- This is part 1 of my two-part video on Masao-Limasawa controversy. The contention here is that Pigafetta's latitude of Mazua (9 degrees and 2/3) was mistranslated. The contention is not originally mine, but I firmly believed in it. I just can't remember who originally advanced it, but I believed that the Limasawa quin centennial was a million-peso mistake.
I want to express my gratitude to you Sir, this is indeed very helpful and an eye opener for me, in addition that we will be tackling about the said controversy on our next Phil. History class.

I am really amazed at how you make an important topic/discussion more lively and understandable for us students. I was really curious about where the First Mass was actually held. In the group activity that you made us do, the criteria that you gave were almost present in both of the said locations. But with conducting proper research and with the guidance of your discussions, I firmly believe that the First Mass happened in Butuan. To put my thoughts in a nutshell, with the right primary, and even secondary sources, pinpointing the real location of the said event was undeniably logical because there were pieces of information that needs to be distinguished correctly due to its presence in different locations. And, I think that in the next generations, this topic can possibly have another discussion and another stand.

I totally agree with the arguments that you are trying to pin-point. It does make sense that the fraction has nothing to do with the minutes because Pigafetta wrote a minute in Spanish. It makes me desperately believe that the first mass really happened in Butuan due to its evidences.

Hi Sir! I am Zyd Esguerra of 1H1, already done watching the video and it enlightened me more why should I stand with the answer of our group last meeting just by the criteria given. Now, looking at different approach and criteria, I totally agree with your argument why you came up with Butuan being the place where the first mass was held, not only that but given the primary sources laid to us it supports the idea more. There was a confusion regarding the direction stated by Pigafetta that holds the issue until now, but going more profound it was really mistranslated the reason why people assumed that it is in Limasawa but it's really far from it. To end my discernment, there are really lots of factors to be considered, criteria to look into. However, it doesn't stop there we have to scrutinize them to get the right information from the primary resources provided.

how to explane this part from mazava they sailed northwards again towards seilani. they followed the coast of seilani in a northwesterly direction, ascending up to 10 degrees of latitude where they saw three small islands. from there they sailed westwards someten leagues, and there they saw three islets,where they dropped anchor for the night. in the morning they sailed southwest some 12 leagues, down to a latitude of 10 and one-third degree. there they entered a channel betweentwo islands, one of which was called "matan" and the other "subu."
You cannot sail upward towards Seilani (Leyte) if you are in Limasawa, because Limasawa is already at the side of Seilani.

hello po, sir! I'm from 1H1 po. Regarding Antonio Pigafetta's version, my takeaway is that I strongly believe that the first mass really happened in Butuan because other than the given evidences in Butuan, I still hold on to the fact that there were statues of Magellan from the first mass, which really strengthens the fact that the first mass happened in Masao. Because it has to have a significance in order for the statue to be built, if the mass didn't happen there, how would one explain that the First Mass happened in Limasawa and not Butuan? Plus the fact that the Americans were the ones who decided that in the celebration of the 400 years since the first mass, they would move the said first mass in Limasawa rather than Butuan which were it originally happened, which gives us the loop that it was clearly stated that they wanted to the mass to be moved in Limasawa when it actually happened in Masao on 1521. Not only that, the Limasawa also loses by the fact that there was a slight mistranslation on Antonio Pigafetta's about the 9 degrees and 2/3. So, I believe that after tons of evidences there is about the first mass happening in Butuan, I strongly believed that it happened in Butuan.

Presence of Balangays in Masao, Butuan, nabanggit kasi ni Pigafetta they saw boats called balangays. Presence of gold, rice fields in Masao, Butuan, nabanggit ito lahat ni Pigafetta, wala ito sa Limasawa. Finally, the King of Butuan and Mazaua, according to Pigafetta are brothers, it is against human experience if one is in Mindanao and the other is in Visayas.
