Thank you for sharing! I wasn't used to sitting in meditation for so long, and I wasn't used to going without supper. The first time it was very difficult to sit, because at that time I didn't know I was sensitive to gluten and I had a lot of arthritis and a lot of pain in my body. To be honest, if I had thought I needed to prepare for that, it would have been stressful. For those going there for the first time I would say don't worry. Fear nothing. The body adapts. Don't over-prepare, it's not worth putting yourself under that extra stress. You will be surprised to find that, because of the rather long hours of meditation there, the body will act differently, it will not want much sleep or much food. Vipassana retreat will most likely serve as a beautiful reset for the body.
Excellent advice and wonderful description of the experience. Anyone considering a 10 day Dr Grazilia has articulated the universal experience perfectly!
Glad you found the video helpful. Yes it is by late Goenka ji. Meditations are guided in his voice only. You can check their website for details on Kerala www.dhamma.org/en/schedules/schketana
Yes, it was my first time. On the day of our arrival, we were served poha in dinner. The next morning (day 1 ) our course begins and we are served tea with milk and kurmura + 1 fruit as evening snacks. This is at 5pm. This is the last meal for the day. Same menu all 10 days. Old students are given only tea without milk OR fruit. Don't worry about food. Just eat mindfully, as per your hunger at that time, and sleep soon. Breakfast is very early :)
No sleeveless, no shorts. I chose loose, comfortable kurtas and salwar. Or trackpants and tshirts. I also carried a stole with me to cover my head ( it was a cold winter when I went there)
No extra preparation needed. If you have too much pain during periods or if they last too long, then I suggest reconsider if you want to go this time. If it's bearable or the discomfort is only for a day, manage with pain medication. You can ask the teacher to let you meditate in the room, for that one day, during group meditation time. That way you get a little rest. But all other times, you will have to follow the schedule as everyone else. All the best :)
Hi, i have registered for meditation at Markal center. Can you please tell how early or by what time we need to reach the center if we have to request for separate room?
Try to reach closest to the time the registration process starts..so if it says 1pm onwards...try to be there around that time. There is usually no special preference given to anyone...but..if no single rooms are available, then the organisers cannot help. They try to accommodate requests, but rooms should be available.
Mostly it's shared rooms. Depends on availability. You can request single room and try to reach venue early. I had reached early and during room allotment made a request and they agreed, so I got a single room. That was at Markal center.

Hi Mam, I going to vipassana this month for the first time. And m expecting periods between this. How do I prepare for this? Please guide me.
