An Indian interviewer with no expertise of something which is taught in her neighborhood learns a lesson from an Israeli writer with an experience of her neighborhood. Actually the point is if one wants to learn something distance or boundaries whether material or immaterial doesn't matters. As he says in his book 'Sapiens' the concept of nation is an imagination so as to make people Cooperative and therefore it's TRUE to the some extent. There is a long roads beyond vipasna as well. Let me also throw some light on lifes purpose as the interviewer asked him about the same, the purpose of life for each individual depends upon his own external or internal and material or spiritual life learnings and experiences. Therefore every individuals purpose of life is totally unique but still one thing is common that lifes purpose has to have something which brings peace of mind and satisfaction or contentment along with such a level of acceptance of life that makes ones life something which can't be explained but can only be experienced by an individual him/her self. 🙏

Yes. Yes. Yes. Like you, I sure wish that Harari would devote an entire book to this topic. And I won't be surprised if he eventually does. Meanwhile, in his latest book, "21 Lessons for the 21st Century", he superbly spells put what we should all be concerned and focused about in this century. The last chapter is about meditation. It is very good. Another book which I think addresses this topic (understanding the mind in the light of emerging science) very well is "Why Buddhism is True" by Robert Wright. Highly recommended. This knowledge and approach to world peace and problem solving is spreading surely and slowly. I've written a fairly long article where I have expressed hope that with the return & spread of the Vipassana meditation technique around the globe, we are entering a 2,500 year era of suffering reduction and suffering elimination on a scale never seen before. @@RashidKapadia It has been a few years, but thank you kindly. A book you might be interested in is "Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking", where the authors describe the incredible finds in neuroscience and technological tools we are developing to rapidly accelerate the spiritual path. mindandculture.org/projects/engaging-virtual-environments/spirit-tech/ I know this from experience. I struggled terribly with meditation for many years and made no progress. I had addiction and kundalini syndrome issues and it all overpowered my ability to meditate. A few years ago, I used a powerful molecule called NAD+ (which also has age-reversal and slowing properties, and is fantastic for sore backs and joints) to partly repair my abused brain, and eight months ago I discovered neurofeedback, which is settling my constant fight-or-flight nervous system down after 25 years. Also, the resurgence of psychedelic research after it was killed off for 50 years is a very good sign. The reality is, meditation alone will *never* succeed in reaching the masses at the scale and with the power required to change civilization in time to avoid disaster.
Harari's dedication in his book Homo Deus *To my teacher, S. N. Goenka (1924-2013), who lovingly taught me important things* is what triggered my Vipassana Voyage.
"The deep purpose of a place like a temple is to bring peace and harmony to the world. Now if a temple brings violence and disharmony to the world, it's a broken temple. What do you need it for?" Genius. As a compatriot of Mr. Harari I wish everyone in my country and in neighbouring Palestine listened to these words of wisdom, imagine how many lives would be saved.
you presume the deep purpose of a temple is to bring peace and harmony to the world. I've never heard that before so it cannot be the universal definition. Best he had started by saying "IF" when he set up his STRAW MAN ARGUMENT but he's too arrogant for that. No one will even know this man's name in 50 years. He's so shallow and trendy. He and Steven Pinker should have babies: They would be the most ordinary offspring in the world. Hahahahahaha.
I think Harari got many things wrong this time.Probably he will realize it if he meditates further. It is obvious to many that when we say the country is suffering it means the people in that region.
Having 'struggled' for years and ' failing ' billions of times...I came across this discussion . Amazing. Authentic. Beautiful. Insightful. Liberating. What a lot of selfmade stories we cling to, and keep suffering.!
Amazing!!! Exactly is correct. This man speaks the truth. Bravo!! Great video!! Meditation is not going somewhere else and imagining pleasant things and going to another planets. Observing the reality is real meditation. No changing of what is. As it us. No trying to change reality. Leave the things on their own way and be the observer. Thanks to the Buddha, we can learn. Vipassana. This technique comes from the Buddha. As he was searching many years the “truth” with different teachers, he mastered the concentration meditation, but then he realized that this is not the final point. And he did practice alone and he became the Enlightened one, the Buddha. Thanks to him, we know Vipassana nowadays and we can get rid of our disorders. We can use the technique to uproot our disorders. Not only calm our mind through concentration, but also change our thinking and reactions . Uproot those defilements in us. Through Vipassana. It is a technique that i experienced and that changed my life totally. It is the technique that made me turn to be a Buddhist. Thank you. Namo Buddhaya!🙏🙏🙏🌺
Namo buddha🙏 Bt i m trying since 2 months bt still can't concentrate on my own breaths...what i have to do now??..do i need some changes in my practicing method??
When you are in perspective, everything changes. This is really insighful. It's not about a record of observation or the best 'reality check', but the immediate awareness raised from that perception. "... if I can't observe the reality of my own breath for 10 seconds, how can I hope to observe the reality of the global political system or the global economy system...?"
[ @4:58 ] "...The deep source of so much of our personal and collective problems is in the FANTASIES that we create. And then we mistake them for reality and THEN we try to IMPOSE them on reality and we get extremely upset when it doesn't work, when reality doesn't conform to our favorite fantasy..." So true...
Hope Indians can learn and Yuval can mention it more that vipassana type practice has nothing to do with spirituality or some force. Before one wants to learn or understand anything complex, the ability to meditate is the first enabler. Without the ability to be content with boredom , stress snd misery will dominate the mind.
She treated it like a political interview with cross questions and a bit of condescending tone. But as always amazed by Mr Harari’s ability to keep it relevant anyway.
This interview showcases the importance of the interviewer! As an interviewer, I believe you have to read the books of the interviewee multiple times to familiarize yourself with his thoughts. I feel like the interviewer has not even bothered reading Noah's books. She seems to be unfamiliar with his way of thinking, and there have been a few misunderstandings in such a short interview.
People are criticizing the interviewer. I think she did a very honest interview, and Harari answered the questions very well too. Don't judge her because she had genuine questions.
This is a poor interviewer. Anyone interested in knowing Yuval's elaboration on this topic, (a) should listen to him on this podcast. (b) Really practice this for and by themselves.
Don't blame anyone! Listen, it opens up some very nice concepts, a very good and fair point of view. Don't judge, it spoils the opening of everyone's bias and gives rise to a very good speech.
Very useful thing is your description below the video. For a person like me who like to explore about the topics they were mentioning in talks. You made it more easier for me reach the right sources to know more. Thank you Rashid 😊
I only hope he comes out with books detailing his spiritual beliefs. His first two books were amazing, but they left me cold. I was going through the loss of my faith in Western theism, and while I was resonating deeply with his book in the transient nature of human culture and thought, he left it there. It felt like it was a cold, secular look at how everything we hold to be true is just a mirage. But I love what he said about the temple. Jesus was also about the people when he said that the man was not made for the Sabbath, the Sabbath was made for man. And yet we have Christians today all over the world fighting and arguing over this very same principle. They cannot see it.
Thanks for your comment. Harari does go deeper into the advantages and benefits of meditation in his third book. "21 Lessons for the 21st Century" Last Chapter. Another excellent book. Worth reading.
success in vipasana is not dependent on how many sensations you are getting within your body , it is dependent on the Equanimity you maintain. Being Equanimous is everything.
Approach is reminiscent of Phenomenology, a method of experiential inquiry by Edmund Husserl and adopted and adapted most notably by Sartre and Heidegger.
Most of the time everybody is just talking about making meaningfull changes to their life. I'm so greatful to discover that Vipassana is how to actually do it. So I wasnt surprised that its not easy... however once I started to understand how effective it really is through giving a fair trial to the technique, the decision to continue is the easiest decision Ive ever made.

Are we here to insult the interviewer? Makes us a better person, doesn't it? Sounds like we all are very qualified, especially know better than this lady. But still we are here, relying on her questions which are bringing out the responses which we are applauding. Please stop disrespecting others!
After having been introduced to Vipassana meditation early this year, I decided to learn more by reading widely. Here is a segment of what I read QUOTE Dhamma offers a universal definition of sin and piety. Any action that harms others, that disturbs their peace and harmony, is a sinful, unwholesome action. Any action that helps others, that contributes to their peace and harmony, is a pious, wholesome action. UNQUOTE A pragmatic application of this thinking is, "It is unwholesome to post comments about interviewer, or interviewee, or other comment posters, if such comments end up, perhaps inadvertently, contaminating our peace and harmony." It's a pretty nice/neat way to approach commenting. Good & practical guidelines for commenting. Thanks for your wholesome thinking Rabiul Islam.
@@villikuha7387, pragmatically I would suggest that we focus on trying to make all our actions, including vocal action, contribute to peace and harmony. We may not always succeed, but having this as our volition / intention is a good starting point.
Its neither about disrespect nor about being a better person . If that lady know more than all of us still in that case people have all the rights to question and give their opinion . The same people applauds and criticize(both are part of life .) One should be fully prepared to conduct talks on such profound topic which is going to the masses .

- Mandukya Upnishad
-Kena Upnishad
- Aproksha Anubhuti by Shankaracharya
-Vivekchudami by Shankaracharya
-Ashtavakra Gita
-Yoga sutras by Patanjali
-Gita as it is: commentary by Prabhupada
-Shrimad Bhagavad:commentary by Prabhupada
-Gospel of ShriRamakrishna
- Imitation of Christ by Thomas Kempis
- I am that by Nisargadatta
- Who am I by Ramana Maharshi
Just to name a few. You might read some of these or similar works. Why don't we glorify and advertise these books. Does sapiens provide any solace to our soul or answers the ultimate queries of man.
I have read sapiens, it's a good book. Explains well this transitory world and body. Engages one in vain queries and dilemmas, answers to which are of no purpose.
Let me know what you think.

For my first four days there, I felt proud if I could reach 5 seconds... sheesh

Well said. I agree. Sadhu.

Thank you *Yuval Noah Harari* for giving very clear vision about *Vipassana*
Sabaka mangal ho🙏
Brilliant! I was wondering how Yuval became so insightful. Now I understand.
Check out this video too. Also read "notes" in description. It's insightful--in his own words.
Good Luck to you. METTA.

@@RashidKapadia Thanks. This explains a lot. I had to laugh, "Yeah, because I'm very careful what I say", heh, heh. Gotta luv the guy.
I wish Harari would devote a whole book to these topics. Understanding the mind is probably the only thing that could potentially avert the grim fate that may await our civilization and our species in the 21st Century.
Yes. Yes.
The article is titled: "50 Years Ago, in 1969, Vipassana-an Ancient Meditation Technique, Returned to India, the Land of its Origin." If you would like to read it, here's a link: necessarybridges.com/2019/05/50-years-ago-in-1969-vipassana-an-ancient-meditation-technique-returned-to-india-the-land-of-its-origin/
And here is the idea expressed in a 1-minute (unlisted) video. ruclips.net/video/dcl-Y6zV8bY/видео.html
With Best Wishes & METTA for ALL.
@@RashidKapadia It has been a few years, but thank you kindly. A book you might be interested in is "Spirit Tech: The Brave New World of Consciousness Hacking", where the authors describe the incredible finds in neuroscience and technological tools we are developing to rapidly accelerate the spiritual path.
mindandculture.org/projects/engaging-virtual-environments/spirit-tech/
I know this from experience.
Bharat is land of knowledge, land of seeker, land of spirituality
I never knew that one of my favourite authors practices Vipassana! I practiced 10 days in Goa.
Harari's dedication in his book Homo Deus *To my teacher, S. N. Goenka (1924-2013), who lovingly taught me important things* is what triggered my Vipassana Voyage.
I am thankful to Vipasana it transformed my emotions.... Peace and harmony in my feelings...
Just wow! This was really amazing especially when he talked about pain test on entities! Temples and religion!
"The deep purpose of a place like a temple is to bring peace and harmony to the world. Now if a temple brings violence and disharmony to the world, it's a broken temple. What do you need it for?"
Genius.
@@garypuckettmuseDon't exhaust yourself trying to understand what you clearly can't.
This is the last video I am ever gonna watch to encourage myself to start practising meditation.
🙏🏾
Sabka Mangal ho
🙏
Namo buddha🙏
Bt i m trying since 2 months bt still can't concentrate on my own breaths...what i have to do now??..do i need some changes in my practicing method??
When you are in perspective, everything changes. This is really insighful. It's not about a record of observation or the best 'reality check', but the immediate awareness raised from that perception.
"... if I can't observe the reality of my own breath for 10 seconds,
how can I hope to observe the reality of the global political system
or the global economy system...?"
Salute to your humbleness and clear point of view sir ! 😎👍🙏💯
Vipassana is the most useful technic for Liberation.
5:22 "when reality doesn't confirm to our favourite fantasy"
wow. mind blown
This is absolutely Brilliant
Yuval is so very inspiring. Thank you for your wisdom.
She treated it like a political interview with cross questions and a bit of condescending tone. But as always amazed by Mr Harari’s ability to keep it relevant anyway.
Very good observation.
Condescending she is.
If you live in the present moment - you are sure to be purposeful and happy person. Through meditation one can attain peace, health and wealth.

And, of course, the stoics would say, "Memento mori", and "Amor fati".
Exactly she is very annoying
Vipasana is a biggest contribution of Buddhist to the world of human beings.
People are criticizing the interviewer. I think she did a very honest interview, and Harari answered the questions very well too. Don't judge her because she had genuine questions.

Excellent way to explain Vipassana meditation!
This is a poor interviewer. Anyone interested in knowing Yuval's elaboration on this topic, (a) should listen to him on this podcast. (b) Really practice this for and by themselves.

@@RashidKapadia 😄 Got the meaning. A new word to me.

@@RashidKapadia That explains it then. I got half way through it, but I never finished it. Lol. I will get back to it soon. Cheers.

Great...☸️
success in vipasana is not dependent on how many sensations you are getting within your body , it is dependent on the Equanimity you maintain.
Please please please collaborate with Alain de Botton! You both are such amazing minds! Ps. This guy is doing and saying it right! Love his books!
I agree with hoy...two of the most brilliant minds of these minds
Let's accept d reality as it's that's d AWARENESS N EQUANIMITY power of Vippassana what I learnt since 27yrs with lots metta to d interviewer, d interviewed n all as well💐🙏
Are we here to insult the interviewer? Makes us a better person, doesn't it? Sounds like we all are very qualified, especially know better than this lady. But still we are here, relying on her questions which are bringing out the responses which we are applauding. Please stop disrespecting others!
After having been introduced to Vipassana meditation early this year, I decided to learn more by reading widely. Here is a segment of what I read
QUOTE
Dhamma offers a universal definition of sin and piety.
Any action that harms others, that disturbs their peace and harmony, is a sinful, unwholesome action.
Any action that helps others, that contributes to their peace and harmony, is a pious, wholesome action.
UNQUOTE
A pragmatic application of this thinking is, "It is unwholesome to post comments about interviewer, or interviewee, or other comment posters, if such comments end up, perhaps inadvertently, contaminating our peace and harmony."
It's a pretty nice/neat way to approach commenting. Good & practical guidelines for commenting.
Thanks for your wholesome thinking Rabiul Islam.
Rabiul & Rashid 👌🏼
@@RashidKapadia A single action can both disturb and contribute to peace and harmony. What is your practical advice then?
@@villikuha7387, pragmatically I would suggest that we focus on trying to make all our actions, including vocal action, contribute to peace and harmony. We may not always succeed, but having this as our volition / intention is a good starting point.
Its neither about disrespect nor about being a better person . If that lady know more than all of us still in that case people have all the rights to question and give their opinion . The same people applauds and criticize(both are part of life .) One should be fully prepared to conduct talks on such profound topic which is going to the masses .
I have attended 10 days vipassana at sarnath. Also practice regular basis. He telling right. Very less people will understand vipassana. I even failed to convince my family.
It's Simple and so deep! It's amazing really!

Start again. Start again. Start again.
With a calm mind. With a quiet mind. With a tranquil mind.
With an alert mind. With an attentive mind. With a vigilant mind.
With a balanced mind. With a equanimous mind. With a detached mind.
Work patiently. Work persistently. Work ardently.

Work smilingly and with strong-determination.
