As a cowboy action shooter a leveler rifle is total capable for home defense. I agree that you should stay with a pistol caliber rifle 357mag . 44mag or 45 colt

When I was 13 three grown men kicked in my front door while I was home alone one day. Luckily they were just looking to steal some shit and not hurt anyone. I quickly ran to my parents closet and loaded my Winchester 94 30-30. I'm very thankful I didn't have to use it that day and I now have much better tools to deal with that kind of situation but I wouldn't necessarily feel undergunned with a lever action.

I have loaded many a 357 mag cartridge to 38 spl +P velocities. The 357 length rounds run flawlessly in my Marlin 1894CB 357. It is my HD long gun. My wife handles it well also. My first option is the Mossberg 590A1 12ga with 00 buck.

Another advantage to a lever action rifle is that some states ban threaded barrels on semi autos, but not lever action, bolt action or single shot rifles so you could always have the barrel threaded for a suppressor and if you are shooting standard pressure 158 grain 38 special ammo in the gun it will be almost totally silent similar to a subsonic 300 blk bolt action rifle.

i think the .44 magnum is the better alternative. 240 gr jhp. at 1800fps is put out some serious numbers and effect on target. plus most .44 mag lever guns are 10+1 rifles so you are getting 2 more rounds over the .357 magnum.

I say leave it alone. It worked great stock since the old west.
HD why add a light - did something happen where people don’t have electricity anymore- turn your lights on.
You don’t need a red dot for HD lol
The only thing people need is training. All the accessories are not necessary . People seemed to shoot well before all this Gucci gear was invented, people in 3rd world countries seem to shoot well without all that stuff. People just need to learn to shoot and have a HD plan. Something as simple as they go to one room in the house someone has the gun in the room while someone else calls 911. You don’t need to be room clearing, you don’t need to be kicking doors in tracking the intruder. Just train with your firearm get range time in

  • @JimmyMakingitwork
    @JimmyMakingitwork 4 года назад +2

Red dot means more maintenance. Only add one if you’re good at keeping up with batteries and practice. Also be careful about making your lever gun look like an “assault rifle.” Takes away jury sympathy.
45-70 is great if three intruders are standing front to back.

Fibre optic sights (such as TruGlo for one example), ammo sleeve on the stock, and sling (the ones with a small knife and a few rounds on board are quite slick). All one needs to kit out a lever. Anything else is expensive bling. Red dots are, to be blunt, a dumb idea on any firearm that is planned as a SHTF or home defense as they require power, add height to the rifle and will not take any real abuse. Fibre optic sights work in anything shy of pure blackness. Sooner or later you'll have to knock off that red dot toy and use the real sights, so invest the money on those instead. If you are concerned about night issues, then yes mounting a flashlight is reasonable.
This infatuation tacticool guys have with blinging out lever guns just leaves me shaking my head. Its akin to those spinner hubcaps that were all the rage a few years ago, and those chrome dragging nuts I see on sooooo many rigpig trucks.
Far as caliber goes, that has far more to do with what you are expecting to defend yourself from - if its two legged predators, prettymuch anything will do the job, if however its four legged predators, especially the big bastards, you will need something with punch. And really, despite the size, 45/70 is less punishing in general than even 308 or 30.06 bolt actions, but sends more than enough mass at sufficient speed to stop anything short of an Abrams tank.

Sorry WRONG GUN... I'd get a Marlin with it's solid top, easily mount a Red-Dot without staying with the OLD top eject LG's. ALSO I'd go with the 44 Mag/special combined with a 44 revolver... for field work the 44 really beats the 357 for hunting and long range power; specials make it a viable self-defense caliber while the standard 20" Marlin holds "10" Mag rounds or "11" specials. These weigh perhaps a pound more than those 357's. 44 makes these real dual purpose hunting/defense guns. Marlins also have a cross bolt safety; my Dad ND a Winchester unloading it in the house, even though I warned him to point it out the back at the forest. The Marlin's safety is easy and intuitive to disengage, no bother vs your life, most other LG's don't have a safety at all.
AGAIN: FORGET OLD TOP EJECT LG's, get a Marlin or other side eject.
FORGET MOST HENERY's, only a few newer versions of these over-priced brass framed guns have the tactically necessary side loading gate!
    Again: SORRY: WRONG GUN. LOL

If you can't afford to change your state, _change_ your state. You might want something better than a lever-action for that. Not allowed to have one? Thus, why you need to have one anyway.

We have 3 1895's in 45-70, two GBL's and one SBL. They're GREAT for brush/hunting (deer/hot) rifles, but in a SHTF situation I'll go for my 30 rd AR, 12ga 500 Mossberg Tac, or our 12ga Mossberg 590 Shockwaves. Anyone using a lever guns for self/home defense in a SHTF scenario, you probably won't live long enough to regret your choice. /smh

Hmm I don’t live in an expensive home. But I do live out in the country. A lever action in .357 mag or .41 magnum would work great. There may be better options. But you can’t say they are not made for home defense. I have mine set up with a light and optics. Do I have other weapons, yes.

John Sanders handguns are inherently harder to use especially under stress. Unless your trained in clearing a house. It’s not the wisest thing to do. Hmm I’ve made no ignorant comments. The only one that’s shown any ignorance is you. And a steady stream of it.

I’d be good with two bond arms more than enough for self defense. Again it’s ridiculous what people think is needed for this job show me one home invasion where it’s recorded and more than 3 shots were fired and the thugs fought back I’ll wait.

    • @umami0247

Well nice place sure I would never live in a town that sucks Detroit Chicago New York just to name a few but the round count is the same. A thug or a POS whatever you want to call them aren’t in the crime business to fight someone they look for soft targets and sometimes they choose wrongly and get stung. But they are not going to fight it out in a gun battle period. These up standing individuals are going to flee like the wind to avoid getting a cap in their ass. Seen this happen over and over again. So having a firearm that holds a lot of ammo really is overrated. Again show me a gunfight where a home invasion is taking place where more than 3 shots have occurred and the criminals fight back Plenty of videos out there so show me one. And no where have I said anyone has to abide by what I’ve said this is all personal choices if you think or feel you need a magazine that holds x amount feel free that is certainly your right if you live in free states I’m just saying you don’t need to cause you will never need more than really the first shot to chase away the vermin that invaded your home again they are cowards not fighters.

As for the thumbnail....Im sorry bro, but I see no reason whatsoever to conduct those mods to a lever gun....having said that...in my opinion, it looks straight up dookie. Throw a red dot on a lever gun and call it a day if it is to be used as a "defense" rifle...My suggestion...to those that only have this type of rifle and wish to use it for a fighting rifle....get ready....SELL IT...and buy a fighting rifle! Fighting rifles will certainly take wild game as well..

Lever action rifle for home defense? Your joking, right? There is nothing better for home defense than a hand gun. If you want firepower, go with a 10mm or .45 "full size pistol", not a pocket pistol. If you want extreme firepower, get a pump action shotgun, cut the barrel down to legal minimum, cut the but stock down to legal minimum, and load it with 00 or 000 buckshot. Either way, you will have the advantage over anyone breaking into your home.

Just get a cheap pistol, shotgun or AR. Fml. Last thing you want to do is be cycling another round into your gun's chamber by hand, where there's a small chance of a fuck up, jam or something getting in the way of cycling the gun. Be realistic.
