  • The sunshine vitamin, good ol' Vitamin D. It's one of the biggest health benefits of sunlight exposure. But how do we go from a sun shiny day to creation of an entire nutrient?

    This video is starting to get some search traffic, so I want to clarify something. While the claims I made about Vitamin D’s health benefits (cancer prevention, and a role in the immune system) have evidence, you should ALWAYS question what you hear on the internet. I can’t stand oversimplified statements about science, and I breezed over all those claims too quickly (like effect size or even what I mean by “a role in the immune system”). The video is still true, but I wish I had gone into more nuance when writing this script. Take care!

    I think it is essential when discussing vitamin D in a video to specify each type of vitamin D (D, D2, D3, etc.) to avoid ambiguity. Additionally, it may be more accurate to avoid using "more important" or "more useful" when referring to vitamins or micronutrients. Instead, it is important to emphasize that vitamins are not stored in the body and are washed away daily through processes like urination and sweating.
    When people refer to vitamin D deficiency, they often refer specifically to low levels of vitamin D3.
    - While vitamin D3 is generally more effective than vitamin D2 at raising and maintaining vitamin D levels in the body, both forms are still used to treat and prevent vitamin D deficiency. However, there is ongoing debate and research about the relative effectiveness of D2 versus D3.
    - Both forms of vitamin D (D2 and D3) are important for overall health. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in calcium absorption, bone health, immune function, and other physiological processes. Therefore, neither form can be considered unimportant for overall health.

    Closer to the equator, a higher percentage of sunlight consists of type B radiation. Approximately 95% of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth's surface is UVA, while the remaining 5% is UVB. These percentages can vary depending on factors such as time of day, season, and geographical location. However, the 5% figure represents the maximum proportion of UVB radiation.

    Welcome to Canada - where 40% of the population is deficient all winter, but only 25% through the summer. I bet quite a bunch of the billion people who are deficient are in latitudes where even on clear days in the winter, there's just not enough UVB for the very limited amount of time most people spend outside and the necessity of keeping maximum skin heavily covered.

    • @Corporis
      @Corporis  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for asking! For future reference, I always put my sources in the description, so you're welcome to check there. The proper answer is long, which is why I shortened it:
      "ESCP suggests that the maintenance tolerable upper limits (UL) of vitamin D, which is not to be exceeded without medical supervision, should be 1000 IU/d for infants up to 6 months, 1500 IU/d for infants from 6 months to 1 year, at least 2500 IU/d for children aged 1-3 years, 3000 IU/d for children aged 4-8 years, and 4000 IU/d for everyone over 8 years. Higher levels of 2000 IU/d for children 0-1 year, 4000 IU/d for children 1-18 years, and 10000 IU/d for children and adults 19 years and older may be needed to correct VDD"

    So let me get this straight. Vitamind D is made from sunlight interacting with cholesterol in our skin/bodies? Do I also understand correctly that every cell in the body, especially the brain, contains cholesterol?
    Do i also understand that our major sex hormones are created with cholesterol?
    Lastly, do i understand correctly that our bodies have a built-in cholesterol system? The less you eat, the more it makes, and the more you eat, the less it makes?
    Why the hell are all the doctors telling us to eat less cholesterol then? Im no scientist, but wouldn't that cause an increase in over all mortality?
    Our fear of cholesterol simply makes no sense to me. Im beginning to think that doctors and scientists dont have my best interest in mind.
