The debate about the retraction of Jose Rizal has been a very controversial topic both in the academe and within history enthusiasts. We will attempt to review and analyze the primary sources that will lead us to the evidences of the existence of the alleged retraction of Jose Rizal.

I guess every detail about the last day of Jose Rizal can be considered as a fact except for the retraction part since it is still disputed today. For me the closest one that can lead you to the facts about the retraction is the cuerpo de vigilancia report which could be watched in this video

Just like with Rafael Palma, he did not believe the retraction. He questioned the real intention of Balaguer who Coates thinks that he only wanted to gain popularity and attention. He also doubted if the marriage to Josephine really took place and how much the retraction would damage Rizal's reputation. He also think that the retraction did not happen because Rizal was denied Catholic burial which was supposed to happen if he retracted. Coates also suggest that ifcthe retraction really took place, Teodora Alonzo should have been informed by Rizal before he was killed.

Sir tanong ko lang po kung bakit sa 1st main argument is Fr. Balaguer and Fr. Pi yung pangalan ng Pari, tapos nung sa claim na ng cuerpo agent, naging Fr. March and Villaclara na yung name nila. Sana po masagot💞
Ayan din yung babasag sa statement ni Balaguer. If the Cuerpo report is true, Balaguer possibly based his statements on the testimonies from March and Villaclara and maybe he wanted to take credit for himself

Para sa akin kasi mahirap pa sagutin. I am still waiting for the retraction letter to be once again publicly available and be reexamined by the experts using current technology to verify if it was indeed Rizal's handwriting.

I think it convenient to point out that when the Archbishop sent his commission to the Ateneo, he remarked that, in case of conversion, before ministering the Sacraments to him, Dr. Rizal should make a retraction of errors publicly professed to him in words and writings and a profession of the Catholic faith. To this effect, when the Father Superior of the Mission went to the Archbishop's Palace, he brought by way of precaution a retraction and profession of faith, concise, but including what he thought out to be extracted from Dr. Rizal. The Prelate read it, and declared it to befficient. He said, however, that he would prepare or order to prepare another more extensive one.
@@sevillejoappleclairej.2744 To make this simple, The Archbishop of Manila ordered that Balaguer should convince Rizal to return to Catholicism. However, for it to happen, Rizal need to retract. Fr. Pio Pi then constructed a retraction letter by the orders of the Archbishop and hand it to Balaguer when he went to the Archbishop before proceeding to the fort and meet Rizal.

Hi! The statement of thr cuerpo and Fr. Balaguer are similar in stating that both claimed Jose Rizal participated n Catholic ceremonies like praying and attending the mass. Both also claimed that the retraction was signed by Rizal.

@@domalantareychel2072 base sa video, si Father Pio Pi ang nagsulat ng mas maikli at concise na retraction. pero may minor adjustments pa din na ginawa si Rizal, though. the significance of his retraction is to let the public know that he is retracting all of the things that he said against the church, and is renouncing his catholic faith.

Hi! thank you for watching! Those that you mentioned are part of the anti retraction sentiments from those who question its authenticity. The supposed retraction only came out decades after his death and only a few was able to examine it.

I think sa ngayon, wala nmn po except it gave us different perspective about Rizal and the topic provided us something to get interested with in history. Whether he retracted or not, his legacy and contribution towards Philippine Nationalism is already established.
