so glad this finally posted!!!! I remember watching this match in college. pretty prophetic. a mostly unheralded SW, unseeded, playing the World #1 her first time and in a QF. She 6-1s her in the 2nd, has Hingis throwing her racquet in the 3rd and had 2 match points at 5-3. Inexperience showed up but I'm sure Martina saw the writing on the wall here. Epic match.
C'mon man, only 5 GS titles???? 99.9% of players go through their entire careers wishing to even compete in a final. I think most players would kill for just 1 GS. Serena went on to become arguably the greatest of all time, but don't discount Martina's contribution to the sport, and she's still playing great doubles with Flavia Pennetta.
dinh She was something unique when she came along, and I still remember that 1997 year fondly. I always speak about Martina with respect because of her contribution in that era.
She had the most promising career ever. Winning a wimbledon throphy at age 17 is fucking sick. But sadly injuries and drug accusations didn't let her play more. But anyways she is a tennis legend.
The genius, raw talent and mastery of Martina Hingis...hard to fathom. And of all the players in the Open era, these two players, along with Maria Sharapova, showed us the greatest desire, the greatest hunger. This trio, they just really hate losing.
Injury didn't end Hingis's career...she got overpowered out of the WTA by the big hitters like Venus, Serena, Capriati, and Davenport. Hingis's footwork was pretty amazing, but her serve was a huge liability. Finesse can only take you so far. If you want to win slams, you better have powerful serves, great footwork, stamina, lethal forehand/backhand and smart defense. Serena has most of these qualities (if not all) while Hingis didn't.
The Swiss Miss beats Serena, who of course goes on to be the GOAT. Hingis is an underrated player, she did not have the physicality of other top players, just an amazing will to win, a great variety of shots and was very creative on the court. This is a perfect match as Martina was still near her prime and Serena was starting to become the force of nature she developed into.
Hingis benefited from Graf's absence, but her eventual decline began when the power players started refining their games. They basically blew Hingis off the court. Graf did so consistently, too, owning a 9-2 h2h against her.

Would have been awesome watching Graf and Serena playing Wimbledon finals another 3-5 years. Hingis and Serena at Australia for 10 years would have been incredible. And I thoroughly believe Seles would have passed Evert at the French. Interesting to see a baby version of Serena Williams here as she hadn't even been a pro for a full year yet at this tournament. Already so close to challenging the top players.
Serena wasn't "so close" in challenging the top players at the time. She started challenging the top players right off the block on the VERY FIRST main draw she ever qualified for - Serena ranked 304 beat two consecutive top-10 players (no. 7 Mary Pierce and no.4 Monica Seles) on her first main draw.
The surgical precision drop shots. The cleverly angled passing shots. The retrieval skils. These are the reasons why Hingis decapitated the competition during that time. Talent-wise, she is the greatest of them all. Her unwillingness to ride the power bandwagon meant she is out of contention during the power era. But that won't take away the fact that she is the most talented tennis player of all time.
***** I couldn't care less what kind of issues she had! Fact is, she had the best technique ingame and the greatest variety in shots... She may not be as good as Serena, but she sure as hell had the most beautiful tennis and moved really well behind the ball...
***** "Natural" she was extremely insightful and knew how to read the game, but she lacked a lot of power when the game changed with the Williams sisters... And Martina didn't have that extra step a onehander has, notice how top players who play one handed backhands always have that extra step in the court to create more angles in comparison to a typical two hander... That was Maria's best match ever, but Maria isn't near the category of Henin or Venus for that matter... Overrated, overhyped and received easy draws most of the times putting Serena in the other half, who usually has the more difficult players to face! Which reminds me, how was the beatdown Serena gave to Maria in Wimbledon a couple of weeks ago? Didn't it feel good? :)
***** Why do you call that linewomen an asian weasel type?! She was doing her fucking job! Should she be intimidated because we're talking here about Serena?! There are cameras everywhere, admitted it wasn't very clear wether it was or it wasn't. From my perspective it did look like a foot fault But to say that lineswoman was gunning for her, is just crying wolf! And Serena was blatantly lying during her interview, and one of her team members gave her a signal to "be quiet" during the interview because they signaled to her that she was in fact lying trough her teeth! "I never make any foot faults in this tournaments and suddenly I get called so many times on it, it's clear...." (sudden silence and looks up to a certain person in her management) and gives a distracted impression and finishes with "whatever, I don't know"... Hmmm.... Regarding Serena being a biological male, I never made such assumptions... I do believe she's classless and can't swallow a loss and never gives credit where credit due. Serena lost because of her own damn fault...
Serena always looked to be the more talented one of the sisters. Her game was more technically sound even though back in those days she was more erratic. Her serve was more consistent and unlikely to unravel like Venus' who served harder. Now that serve is regarded as arguably the greatest shot in tennis history.
The handshakes back then...sooooooo shady. LOL!!! Early on in her career, Serena let a lot of matches get away from her after being in winning positions. When she went on her Serena Slam tear, that's when she became the mental titan we know her to be today. This was a fun match to watch. Two legends.
htownhomie06 the one that was most upsetting was when she lost in the U.S. Open third round to spirlea, after trouncing her in the second set 6-0. thankfully, spirlea fell off of the face of the earth shortly afterword
Justin Cartwright Serena sadly is known for that regularly her handshakes aren't as sincere. It's what has surrounded her reputation, I guess to keep competition at bay.
Serena's inexperience showed when holding Hingis on few match-points and when serving for the match - today's Serena would have put the match away without even trying too hard. This footage simply shows that even tennis Greats had moments of inexperience in their rookie beginning - this is Serena's.
Yes way before her Serena ,killer on a mission taking no prisoners instinct which she lacked obvious in this match with Ms.Hingis letting her off the hook Serena allowed Hingis experience using the noise of the crowd cheering in her favor was enough to take the wind out of Serena’s cruising sail Hingis just staying alive in the match with the breeze pulled the come back off for the win a gift given by Serena for taking prisoners.
I love the exquisite shot making and brilliant placement Hingis had, all but lost with the Women's game now - began with the Williams (but to their credit since they did play in the age of strategy, they've played so long, they play more of it than the current crop, save Wozniacki), unfortunately was strengthened by Sharapova, such a boring age of just power hitting, Henin and Clijsters was truly a breath of fresh air... and today well, let's see, there is potential but the temptation to just hit your way through the game has brought dividends to the Williams and its the current status quo.
Depends. Power and range to finesse and subtilty. The combination of both is absolutely fascinating. One is boring without the other. One cannot deny that the entry into certain hallways takes the blasting down of doors which otherwise would have taken too long to open. Read between the lines.
Serena had no reply for the half volleys sent from Hingis . These half volleys are worth watchable and proved to be the reasons why Hingis won the important and deciding points during very pressure situations
I like Serena but I love Martina. Her game is all-around. She is the only female player who covers the whole court with her groundstrokes and drop shots. Arguably, she is the best female player ever. I'm glad that she is back playing doubles again and winning. She is going to make history by having the most GS wins in doubles.
Yes that's right, I agree with you, I just like Nathalie Portman because she looks like Hingis, in fact the Swiss Miss has a cute face of a show business star.
Lots of stupid: political, racial, and juvenile comments on this post. Here is the real story. What the Williams sisters reflected was a permanent" shift is women's tennis is played; power and aggressiveness. Other women had a powerful game but they were not aggressive as fast as they were. Before them the standard was to Build a point. Seles, Capriati, Graf and several others all contributed substantially to the power and aggressive game as it is now; and frankly each could have gone toe to toe with the Williams sisters, but they were the result of the prior generation. I loved watching Hingis, she has a great game....... but her primary flaw was her inability to be CONSISTENTLY aggressive and hit with pace!!! She is more of a tactician, she'd build and construct opportunities to get into an offensive position to get a point; Where as Serena would simply pound an aggressive shot for a winner!
The Williams sisters ruined female tennis just as Nadal has ruined male tennis. They should have gone into weight lifting. When they are gone, maybe true tennis will return. All those power people... Ugh. NOT what the beauty of tennis is about. Hingis had great pacing, speed, anticipation... instinct.
I appreciate your point J. You are very correct in the point of the true transition of the sport, before and after the Williams sisters. A point very much unrecognized by the American general public. On another note, Serena lost this match to a player of great skill, no disrespect to Serena's skills. To look at the way Hingis responded to the sheer athletic prowess of Serena, keep her head and win is very commendable, although Serena's hate of defeat is clearly visible. Serena showed no grace at all hardly looking at Hingis, in a career of outstanding presence this is one flaw in Serena's game. No doubt she would say she has no time for losing fairly, the game, and her accomplishments deserve as much
Serena, it was known then, confirmed today, she wasn't the most sport tennis player, thing was she was regularly like that, it wasn't a one off thing. Coping mechanism probably? Well gave her the reputation to conquer the tennis world later.
Hingis didn't win because Serena only had brute force, she won cause she had more experience. That's all. Serena should have beaten Hingis but she didn't know how to win back then at 16 yrs young.
+stevie69ful If Hingis and Williams were the same size physically, Williams would be lucky to get one point against her. Hingis was a genius and far more admirable in my opinion.
+stevie69ful Serena was and is all about brute force, intimitation tactics like no other and rudeness on and of the courts and i think that tennis has nothing to do with all of the above
Hingis was a more skilled player than the Williams sisters. It's just the damn serve and power that turned the tides and changed the game from finesse to power. Serena's built like a man and serves faster than half the men out there while Venus is tall and lanky like Althea Gibson with lots of power as well. Most of the players on the WTA are just a bunch of short skinny little white girls, like Vesnina who got her ass whooped by Serena today. Only a handful of players can come close to the power of the Williams sisters which is why they're so successful even today at their mid-30s. As long as the serve is still there they have a chance at winning.
Serena at such a young age, was already a match for Hingus. They are both very clever players, with great technic, and the will to fight to win. Thats why Hingis is doing so good in doubles. There you have some support from a partner. But single is to much for Hingis. Also the stress, that comes with it. A real battle between Serena and Hingis at this time would do nobody any good. It is very easy to try to twist reality, and to see things your own way. They are both great players, and the score is what it is, and it is a hell of a job to keep it so, as long as you can, and with all weapons, sometimes also some intimidation, because its all in the game.
Serena is built like a strong woman. It's pathetic, the thinly veiled sexism some men have toward Serena Williams just because she's physically powerful. You people don't realize how such comments only reveal your own masculine insecurity. And Hingis wasn't more 'skilled' than Williams here. The Williams sisters have no lack of grace, precision, and technique with their play. Obviously their power is their trump card, but characterizing them as all brawn is categorically stupid of you.
CognizantCheddar It isn't sexism. Serena has a physical advantage over the majority of the players on the WTA tour. Also, anyone who watches tennis knows that Serena is a sloppy player, often losing her balance and hitting off of one foot, falling on her ass, not moving to the ball and hitting hunched over, etc. If not for her ability to hit multiple aces to dig herself out of trouble she wouldn't be nearly as successful as she has been. Hingis was definitely the more skilled player. The variety of shots and consistency, particularly hitting down the line, were far better than the Williams sisters. Unfortunately for her she was a small player who lacked power and was never able to really put much pace on her serve. That made it very difficult to overcome the power of the Williams sisters. If she beat one of them, she'd have to face the other the next match and she rarely beat both of them in the same tourney.

@gtorreblancaluna I had to watch a few times. It's puzzling to say the least. I don't know exactly what happened there. Probably didn't have any effect on the outcome. Choosing, selecting competent, unbiased line judges was a problem for a long time. Hopefully it's gone, or soon will be.
In the end, Martina's style was not able to withstand Serena and Venus' power tennis. Her substance abuse also got the better off her. Had she been more disciplined, she could have stayed longer in the game and made it very interesting.
+Jg Talented1 Hingis left the first time because of her injuries. I think she had problem with her ankles. I vaguely remember her blaming the shoemaker Sergio Tacchini for her injuries. I think she sued them but since I didn't care for Hingis, I never kept myself informed about the case.
+Dimitry Raskolnikov I may be late but she had a drug suspension failing a drug test. Then she only continued/focused on doubles with players, and is currently successful with indian tennis player sania mirza.
Funnily enough, Serena actually seems to be hitting the ball more cleanly here than she does today. It seems effortless and controlled power. I think this partly to do with no pressure on her shoulders here and being the underdog. I wish she'd strike the ball like this again.
the 2 matches that serena should have won against hingis were this one and the 2001 australian open quarterfinal match, which she was leading in the 3rd set in both match, and this one she had 2 match points.

That was great win .Serena dident like losing there very short handshake
This was a good match but do you you have their match in lipton in 1999
Serena always looked to be the more talented one of the sisters. Her game was more technically sound even though back in those days she was more erratic. Her serve was more consistent and unlikely to unravel like Venus' who served harder. Now that serve is regarded as arguably the greatest shot in tennis history.
True. And she had more fight.
LMAO back to you Cliffy - classic Hingis Sass I love it
Martina is the most beautiful number 1 I love her ❤
Una gran y talentosa Hingis su juego pura inteligencia .
The handshakes back then...sooooooo shady. LOL!!! Early on in her career, Serena let a lot of matches get away from her after being in winning positions. When she went on her Serena Slam tear, that's when she became the mental titan we know her to be today. This was a fun match to watch. Two legends.
like the 98 French 4th Rd vs Sanchez Vicario, leading a set & 5-2.
htownhomie06 the one that was most upsetting was when she lost in the U.S. Open third round to spirlea, after trouncing her in the second set 6-0. thankfully, spirlea fell off of the face of the earth shortly afterword
+Jg Talented1 Doesn't Maria Sharapova have 5 too? They consider her a legend.
+Jg Talented1 Martina is already in the hall of fame.
Justin Cartwright Serena sadly is known for that regularly her handshakes aren't as sincere. It's what has surrounded her reputation, I guess to keep competition at bay.
These were the days when Martina Hingis ruled women's tennis. She was never really the same again after that 1999 French Open final.
That was a tragic game for her tho
This is so awesome to see. Poor Hingis only got 5 slams but Serena has 18 in counting.
That Hingis got 5GS during this Graf era tells u much about Seles loss to the game during the time she was stabbed.
Serena's inexperience showed when holding Hingis on few match-points and when serving for the match - today's Serena would have put the match away without even trying too hard.
This footage simply shows that even tennis Greats had moments of inexperience in their rookie beginning - this is Serena's.
She's so beautiful...my favourite ever
She was my favourite player in that era.
What a match! I love how hingis was so aggressive with her backhand back then!!
So incredible!!
Such a cold handshake by Serena! Awesome win by Martina! :)
It takes two to have a handshake. I didn't notice Martina's part of the handshake being particularly warm.
@@patty49er I give credit to Martina for at least making eye contact. Can't say the same for Serena.
Hingis took an injury time-out at 5-4 in the final set, which is cut out.
Idol for gamesmanship!
Thanks g
Do any of these matches come in HD
No they're all 640x480. If they were available to be uploaded in HD they would be :)
Serena played so beautifully.
Hinges played more beautifully, Serena more powerfully & w more determination. But I prefer the beauty.
@@mckavitt13 Serena most beautiful game ever ...!!!!
uwa forever Nope.
She was still young but Hingis was also a very good player then and more experienced too.
@@brendakabanda2181 Don't blame about age. Hingis only a year older.
Serena can't achieved anything at 14 and 15 years.
I think this was before serena hit her prime.
No shit...lol!
Aladdin Smith .........what ?????
Richard is always cool.
Rather arrogant and very unpleasant
Magic against monsters power.I love Martina's tennis.
So great to watch .
Omg!!!!! This is EPIC!!!!!!!
being a big person is always an advantage in tennis
Do you happen to have the 1999 semifinal? I've always wanted to watch the eight straight games where Serena scored 24 winners to 7 unforced
Que fantástico partido. Gran triunfo de la hermosa Martina. Inolvidable.
What a come back by my most lovable queen Martina ! 🤔🤔🌹🌹🌹🌹💚
Hingis' demeanor is unsportsmanlike. She has this "take that" attitude when she hits a winner.
Maybe she knew that they were in two different places in their careers. Martina was on her way out; Serena was on her way up.
Has she to apologise for hitting a winner?
I like Serena but I love Martina. Her game is all-around. She is the only female player who covers the whole court with her groundstrokes and drop shots. Arguably, she is the best female player ever. I'm glad that she is back playing doubles again and winning. She is going to make history by having the most GS wins in doubles.
brih Mendiola no serena is better
such a tough game, but Martina Hingis will always be the Best !
Always be the best????
Not anymore
Martina Hingis hasn’t been the best since 1999. Please sit down and shut up!
😂🤣😂👉🏾🚪
good Martina Hingis
we love both hingis-williams :-)
The crowd is so obnoxious. Let the linespeople do their job, and stop interfering by calling "out" during play.
Hingis is really cute. She reminds me of Nathalie Portman a little bit.
Yes that's right, I agree with you, I just like Nathalie Portman because she looks like Hingis, in fact the Swiss Miss has a cute face of a show business star.
Beautiful game ❤️
Geez.. Serena really has cleaned up her technique
technique? you mean raw power, thats why she win (and because the competition retired)
@@stijn4687 If Serena won based on her power don't you think we'd see more muscular women in the wta to match her? That's not the case.
Her serve has gotten better but the foundation of the Mechanics is shown here.
Stijn Slim No. Serena plays completely different now than here. She has excellent technique, not just power.
@@stijn4687 😂😂😂how many slams have you won?
Hingis had great pacing, speed, anticipation... instinct.
DeGrate1896 .....I guess it’s whether you get a kick out of seeing brains or brawn at work !!
@@Geneva8181 Precisely. In my opinion, brawn has little place on the tennis court.
mckavitt13 .....then we are in agreement! I much prefer to see a tactical game.
No doubt she would say she has no time for losing fairly, the game, and her accomplishments deserve as much
Look at the handshake. At least Williams did not spend her time shouting on the court. Much quieter and much more enjoyable.
What's more enjoyable is that Serena has set the standard of Slams in the Open Era.
WTF? Serena grunted her way through the match. Hingis didn't make a sound.
🤔Brings back memories of days gone past.
Hinges is the Swiss Miss and she has heart and soul to compete with all her heart.
💖😎
Hingis does not get enough credit for how tough of a competitor she was.
Hingis had so consistent ground strokes.
nice handshake !!!
olaraay Serena is the bitch here
Serena, it was known then, confirmed today, she wasn't the most sport tennis player, thing was she was regularly like that, it wasn't a one off thing. Coping mechanism probably? Well gave her the reputation to conquer the tennis world later.
Are you kidding me " Back to you Cliffy " Classic Martina Hingis.
again another example of how brilliant tennis technique can beat brute force ... i miss Hingis, Cjlisters, Henin, Selles
Hingis didn't win because Serena only had brute force, she won cause she had more experience. That's all. Serena should have beaten Hingis but she didn't know how to win back then at 16 yrs young.
i totally agree!
Serena was a pro for 4 months at this point.
Do you have the 99 semis?
;) 1998 Semi's vs Venus ruclips.net/video/FRWAg15_mK8/видео.html better than nothing lol
Serena is way better at everything.
+Maggot Brain Hingis
If she beat one of them, she'd have to face the other the next match and she rarely beat both of them in the same tourney.
hingis my fvrt
What i like about serena is always humble what a beautiful handshake
Huh?
What makes you say that?
@@wel7652 why you guys always have problem whenever pple say something positive abt Serena?Stf up if you dont like her ..We love her ..ok?And she Will always be the world champion
Last time I looked it takes two people to make a handshake "beautiful"
Sarcasm is lost among the commentators here lol
Hingis is a Legend,
Wow , 20 years ago Serena already was very good!!!!!
Serena 30 years ago was prob very good lol
Hingis serve was no joke had perfect placements though not so much on pace the placement on the serve was excellent
Damn, 1998. I've forgotten how old Serena is.
4:47 linesman celebrating?
@gtorreblancaluna I had to watch a few times. It's puzzling to say the least. I don't know exactly what happened there.
Probably didn't have any effect on the outcome.
Choosing, selecting competent, unbiased line judges was a problem for a long time. Hopefully it's gone, or soon will be.
I have been playing tennis for thirty years. This is the best I've seen.
Wow. You haven’t seen much in 30 years! 😂
Icy handshake. No goat more like meow.
I miss Martina!! love her!!
In the end, Martina's style was not able to withstand Serena and Venus' power tennis. Her substance abuse also got the better off her. Had she been more disciplined, she could have stayed longer in the game and made it very interesting.
ryan philippe Bullshit.
Manners! It is people like you who make the web a hellhole!
ryan philippe Knowledge! It's idiots the ones who make Earth a hellhole.
***** Source?
That Hingis got 5GS during this Graff era tells u much about Monica Seles loss to the game during the time she was stabbed.
Omg Serena was just 16 years old here lol, How time flies
+AnonymousArtist976 She was more ugly here.
Says the fatass hiding behind a computer screen in his mother's basement, that's cute Fred :////
+AnonymousArtist976 yes, and hingis...20 years old.
+enplay101 Hingis 17 years old.
+Johnny J yes u right
♥️ Hingis
21:16 is that Federer?
hingis was so good back then, these angles, hitting behind serena alot
Nice shots by each player. What happened with Hingis? Why did she "peter-out" so early in her career?
+Dimitry Raskolnikov I may be late but she had a drug suspension failing a drug test. Then she only continued/focused on doubles with players, and is currently successful with indian tennis player sania mirza.
Cocaine
Ah, thanks
She is one of the most talented ever, other people take PED to play GS, she took PDD(performance deceasing drug) while playing GS... lol.
she is number 1
Miss Martina playing 😍
Hingis was a master.
Williams just lives and dies by power.
does it matter when you look at their results?
Serena! Future 8 time champ!
Hingis won fair and square.
Serena's "handshake." LOL
