Little did she know she just won her last grand slam singles title. 1999 alone would emerge Serena and Davenport as two big power hitters who would hasten Hingis’s departure from the game. Graf was one of the last great players from the previous era and she would win the French (against Hingis in a contentious, drama-packed, controversy-filled 3-set final) and retire before the U.S. Open. Hingis would retain her #1 ranking by year's end but not before experiencing pain and heartache at the three remaining grand slam tournaments for different reasons.

This match was a microcosm of what would happen to Hingis's career in the months and years to come. She was being run all over the court by a taller harder hitting opponent, relying on her tremendous groundstrokes and court sense to pull out the victory. As the power era emerged however, her style became too difficult to sustain.
@Max E Ashleigh Barty has a tremendous serve and rare power for a player of her physical stature. Henin had unbelievable quickness and one of the best backhands maybe of all-time. These 2 players had games that made up for size disadvantages.
I don’t agree at all, she lost to herself before losing to the competition. Lost confidence and purpose on her game, became to passive and error prone; hen geniality fade away after 99. If the likes of Myskina, Kerber, Halep and other untalented players could win in the power era so could best Hingis
She was flawless until she left the game due to injuries. When she returned, she was never the same. She didn't absorb power as well and her forehand would land much shorter.
I think it's very sad that after Martina retired very few of the next generation attempted to incorporate her brilliant net game. Instead, her long term rival Chrissie, became the template with her two hander and metronomic strokes. With a few notable exceptions, much of the women's game then became a procession of all out hitting, with the volley all but extinct. Venus Williams could have become a brilliant S&V exponent especially at Wimbledon. Today I can see the younger players moving more to the net, such as Barty, Raducanu and Fernandes. They exhibit a more rounded game with more options than say the likes of Sabalenka who basically just tries to blast everything and the rigid style of Pliskova.

Hingis is not intimidated by the Graf forehand. In fact, unlike most players who over play Graf’s backhand, Hingis makes the rallies less predictable. Her shot selection is superb. Had Hingis kept her head and emotions under control like she does here, she surely would've hoisted that French Open trophy a few months later.
There was too much hostility and she wanted badly and created too big pressure. She was also not tactically prepared for such possibility which was very likely. Her mother let her live in that pink baloon of her own instead of warning her that she is not loved by all. And she was arrogant indeed which is one of the reasons I admired her confidence and honesty, she was so funny and sarcastic although rude with many remarks. Good match from both. If you don't know how a healthy Graf moves you won't notice that her footwork here was really not up to her standards, especially at the end. To me it looks like her pain in her knee got worse as the match progressed. Martina beat Steffi in the end by moving a lot better.

The hostile French crowd against Hingis played a part in her unraveling in Paris against Graf. Everyone knows Hingis would've ended up beating Graf in straight sets and win the French title she so desperately wanted. Not even McEnroe at his ugliest deserved the sh*tty treatment the French crowd heaped on Hingis. She let that controversial line call against her contribute to her meltdown. Once the French crowd got on her case and wouldn't let go, that was the end for Hingis.
I know that was a critical moment but it’s always so hard to bet against Graf. She won 22 slams for a reason, had a few great wins in that event and would have made it a real battle no matter what. Also, I don’t ever remember a player crossing the net and technically, as the commentators pointed out, she should have been defaulted for simply crossing the net as she did so she was lucky it wasn’t actually enforced. The French crowd is so tough, they brought Arantxa in ‘95 to absolute tears in the ceremony and that was for only questioning a few calls. I remember the commentators saying how unfair they were to her and how sad it was to see just how badly that had gotten to Arantxa.
Her loss was definitely provoked and ignited..her meltdown started as she was already irritated by then by only minor part of crowd, decided to lead too many battles as she felt jeopardized and lost focus and control afterwards. Graf also contributed with her disguised hostility and agression as it was clear towards end of match that Hingis looked scared of her too..nevertheless, pitty she lost but she was not prepared and let go her control and focus too easily.
@Max E Oh yes it ended up perfect for Steffi that day, and she deserved to win but tension was obvious and Steffi started to play mind games towards end of second set and also openly showed to crowd that she was enjoying, she even chanted with them during Martina's toilet break. All that made Martina feel humiliated and hurt most. Steffi also got additional kick when she sensed not just mental but also physical deterioration and played some highly inspired points where she manipulated and toyed with Martina. And then when she sensed final blood she was pushing and speeding up the game and on few occasions during final drama with umpire decided to further intimidate Hingis with agressive and pushy sentences and tone. Everything was legal and effective but there was some malicious and cruel joy from Steffi. I think despite the fact Martina insulted her in previous statements and never wanted to give her public admiration, that should not be reason for supporting almost public sadistic torture and prohibition of an 18 y old as a revenge.
@Max E i have nothing against Steffi in fact to me she is probably GOAT in womens tennis but it is a fact she used "tennis" crowd that day in her favor..see her face expressions and gestures towards crowd at the end of 2nd and beginning of 3rd set. Of course she was aware Martina would know she had good time on court while she was away and that the crowd would go even wilder upon her return. You dont see all on tv and toilet and locker room are not very far. To me, frankly, quality of match, especially considering the weather conditions and tension, was superb, but behaviour from both players was disgraceful as they were having their own personal tantrums and crowd got involved too much. P.S. I dont see how Seles and my opinion on Seles is related to this discussion.
Steffi was such a cry-baby in this match. People often forget that Steffi was a huge complainer - every time Steffi faced a player who could beat her, she always felt threatened and so she would complain every time she thought a shot was too good to be true.
I urge you to seek psychotherapy immediately you sad little turd. You don't know the first thing about Graf or how she felt and neither do any of us so keep your useless opinions to yourself.
Graf could definitely be a cry baby... even though I was a fan of hers. Those commenting below are delusional. See "Graf denies handshake to Sabatini in Tokyo." Watch any match from 1990 to 1993 against Seles. Watch Graf vs Shriver 1988 Virginia Slims Championships. While I loved Steffi... she had an attitude problem when she felt things weren't going her way. And it began in the middle of the second set in this match as well. Having said that, Hingis was far FAR worse lol.
Even though Graf is getting older and older. It's getting to the end of his career. It's still so hard for Hingis to beat Graf. They have faced each other nine times in their careers. Graf won 7 times. And came back after Graf's 97 break. They played 3 games. Graf won twice. In one, Hingis was awarded a set 6-0. On top of that, the two of them have a Grand Slam record against each other, and Hingis has never beaten Graf. Grafy always beats Hingis in tennis grand slams.
Hingis just lost in Paris because of her immaturity, she had that match on her hand, she had the weapons to defeat Graf like she proved here. That final match at Roland Garros she had won 6-2 and was serving for the match when it all happened
The hostile French crowd against Hingis also played a part in her unraveling that day. Not even McEnroe at his ugliest deserved the treatment the French crowd heaped on Hingis that day in the final. She let that controversial line call against her contribute to her meltdown. Once the French crowd got on her case and wouldn't let go, that was the end for Hingis.
That backhand down the line by Hingis....graf could only watch in awe and envy. And i thought only Serena could be so hysterically upset over calls.. Uh oh, here comes that fanatic freak Illya to the rescue 😜😜😜
She improved her fitness a lot from the summer of 99 (after those disasters at RG & WIM) and she was super fit in the next two years till Wimbledon 2001 when she injured her back and after that her feet started to trouble her a lot.
@@Fontsman Well she was not natural athlete but she really put a lot of effort in that summer of 99. I was following closely WTA Tour at that time. That is why she had so much success in 2000 but sadly for her it did not brought her any grand slam and she was in contention in all four.
Ultimately winning tournaments became a titanic challenge for her against the power hitters. She could beat any one of them on her day but having to play them in successive matches just ground down her energy levels as she would have to do a lot of hard running to chase down the drives. Australian Open in 01(?) was case in point. Venus Williams in the QF Serena in the semi and Capriati in the final. Add in the ridiculous heat at that tournament that year and she had nothing left. Even then she was on the brink but failed to close out the 2nd set. After the massive ankle injury in 03 and a couple of years away from the game, she was never likely to get back to the very top though she was still top 10 ranking. I loved watching her play doubles though. It demonstrated so much of her skill set because power was much less of a factor. And the fact she won so many doubles titles with so many different partners shows just how good a player she was.
@@Daxxxsanjuan That's no excuse. Besides, she didn't even show bad sportsmanship. She was just being a cocky teenager, no big deal. I saw countless players cross to the other side of the net over the years, but nobody ever made a fuss about it, except when an 18 year old girl did it.

@@moviefan4life166 Arancha also had another painful loss to Graf the following year at the French losing 10-8 in the third.
Why is steffi soo angry...she is a cool cutee...😎
Terrible umpiring.
You don't know the first thing about Graf or how she felt and neither do any of us so keep your useless opinions to yourself.
janjr165 Hingis was a Dirty Bitch
1999 French Open 😂😂😂
Graf could definitely be a cry baby... even though I was a fan of hers. Those commenting below are delusional. See "Graf denies handshake to Sabatini in Tokyo." Watch any match from 1990 to 1993 against Seles. Watch Graf vs Shriver 1988 Virginia Slims Championships. While I loved Steffi... she had an attitude problem when she felt things weren't going her way. And it began in the middle of the second set in this match as well. Having said that, Hingis was far FAR worse lol.
Agree
Graf was really a bad match up for Hingis. She really dominated her
You commented on the wrong video :)
@@fundhund62 I know.
Finally defeat by martina pretty hingis, steffie crazy, graf in final
Even though Graf is getting older and older. It's getting to the end of his career.
It's still so hard for Hingis to beat Graf.
They have faced each other nine times in their careers.
Graf won 7 times.
And came back after Graf's 97 break. They played 3 games. Graf won twice. In one, Hingis was awarded a set 6-0.
On top of that, the two of them have a Grand Slam record against each other, and Hingis has never beaten Graf.
Grafy always beats Hingis in tennis grand slams.
Στο 13:43 τι φωνάζει η κατέ;
Was this before or after The French Open debacle?
Hingis just lost in Paris because of her immaturity, she had that match on her hand, she had the weapons to defeat Graf like she proved here. That final match at Roland Garros she had won 6-2 and was serving for the match when it all happened
@@odaniscabrales3876 she lost anyway, so whats the point

That backhand down the line by Hingis....graf could only watch in awe and envy. And i thought only Serena could be so hysterically upset over calls.. Uh oh, here comes that fanatic freak Illya to the rescue 😜😜😜
Hingis never really worked to improve her conditioning very much and when the bigger hitters came to the fore she was run ragged and overpowered.
She improved her fitness a lot from the summer of 99 (after those disasters at RG & WIM) and she was super fit in the next two years till Wimbledon 2001 when she injured her back and after that her feet started to trouble her a lot.
She lacked physical resilience over a long tour. Ultimately her body rebelled.
@@Fontsman Well she was not natural athlete but she really put a lot of effort in that summer of 99. I was following closely WTA Tour at that time. That is why she had so much success in 2000 but sadly for her it did not brought her any grand slam and she was in contention in all four.
@@zoppkv2060 Very true!! She was fabulous in 2000 but really unlucky..it just shows how super tough competition it was then..
Steffi has no match to Hingis!😜😜😜
She had 7.
Watch the FO 99 final for instance, boy.
SELES PLAYS BETTER THAN GRAF
yes yes yes
🤣🤣🤣 22 vs 9.
Yes, that‘s why even #1 Seles was 2-5 win/loss against Steffi.
Hp pak kata.
Virus DO.
Remember when Hingis cried because she lost the French Open to Graf
She cried because thousands of people in the french crowd found it appropriate to boo a 18 year old off the court.
fundhund62 she was booed based on her behavior and bad her sportsmanship
@@Daxxxsanjuan That's no excuse.
Besides, she didn't even show bad sportsmanship. She was just being a cocky teenager, no big deal. I saw countless players cross to the other side of the net over the years, but nobody ever made a fuss about it, except when an 18 year old girl did it.
fundhund62 crossing the net to check lines because she lost the point is bad sportsmanship! She lost just deal with it

Although it's one of the greatest shots ever produced in tennis, the Graf FH is ugly lol.
I agree, her backhand also. She also had power because her movements were so ungracious and clumsy. She never learned the technique of the strokes. Only her backhand volley was admirable!!!
Graf looked so old and worn out here....and she was only 29.
She looked young again in June 1999.
And Hingis looked very, very old… 😂

In their matches take into consideration 2 matches from 95. To me most strange result was their match from Philadelphia 98, I would love to see that match!
