- On this episode we review the latest exciting release from The Timex Corporation. Part of their recent Expedition North series, the Field Post Mechanical was definitely a standout from the lineup for me, offering clean military field watch aesthetics, a hacking and handwinding mechanical movement, and an anti-reflective coated Sapphire crystal, in a very affordable $200ish price range. Although not a perfect watch, still a very compelling offering for sure. Stay tuned until the end for bonus footage where I compare to some of it's closest competitors from Seiko 5, BOLDR, and of course Hamilton, thanks guys!
Buyer beware. I bought one of these. It’s a great size with great case proportions. However, within 24 hours of receiving the watch and wearing it, the crown popped out when I went to reset the time. I gently reseated the crown and now the watch won’t wind.
Before that happened, the crown didn’t reliably hack the movement. It would work sometimes and not others. When pulling the crown out to the hack position, the minute hand would often jump a few minutes forward or backward. Same occurred when pressing the crown back to the wind position. This made it hard to accurately set the time.
No idea a what the movement is, but it beats at 21,600 and was giving me +11spd at a 270deg amplitude on the Timegrapher. I wanted to like this watch, but no movement and crown should have these issues so I’m returning it to Timex.
First day issues I guess
You get what you pay for has turned into you get what you pay ten times too much for!!
Not surprised by that, that movement looks like the absolute cheapest Chinese movement timex could find. A watchmaker probably won't even work on it so it's ready for the garbage in about 5 years if it even makes it that far. At this price that's absolutely unacceptable, they could've easily fitted a hand wound miyota in it for not much more.
Casio FTW :)
well its chinese isnt it. what did you expect ? swiss clockmakers ?
Timex brand, mechanical movement, sapphire crystal, 100m WR: Yay! Questionable movement, short seconds hand: boo! Still, there's a lot to like at that price.
Ya that seconds hand really should have been longer.
It is probably better to pick up the solar version, makes more sense to me at least
Thanks. Very good review.
This is the first mechanical Timex which I genuinely enjoy. The design is very reminiscent of the Khaki field while still having its own details. Great watch!
Thanks so much, great review. The competitor summary was really helpful. Changed my mind from Timex to Boldr, :-)
Great preview for mine that is coming in the mail soon. Thanks!
What is the reference of the Seiko that you show at 18:23 ?
I wonder if you can swap an ETA 2801 into this.
I think I'll be buying the solar instead.
Power reserve? Even Timex's website doesnt list it?
What's the power reserve of this watch please?
Has loom on dial but I bet it doesn’t last but a couple minutes…then what’s the point.. anyone post how long the glow lasts?
I got this one…loom doesn’t last very long and it’s +12s/day…not great…but love the look
Very cool, would love to see a review on the 36mm black version too if you were to get your hands on it!
Sorry, not super intrested in the solar quartz
@@AverageBros That's okay, thanks anyways!
I had one briefly. It may work for some but I found the dial very washed out looking and combined with the blasted case it just looked very dull.
Another brilliant video Mark, as always! Man, I REALLY wanted to love this Timex as i'm crushing the field watch vibe right now but can't find the right piece! I want: sapphire crystal, minimum 100m WR (sadly takes out the gorgeous Hammy mechanical and LOTS of other field watches - why are so many 50m???), drilled lugs, 38-40mm, not too thick (say sub 11.5mm), ideally some kind of military vibe and decent lume. You wouldn't think that was too hard to ask for when i'm open to quartz or mechanical BUT I'm really struggling mate! Any ideas? I have considered Bertucci (very cool but is there any heritage), the RZE resolute (stunning, but not a classic field watch vibe), Hammy (poor WR), Vaer (36mm too small and hear their 40mm wears large - plus again is there enough heritage/is it just a direct copy of the Hammy?), Boldr (you suggested their wears really small), CWC (prob too small and poor WR) and now this Timex (poor movement and lume). I lust after the Vertex M100 but can one justify #2.5k on a field watch? Love the Monta Triumph (in grey) and Oak and Oscar Olmsted (i think again in grey) but they're also pretty pricey and i get clobbered 20% on top for VAT import into UK. The Tudor Ranger Heritage is too large and the historic one too small - ARGH!!!!! What am i missing bro??? I need your help
I can just add to your list that Boldr venture sand storm (White dial) has a very poor lume. It seems that the other version, with a white lume, have a decent light, but the yellow lume...forget it.
@@ValerioDesiderio many thanks! I'll take that off my list!
Look into a Vaer Field Black C5.......LOVE mine. Quartz, but they now have auto versions.
Timex has a 36mm version: sapphire, 36mm, 10mm thick,
@@mmmmmmm3246 what is the watch called?
Bien Timex 👍🏽👍🏽
It's a sea gull movement
It looks like Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical White witch i have...
Yes, but without the goofy huge lugs
114.50 on amazon right now
😎✌⌚
What kind of movement is it? Selitta?
Unspecified Chinese movement
The Sellita movement alone without the watch retails around 200$. Timex tend to use cheap Chinese movements or some decent Japanese ones on occasions.
@@AverageBros Thats too bad..
@@AverageBros Odd they won’t say. Rumors were they used a Chinese Seagull movement in the Marlin.
Lol. A real swiss movement alone cost more than this crappy chinese watch.
I wanted to like this, but a Timex quartz Expedition looks the same and is more practical. Given the no name movement I think I'll pass For less money, you can get an Islander field watch with a reliable NH-38 Japanese work horse movement. For another hundred bucks, you can get a Hamilton Khaki Field (gray market).
Is it pure mechanical watch/ hand winding system...??
Yeah
@@AverageBros is it value for money..??
How is your overt experience...??
Which type of movement has been installed...??
Any problem which have faced...??
@@VarunKumar-iv3bn unspecified movement, super cheap, feels cheap, runs as you would expect for the price
One should buy this...????
Just wish it had a date
I don't mind whether it's Hardlex or Sapphire crystal the most important is that the watch is automatic no need to do Manual winding it's kinda hassle.
Bulova hack? Noooo timex
Does the 'Expedition' refer to the one to find where these are made?
This is one helluva wimpy, milksop offering. They even give you a handkerchief, in case mommy forgot to pack one.
Bah!
Seems like it’s better to spend $100 more and get the Hamilton Field Mech.
I rather spend a bit more and get the Hamilton Khaki Mechanical or Automatic at 38mm, which I have already done.
Come on Timex. A Chinese copy of the Hamilton mechanical field watch and Bulova Hack. You can buy a Bulova Hack for $20 cheaper.
How is a watch that is automatic, thicker, with a mineral crystal, and 30m of water resistance at all comparable to this? You can't compare this at all to the Bulova Hack.
@@caomhan84 true the Timex has a cheap chinese Seagull movement and the Bulova has a japanese Myota automatic movement for less money. Or for just $100 more you can get a swiss made Hamilton. The Timex should be selling for under $200.
@@JR-gp2zk You're really going to quibble over $29? Look, it's not comparable at all to the Bulova Hack. You can't compare automatics to hand-wind mechanicals. Second, if you want to compare specs it has superior specs.
Now it's not comparable to the movement in the Hamilton. I'm not going to argue that. But the movement that's in it is fine. I have several of the mechanical Marlins and it's a fine, reasonably accurate movement. And honestly they've built it very well. I was surprised when I opened the box. This is the sort of thing they should have been doing all along with their automatics in the Marlin line. This thing makes their automatic Marlins look ridiculously overpriced. Those watches are made out of thin steel cases, the movement rattles, they have an acrylic crystal and the finishing isn't great. So I hope that this watch is a sign of things to come. Now that they've proven they can make it.
Of course, there is also nothing wrong with the miyota movement in the Bulova. It's an old movement and it's a workhorse. But it's also $15 if you're going to buy it on its own. That it's not too much of a difference between the Chinese movement in this watch.
Buy the Bulova instead! Why is timex dodgy about what movement is in this watch? What is it?
Absolutely, and Bulova tells you what movement is in the watch and it winds and hacks,or you can buy the Hamilton and avoid the other "stuff"
Pros, Sapphire crystal Cons everything else. It might be cheapish but no thanks. Cheaper Seiko Snk809 cons mineral glass , pros everything else
Timex have the worst reliability of any brand ever made. Worse than Vostok.
They go to the makers of. Watches like cadizen, which is comparable quality, same movement, sapphire crystal and "sells" for way under 100:00 dollars and say make me 100 thousand fort ten dollars a piece, slap Timex on it and sell them for 229.00 dollars a piece here
Why is timex so dodgy about what movement is in this watch? Buy the Bulova!
"Why is timex so dodgy about what movement" -- Because it's crap.
what a lazy review. really would have been nice to see and know what the movement is. oh well.
You want him to remove the caseback? Good luck getting anyone to do that on a brand new watch.
Yah, what a Tool
No jewels, not worth enough to even service, throw away watch. So much for eco friendly. The beanie babies of watch collectors.
I don't understand the appeal that this brand has for some RUclipsrs. It's just a crappy Chinese watch.
