  • @TomSistermans
    @TomSistermans 5 лет назад +898

    Let's face it, Switzerland is just really hard to conquer... I believe one reason they weren't invaded in either world wars was because everyone knew it was just going to be a waste of resources, the mountains are just terrible to move through, and I believe Swiss defence policy isn't focussed on winning but making it as hard as possible for the invading force to conquer Switzerland... Like... They would just blow up every form of access to the country and retreat to the mountains for a guerilla war. Kind of the best thing for them to do, considering their neighbours' higher military potential...

The reason however that Germany always went through Belgium is because of the relatively flat landscape that allows large scale troop movement and a closer distance to Paris, aside from that, generals at the time knew that movement and conquering is hard in the mountains, that's why the Carpathian front, the Alpine front and the Caucasus front generally stood completely still even through the Brusilov offensive and the millions of battles at the Isonzo river. Switzerland was neutral because Germany and France allowed them to, because they knew conquering Switzerland would be a huge pain in the ass.

    I know it may be very complicated to take into account such things. However, the type of warfare adopted by either side would be very important. If the Swiss adopted a guerrilla approach its highly likely the Germany would lose in the longs run. Russia in Grozny (Urban) and many powers in Afghanistan (Mountainous) are good examples of this.

    To give people from other continents some context as to why both of these militaries are in a rather poor status right now, because West Europeans all are at peace here at the moment. So, there's no point in arming eachother.
    And for those genuisses who believe we should upgrade our militaries because Europe is being "invaded" by Muslims; the 8 million population of Switzerland is made out of roughly 2 million foraigners. Most of them could be technically seen as 'economic migrants' of all origin. Yet we don't face major issues in our country right now and are still capable of preserving our culture.
    If your country has difficulties on dealing with migrants at the moment, maybe you should follow our example of how to handle them peacefully -- just a suggestion...
    If you still have questions, you can just ask me. I can explain you in full detail why it works. After all, Muslims and Africans are not the first refugees we had to adress in our long history. ;)

      Nope, that doesn't include 2nd generation, since everybody that is born by in Switzerland residing parents (foreign or not) are born Swiss.
      Of course not, but their numbers have definitely significantly increased over the last few years. However, the largest amount of immigrants are still from other (mostly neighbouring) European countries. That's also still the case in countries like Germany and even Sweden. If you don't believe me, you can look it up. Every country has its own statistics on that.
      Just the way immigrants from other continents get treated highly differs, which leads to the differing results...

    • @_sky_3123
      @_sky_3123 5 лет назад +2

      @@BanBootlicking 1.65 million, 85% of the total immigrants in Switzerland came from Europe, not the Middle East or Africa. It is far easier for Switzerland to assimilate an ethnic German than an Arab. And a difference in performance of different ethnic groups is in large part due to their biological IQ capabilities. Thus you will not be able to preserve your culture if you, for example, let in 2 million Somalians etc.

Secondly, the Soviet regime led by Stalin absolutely did not spare their soldiers and people in general. Therefore, the USSR suffered such losses. This cannot be said about modern Germany.
    The Swiss army will have to fight in the conditions of complete superiority of Germany in the air, in tanks, artillery. Switzerland has no modern air defense systems. This is the Swiss army will suffer greater losses than the German.

      You forget one important point: Most Swiss are proud patriots and would not hestiate to defend their country to the last drop of blood. The Germans have been indoctrinated over decaded to feel ashamed for their country and to supress any pride of national achivments, even waving the nation flag is frouned upon. Such a war would be lost for the Germans before the first shot is fired. PS: I have lived in both countries.

    I feel like Switzerland gets given this sort of mystique that it probably doesn't deserve.
    I did happen to know a guy who worked in Swiss military HQ in the 80s (he was transferred there from the armoured corps) and he told me that the Swiss Army held a series of war games back then to try to figure out if their defenses could reasonably be expected to hold out against German or French attack. The answer was that they figured Switzerland would last between a couple of days and a week until most of Switzerland's major cities were taken (though it would take a lot longer to dig the Swiss Army out of the Alps, if the invader even bothered to try).
    Based on this, Swiss defense spending was reduced pretty substantially, particularly after the end of the Cold War.
    Now, German defense spending has gone down a fair bit since then too, so who knows if that might even things out. But I think the estimate in the video is a bit shorter than what the Swiss defense community itself would predict.
    I would caveat this by saying I don't know how much enemy preparation is assumed in the estimate above.

      He said mountains AND forests, the Ardennes are flat, Swiss forests are very steep because they go up and down with the mountains, most of the alps is full of forests the lack of vegetation you see in pictures only starts when over 2000 meters above sea level.

    It would be interesting to apply this scenario to Germany and Switzerland circa 1940. Air dominance is less a factor in mountainous terrain, witness American dominance in Afghanistan, and earlier Soviet dominance.
