    Hey, everyone! A few folks pointed out that the BSOD related to the D: drive. This is a great point. We confirmed in WMCT that only a simple volume existed in the HDD, suggesting that no OS was installed there. And yet, the UEFI seemed to consistently bypass WBM in favor of the HDD, tripping the BSOD. It was a super wonky series of events. However, after failing to get literally anywhere in the recovery environment without being looped back into the UEFI, I decided that the best course of action was to reinstall Windows. Thankfully, we were able to get the system back up and running - and so far the WD NVMe appears to be working fine as of (3/25). Thanks for watching this one!

      Yeah the log file dumped to the D drive which was weird to me. I would've deleted at least the MBR partition on the hard drive so the BIOS wouldn't think there was an OS on there. Since the free space on the HDD was 930gb, I doubt there was any data on it so I would've just deleted and recreated the partitions on the HDD.

    For future info. The recovery "drive" is actually another partition on the os drive. It doesn't access it through windows. For issues like this, you generally boot into a USB install of windows and rebuild the bcd or boot partition. This error is common because the boot partition gets corrupt, which was evident when you couldn't access recovery mode

    • @Jiromimi
      @Jiromimi Год назад +4

    That hard drive actually looks like some good ole fashioned half assing to me. Like they noticed the case was bent at the factory, didn't bother to put in the minimal effort to bend it back, and just sent it. Even so, drives are actually pretty robust these days. As long as the drive is off, and the heads are parked, any decent drive should be able to handle about 300 G's of force, and I would imagine the kind of force need to bend that case would have done damage else where. Had it been on at the time... different story. They can only handle about 50 G's when running.
    But Best Buy doesn't surprise me. We used to call those "bench fees". Money you paid for someone to just look at the machine. But you can't really get away with charging those anymore... and I've never seen someone try to charge $150. But I guess they've built a sufficient branding to get away with it. Absurd either way, especially considering they sold the system to her less than a year prior. I wouldn't have charged someone anything to fix that as it I would consider to still be under warranty.

    • @landencarpenter
      @landencarpenter 2 года назад +1

      i was going to say the same thing about those drives. they are blast proof as long as they are off. so shipping them will not harm them even if they are kicked all the way to their destination by ups.

      Many years ago I tried using a keyboard that didn't work with my computer (it might have had a serial connector instead of PS2). I blew something and the computer didn't work anymore. I found a shop that looked at it, saw the problem pretty quickly and apologized that while they could fix it in a few minutes they'd have to charge me $100 for an hour of labor. They were polite, upfront and honest, and I gladly paid.
      Turned out to be a blown diode. I decided I'd never pay anyone to fix a computer for me again. That was about 30 years ago and while I've broken (and built) a fair number of computers since then I've never paid anyone a dime to fix one.
      But... my late brother got a virus on his computer. Instead of coming to me he took it to Best Buy and paid them something like $500 he didn't have to "fix" his computer and for some sort of virus protection package. If he'd come to me I could have (and would have) fixed it for free.

      Prebuilt computers are usually built in a hurry,i had a look at one because it was overheating and it was turning off.The guy who built it plugged the CPU fan in the connector for the case fan,and the system was not able to give the fan the actual speed it needed.Another time i had another build to look at,"fixed" by a professional service because it couldn't keep time and date if it was unplugged and they replaced the CR 2023 battery with a CR2025 they just shoved it in there with force. They really don't care how they build and fix these things,as long as it just turns on they are ok with it

    Hey Greg. Previous Geek Squad employee here. I can tell you the $150 was a one time service fee. Diagnostic alone is $100. The plan they were selling was total tech support for $200 which covers all your computers for a year and comes with webroot(or trend micro) security. That includes all software repairs and hardware repair labor (sans replacement components). That one time is $150 to push towards to the yearly plan to get people to come back and buy other stuff more often.
    They should have, however, offered to send it out under the manufacturer warranty. While yea it's likely a windows issue and potentially the SSD it is still covered by the MFG with a receipt that they can pull up via email or phone number. Long story short, our store had mostly PC techs. We all built and repaired computers for years prior and would do more than any other GS in the area. We would have people drive hours past 2 other best buys just to get to us because we were actual techs. A lot of the software stuff is automated which is partially why a large portion of GS agents are fairly inept which leads to a lot of the horror stories people give.

    There's a chance it could have been a corrupted boot record, and in that case it's worth a shot to attempt recovery before wiping:
    Boot into Windows recovery media and press 'shift + F10', or alternatively navigate to 'repair your computer > troubleshoot > command prompt' and run this command:
    > bootrec /fixboot && bootrec /fixmbr && bootrec /rebuildbcd
    This will rebuild the boot record and also create a new boot configuration
    If this fails with access denied, running this and then the previous command should fix it:
    > bootsect/nt60 sys

    Hi Greg! I think i would have approche this issue differently. First i would have disconnect the extra HDD. Then i would have bring a different SSD that has windows on it and try to boot from it. If all goes well i would have boot on that new SSD and look at the NvME through this Windows. That would have allow me to see if i can access files on the NvME suggesting me that the NvME is not brick but the Windows on it is brick. This is a bit jank but at this point you have nothing to loose; you could have attempt to copy the system32 (and other files needed for windows to boot) from the ssd and overwrite the current system32 on the nvme. I actually did that once on the same scenario and it worked. However because it was a ssd to nvme transfert the now working window was acting weird for obvious reason.

    WD has some software for their drives called WD Dashboard. It can run its own diagnostics on their drives, SATA HDD's, SSD's, &/or NVME's. The software can also update the Firmware.

    Perhaps my experience might be able to shed some light on the matter:
    I've had a fair bit of grief with Windows 10 grenading itself on our new (well, 8th gen) machines, like at least 6 out of 20-ish. Sometimes recreating the BCD did the trick, but usually neither a reinstall nor even OEM recovery would work. (Note that I did not nuke the Windows partition.) You can probably guess how frustrating that was.
    Eventually I found out that the Windows partition was encrypted with BitLocker courtesy of a built-in TPM, apparently this ran automatically during or shortly after installation. Using "manage-bde -off c:" to decrypt at least allowed me to reinstall Windows (the existing install generally was too far gone even if I tried an offline sfc). Later I also noticed that a drive that chkdsk said was fine at first would show up errors after decryption, often pertaining to specific Windows updates.
    You bet I made sure the partition would not be encrypted again. There's still trusty ATA security to keep _3v1L h4xx0rs_ away, should a machine ever get lost. "Good enough for Australia", as EEVBlog Dave says. So far, there have not been any comebacks. *knock on wood*
    There was one installation that I was able to salvage via decryption, chkdsk and sfc within Windows before anything worse could happen.
    My theories as to what the root cause of the issue might be:
    1. BitLocker not getting suspended properly for some reason. It's clearly a problem if say the Windows kernel is expected to be encrypted but actually isn't.
    2. A batch of bad Samsung PM871 SSDs (I sort of doubt it).
    3. A CPU bug causing issues with encryption (I sort of doubt that, too).
    I did run Memtest86, no anomalies there.
    At times I actually was under the impression that the bootloader was generally unable to access the system drive, though I don't know how that could be if the key is clearly stored in the onboard TPM.
    I also wonder whether there was an issue inherent to the image of Windows 10 1903 that the systems shipped with which just kept propagating and growing as the system was updated. From what I could tell the system partition as shipped was quite small at only 64 gigs or so and would be enlarged during setup. IMO W10 kind of sucked before 2004 anyway. Hey, it only was 5 years after launch, can't be that hard on 'em.
    To top it all off, I've also been seeing the first real hardware issues lately, like a key broken off (after less than a year) and what appears to be a dead fan. The biggest issues I had with the preceding Westmere / Sandy Bridge models were loose screws due to lack of Loctite (excused by them not being that high-end). New definitely isn't always better.
    PS - Big fan of "Fix or Flop" here. :D

      Just got through working on my friends HP laptops The first one (2016 era) she couldn't log in with her password,evidently her password profile got corrupted, couldn't attempt a repair because it required a password! Luckily I still had her old hard drive from last year when I upgraded hers to a SSD. Ended up re-cloning the SSD from her old hard drive and then had to do a years worth of updates. Second HP (2017 era) it would just hang trying to boot into windows. Ran a hard drive test and had a short DST error. I was able to get all her pictures,videos and documents of of it and gave them to her on a flash drive. As an experiment I cloned the drive to a SSD with my Wavelink Cloner/Docking station. The SSD still wouldn't boot but I was able to get in the HP factory recovery partition and recover it back to 2017 Windows! Took a day and a half to get all the updates current,WOW! Now she has two working laptops again!

      You might want to check Azure if your company is using it, silent disk encryption with bitlocker isn't just something you accidentally flip on with one button it will be getting enforced by policy. (I'm assuming you're in a corporate environment since you're talking about 6 out of 20 machines)
      In our corporate environment I have also seen TPM chips just cr@p themselves a few times; thankfully though the issues just required new profiles for the affected users.

    As a current Geek Squad Manager, I can tell you the $150 would have involved fixing the pc as well, not just diagnosing it. They were probably charging a one time fix fee, which includes fixing any 1 particular issue minus data backup service. Fortunately my team is very strong when it comes to custom and pre-built pcs so we never have issues finding problems like I've heard in other videos. I am definitely aware that some Geek Squad precincts are not as well versed and mostly do laptop or iPhone repairs.

      Best Buy website lists 1 year manufacturer warranty on parts and labor on these Gaming PCs. Shouldn't that $150 be on them?

    • @SkylessFlyer
      @SkylessFlyer 2 года назад +3

      @@BReal-10EC If the pc was bought less than a year ago then yes manufacturer warranty would cover any hardware issues on hardware originally put in the unit. We would have to ship it off to get the manufacturer to approve and replace/fix any components needed. If it is software then they won't cover it.

    • @ProNetC2
      @ProNetC2 2 года назад +1

      I agree with you, As an ARA working for Geek Squad myself still employed, this is something we would of done, First running diagnostics to verify all HW is running the way it's suppose to, then proceed to repair the OS and if that fails then Windows installation. Like you said depending on the location someone lives in, not every precinct will have the capabilities to diagnose something as simple as this. Which really sucks because it does make GS look bad when an Agent has no idea what they are doing. Which is why i always teach my team including CA's to properly check a Pre-built/Custom PC and determine if its something that can be fixed on the spot without needing to bring it to the back which will also make the client happy, or see us ARA's if it requires any further testing before deciding what needs to be done.

    • @ProNetC2
      @ProNetC2 2 года назад +1

      @@BReal-10EC Like skyless mentioned, like with many devices such as laptops and pre-built desktop computers, they all do come with a 1 year limited warranty with the MFG as long as their is no tampering on the device, damage, or parts replaced by the user. That being said, with a issue like this it is something that the MFG would of covered given their isn't any physical damage to it. The service Greg mentioned of 150$ is a one time fix which we offer if the client isn't interested in getting our Total tech service which involves HW diagnostics and Re-installation of windows and activation if HW passes, if the client doesn't wish to send the device to MFG and wait roughly around 2-4 weeks or are not covered under warranty. Other wise MFG warranty isn't covered by Best Buy in store which is why they call it a MFG warranty. No company offers that unless it is there own warranty. Which is why we offer our clients Total Tech Service to diagnose/repair/replace parts(Client will need to pay out of pocket for parts replacement)/Data Backup and HW installation but not limited to additional services not mentioned here. Actually our TTS service now includes Best buys warranty which will also require sending out for service if there is any HW issues not possible to fix in store/client does not want to pay extra.
      That being said Not every Geek Squad would have that knowledge some ARA's i work with do, so it does suck when a client goes to one and a CA or ARA that doesn't have much experiences tells them one thing that is actually the opposit. As far as what Greg is doing, i do appreciate what he does, specially where he is at, glad he can help people out that don't have much experience in this kind of field. Although im surprised he took the easy way out, considering all partitions were intact when he loaded windows, this probably could of been an easy fix by running CMD DISM-MKDIR-BOOTREC BCD-CHKDSK commands etc etc to fix this issue, CMD is your best friend here when it comes fixes like this, which is what some techs forget about.

    Tech here for many years. I find this happens always when you install an NVMe drive, clone your install over from SATA and then expect it to boot. inaccessible drive once Windows 10 starts to load, because it didn't have the NVMe driver installed on the root drive. To me, this looks suspiciously the case, new looking WD SN550 in an older system. How do you fix it? Just boot up with your new NVMe disk while booting your old SATA install. Once it's booted, THEN clone your install over to NVMe, you now have the correct drivers in Windows, and it won't get that BSOD error. In this case, looks to me like it was cloned and then the HDD was wiped, I guess you could clone it back first.

      Windows 10 & 11 should have the drivers for *most* NVMe disks, but yeah its a good idea to install it in a secondary slot to load the drivers to Windows. Then also make sure you've switched it from SATA to AHCI in the UEFI and that its booting OK like that before you clone.

    A couple of things to mention here:
    - Always unplug auxiliary drives when reinstalling Windows. Windows has a habit of installing bootloaders on the wrong drive, unplugging them eliminates that risk
    - For spurious data corruption issues like this, always run a memtest. Bad RAM can lead to corrupt partition data.

    Just found this channel through the Fix or Flop series and I love it! I have a group of friends I built systems for and they always know to come to me for free fixes, maintenance, or upgrades. It is fun to me since computers are both my hobby and career. After getting into IT, I learned that there are very sketchy and/or greedy companies with IT services. Geek Squad for sure seems to be one in the greed department. No offence to people who work there because experiences seem to differ based on location. but when those places do it "wrong," they seem to exaggerate the issue to justify cost while also doing the lazy easy inefficient fix and charge you a lot for it. I'm talking a full drive wipe for something a few commands in cmd can fix or just a fresh install of a software or drivers would fix. Glad you are someone people in your area can go to so they don't have to go through that kind of hassle.

    These issues mainly happen when some windows update is corrupt, for example when the PC was shut down while installing them. Sometimes that can ruin Windows completely and reinstalling windows is the easiest and best fix for it. That's why making backups of your files is so important because then it doesn't even bother you.

    My llast BSOD was actually a motherboard memory issue which I have never had before. It was slot 1 that had gone bad, and then it would not post with a memory stick in slot 1. I do love the "post codes" on the motherboards. They are very handy. In the end I just got a new motherboard. Really, as soon as something on a motherboard goes bad, it's best just to throw it away and get a new one, because you can guarantee if you don't, something else will go wrong and may damage other components as well. Great fix, Greg.

    From my experience at working at Bestbuy over a decade ago, it did not use to cost this much. They aren't charging by the hour like other standard computer repair stores (or at least they were not when I was there). I was there when they did eventually hike up the price but a majority of the time they will just give the estimated price of their standard in-store service (which was about $129 CAD) and check the machine in. It would go up on the bench and they would run a custom software suite of tools that run different tests automatically to provide an overall check of the system. Most of the time we would do a quick version of the test if we already suspect what the issue may be and let the customer browse the store and check in a little later to see if we've found anything. If it wasn't anything serious or was a very minor issue, we would charge a lower diagnostic fee instead. If it was a part replacement we would charge the diagnostic fee + part replacement labour fee + replacement part. If the cost for individual replacements exceeded the standard service, we would normally just charge the lower amount... but mind you this is in Canada.
    A lot of our repairs came from warranty work, which was at no cost to the customer. I think we did charge a diagnostic fee, I can't remember the cost. It was either sent out or we would order replacement parts and do it ourselves, labour was charged to the manufacturer in this case. If it was a pre-built or if she bought it in parts and had the receipts, she could have brought that along and they would have done the work via warranty. It's not always cut and dry service/abour charges.
