As much as it s always painful to watch Steffi loose, as I'm a massive Steffi's fan, I can only give it to Monica for her amazing tennis and mental quality. Martina Navratilova and Steffi changed tennis because of their athleticism and Monica changed tennis because of her power on both sides. I think Monica and Serena are the strongest player mentally that as ever been their shots making on important points always made the difference. You can see how Monica inspired Serena. It is such a shame...I'm so pissed off because of Hamburg we did not have the Federer-Nadal match up that Steffi and Monica were going to be... we could have had so many great finals/matches...Tennis was boring after Hamburg Steffi worked so hard to match up Monica that when Monica was gone, let's be honest, there was not much more competition for a while... the French final in 92 is for me the best. Seles was so much faster and fitter here. That is why she could hang and beat Steffi. The stabbing really messed her up in the head. It is amazing she managed to score a win over Steffi after the stabbing 40 pounds overweight. Legends both.

Say what you want about these two. Absolutely unbelievable players and set the bench mark for and style for the womens game. However I still think Graf would have dominated eventually. Even before the stabbing you could see Graff was adapting to Monica's game and absorbing her shots better. Horrific things happened to seles and she would have clearly been her rival but let's not forget steffi had a huge op on her spine during her career and there was the whole blackmail/fraud thing with her Dad etc which had an affect on her personal life and play so who knows what both of them could have done had the stabbing and operation not happened etc. We can go back and forth about who was better etc but the people that have played them both and some of the greatest players off all time consider Graf to be the greatest female player of all time in terms of adaption and all around play.
I agree with most of what you said. However, I think at this point Serena is now the best, particularly in longevity and peak level of play. Still, it’s a fine analysis of two legendary players and more people should be as fair as you.
Just watching these highlights - I can’t help but think that Steffi could have played her topspin backhand a little more. Yes, her slice backhand is a great shot, no question, but when rallying with Seles here it’s clear that Seles was grooved to it. The high-bounce court and warm conditions would have enhanced the topspin shot as well. Anything to break Monica’s rhythm up a bit more and hopefully get a weaker/shorter shot that she could attack with her forehand.
Monika was so much better than Steffi in those years prior to stabbing in the spring of 1993. Steffi lost so many matches, finals especially that she played against Monika from 1989 to 1993. Monika was an engima for Steffi. Untill so called "mad" fan of Graf did something that was unheard of and unimaginable nor it happened anywhere, anytime in any sport, before or after.... As much as it s always painful to watch Steffi loose, as I'm a massive Steffi's fan, I can only give it to Monica for her amazing tennis and mental quality. Martina Navratilova and Steffi changed tennis because of their athleticism and Monica changed tennis because of her power on both sides. I think Monica and Serena are the strongest player mentally that as ever been their shots making on important points always made the difference. You can see how Monica inspired Serena. It is such a shame...I'm so pissed off because of Hamburg we did not have the Federer-Nadal match up that Steffi and Monica were going to be... we could have had so many great finals/matches...Tennis was boring after Hamburg Steffi worked so hard to match up Monica that when Monica was gone, let's be honest, there was not much more competition for a while... the French final in 92 is for me the best. That’s why she was stabbed, because a Steffi fan was sick of waiting year after year of seing Graf being a distant no.2. Sorry but every tennis expert have said that the stabbing changed Tennis history and at this point every experts have said that Serena is the goat. Steffi even with her main rival out of the picture still won less slams then Serena Williams, how pathetic is that. Lol

Like I said with Seles out of the tour everything changed. Sorry but Seles has destroyed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario many times so yeah that 1994 AO is nothing special. Outside of the tournament Steffi Graf had many struggles like I said in 1993 FO and WB, as well as the rest of 1994. Heck even in the 1995 US open a fat Monica Seles still pushed Steffi Graf to the limit. You know the problem with the stabbing is not only Gunter Parche but it’s also the rest of the Steffi Graf fans who downplayed it as meaningless, which is exactly the same thing as a police man doing something horrible and the other policemen watching it just like right now with George Floyd. If Steffi Graf fans simply had said something like “we will never know” Instead of Steffi Graf is the goat and Seles and the stabbing are meaningless, Seles fans would have not even hated Steffi Graf or her fans. But justice prevailed because Serena Williams came and now she is the goat and Steffi Graf fans are in the past. Serena surpassed Steffi despite Steffi having an inflated slam tally without her main rival. Also as far as many people go Seles was only getting better in 1993 and would have had her best years to come. Without her on the tour Steffi Graf gained confidence because she knew nobody could stop her and of course even her draws change so no without the Seles stabbing Steffi Graf probably wouldn’t have had the record you were talking about. The point is in early 1993 if you make a poll on who will end up greater Seles or a Graf 90% of people will take Seles and that’s why she was stabbed in the first place. She was catching Graf’s slam tally while being five years younger and at the 1993 AO she proved that she was still improving. sorry! I am even ready to say “both are amazing we will never know” but unfortunately I have never heard a Graf fan even have enough class to say that.

@Max E With Monica out, it changed all of the draws and also it gave Steffi more confidence as she knew she had no main rival so it's no surprise that she had a great run after the stabbing. Starting in 1990 when Monica became a top player she led Steffi 4-3 in overall h2h including 3-1 in slam finals. She also won 7 of the last 8 slams she had entered. Steffi was a clear no.2 and that's why a psycho fan of hers did what he did.
I would love to know the stat for unforced errors in this match. Could you imagine these two playing in todays game? They would dominate. I feel so bad that Monica's career was cut short by that lunatic. She was on track to be an all time great.

Seles hit more winners in every single department.....Seles hit more aces (7-1), more FOREHAND WINNERS, more backhand winners, hit her serve harder, won more 1 serve points, won more second serve points, broke Grafs serve FIVE times and lost her serve once, and hit nearly TWICE as many winners in the tournament.
Simply better in EVERY SINGLE DEP,ARTMENT.....

Say what you want about these two. Absolutely unbelievable players and set the bench mark for and style for the womens game. However I still think Graf would have dominated eventually. Even before the stabbing you could see Graff was adapting to Monica's game and absorbing her shots better. Horrific things happened to seles and she would have clearly been her rival but let's not forget steffi had a huge op on her spine during her career and there was the whole blackmail/fraud thing with her Dad etc which had an affect on her personal life and play so who knows what both of them could have done had the stabbing and operation not happened etc. We can go back and forth about who was better etc but the people that have played them both and some of the greatest players off all time consider Graf to be the greatest female player of all time in terms of adaption and all around play.
I agree with most of what you said. However, I think at this point Serena is now the best, particularly in longevity and peak level of play. Still, it’s a fine analysis of two legendary players and more people should be as fair as you.

Just watching these highlights - I can’t help but think that Steffi could have played her topspin backhand a little more. Yes, her slice backhand is a great shot, no question, but when rallying with Seles here it’s clear that Seles was grooved to it. The high-bounce court and warm conditions would have enhanced the topspin shot as well. Anything to break Monica’s rhythm up a bit more and hopefully get a weaker/shorter shot that she could attack with her forehand.

Monika was so much better than Steffi in those years prior to stabbing in the spring of 1993. Steffi lost so many matches, finals especially that she played against Monika from 1989 to 1993. Monika was an engima for Steffi. Untill so called "mad" fan of Graf did something that was unheard of and unimaginable nor it happened anywhere, anytime in any sport, before or after.... That was probably the only way to stop Monika. In my mind that is why Graf's career will always be, not by her fault of course, tainted and marked us "unclean". The world of sport has to aknowledge that fact! That is why the successes of Serena Williams and Martina Navratilova are still number one, in my opinion. Monika was simply better player than Steffi!
