DIY Sump Pump - No More Water in Basement

- This is my DIY sump pump install I did a few weeks back after getting a lot of water on my basement floor. I figured out where the water was coming from and put this in place for any future water drainage/runoff issues.
The Plexiglas cover is a great idea to be able to monitor the pit at a glance.
Thanks! That was what I thought too. No need to take a cover off, just take a peek and move on with my day! Haha
I agree on the plexiglas. Love the rocks too. Square shape is nice too, lol. But no blanket/wrap around the bucket to keep any sand out? 64yr old granny looking at having to fix this a sad little pit in this house I bought, built in 1900. I'm not even sure a 5 gall bucket will fit. But I'll have to do something. Who can afford official help these days. Little pit has standing water in it, noticed it today. I quarantee anything I do wont be this nice looking! :)
Idk if you’ve ever been to hibachi but they have that little toy that is a guy pulling down his pants to spray sake… well anyway that’s how my foundation looked last night. I’m outta my mind rn, gotta do something like this. Good video man. Thanks.

Thanks! It has been one of the best things I've installed, haven't gotten any water and we had a lot of rain recently, ran for 2 days instead of me getting an inch of water!
Did you ever install a check valve above the pump to avoid backflush and constant pump running? How is that plastic holding up?
Yes I did I have the check valve with a weep hole angled down at a 45, the plastic has held up great, nothing looks worn and we are getting torrential downpours as I type this for 2 days now, not a drop, and it's flooding all around me haha.

@@SamsDIY What is that about, check valve and weep hole? (thank goodness for youtube university!)
@@mfb6310 the check valve is just a one way flapper valve that allows water to discharge out, but not flow backwards back into the pit through the pump, after a pump cycle. The weep hole is a hole drilled at a downward 45 degree angle UNDER the check valve on the discharge pipe, to prevent airlock of the pump, which would lock it up because air becomes trapped in the pump housing. @@SamsDIY Yes it does! Thank you. I tried to learn more but I was getting lost in plumber maze of info. I went 'shopping' online to get a visual, then checked mine downstairs - I don't have one installed. I think I can fix that though! There's an abandoned pipe that is coming in from outside but it was cut off about 4' above the sump pit, and the drain pipe is being redirected from a very rusty looking pump straight into the sewer pipes - which is not to code, right? Tsk Tsk. I'll cut that off, replace the pump, pipe into a check valve and reconnect to the outside.
And good copy on that 45 downward angle! Under the check valve! Thank you So much!! LOL Just need to nerve up now!
It looks like you did run the pipe all around the basement? I just ask to learn for myself.
I didn't run any pipe along the foundation, it is gravel underneath my slab and water will move sideways before it moves up, so I went to where water was coming up over the slab at the low point in the basement, and started digging there. I lined the sump with 3/4" stone around the outside with 1/2" holes with a screen so it wouldn't disturb any of the earth under my slab. This was a simple solution for my situation, and it can be done by anyone. It also didn't cost me more then $30 on parts and the initial cost of the sump pump which was $189.00 if I remember correctly. Hope this helps!

What is the elevation of the discharge ... and what motor does the pump have ? 1/2 or 1/4 ?
Elevation is probably 7 to 8 feet, and it is a 1/2 HP motor.
@@SamsDIY my backyard basin is 14'' high (with a 13'' pump in it) and it rests in a "hole" I dug out and the outlet (40 feet away) only elevates about 3 feet, so I imagine a 1/2 pump will do the job ?
@@AZTEC_ARTS2023 Yeah I would have to think that'd be plenty. Mine pumps pretty fast, around a gallon per second I believe, and has no problem doing so.
Where is the weep hole and what is it for?
The weep hole is under the cover on the outlet pipe, before the check valve, drilled at a downward 45 degree angle. It is to prevent airlock in the pump, which would prevent it from working.
My check valve is new and SOMETIMES water will just leak back down making my pump keep running every 30-40 seconds or so. Is there a way to put a pipe kind of like underneath the kitchen sink to keep the water from going all the way back down to bucket?
@@johnnyk22 that shouldn't be happening. The flap opens when water pushes on it in one direction, it shuts when the flow stops and tries to go back in the other direction from gravity after the pump shuts off. Are you sure it's leaking by the check valve or is the sump just filling back up really fast? Also if you are referring to the "U" shaped peatrap under the sink, that is not to stop water flow, just any smell that might come up through the pipes. It keeps it full with water so air cannot move past.
It’s leaking from the check valve because if I lift the pump up when it stops, I can see a bunch of water coming back down.
@@johnnyk22 does it seem like it's the full amount in the pipe, or could it just be losing the water that's not through the check valve. Basically the water in the pump and pipe before the check valve.
