  • The Byzantine Cataphract. A fan favorite unit that players adored since the release of age of kings. One of the coolest looking units in the game with a special bonus attack against infantry good resistance against camel units and big amount of hit points with mobility and fast attack speed. The Cataphract has been reskinned few times during the years but not a lot has changed. Today we are going to see how historically correct is the Cataphract unit. In the Byzantine Empire or Roman Empire or Empire of the Greeks as Westerners used to call it gradually abandoned its legions which consisted of the Legionaries and by the 7th century focused more on heavy cavalry. This is where the cataphracts made their appearance in the Roman ranks.
Cataphracts are anti-infantry cavalry units with low pierce armor and attack, but resist anti-cavalry attacks. All these qualities make them very distinct from the Knight line. As such, despite both being heavy cavalry, they play different and often complementary roles. Cataphracts in the Castle Age are mostly seen only against Native American civilizations, Goths, and Hindustanis, which rely on archer-resistant infantry. Byzantines do not have any bonuses to get a Castle up earlier than most civilizations, and the high cost also limits their usage in the Castle Age. Cataphracts really need their Imperial Age upgrades to shine.
    What are you thoughts?

There was mod for HD version of game where Cataphracts had skin more resembling their real life version, I remember using it simply put bigger horse armor and they had spears, it would be really cool in my opinion if Cataphracts had like onetime spear charge mechanic and they would regain spear after long time like in comparison to Coustilier 60sec, they would regain it in 120-180sec?

Yes, that would also come to terms with their real life use, the shock cavalry. One big attack to break the enemy formation. I don't know which skin you are referring to but I will take a look

Historically accurate Cataphracts would be far too OP. Basically Boyars with trample damage and charge bonus.

I doubt all cataphracts were left handed. But as a lefty myself, I support that.

Generally the terms "ring mail" and "plate mail" aren't used when discussing historical accurate armor. Maille or chain mail is the correct term. Rather than plate, the Cataphracts are I think supposed to be wearing iron lamellar, although it's not particularly well represented. I agree that a reskin with the armor from the centurion horse with the old model would look better.

True, I used wrong terms especially describing the horse's armor. And the pic too.
      But you get the point.

Old version and new version look exactly the same to me. If it was the old one before definitive edition I'd agree it looks different, but the ones shown on this video honestly look like the same DE skin.
