For this discussion video, we will be talking about one of the most controversial topic in Philippine History. The Site of the First Catholic Mass in the Philippines has been one of the most debated topics involving historians, locals and the religious faithful. Let us try to discuss each side in order to help us understand why it took 500 years before a decision was made.

Holy Thursday is also a big celebration of the church. Almost equivalent to Passover of the Jews. When Magellan sent his troops to Butuan with Padre Balderama, there is a probability that they celebrated the first Mass in Masao Island before they returned to Limasawa where they celebrated another Mass on Easter Sunday.

The Mojares Panel (2020), sinabi nila na "First Easter Sunday Mass" ang naganap sa Limasawa Island. Kaya Saludo sa'yo sir sa pagsasabi sa katanungan na baka may mga mass pang nauna na hindi natin alam. Kaya mas okay naring tawaging First Easter Sunday Mass of 1521.

Sir goodday po can i ask po if what is your view on the claim made by Congresswoman Ching Plaza that the first mass wa held in Butuan and not in Limasawa?
Hi! She probably wanted to fight for their Mazaua claim since obviously, she is from Agusan Del Norte which is the province that includes Butuan. Ultimately, their claim was denied by NHI in 1998 when they still sided with Limasawa and finally also in 2021. Nevertheless, her efforts gave way for experts to conduct research and hopefully we can still come up with solid evidence about its exact location because I think so far, the dispute in this issue is still debatable.

@@joannaflores3286 Hi! As far as National Historic Commission is concerned, Limasawa ang site of the first mass. Pero if original designated site of the first mass, it is Masao.

@@ali_beeeeeee I think magkasabay nmn sila dhl magkasama po sila. Its just that mas detailed ang naipublish n journal ni Pigafetta kya naging major source ito. Wala nmn actually nabanggit na misa sa sinulat ni Albo pero nabanggit dun na naglagay sila ng cross sa island na fit sa description ng limasawa
1324 ginanap ang unang misa sa Bolinao Pangasinan.
That is one of the claims outside of Limasawa and Masao. But apparently, reknowned historians like William Henry Scott stated that this claim could be false due to Pangasinan's location. Hopefully more historical records and evidence can be found to make it clear and have finality.
