Love the reaction guys. This song is truly relatable to most people. That's why Metallica went farther than the other bands in their genre. This song received alot of negative feedback from people who weren't able to see it's true meaning. It's not promoting suicide. It is just saying you're not alone if you're having these thoughts. We've had them too. This song has helped alot of people get over bouts of depression and thoughts of suicide. One of Metallica's best songs. I rate it a 10.

      Simply nothing more to give

To the remark at the end about how dark has life been compared to someone else, I've had dark times but not nearly as bad as others. Some people try to discredit other's darkness because it's difficult to understand perspectives outside your own. So I always to try to say, "You never know how deep someone's well is when you only know the depth of your own". I've enjoyed the metal journey you two have taken. Cheers! And I would love to suggest Opeth - Ghost of Perdition live at the Red Rock Amphitheatre. I think they will have elements that both of you could really dig.

I've listened to the song, probably, too many times since my wife's death. The music and lyrics capture the emotions I have felt and continue to feel. We were together from the ages 11 and 12 and she passed at age 55 in 2015 and I cannot tell you the blackness that envelopes you when the person who was most present in your life, who you literally grew up with and was always there suddenly is gone... well it took 20 months total but believe me the last 30 min were sudden and the moment I felt her missing from the universe was instant and violent. I feel every word of this song and death is certainly not my enemy but I personally don't believe anyone has the right to say "I am in such misery that I will take my life and pass my pain onto those who care about me". Anyway believe me there are many people out there who hear this song and feel connected to it.

I've been through the death of an 11 year old son, the loss of my wife to cancer and then to top it off, a flood that destroyed all of me and my children's physical ties to the past. I wouldn't say any of it is worse than the desperation of a parent going to bed wondering how they are going to provide for their child the next day or a child's desperation from being bullied at school and feeling there is no way out.
There isn't any reason to measure desperation.
I never have related to Fade To Black. For me it's a simple song that's a precursor of things to come from Metallica. It's dipping their toes into melody and an accessible song structure which they mastered later.
But the song has meant a lot to other people. No reason to compare that either. I like to listen to it knowing others love it.

Understand that music can tell a story and create a mood along with (or even without) lyrics. The choice to use acoustic guitars were to help create that mood of dark sadness and helplessness. It implies that the protagonist is frail and falling apart. And of course the heavier electric parts represent the anger: “why do I feel this way?” “Why can’t I get out of this?” “I need help and no one is listening”
The fact that the chorus has no lyrics is also very effective. It’s internal, the protagonist isn’t outwardly expressing with words how far gone he is. And of course the outro with the fade out during the solo says it all: he’s finally made the choice to end it all. He’s free.

I like you guys, you're cute together. I suspect Brad is an engineer of some kind. No idea what Lex does, but you were born to be a metal head.
Brad--your description of going high and going low and coming back to baseline, that is essentially Bipolar disorder. I have it.
A lot of Metallica songs are about addiction, loss of control, and a messed up childhood. That's because James had a messed up childhood, has struggled with alcoholism most of his adult life, and suffered from depression because of it.
Keep in mind this song came out in 1984.
I saw a commenter below mention something about the lack of a solo. The last few minutes of the song are a solo, ranked the 24th best guitar solo EVER by Guitar World.

    • @brad_wilson
      @brad_wilson 3 года назад +1

The engineer guess seems good. Brad's analytical to Lex's emotional: while listening, he seems to like to think deeply about the songs, and she likes to experience them deeply.

By far the most intelligent reactions I've seen in the handful of y'all's videos I've caught.
Actually, for me, the solo at the beginning is Kirk's best with Sanitarium's intro close behind. They aren't for noodleheads (those into fast tapping that sounds like "noodlenoodlenoodlenoodle"), but there is a raw emotion that makes them perfect for that one singular song. Sanitarium has an abrasiveness and unhinged feel, and this one just oozes sorrow.

My favorites are SRV, EVH, and Carlos Santana.... love plenty of others... actually consider some overall maybe better than Carlos and EVH in technique. But, their actual soul was shared with their guitars. Eddie came up with some crazy techniques... and Carlos, seems to almost melt into his guitar. Hendrix was good, but I don't consider him the best like some lists do. I think a lot of lists are built out of respect of the guitarist, more than his/her ability. Lita Ford was no joke on the guitar, but doesn't really get a lot of credit. I think Slash is extremely underrated as well... Clapton is definitely way up the list as well...
The more I think of it... can there really be a list? Hard to compare genres of music, with a players actual ability.Because some of the music is so different. I tried playing guitar a few times... I just have massive respect for the talent needed to play it like some of these guys.
Metal... without a doubt in my mind, and this isn't like a bandwagon jumper... Dimebag was literally fucking insane. That dude was pretty wasted when I saw Pantera in concert, and holy fuck man... He was simply amazing.

      Lemme rephrase: Hell Yes.
She may not be ready for his depth of shred though. Texas blues is next level compared to most mainstream metal sounds, and SRV shares the throne with Hendrix. She may not be ready. Perhaps some Dragonforce to prep her.

I agree that SRV is one badass blues man but.. I would also say B.B King.. Just listen to "All Over Again", "3 O'clock Blues" or "Blues Boy's Tune".. He can make you feel with 3 notes. Now, I know SRV has a few soulful tunes but he's mostly an animal of the shred variety lol.
Also, let's not forget Rory Gallagher, Jimi Hendrix said in an interview that Rory is (he was still alive then) the best guitarist in the world. I'd love to see them react to some sweet blues though and then maybe get them into the old stuff like Son House, Skip James Blind Willie Johnson and Robert Johnson ;)

Tragic fact: James Hetfield (vocals & guitar) of Metallica was playing 'Fade to black' in a 1992 concert in Montreal when a stage pyro nearly killed him when it went off under him... he suffered major burns and had to be rushed to a hospital (Metallica's set was cancelled that night)
Guns N' Roses went on after them, and they stopped playing after a short set... the stadium audience rioted and trashed the venue. Hetfield was treated & released - he couldn't play guitar for awhile, so they had a guest guitarist while he sang at the next show.

    Ride The Lightning, 1984.
I'm not one of those teenagers who struggled with melancholy or depression, so I can't relate the same way a lot of other kids from my generation have, but I struggled with loneliness and rejection, so this song spoke pretty heavily to a lot of the pain I felt. I didn't discover this song until after I discovered Metallica in 1988. ("One" was the their first song that I heard... blew my mind). It's Metallica Playlist, but never staylist. I see the world quite differently as a Believer at 46 than I did as a lost 13 year old kid, with no real understanding of what my hope should be rooted in.
Metallica was a huge influence on me for MANY years. I love them as if they were family, and I've never met any of them... they were a constant companion when companions were scarce. It warms my heart that you enjoy at least some of their music that you have discovered.

I've been fortunate enough so far to not have lost anyone close to me, so it's hard for me to personally relate to the song, but I absolutely love it regardless. If I can feel the emotion in a song, even if I can't relate, or if it helps me understand someone else's experience better, I love it and will listen to it.

This song helped me in a different way. The night my Mom died was really traumatic, we knew she was dying and she was supposed to be asleep from meds when it happened. But she had struggled with such a bad opiate addiction and her tolerance so high that no amount of me explaining this to the docs really got the message through to them. So she was awake, and more meds couldnt be ordered quick enough so she suffered horribly. I watched her suffocate and struggle for each breath and fight what was happening to her. It was so traumatic I still suffer some PTSD issues from it. But, alone and driving home afterwards I caught the very end of this song, being a Metallica fan, and in such a messed up head space, I hated that I missed it. Aggravated I just changed the station, and there it was again, from the beginning. I never cried so hard in my life. It was like a last message from my Mama telling me it was ok, she was ok, and she was free.
