      They shouldn't advertise the game as if the AI works on ovals. They should say the stock car oval AI is 100% unsupported, because it is right now. Interestingly, RaceRoom has the honesty to say this with their oval content. Arguably rF2's marketing should even say the road course AI is in open beta or alpha or something, cause it could be worse but is NOT good enough for a 'finished product'.

    • @Aro3o6
      @Aro3o6 2 года назад +6

      I have a feeling that the devs dont really know what their doing at this point. Well tbh, I already had a feeling back then in 2016-17 when they first started pumping out their roadmaps.
      The new ui just feels like a website. Unresponsive. The spectator hud makes your game lag to death. Its update rate on the inputs are terrible. And most importantly the new UI chugs my cpu like hell. No other sim/game is chugging my cpu just from the UI alone.
      As for the AI, tons of problems. Lifting behind a car, the throttle downgrade I talked about in my videos. AI massively understeering for some cars and some even in official content. Safety cars, and so much more. Even F1 challenge 99-02 didnt have this lifting behind a car in a slipstream. Same goes for GTR 2. rFactor 1 had it. Automobilista 1 had it, but reiza fixed it after a few years and it actually worked well. Why couldnt s397 ask reiza how they fixed the lifting behavior? Well I can assume that reiza actually knows more about the isimotor engine more than s397 themselves, and also partly due to s397 not giving a single shit about this issue.
      Now content wise. Looking back at all the roadmaps. They didnt do much really. ISI were the ones that carried the game imo. While it sucked during 2012-2016 content wise, at least they actually did stuff not only limited to content. S397 is here just to make content like a modding group and the new UI as I said, feels like a website that covers the old UI and redirects your clicks to the old UI in the background, if you get what I mean. And some of you might not know but some of the devs in s397 are actually from unitedracingdesign. Ales Ogrinc for example. What does this mean? Does s397 have zero knowledge on making content and are just hiring modders? I dunno.
      Now for the roadmaps, most of them were just about trailers and teasers of whats coming Soon(TM). What annoyed me the most is every roadmap had a "Looking Back" section which to me sounds like the s397 devs praising themselves for past updates.
      i'll be back to continue writing on this. stay tuned. and forgive me for my rant....

      @mjqt9921 2 года назад +2

      @@Aro3o6 While I look forward to reading your whole complete reply, what I've read so far says this: Studio 397 are basically modders who make content, not game devs who can skillfully improve the engine and fix bugs in the code. And I've heard others say the same.

  • @mjqt9921
    @mjqt9921 2 года назад +38

    The game engine's AI has its (verrry significant) issues others have noted. BUT what really frustrates me is that three of these glaring issues look like they could be easily fixable. The cars don't spaz bounce if they don't touch the apron, so 397 should just define the AI corridors to keep the cars well away from it! Easy fix. See the braking for no reason at 4:10 and 5:44, as well as the smoke at 3:20, which suggests braking? I suspect there's an AI fast line that doesn't perfectly line up at the start/finish, thus meaning AI cars have to brake to slow down and change direction (a rookie mistake I've made as a learning ISImotor modder). On the road course, the AI cars apparently hit the wall leaving the pits - which is just a misconfigured pit exit line no one bothered to test.
    If I'm right with my assessments... for what are you paying 397 with this track? To be a subpar modder who can't be bothered to give enough of a damn to test their AIW files? Cause IMO any modder worth their salt wouldn't release a track at version 1.0 with AI in this state.
    IMO best case scenario, 397 concentrated for this update on the Indy oval (which seems to have had some changes so that the AI experience is not as bad as Austin feared, by the way), neglected the Daytona oval, will realize their errors, and will issue hotfixes. But... judging by the past, I'd be *shocked* if that happens.

    • @dergeneralfluff
      @dergeneralfluff 2 года назад +5

      Their cars have had and still have some really bad errors that can easily be seen. The Mercedes GT3 has rpm lights that not only do not work at all like the real car, but also what is configured to be unusable, with the yellow turning on at like 5000rpm, with the next light being red, at about 7450 with a 7500 red line. The FFB on the car is also among many cars completely off feeling, something is not right with the suspension.
      The LMP2s take the cake however. The Oreca shows the red light on 8100rpm, with the red line of 9000. The Ligier (released years later) has the red light closer to 8700rpm. Both cars have the same engine, which is questionable if the real one even reaches 9000rpm. Oh, but also the power curve is wrong, the car has the same power as the real deal, but not as much torque, with the peak being at 8600rpm, indicating it is misplaced. Oh and if you try to run then to the redline the engine will probably not make the end of the race, at least with 12h or more events, so if you drive the Ligier based on the steering wheel the car will blow up.
      Oh and we are not done, the low downforce kit is broken on the LMP2. In the past it was beyond OP, but I believe if not every league would force you to run high downforce outside of LeMans it would still be quicker. It for no reason chopped a massive amount of body drag off the car, while the front end produced about as much aero as running a single dive plane (even though it should be like the no dive plane config). I have not looked at the values in years, but I think to stop the car doing 350 at LeMans they reduced by how much they cut the body drag, I think the issue of the dive planes is still there.
      The Oreca has also severe issues with it's brakes, at maximum front bias you still lock the rear disks first, especially when downshifting this can happen. Then use the Ligier I hear people say. Well, only thing realistic, the Ligier is completely uncompetitive against the Oreca.
      Interesting tid bid: rf2 does allow changing of the model based on upgrades (used for indycars for road course and oval configs). Well, all endurance cars (at least the original ones, have not checked the newer cars) featured on their LeMans aero kit the removal of dive planes on the front. Not the Oreca, it always has both dive planes installed on the model.
      Then you have the entire thing with their questionable tire model, and I am sure there is way more to find.

      397 even broke the AI behaviour so that it only inputs 100% throttle or brake at any time. Which leads to some pretty weird behaviour. I heard they introduced the regression trying to fix the issue where low AI% strength AI weren't going full throttle (a longstanding ISImotor issue) but they never just reverted their changes (which would have kept AI that drove decently). And I think they don't understand their own codebase well enough to have done that at the time (but that's pure conjecture on my part).

    Bad AI and rFactor franchise go together since the dawn of time probably. Even back in the day rFactor 1 was well known for having pretty much awful AI, which made offline racing really redundant. Which was sad for me, as rFactor 1 served as a natural successor to F1 Challenge 99-02, which in my opinion had much better AI, despite having occasional hiccups as well - but it was still miles ahead of what rF1 gave later. Once rFactor 2 came around, I was really hoping that maybe offline racing would improve. Unfortunately after almost 9 years since the release, rFactor 2 hasn't delivered any improvements in the AI department, and recent months/years feel like it's actually going worse with the time. S397 probably doesn't even care for single player mode that much, since rFactor 2 has become (or trying to become) another eSports darling, with things like Le Mans Virtual Series, competitve rankings being introduced and all that weird online racing culture of present days. I feel old-fashioned, but I really miss simracing titles which put at least decent effort on simulating real life racing series, being realistic and having a respectable offline gameplay, such as GTR 2, Grand Prix 4, F1C 99-02, Richard Burns Rally, NR2003 - those sims which I play or used to play come to my mind. I haven't tried Assetto Corsa Competizione yet, maybe one day I will take a glance. Speaking of rFactor 2 again, don't see any hope for a massive revolution in the future. Ever since rF2 and S397 are under Motorsport Games' umbrella, the emphasise on online competitive racing will only get bigger - of course at the expense of any effort for offline modes. Motosport Games alongside with iRacing are riding on the bandwagon of trying to make simracing a big deal of its own, which I find quite amusing, because they are generating quite a new fanbase within the simracing community. Why am I thinking like this? From my observations, some of the new breed of simracers are not even fans of real world motorsport... This is something I completely don't get it... For me being a simracer has to be connected to being a fan of real world motorsport (in my case - endurance racing and WRC). Nowadays it is not that obvious, which I find completely out of the norm. Or maybe I am just getting old.

    So a lot of oval AI issues stem from the game engine; ISI-motor has issues, and it powers rFactor 1, Automobilista 1, and RaceRoom. ISI-Motor 2 powers rFactor 2 and is somehow even worse. the Madness engine is apparently built off the ISI-Motor 2 engine, which means PC1, PC2, PC3 and Automobilista 2 all aren't fit for oval racing (Good luck to Reiza as they try to implement oval racing!). What's the modern oval simulator? Not iRacing because 1) I don't have $10k lying around and 2) the tire model has no slip to it, though their AI looks promising. Assetto Corsa? Highly unlikely that they'd voluntarily add it first party for AC2, since mods don't work well with AC.
    Dare I say this and get caught in the hype, but if Rennsport is running it's own physics, is that possibly the golden ticket? I just hope it's not an NFT game lol

    I have to agree with everyone else, AI races on rF2 are just not a thing, stop doing it, I've used just to accelerate the track wear when needed for testing but even that the race line was wrong, very narrow etc. This video is just wrong, rF2 is not made for AI races, is for online races, leagues, championships, either the mod is good or not, that's depends which one, who made it, etc. Because sometimes you can get really good ones and race or watch some really good races, despite the very old graphic engine, glitches, bugs, disconnections from server etc.

    As Die Hard Nascar fan as you put it, you should not be using rFactor 2 for Nascar content at all.
    However, this is not the sum of your full review is it ? What about the other content and road / street racing which rFactor 2 just shines including the AI which is really quit good.
    iRacing AI for ovals is equally as bad as rFactor 2 AI for ovals IMO. rFactor 2 road/street AI is quit good IMO.

    They released AI patch and according to some people AI is now really good in this sim, one of the best out there. I noticed this video was year ago, the patch came last summer so these things are fixed. Brake checking, quickly going on/off throttle and brakes, smoother steering, cars spinning and hitting walls on some circuits. I hear they are now good to race against, they can be aggressive even but fair.

  • @TheStobe84
    @TheStobe84 Год назад

    Drafting exists with AI, it's just that even though they have a perfect draft and big speed difference, they won't try to overtake the other AI because there is a roll against their aggressiveness and if it fails, no matter how much it would make sense, they don't try to overtake. They rather tuck in behind until the next corner has passed even if it slows them down. That is why you see cars driving the exact same amount of distance away from each other. They get stuck in this behavior. Pretty sure they treat humans same, even if you make a mistake and are slower, even on a long straight they might just tuck behind you even if it would be an easy pass where they just fly past you. They would have to re-do the AI completely.
    It should be based on other calculations if they want to pass or not. calculation how much further the next corner is and how big the speed difference is between the two cars plus a gray area where it's difficult to judge so it comes down to aggressiveness if they try to get the nose in, or brake deeper in the corner and trying to cut inside, which they are not capable of doing.

    I'm gonna be honest, the broken AI and the DLC pricing model are the sole problems that are discouraging me from buying rFactor 2.
    I am a casual Assetto Corsa player and I am enjoying AC even though it isn't perfect.
    The state of the sim racing industry makes me sad. I honestly want to expand my horizons with games other than AC, but to be honest, It looks like my only (modern racing sim) option as of now is "Choose which fundamentally broken racing simulator to buy; an expansion pack for PCars 2 (AMS 2) (The former I own and immediately threw away), a broken mess that requires you to tweak ini files in order for it to work properly (rFactor 2), a sim with a decent online system but a terrible business model and strict sporting code (iRacing), or a somewhat broken but free game with a $100 content pass and other cars (RaceRoom)".
    What do I do? (I also cannot reply to comments for some reason)

      Install rallysimfans RBR and give up on offline circuit racing, because none of these developers care about it. They are all chasing the mythical esport/online scene and trying to copy iracing and it's going horribly for all of them. I don't care what engine these sims use, hire a god damn software engineer who knows how to program AI and start from scratch.

    So if this was rFactor 1, I'd have some suggestions on how to improve the AI.
    In your PLR file, you'd want to turn on AutoCalibrateAI=1. Then run a test day, let the AI plug away at several laps. That would minimize that wiggle and brake checking at the start finish line.
    Then I'd head over to the car's .HDV file. Change AIPerfUsage around a little. That's a finicky one, so I don't know immediately what to set it to. Just trial and error. But that will help the AI keep from colliding with you, and slowing down around each other.
    Finally, if it seems like they have too much grip, and hug the low line unrealistically, I'd go to the track's .GDB and .TDF and start lowering AIDryGrip a little. Set it to 0.90 and see what happens, go from there kinda thing. The idea would be to try and get them to hold their line without the ability to change it with super grip.
    Mess with some talent files for Aggression and other numbers. Mess with the AILimiter.
    The problem is that rFactor 2 was built by hiding all of these files away in a zipped up package. Which is nice in theory, but in practice, it makes editing a mod's behavior tedious at best, and buggy because you have to keep track of how you're packaging things carefully.
    If you want good AI behavior from a similar engine, check out Automobilista 1. It's like the sequel to rFactor, really.

I guess we will see if they have success on solving AI in next quarter update in best case. But I would not be surprised if there aren't going to be any serious AI improvements for much much longer. But once they actually learn how rF2 physics and AI are are stitched, then there probably will be lots of progress and fast.

    Few days ago I tried the same combo (with the 2015 stock car). It seems they fixed some of the issues, they don't drive on the apron and they don't brake check at the start/finish line. Also my races were much more tightly packed for the whole stint, I had 2-3 pack of cars for the whole of races.
    Drafting still doesn't work between AIs (I mean it works but instead of overtaking each other they brake) and the bug with changing the inside/outside line at the start is still there. But not with the Daytona mod in the workshop (which looks as good as the official track and it's free) so the guy who made the AI at S397 is still learning things about modding the AI I guess.

    You're right.
    But I'd suggest you go for the big-name title Games for your hop in AI races.
    You mix up or compare Simracing titles with games with way more funds and much less real-time simulation.
    The simulation genre still consists of fairly small development teams working on a very complex part of esports.
    Since the pandemic Simracing took off after 30 years, and finally investments are made.
    I'm following this development from the very beginning in the 90's and although your comments are on point, you're not helping out in any way.
    The problem is not only present in RF2, it's a issue in every traditional Sim title.
    I've learned to have patience over the years and enjoy what we have, and what's in store.
    A laserscanned track and four detailed cars for 15 bucks is a steal when you compare it to DLC for A titles.
    This will get better as long as we keep supporting it.
