I had kind of gotten off of YT and social media for a bit and I’m just coming in after catching up on the Tribe side of things with that “End of the Road” video. Slight gut punch, but… Daniel, I just want to say I’m glad you’ve made a (fairly natural, IMO) pivot and I hope you continue on with it for a long time to come. I think I’ll hang my hat and stay for a bit again and see where things go. Cheers.
Handling criticism and getting feedback are other areas that I struggle with because everyone's got their own opinion but "you've" got the vision creatively that serves to keep motivation going, especially when you're putting the work in the first place.
Challenge accepted! Lucky Charms muthafuka! Let me have the damn milk already, my Cheerios must be moistened! Looks like it's All-Bran for breakfast... again.
I love this! It reminds me of one of Bruce Lee's quote that goes, "Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own." Love this new content! Salud🥃
I REALLY loved this video. I shared the idea of creativity with constraints with my two teen daughters and it really struck a chord with them and me. The idea of the artist with a blank canvas who has no connection to what came before while idealistic is not realistic. But the idea of taking what you know with what you don't know or can't control and making something your own - that's powerful. Also I'm in PA so selfishly always love when you showcase a PA whiskey. Please keep doing this videos!
I love these videos and stories. Always glad to see PA whiskey getting love. We're starting to break out with a lot of distilleries doing fantastic whiskey. Hopefully state rules change soon so it's more available to more people.
I want to add something based on the comments. I LOVE your videos Daniel. You make me think, and I am looking forward to more of your reflections. Strikes me as a difficult task, but thus far, you are truly resonating with me deeply.
I watched an interview with Roy whose genius he presents in such a “matter of fact” way that it isn’t intimidating but rather, palatable, easy to take in. You’re doing that here. I can’t wait to try it! (Frank)
"I Just Want To Celebrate", Bring The Dark - Daniel Whittington: Texas country ZZ Top nose, yet keeping the Rare Earth classic rock and R&B vibe mouthfeel. A stylized cover that goes well with Bourbon.
That is an excellent discussion on being intentionally influenced by your heroes. I forgot where I learned it from, but I’ve always liked the notion of Imitate, Assimilate, Innovate. In short, start by learning that lick/riff/progression/whatever by rote… then incorporate it into your own work/improv… then play with mutating it to fit whatever context you’re creating. I once heard Joe Satriani say in an interview that you can hear Billy Gibbons’s influence all over his playing. I was dubious, but you totally can. Also, people need to hear that they don’t need to worry about “finding your own voice”. You already have one; just start creating. I’m loving the new format. Thanks for your insights.
Been watching you for years. Always a pleasure 🙏. I consider myself a level 1 sommelier and a level 10 mooch. I figured I was a sommelier when I was the only one in a group of friends, genuinely enjoying whiskey/ scotch and not taking shots to get drunk. I've tried everything from even williams to ghost and rare to the rarest Isla scotch. Over the holidays I was fortunate to buy ryujin. A Japanese whiskey. Please do a video if u have it in the vault or send me your contact so I can be a glorious bastard and send you a bottle. It's pure nectar. Created by the gods. Smoother than blue at 30% price. Distinct flavor that changes through the phases. And finishes so so well. Honestly the first whiskey that can mix well with anything or hold up on its own. It's truly what whiskey and this channel represents!
When I'm stuck for something to draw, I go through the t-shirt ads in my social media feed until I find one I like, and then try to draw it in my style. It's a lot of fun.
This is all incredibly true. An example of a subject some think of as the antithesis of ‘creativity’: mathematics. But talk to any (particularly pure) mathematician and you’ll quickly find that their job is one of the most creative ones there is. They create constraints, and then let their imagination go absolutely wild.
Okay now that you've talked about your music, thinks it's time you do a a demonstration and performance. As much it was fun to have Rex around and I do miss the mooch here along side you, this new dynamic of you and talks of philosophy, culture and art, really makes sitting down with a drink relaxing and soothing. And sorry, I'm guilty for saying, I wasn't even watching as much in the past because it was really getting repetitive but now I look forward to coming back to this series
Hey Daniel, I LOVE the more serious tone you are taking to this. I really do. Thank you so much and looking forward to more of your wonderful & creative insights.
Very much digging this new thing you are doing. Also, how can I find the music that you recorded or produced? I’m a drummer myself and would love to hear it.
The most successful projects I’ve had whether in the military or in my side gig have had incredible innovations through the presence of constraints. Great video!
Interesting ideas. Not sure I agree entirely, but I think there is really nothing completely original when it comes to anything we make creatively. Any original work of any "art" builds or takes from what came before it. And, I think working within structure can be very creative, from Shakespeare's sonnets to the 12-bar blues. Thanks!
Thank you Daniel! As owner and meadmaker of a small craft meadery this year has been a struggle but, this little video was engerizing. Gave me a fresh look on my meads and it's true, stealing is great but never replicated, Cheers!
OOf "Double" peated. No thanks, I don't like half a peat LOL You know....now you have to play one of these songs for us. Even if just an acoustic guitar version of one. ;)
When I first read the thumbnail I thought it said “Creativity Starts With Croissants.” I thought, “oh, this is about starting your day with a good breakfast.” This will be good… I was wrong… about the croissants.
I have not expanded my palate into scotch or single malts (yet) but I really want to try something peated that lets me learn that particular taste. Any suggestions for a traditional peated scotch that's available and $60-$80?
Thank you Daniel! This is also a lot like dealing with executive dysfunction, not knowing where to start on projects or tasks, once those are broken down, given a time constraint, or what needs to happen first really frees one to take action and start doing. Sometimes just jumping in isn't enough. But don't get caught up in perfectionism either. Do what you love and make it yours! Love these new videos, thank you for making them yours.
Daniel, once again you nailed it. Can't wait for your next video. I could see you as a motivational speaker. With or without the whiskey. But the whiskey is a nice touch.
Good morning you MB's. Let u steal my attention before i even had my coffee. Too early for whiskey. Hope you had a great time with your boys for the holiday Br. Was sorry to hear about Pat, damn shame. Make every second count.
Interesting whiskey, still calibrating my tastes to Daniels even after many years. Funny thing about borrowing ideas- if you really dig into the musical Hamilton- Lin Manuel Miranda is very open about taking good ideas from a lot of other people and doing something different with them. And over my 30 years as an engineer, I claimed that I was lazy when I used other people's ideas to solve problems- but it's just a good way of doing things. So it will be interesting to see how whiskey comes up with a new thing when someone uses an idea from someone else. Daniel- tell Rex to look into parched (fire roasted) corn. Saw that it was a thing to eat 300 years ago.
I like to play with the notion that our imagination is a sensory organ. Picture ideas as beings in their own right. When we have lots of ideas, really what is happening is that we are making our mind space habitable to the life forms of ideas. We use the sensory organ (that we call our imagination), to sense these beings and learn about their qualities of existence. That is how multiple people can experience the same or similar ideas, they are alive independent of our observation of them!
@@WhiskeyVault I love it. Aside from the music being great, the results really tie back into constraints spurring creativity. I've never had that mindset but it makes sense - especially after hearing your music. Well done
I love this! Once again perfect timing when on the edge of starting my own business! By the way, I would love to hear that song - your version of "Stayin' alive" that you have been talking about! Can you share it? Cheers Daniel and have a great week!🥃🥃
Interestingly, there have been a few studies done on AI generated music VS human made, and on top of lacking emotional depth the biggest divider was that AI generated music was somehow uncanny to the human ear do to its complete lack of any flaws.
For now. I suspect soon it will be (in the case of certain restricted genres, and for most people) hard to tell. I wish that weren’t the case, but it probably will be.

I’m not sure if it has been mentioned but all the songs are on Apple Music under Daniel’s name. I could listen to that album all day.
Perhaps we should have moved beyond thinking about what we miss by now. But I do miss the intro and outro music.
The intro music especially for me. I will miss that a bunch.
Daniel's rendition of "Ms. Jackson" is still the best way I've ever heard that song.
Got a link? Can't throw out a compliment without letting the rest of us determine if your opinion is worthy 😉🤔 Sláinte!! 🥃

Creativity doesn’t have to start with croissants, but it’s certainly a good place to start.
I loved listening to your talk on creativity. The blank page is very scary. Rules and boundaries give us a safety net to try out new things.

Wow, came for the whisk(e)y and got an amazing creative lesson! Thanks Daniel
The story made me think of Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt” by NIN

Is the outro supposed to be a riff on Take Five?
Well, he did say steal . . . ahem . . . borrow. ;-)
It could be subconsciously :-) I just played it and tracked it because it had vibe.
