kicked back to the fleet. Then, it's like, "Ok, now what? What do I do now? Where do I go from here?" It's super easy to get lost in life at that point. I think most BUD/S Duds do well eventually, but it's not easy. Having to go back to a 9 to 5 life SUCKS!!!!!!!

@@hemplife666 When I was young, my dad hit rock bottom and attempted suicide. He actually pulled a rifle on two police officers. To this day, I don't know why they didn't shoot him, but they did beat the $#!t out of him before throwing him in jail where he faced a possible long prison sentence. Long story short, he came back, straightened his life out, started his own business, and made a lot of money. Life is actually quite a precious gift, and you need to hang onto it for as long as you can. If you make it back, and I believe you can, you could really be of help to someone down the road who is suffering. This world has no shortage of suffering people, and it's only getting worse. Do not give up!

I remember starting at the bottom again. I was in the Navy for 12 years, working on F-18's, First Class Petty Officer, running a shop. Then I was a civilian, lost. I was trying to unf&ck the civilian world and failing miserably. I was institutionalized and didn't even know it. It took all the grit I could muster to get out of that hole. Thanks, shipmate!

You touched on a Buddhist saying that, "acceptance is the end of suffering". I love this wisdom and it has helped me many times to accept my circumstances and allows me to move forward. Its saying, "ok I'm up to my neck in shit...I see and accept that..." It's time to dig out and move on don't waste time bitching about the shit just dig your way out or die trying.

I was an Air Dept Div O on CVN-74 during OEF. There was a squadron enlisted guy that was cranking, but he only got to clean out shitters in Officer Country...never saw him in the mess. Talk about a miserable fuck with a bad attitude. He was super-pissed because he signed on to be a helicopter mechanic and the only equipment he got to touch was a swab and a big yellow cadillac.
I tried to encourage him and give him some perspective whenever I bumped into him swabbing out the head. I doubt what I said ever helped, but 3 months after my last conversation with him, I saw him in the hangar bay on top of one of his squadrons helos wrenching on something. He looked like a completely different dude. He was smiling and had a MUCH better attitude.
I stopped and congratulated him for graduating away from that fucking cadillac he was constantly wrestling with, to fixing helicopters. He thanked me and said with a HUGE grin, "I finally figured out why the Chief only let me scrub shitters...it's because I hated scrubbing shitters." Hard lesson, but wisdom earned.

I left the Australian Regular Army as a Military Police Corporal. I went back to my old Army Reserve unit, University of NSW Regiment, which was an officer training unit. Due to some army error I was back to being a private and subject to the whims of 20 year old college students with temporary rank as cadet officers. One day I was placing a field grade officer under arrest, the next (virtually) I was being told to clean the toilets. I just looked at this rooster, said 'Yes Sir!' and gave him the cleanest shitter he ever laid eyes on. He was expecting me to spit the dummy but I'd been messed about by real soldiers, professionals, for nearly ten years. Amateurs like him didn't bother me. It was humbling, though. Keep it coming.

    TCAV,
So very true. I, like you, made a mess of my life and lost everything. First couple years I resisted and made my misery worse.
It wasn't until I accepted the facts, assessed my thought process, and took responsibility for my life, that things changed. Once change got going it just took off and now I am happier, better and wealthier than I ever was.
Yes! Loosing everything can absolutely be a blessing to the lucky few who by the use of pain and loss, begin to understand that they alone are the architects of their own misery, and by extension, their only possible remedy.

TCAV ain't gay, trans, or Black enough to get a Netflix deal and honestly, it's for the best. They'd take his life story and make it a message about his "toxic masculinity" and that the existence of men like him and orgs like the FFL were "indicators that there is still much work to do in implementing a progressive and compassionate democratic world" and if they didn't race and gender swap his character, he'd end up shooting himself after "masculinity failed him" and that he might've lived and been an LGBT ally were he raised by a "strong, brave feminist single mother".
No, Netflix would ruin all the value TCAV offers because they're not about making entertainment, they're about pushing sufficiently tolerable sociopolitical messaging.
      TCAV don't need Netflix.

Sometimes failure can be looked at as another opportunity for success. It took me a while to realize that. Self discipline is absolutely essential for success. It looks like you are living a life of self discipline and fulfillment. There are power in your words. Speak it, and it will be done. As long as you believe in it. I think your story embodies that line of thinking. Keep it coming! This is inspirational! Much respect!

Outstanding message. Ralph Waldo Emerson… that’s who you echo here, too. That genius talked about trusting the “mystic officials” that put the people around you that are meant for you. That you need. There’s some truth to this. Have a good one, TCAV. 🤙🏽

@@tcavofficial I’ll try to find the essay it was from. Emerson was brilliant. Also, I worked for a Seal 2001-2003 and he was from Britain. Entered our Navy in the 70s. He was a solid man. I remember many times I’d go in his office he’d be studying French and anytime other pilots from France would drop into our flightline he’d task me with picking them up sometimes. He loved France. I think he retired there, not sure. Those years we were stationed in Naples. Major growing up years for me. I was just becoming a husband and dad. My daughter was diagnosed with autism. Very challenging, but some of the things you talk about, having these mental tools to develop a better mindset and frequency, really do help. People should pay close attention. 🤙🏽

It is not the part of men, but of fanatics … to say that the shortness of life considered, it is not worth caring whether for so short a duration we were sprawling in want or sitting high. Since our office is with moments, let us husband them. Five minutes of today are worth as much to me as five minutes in the next millennium. Let us be poised, and wise, and our own, today. Let us treat the men and women well; treat them as if they were real; perhaps they are… Without any shadow of doubt, amidst this vertigo of shows and politics, I settle myself ever the firmer in the creed that we should not postpone and refer and wish, but do broad justice where we are, by whomsoever we deal with, accepting our actual companions and circumstances, however humble or odious as the mystic officials to whom the universe has delegated its whole pleasure for us. If these are mean and malignant, their contentment, which is the last victory of justice, is a more satisfying echo to the heart than the voice of poets and the casual sympathy of admirable persons.”

Taylor my dude. Great topic had to pull over in my truck listening to this. I think it’s odd but really fascinating how we write the chapters in our book. I used to say I hate my life I’m no good all that stuff. Until I forced myself to look in the mirror and forgive myself. It felt so good. To not be mad at me for having to start over. I always say when I speak to recovering addicts or guy in jail. You can ashamed of your decisions but you cannot be ashamed of who you are. Those poor decisions don’t define us they are just chapters in the book of us. The book doesn’t even stop when we die because our legacy and the stuff we do right now will stand the test of time. Keep writing your story be humble be helpful be a hero that doesn’t need a cape or superpower. Awesome wake up this morning. Been waiting since 4am to listen to this in the truck. Thanks my dude.

I keep coming back to this particular video, it got me thinking far and wide to what am i supposed to do, I'm still intending to join the legion though, been planning for it and preparing my physiques to my best performance and cleaning up my system.
This brings back my old habits that I've lost 5 years ago, back then i could run a 10km marathon with no sweat but now getting back to it I can't even finnish 10 rounds on the running track 😅 but i know progress doesn't come instantly I've learned that years ago, that gave me purpose and I'm not planning on backing out, not now.

I have to say bro, for those who see a tough, tattooed, brash guy like yourself and think you're probably just another shallow narcissist, couldn't be further from the truth. You have an insight and perspective that can only come from having been at the bottom and have climbed your way out. Plus, you have a down to earth, no nonsense way of putting out the things you have learned along the way. Its a great combination for those who can learn from you.
