The white stuff stacked in the aio is caused by using a wrong ratio of aluminum radiator and a copper block (msi did the same thing too and RMAed it

That’s probably what is causing the red bits in the fluid too. As the aluminium reacts with the copper then it causes bits of copper to break loose.
@@mikeycrackson Many do. Happens in many industries. Really lame. They choose to save a few cents per unit and couldn't care less about the customer. Lovely.
Yep after a year my msi aio made the exact same rattling noise and i thought it was a wire touching something too
Copper rads are too expensive for aios. There are anticrossive additives like glycol.
Unfortunately it took asiteck a long time to get the ratios right.
And there are still batches that get it wrong.
What I like about this series is it’s not only us learning things, it’s also Greg. He didn’t think to check the AIO for clogging, now he does.
I absolutely love these videos and this series has actually helped me whenever my pc would freeze when starting windows and when I was on chrome it shut down and wouldn’t post and both times I used the classic technic of clearing the cmos that I learned from this series and it worked like a charm.

I knew the minute I saw "iBuyPower" it was the AIO. I had a similar issue on a computer I bought from them that was less than a year old. The AIO was a 240 mm. At first I wasn't sure what was going on because it actually wasn't "overheating" per se when idling or doing light tasks like web browsing. Just running hotter than before. It was idling at like 35-40 degrees and while web browsing it would fluctuate between 45 and 60. Which seems a bit warm but not dangerous. But here's where it got weird. It was overheating like over 80 degrees (celsius) after waking up from sleep, and if I did more intensive stuff like in photoshop or blender it overheated into the 90s. Tested with Cinebench and got instant temps in the mid 90s. It was technically under warranty but they wanted me to send the whole PC back to California at my expense with no guarantee on when they'd get it back to me, so I just decided to replace the AIO myself and see if that was the issue. I went with an ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II, and since I had the room, I got the 360. It must have been something wrong with the iBuyPower AIO because after installing the Arctic, all the temp problems I was having evaporated. Now I'm idling at 29-30 degrees and even when running multiple passes in Cinebench I don't get above 65 degrees. The bizarre overheating after sleep issue is gone too. Maybe I'll try and take the old one apart like you did and see if mine had similar issues. It might be, since the pump always felt like it was working.

Seeing that video made me change my 5 year old one lmfao I realized my computer was hitting 125c on 2 cores but after swap a cool 40-60
It's why I'm hesitant to grab one

I like the idea of checking to see how many of these aio's on the market are having these issues, its baffling to see all that crud inside of these that definitely shouldn't be there!

Avoid the cheap junk ones like MSI that have the pump in the radiator. Stick with Corsair or Arctic Freezer.

@@mutley69 Not really. They are bulky and block RAM slots. There aren't really any good designs anymore either.
@@StormsparkPegasus I agree although both can be bulky as hell, depends which company you go for. Those noctua air coolers are insanely quiet and really good performance wise.

It really is a shame. I still have a 10 year old Corsair H80 running on my old gaming build with a 3770k running 4.8GHz. That thing STILL runs like a charm. Mind you, there is a lot of air in the loop from evaporation over a decade, but temps don't exceed 75c which is extraordinary for a 120mm AIO on a CPU running 1.48V.
Good choice for review. During build process these closed loop AIO devices should be flushed well before final fill occurs. Sometimes a shortcut happens, and contamination is left inside the system.
I am always looking forward in the new videos in this playlist.... really useful and easy to understand... makes troubleshooting set ups easier!

Great vid Greg, and a great result, looks like you really found a problem there. Have been worried about my Corsair AIO, just because, but ran some stess tests only yesterday and it all seemed normal. Fingers crossed, after 18 months, it seems fine. Love the FoF playlist's, thanks Greg.
A while back there was a kitguru review I read that showed very poor performance of their msi coreliquid aio unit, but they didn't open it and inspect anything but more or less wrote it off as a bad sample. I would say your video pushed msi into thinking that maybe they should check into it. Keep up with your work it helps in ways you don't even know sometimes
That's crazy to see new AIOs messing up so quickly. I definitively would like to see you restore the AIO in another video. This video made me thing of my AIO, I have a Corsair H100i that I bought back in 2014 and its still kicking. Cooled my 3770k and now my 10700k perfectly.

yup only ran corsair. i think icue is little but wonky software but the hardware is solid.
It’s not really a new aio. IBuyPower has used that particular model for years since it’s easy to acquire and cheap.
You're lucky, my first AIO dead after a year.
I had a kraken x40 bought in 2013 cooling my 3770k up until I switched to AM4 a few weeks ago. I even left it running 24/7 for a good while. I could probably switch it over and get a few more years out of it if I ordered an AM4 mounting bracket.
i had the same problem a week ago. and the problem was my stock cpu intel cooler. thank god it was a simple fix. i learned a lot from gregs videos
Intel stock coolers aren't that great for most of their CPUs.

@@videogamefreak221122 my i5 10400f(with the stock intel cooler) touches 90° c when rendering videos or when pushing it to its limit, so yea those crappy coolers are only good for i3s or older i5s
stock cpu intel coolers are known for getting that gunk build-up in the waterblock and pump, it happens to the best of us

That Vcore voltage is scary high imo. Even for ryzen.
The bios just shows the boost voltages when using PBO. It doesn't show when it goes down to low voltages which it does on Windows. And zen chips can safely hit 1.5v-1.6v IF they are observing FIT limits. I think you may be referring to those voltages being dangerous if you set those on a fixed overclock, not PBO.
Ryzen X CPU are known for over voltage at stock.
Engineers: this is the right voltage so it works safe.
People on internet: its high hur dur, i know its high because an yotuber did an undervolt and he proved to me that 1.4 volt is high.

I find it so interesting that AIOs can even do this, my previous PC was using a H60 for 5 1/2 years and I never had this issue, hope that still holds up with my h150i in my new system.
do you think that this was caused by aio that have pump on the radiator, if the pump at the cpu block it self, will it be the same problem?

I 've been using an H150i pro for 3.5 years now, still holds up really well with an overclocked 8700K.
I also find it interesting and BAD, at the same time, that life has been growing inside an AIO :p

I had the same problems a year ago when I bought an iBuyPower PC from Costco. I booted it up, and right out of the box, the pump was making a clicking whirring noise before Post. My PC was idling at 60C just like in the video, but this PC was fresh off the shelf! I did some investigating, and found the same thing with the fans pointing the wrong way, and at that point decided to completely abandon that PC, lest I find out where else iBP messed up on the build. The fact iBP prebuilts are having these AIO and fan problems on brand new computers speaks volumes about their quality control.
Unfortunately, I was in a "I need a good PC literally right now" emergency, and swapped it out with...sigh...ANOTHER iBuyPower prebuilt PC. These chip shortages, man. But I guess this second PC was an unexpected redemption for iBP, because it booted without any issues and has been serving me quite well ever since.

Sadly I have suspected the exact same issues from my Enermax AIO last month, been used for a year...luckily I can just sent it back to the supplier and replace with a new one. But tbh...might consider changing back to air cooler after this new AIO is broke again, a bit worried about water cooling now

I love the AIO idea you have. I finally got my build up and running and I ran Cinebanch R23 last night. 48C was the hottest my CPU got and I ran the 30 minute test so I was pleasantly surprised, and this was with me forgetting to take the dust filter off of the top of my PC (I have the AIO top mounted). Coming from my old computer having idle temps in the 70s... I love the upgrade lol. From now on I will be monitoring stuff like that. I am running the Enermax III RGB version (got it at a discount before I knew the difference between RGB and ARGB.. it's the only drawback because it's more for me to figure out and it's the only non ARGB component in my pc) and so far it works like a charm.
Appreciate your video so much Greg! I have an msi coreliquid 240r that has been making the same sound as the aio in this video. I only purchased it last July. I had no clue there was a recall on them, and will be sure to submit my serial number for a replacement. Thank you!

Seeing this is very concerning especially since most companies get their AIO coolers made from the same manufacturers just with their logo or twist on them.
I have never liked AIO coolers myself due to there being many points of failure. But this, this brings up a whole new point of failure that is not caused by the user but by the manufacturers.
A lot of Noctua Air Coolers can keep a CPU as cool as 360 AIO's I get that it might not look cool but to anyone new to PCs or someone that just wants a PC that they can build and forget it for the next 5 years getting a Air Cooler is definitely the way to go.
In a time like this where everything is becoming more expensive, you provide a valuable service to your community. PC gaming is definitely a luxury we take for granted so if someone can get their PC fixed without replacing major components it is a major win! Thank you for what you do.

i think the OEM of this AIO is the same as the msi one, because both has the same fluid color (yes that can be different oem vs oem) and pump desings.
I had this same issue with the IBP pump. From my research its a rebranded NZXT Kraken M22 as they operate out of the same building.

I built my first PC a few months ago in the bequiet! 500DX case that you advertised in the beginning of the video. I cannot recommend it enough! Great flow, quiet fans, dust filtration is solid, and imo its one of the best looking cases out there.

Great Video! AIOs have improved, but I am not a big fan of them. Unless you are doing extreme overclocking, they are not needed. A good quality air cooler will keep your CPU within a few degrees centigrade of an AIO. If the fan fails, it has the advantage of providing passive cooling and is an easy, inexpensive repair.
@@philiprobar Gamer's Nexus does extreme overclocking. Most people don't. The siituation doesn't apply.
@@jaytoney3007 Not true. Gamers' Nexus concentrates on detailed, accurate reviews and they regularly comment on price to performance ratio. Unless it is the specific topic of a video, overclocking is usually only a small part of most reviews.
I'm not a water cooling fan boy. I've never used it in a personal build.
Gamers' Nexus advice can be summarized as follows:
A good AIO has the advantage of being able to, in general, run quieter as they provide good cooling with lower fan speeds and are better able to absorb short term spikes in heat production without having to speed up their fan(s).
Avoid the least expensive, no-name AIOs. Other than a couple of well know screwups by well known companies AIOs have very low failure rates and will last for years.
If you're going cheap use air cooling, something like the Vetroo V5, Hyper 212, etc. (There are several very good $20-$40 coolers.)
For mid and high end it's a toss up depending on numerous factors that each user will have to decide on: your risk profile, available space, overclocking, personal preference, etc.

Personally never had a good experience with any single fan radiator coolers. They heat up real quick even in a push pull fan setup. That Dark Rock Slim was a HUGE upgrade
Better off with a good air cooler over a 120mm aio. Not surprised that IBuypower did this.
A single fan AIO is like one of those bolt on chrome exhaust tips, it just looks fancy and doesn't help performance. Cheap AIO's are for the ricers of the PC gaming community.
@@jordanlazarus7345 it checks off a box because gamers like AIOs and they look nice, but a 120mm one is meant for a small form factor case where the options for cooling are much more restricted. In a mid to large tower case all it does is look good.
@@spankbuda3084 I had a 4790k at the time. No OC'ing but turbo boost was enabled. The case was a NZXT Phantom. I just used the stock fans for the case. For the AIOs I always used the fans that it came with.

Just bought the electric duster that you use cause I've been needing a good one instead of buying canned air and just disassembled my whole pc and gave it a good cleaning. So much better and faster than canned air because you don't have to wait for it to warm back up after each use. Absolutely loving it!

It's a late comment but just wanna say Greg, still absolutely love watching this series its just one of those things where I see it, I click it. Always interesting to see what takes these systems down, even when its really minor. It also made me glad I haven't changed my NH-D14 over the years for an all in one haha. I had the exact same problem with the ibuypower AIO and it started after 16 months of use. I got a similar cooler that you used as a replacement. Didn't even try to clean it out. Thanks for the video
I had the exact same issue, and sound, with my iBuyPower. I ended up replacing the AIO with a Fractal 240 AIO. Took care of the problem immediately. I learned a lot fixing the problems on that thing. Not exactly ideal for an SI, but it taught me valuable lessons.
Thanks, this was informative as into relation of what cpu cooler I want to use to replace my old stock one. Wind cooler looks more easy for a noob like me to use. Also a bit of knowledge on how to properly apply thermal paste and seating a wind cooler on top of cpu.
I honestly initially just subscribed because of the NZXT giveaway. But now I’ve binged and finished Season 1 and all the episodes on Season 2. I have learned a lot for the PC build I’m doing for my son and for possible troubleshooting in the future. This is one subscription I do not at all regret.
It definitely is, I actually had the same thing happen to MSI MPG 360mm AIO that was featured in the last AIO replacement video you did! I just ended up buying a Be quiet Dark Rock Pro 4 for easier maintenance
I'm using the same air cooler on a 12700k and having no issues with it running at stock speed.

Would like to see you call-out these manufacturers more and follow-up with contacting them and getting them to recognize their fatally flawed products and commit to change. That may not be in your choses wheelhouse, but your subscriber base level gives you real influence in this space.
Glad I went with a asetek gen 7 pump AIO instead of these ones that relocate it. I'm glad it has gotten exposure for a somewhat cheap out of a dominating patent that has been apart of the industry for a long time.

I do have some question about the two last videos about AIO regarding its pump position tho.
For people who doesn't really understand the pump location, is it safe to assume the position of the pump is where the cable located?
If the block side of the AIO has a cable, can we assume the pump is there instead of in the radiator side?
I had the same problem in my NZXT Kraken ML120. The noise was similar and the temperature problem as well.
There was a lack of coolant after one year but was possible to replace it.
There were a lot of particles and dirty inside and the fact is that the parts of the MSI seems to be exactly the same than in the Kraken.
Now the AIO is maintaining the CPU cold and working properly.

My Corsair h100i v2 has been running for 5 years with 10+ hours of use a day and still going strong. Ryzen 7 1700X idles at 32 degrees and under a full load barely hits 70.

These videos are addictive ... damn I am water cooling the two 1080ti's and i9-7980xe, heard the gurgle sound a year ago on one of the 1080ti hybrid pumps but never since ... going since 2016. Everything super cool!
I'm using either custom waterloop (EKWB) or an aircooler. I have used AIO's in earlier builds, but I got the same problem as in this video. And this is your second clogged AIO tells me that you should keep away from AIO's.

I had the exact same problem with my iBuyPower AIO. Also my case fans were making a similar sound in this video. Every couple of months they start making a clipping/grinding sound and needed to be replaced. I swapped the AIO for a Noctua Air cooler and the case fans for Corsair ll120.

It’s funny because I’ve been getting overheating warnings from a system I personally built about a year ago to the point where I can’t actually power it on anymore due to temperatures rapidly rising, well due to component shortages and covid making it difficult to earn sufficient funds to look into repairing it I put it to one side a few months ago until I could give it a look and see what was happening I saw the other video that featured this problem and I never thought for a million years it could be related however after checking everything else and coming up with nothing I managed to pick up a Corsair capelix elite cooler a bit cheaper than retail and Needing this system back up and running again I swapped the coolers over yesterday and sure enough the temperatures dropped back to a reasonable level so today I opened the pump like you did and it was indeed blocked with what I can only describe as rotting melon or something that smells exactly like it but with a really rotten tinge to it. Sadly this build did has not come out of this event in one piece as the motherboard has suffered some damage due to the temps but at least now I know what caused it. It’s a shame that I didn’t catch this quicker so for now this system remains in storage Until I can replace the motherboard sadly. I can not say for sure that this is related but it does share similarities to this however the fluid coming out of mine had flakes in it for sure it was not the colour that yours was 🤷♂️ - thank you for highlighting this issue as it was driving me mad!
The problem is galvanic corrosion caused by fluid with insufficient corrosion inhibitors. This cooler and the MSI one from a few weeks back are both made by the same OEM, a manufacturer called Apaltek. They are the same manufacturer that made the Enermax Liqtech TR4 coolers that Gamers Nexus investigated for the same failures a couple years ago. In October 2021, Igorslab published an article titled (in English) "When the OEM slackens or saves money - AiO compact water cooling systems with pre-programmed expiry date and an example from our lab", which highlights the same problem from the same manufacturer. Great work again Greg. Your continuing coverage in this series may lead to serious changes at Apaltek. MSI stepped up quickly with their recall, seemingly in response to your video, hopefully iBUYPOWER and other companies using Apaltek as an OEM do the same.

This was pretty funny to watch. I have binge watching all of these and my IBUYPOWER cooler was making this noise as well. Looks like its time to buy a new one.
My Enermax Liqmax III RGB 240 AIO died as well recently - 9 months in use - sound was pretty much the same as in the video. After watching your first video I went back to air cooling with the Cooler Master MA612 too. Ive already got a replacement for the AIO by my dealer (German laws are very consumer friendly) - but Im not planning to put it into my system again.

My cpu over heats, geek squad said my AIO is fine, I got it back and in my bios it shows 0rpm for me pump. Literally same AIO as this video except I have a 240mm

That Gunk build up in the AIOs is like what GN Steve found in the Apr 26, 2019 "Enermax's AIO Gunk Problem: Liqtech TR4 Cooler After 18 Months" which has the 'Pump in Block' layout.
That Gunk is more likely from there not being enough antifungal in the fluid, I have opened my DeepCool Captain (over 5yrs old when I refilled it due to low Fluid Level) & many Coolermaster AIOs that are many years old to customise them & have not seen any Fungal Build up like this.
I would really love to see you repair some of the salvageable parts that you took out from the PCs of the Fix or Flop Series. _(like the AIO)_
Thanks to your videos I fixed my msi kraken I have it only 7-8 months it had the same issue as the one on the video

I have the same setup with the same ibuypower liquid cooler. I just recently having that grinding sound and my CPU is at 80°-85° idle.

Same thing was happening with my Kraken M22 AIO but after I replaced the AIO temps went down I've only had my current PC for 6 months and It began doing this, my CPU temps were reaching up to 100* before & I had tried reseating the cooler and reapplying thermals but nothing worked. I love your videos as well!
That iBuyPower AIO is a rebranded Kraken m22. Real easy for them to get and rebrand them.
My ibuypower pc was having the same issues and it was a AIO that they included. I have a very similar set up as this user so I think that there might be something wrong with their AIOs of that time frame. Also watching your videos helped me fix mine so thank you for the awesome content!

I use to work at a ma and pa computer repairshop and I have noticed that we mostly had to fix ibuypower systems and its the water cooler setups with the rad on the back of the case has some type of issue with overheating or a bad aio
Pretty happy with my decision to go slim tower cooler now. That gunk is nasty!

About 6 months ago, my 6 year old 980 Ti Hybrid had started to run a bit warmer than usual. Thankfully I caught it early on.
I suspected that the flow was being restricted.
So I pulled the cold plate and found gelatin like substance had clogged the channels inside the plate. Almost identical to what I see in the video.
I cleaned it up the best I could and filled it back up. It has been running nice and cool since then.
