  • There are 12 nerves that pop off of your brain that control a variety of functions. Anatomy classes almost always have you memorize them with a cutesy little mnemonic, which is fine, but I'd rather you understand what they do.

Hi, I’m Patrick. I’m a freelance science writer based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and a master’s in clinical exercise physiology. I used to work in the clinical setting as a certified athletic trainer, physical therapy aide, and a certified strength and conditioning specialist. After working in the clinical setting, I went back to school and became a teacher. The goal of my content is to help normal people, not just pre-med students, learn about the human body. That might mean explaining a topic from an anatomy class or exploring a topic from medical history.

finally an video that doesn't just list the nerve but actually describes each nerve and their functions using multiple angles and illustrations to properly locate their actual position in the body, dropping in some physical testing AND dad jokes to remember! so good! I cannot for the life of me remember things with not context. thank you so much!

Thanks for the kind words! And I agree, the context is so so important for complex anatomy. Mnemonics are great, but not the only solution!

I've found that lots people refer to the number vs name when discussing the cranial nerves and not every cranial nerve name reminded me of what it does so I came up with this mnemonic for remembering what each nerve # controls. It's just a quicker thought process for me to go directly from # to function rather than # , mnemonic, name then function. Hope this helps someone else.
