      I second or third that! Thank you!
      After reading all the comments, I am starting to think another transmission option exits that will accept most of the parts in this video! I am thinking of the ZF60 bolted in the early 90s to L98 SBC Camaros and corvettes!
      Again my memory is all over the map these days, but didn't these early black label ZF60 had to have their input shafts changed so you could use them with LS motors? I am thinking L98 is the same as a first generation SBC so it should work!

    There is some great info here but I think it is still simpler to seek out a World Class T5 from a Camaro and save the cost and possible misalignment issues of an adapter. For my 1970 C-10, I used a Camaro WC T5 and was able to bolt it directly to my original bell housing. The Camaro T5 is tougher to find but they are out there if you spend some time looking.

    • @AustinCoulson
      @AustinCoulson  3 года назад +3

      I agree it is easier to do the swap as you suggested. The Ford WCT5, specifically the 92+ years are quite a bit stronger with higher nickel content and carbon fiber synchros. They are also quite a bit easier to find for most people and usually cheaper. I thought this video may be helpful to people that are running a little more power from their 350 than the Camaro T5 could handle. Glad you are running a T5 in your C10, that is a really fun setup, and the 68-72 C10's and K5s are one of my favorite looking Chevys.

Pulled the plugs in the middle of the creek, cranked the starter, shot tons of water out, reinstalled them and it ran perfectly afterwards. Watched another guy overheat one until it locked the motor solid. after a couple hours it cooled, made a loud cracking noise, then it restarted and ran perfectly (with creek water in the radiator and a raw egg to seal the radiator leak). I put a T-5 from a '86 Chevy S-10, 2WD pickup in my '53 Chevy pickup with the original 6 banger engine. The T-5 has the same bolt pattern, just drill the holes to a 1/2 inch, uses same release bearing, same pilot bearing, but not the same clutch disc. The biggest thing is, you have to change the rear end to open drive shaft and differential. With the overdrive 5th gear it's like a different truck, and it looks like it came in the truck. 5 gears sure beats 3.

      There is no adjustability between the engine-bellhousing-adapter-transmission, the bell housing is centered with sleeves on the engine, the hotrodworks adapter centers the transmission to the bell housing with tapered bolts that come with the kit. The pilot bushing verifies the final centering

      Correct. Using that trans will make the swap easier, however the Ford T5 (post 1990) has carbon fiber liners on the synchros and increased nickel content in the gears which IMO makes it a much better candidate behind a SBC (and they are easier to find, at least where I live). I have , however known many guys who have ran the v6 GM T5 without issues.

    Great video man!
    I’m looking up info on manual swapping my 94 f body LT1. As I understand the LT1 is same as SBC so the setup shown in the video would bolt directly to a LT1? What would be best T5 to find? I have a T5 In a 91 s10 2.5 4 cylinder lying around but not sure if it’s a good option.
    T56 is worth more than this car so not an option right now. I’m sure a t5 would do fine behind a stock LT1.

      The block is the same (at least from my memory) so no issues there. The S10 T5 is a boat anchor, only useful in low hp applications as it is weaker and has different gearing. You'll want a World Class T5 from a 92-95 Ford Mustang if possible as it has higher nickel content on the gears and carbon fiber clutches as well as the perfect gear ratio for your F Body, but any Mustang T5 should be fine if you keep it under 300hp.

      I have seen it done, but I don't know if an adapter is required. I believe the s-10 T5 came on both the 4cyl and the 4.3, and have heard that you must run the 4.3 T5 if you put it behind a small block as the 4cyl one is weak. The 4.3 should have the same bellhousing as the older small blacks so I would imagine that would be straight forward to swap. I have heard that even the 4.3 T5 isn't as strong as the WC T5 that came behind the last generation Fox body mustangs, but I don't have any data to back that up, just hearsay. I am not sure what manual trans came in the Silverados as i've never seen a manual one.

      @codyhaynes4471 4 года назад

      Are you saying you have a bellhousing you are wanting to bolt on to a new trans? I do not think any of the LS transmissions would work for that, they are all over 4 bolts between the bellhousing and the trans itself I believe. Any LS transmission with the bellhousing on it will have the correct bellhousing bolt pattern to properly mate to a old small block. What I do not know is if you will have input shaft and starter clearance issues. I think the LS transmissions have more input shaft sticking out away from the bellhousing. Someone correct me If I am wrong. The NV3500 is the manual transmission that came with 4.8 and 6.0 Silverados as well as the 4.3 S10s. It has the 90* bellhousing that will bolt up to a old small block. Those transmissions were 10 spline I believe, you would have to get the correct clutch and flywheel for that. The NV3500 Silverado transmissions are obviously tougher, but I know that BetterOlds here on RUclips has used a NV3500 out of an S10 on his 5.3 and it has worked well. A t56 would be ideal, but it will cost you dearly. Again, I do not know any starter or input shaft length clearances you might run into, but the bellhousing will bolt up, minus the additional hole straight up on the LS bellhousings that do not exist on the Gen 1 small blocks.
      Good luck

    • @AustinCoulson
      @AustinCoulson  5 лет назад +1

      Yes it's a Ford trans from a 92 5.0 mustang. The slip yoke is the Ford and was left on it when I got the trans. I did have to shorten the driveshaft, so I took the slip yoke and the stock Chevy driveshaft to my local driveshaft shop and they swapped the front yoke, cut and balanced it for 160$. I'm not sure what motor you have in your IROC-Z, but some people have expressed concern over higher hp on the T5s. I'm running a 305 with FITECH fuel injection and an edelbrock intake so it's still under 250hp I'm sure, but a built 350 may be pushing the limits of the trans. The 93 is a good T5 and I'm not mistaken it had the highest hp rating and carbon fiber clutches, but if I were you, I'd do some googling before digging in especially if you are adding power later. That being said I LOVE THIS TRANS SWAP! THIS Camaro screams.

    • @limabravo6065
      @limabravo6065 5 лет назад

      ACtheCarGuy / my 350 is basically a stock vortec 350 with a dual plane intake and an Edelbrock 600 cfm carb. The rating from summit is 255 hp and 330 tq. • @AustinCoulson
      @AustinCoulson  5 лет назад

      @@limabravo6065 I'm not familiar with that bell housing but my only concern would be the distance that the transmission sits behind the motor. The bell housing and adapter run just under 340$ for both, so for 40$ difference it would only be worth it if you didn't have to build a spacer to move the trans back. The HP and TQ specs sound like its right on the edge of what the T5 is rated for but I'm sure on the mustang forums you'll find lots of guys with more HP on the stock trans so it might be fine since it won't be abused.

      Well from what I can tell if I remove the ford input shaft and bearing retainer and swap those part out for the gm parts from an f-body everything should be good to go. As far as I can see the T5 in the mustang and that from the Camaro are the same so far as length goes, and the shifter is in the same spot. What I’m thinking I can do for the output shaft is have the ford slip yoke installed on my drive shaft. The ujoint cup sizes are the same. • @AustinCoulson
      @AustinCoulson  5 лет назад

      @@limabravo6065 I think you are on the right track overall. If the trans is the same length and the u joints are the same size you can swap the slip yoke out and there is always a little wiggle room on slip yokes since they slide back and forth with the suspension so .5 in either way should be fine. If you swap the input shaft and bearing retainer to the GMC style you should he good on the length but you will have to use a different clutch disc and pilot bushing than the ones in the video (I think the shorter input shaft is a 28 spline, so I think you'd use an s-10 clutch)

    Is there any way to make a mustang t5 work on a ls based platform im doing a 5.3 swap in my 89 and would like to keep the t5 thats in it

      Yes it's possible, but you would have to take it easy on the T5 as it's only rated to 305hp, and I would assume the LS would be cranking out more than that. If no one makes an adapter for it, you would have to do that yourself. It can be quite time consuming to fabricate those from scratch. I would look into a T56 swap instead as it's stronger and there are plenty of adapters around for it.

      Do everything he did with bellhousing, throwout bearing, bearing retainer and bellhousing adapter. You will need a 621 reproduction bellhousing to clearance the large LS flywheel and a ten spline clutch and corresponding flywheel. I would look at the Sachs 1050 flywheel, it came on the 4.8 and 6.0 manual Silverados. It is very thick, an inch I think, so it will help make up some distance you lost with the bell adapter. I believe the clutch that came on those Silverados were 10 spline so they should work on the Mustang t5, if not, try an old BBC Chevelle clutch. They used to be 10 spline in the early 70s I think and will match up to the flywheel clutch pattern on the Sachs 1050.
      Another option would be to use a GM t5. If you got a World Class one out of F body before 1993, it will be the GM bell pattern so no adapter. It will also have the correct length bearing retainer and you would not have to buy a special pilot bearing. The input shaft would also be the higher spline count that would give you access to more LS clutches. The major downside to the GM F body t5s is the twist in the transmission. Once you bolt on the straight 621 bell, the tailhousing will be turned 18 degrees clockwise. An option to fix this it to get an S10 t5 tailhousing, but I chose to just make a shifter rod with a bend in it and save the money.
      Both the GM and the Ford t5 can work, it is just a matter of what you want to replace.
      I hope this is helpful and not too late.

    Awesome video! It is helping me get through my swap on my 87 Monte. Only problem I’m having is I bought the 2120 adapter and a 1352-027-003 retainer and the retainer diameter is too large and does not fit in the adapter properly, do you have any thoughts on this ?

      This is the Bearing retainer I use, it fits on the Ford T5 and lets the Hydraulic TOB fit over it. I am not familiar with the 2120 adapter is that for the TOB or something else?

    • @AustinCoulson
      @AustinCoulson  4 года назад

      Oh I see now, the 2120 is the Hotrodworks adapter. I thought that your TOB wasn't sliding over the bearing retainer shaft. It sounds like the outer portion of the bearing retainer is coming into contact with the 2120. I have seen this when using the Ford bearing retainer. If you are going to keep using the Ford retainer, you will need to grind down the 2120 to allow it to slide over. Keep in mind, you won't be able to use the hydraulic TOB I use because the shaft diameter on the retainer is larger as well. I recommend using the S10 retainer I listed since it is only 30$. If you want to run standard clutch linkage and keep the Ford retainer, it would be a lot cheaper, but the linkage might be annoying to get dialed in. If you do grind away to make the Ford retainer fit, the adapter will still be centered because it self centers on the bolts, not the retainer. Good Luck! Reply back if you get stuck again

    Do you have to use the chevy bearing retainer? And awesome video!

    • @AustinCoulson
      @AustinCoulson  3 года назад

      You don't have you, you can use any retainer you want, you just may have to modify it. I went with the Chevy retainer because it has a smaller outer diameter to let me use the hydraulic TOB I wanted. If you keep the linkage style TOB, then you could use ford forks and a ford TOB with the chevy clutch, it would just take some adjustments and maybe some shortening of the retainer sleeve. The benefit would be that it's a lot cheaper for normal linkage than a Hydro TOB

      @@tylerbroadbent3148 that sounds like an awesome swap. The Hydro TOB is great for a smooth clutch feel, but the real benefit is what you mentioned; space space space. It takes up almost none as it's all inside the bell housing and you have no linkage, just a hose to route. Good luck on the project, and you should definitely post a video of it to RUclips if you are able

    Hey I'm trying to do the same for my firebird i got the full swap from a 80s Camaro
    Here is my problem, maybe you can help me with some pointer
    The flywheel don't match with the crankshaft, the flywheel is smaller, i read that it's because of the different generations in the 350 Chevy engine
    Can you shine a light on this problem?
    Thanks brother

    • @AustinCoulson
      @AustinCoulson  4 года назад

      There are a few different gm small block flywheels. Off the top of my head I believe some generations were internally balances or externally balanced. I also believe there are two different weights of flywheels so you have to be careful you don't install the wrong one. Shoot me an email at acthecarguy@gmail.com with as much info as you can and pictures if possible and I'll see if I can help

      @@privateprivate1865 if you are doing this swap on the cheap, you might consider using a traditional style clutch fork with either mechanical linkage or hydraulic master-slave setup. Would save you up to 600$ as the hydraulic throw out bearing is the most expensive part of this swap, often more expensive than the used transmission
