I doubt it... Arin sounded like a liberal pussy talking about how "racist" the game was every five seconds and was getting pissed off at Dan for "making fun" of the Indian heritage.
That was very racist, Danny. I am so disappointed! (I actually don't give a shit.) However, Arin is completely wrong. Big surprise, right. While my own nation (Mohawk) were more into silent ambushes and guerrilla tactics (we have been compared in more modern times to ninjas, and have been jokingly referred to as 'Indian ninjas'), there are many of the First Nations tribes who used loud, whooping war cries to scare there enemies. A couple in the midwest even used calls similar to what you hear in Hollywood movies to echo the sound off the surrounding terrain and make there enemies think there are more of them, and even confuse what direction they are attacking from. Danny is correct. It is a very frightening tactic.
wait, there is an Native American nation called Mohawk?! Is that where the hair style comes from? Is it similar to their head dress or something? Also is the term nation and tribe interchangeable in this situation or is there an important difference.
FUN FACT: The original Japanese version of this game was based on Journey to the West, the classic Chinese tale of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King with an infinitely extensible quarterstaff, a cloud he can surf on, and the ability to effortlessly steal the spotlight from the story's actual protagonist (Xuanzang, a pacifist monk sent to India to retrieve Buddhist scriptures). Why they chose to replace the guy that inspired the existence of Goku with this bit of racial insensitivity is a mystery for the ages. (Edited for grammar and clarity.)
Anti-Stupid I know, it's rather sad... it's like the boy who cried wolf... do it too many tines and noone will take you seriously when the real wolf shows up.
I apply a syringe full of natural spring water with crushed ice directly into my ball sack every morning. My urine (I refer to it as 'purine') is impressively translucent every time. Must recommend.
If you hold UP, you can block the bamboo spikes and other things that try to hit your head. If you hold UP and attack, you can attack up. You can also do the upthrust and downthrust in the air like Zelda 2. AND if you hit select after you beat one of the bosses, they all give you different powers like Megaman. This is a hidden gem for the NES. Used to play it all the time
I wanted this comment to be longer, but my phone is so slow that typing is an absolute nightmare. But I guess that's just what happens when you leave the job to Asians. *Ba duum duum duum dudum*
As a native american I kinda forget how little most Americans know about the indigenous people. I'm not so much offended as I am just surprised with how much I know about how different various first nations are that I take for granted
This game is actually really good, it is a megaman clone kinda, like you get powers from the bosses some of them for damage or some of them help you like rush, you can get a cloud that you can fly on for a short period. The last stage you need to utilize the powers to get through it. But there are alot of small features too, like collecting the gourds to increase your health, which you will definately need. There is an equivalant to energy tanks as well. The music is some of the best on the NES and the levels are beautiful. The enemies vary greatly in not only how they look but what they do as well as the bosses. It's a crime that this series didn't continue but it was released late in the NES's life toward the end. I recommend that everyone play this through at least once, it's also pretty hard at some points so be prepared. This should be in the hands of anyone that considers themselves a NES collector, it's that good.
Another great hidden gem is Kickmaster, which I believe has been rediscovered and is well sought after now. If you like Castlevania, I think you'll rather enjoy Kickmaster.
DUDE. This game is clearly based on Journey to the west. They just gave the main character a feather to make him look more like a native american and less like Goku
It says something about the education system that they (and most of us) don’t know enough about First Nation culture to even know what would be culturally insensitive. :-/
It really sucks that the american school system doesn't teach more about their first nations peoples, because honestly the kids of america need to learn more about the people who were there first from shit other than Johnny Depp in The Lone Ranger and Cochella "Costumes."
"I was just trying to think of another culture that we could appropriate" *Looks at the long list of games where they played as a fat, Italian plumber*
It's a bit odd that every other person in these comments is arguing about whether or not the game is racist, and nobody is mentioning that this game was originally based on Journey To The West and had absolutely nothing to do with Native Americans before it was localized for US audiences. Saiyūki World 2: Tenjōkai no Majin. Look it up. Not taking either side of the arguments, but I am saying that the game itself wasn't originally intended to be racist, since it was originally about a monkey who knows martial arts. If ya'll think it's racist, keep in mind that it wasn't that way until the US got a hold of it.
It does have it's flaws, like the fact that most of the powers you get range from useless to barely useful, but it looks great and the bosses are pretty unique and fun to figure out. You do start over the level when you die, but the levels are fairly short and 99% of the time you're going to die fighting the boss. Plus you have infinite continues. The final boss is a little disappointing in that he's super tough and really the only way to beat him is spam your final power. Overall it stands up to a lot of great NES games. Very playable and fun.
I did a quick google on aboriginal as I heard Dan and was surprised to find it's just a term for indigenous people, its just weird being in Australia the indigenous population are just called Aboriginals.
I feel like this game could’ve been mega popular if it had a bit more polishing and was a lil more balanced, cause damn the tree monster boss thing and the cliff level looked wayyy difficult

I think that a game like this based on Native American culture is a cool idea. I mean, the merging of cultural ideas can create some cool shit. The issue with using it like this game does is that its only vaguely Native American, as if they half-assed the execution of the delivery of the theme. Maybe find an actual tribe to use and infuse their mythos into the plot of this game. For example, if you make the character Algonquian, maybe have him fight Wendingos and other wild spirits.
That's because the game's protagonist wasn't originally Native American, the protagonist was Sun Wukong in the original Japanese release. For some bizarre reason when it was reskinned for the west, for possibly being "too Japanese" as a lot of games were back then, they only really changed the protagonist's appearance and the title.
I'm not sure how much of a percentage of native american i am, but i found that i am some percent of Arapahoe-Apache, and i found this vid HILARIOUS, HAHAHA! Love you Game Grumps, and thanx for the laughs.
In today's episode of "arin gets offended at something he doesn't fully understand" Arin gives incorrect information about the Native American war cry. Which could be done in shrieks, yells, and ululations (that thing danny did when the game started). While it's true that each individual tribe had their own war cries and methods of telling 2 different tribes apart based off of them, the fact of the matter is that there are tribes who did that exact thing. They didn't do the hand over the mouth thing which was done by people who couldn't imitate the ululating sound naturally by moving their tongue or jokingly (and somewhat racist as well) in the old kids cartoons of the past. But they did do that ululating sound. It's also a thing used in many cultures all over the world. Specifically in the middle east and various parts of asia. But let's let Arin stand on his soapbox and get upset.
I read your comment and I can sum it up as "Arin is dumb because he thinks he knows what he is talking about. Now let me explain exactly what Arin said." Like, come on, dude
TheRunaway115 lol half of my family comes from south south Cherokee tribes and tbh this game is awesome and funny as hell, lol show it to them they might get a kick out of it
I'm native. I personally don't think it's racist, but I have alot of relatives who probably would, like just thinking "the white world is depicting us. well fuck them." that's just the attitude some people have It's not full of false stereotypes, and it doesn't seem to be meant as a mockery. you play as the protagonist, killing snails and demons n shit. bfd. for the record, Cleveland Indians did the right thing, imo. that logo is objectively offensive. nobody wants to look like that.
I believe the "Indian War Cry" was inspired heavily by the "Rebel Yell," from the American Civil War; they had a whooping, high-pitched scream that they would do during charges, both to scare the enemy and bolster their morale. You can find recordings of veterans doing it.
I mean, in his defense there are so many things that are considered racist now that you have to put in a lot of effort not to be unintentionally racist. I still have a hard time figuring out if its racist to call someone black or African American so I just avoid the topic of peoples race completely.
I played this by stealing it from someone before Christmas. I was peeking at gifts and found it. Opened it like a surgeon and then put it back just the night before Christmas. It was a cool game.
Now I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure this game isn't about an Indian dude considering there's a guy who looks like akuma in the back ground, this is most likely Nintendo porting a Japanese title to the states and retooling the story and characters although I don't see how that would work and the fact that jaleco decided not to put in ANY kind of plot to make the player get invested in the story .
from what i gather cultural appropriation, aka something far left people use to try and re-segregate everyone, because they don't understand that culture isn't static and is constantly changing and mixing and matching with other cultures, and a culture that does get appropriated doesn't die it just changes. seriously, all i've seen from this game is a native american kid being a badass, i'm fairly certain native americans would appreciate having representation more than hate being appropriated.
crash979797 you're such a lazy minded person. "It's stereotypical, therefore it's racist." Nothing wrong with that logic. Might as well stop there, huh?
...it was a game that was supposed to be about son goku and his journey but the American developers decided just toss out the character that made it make sense and just toss a native in so it'll make more sense to Americans...Is offensive. It is now and it was damn sure offensive enough when I was a kid for nimishoomis (loosely translated to grandfather) to remove my game, sit me down, and explain the difference between paying homage and making a mockery and then giving me the choice of what to do next...never expected a games grumps video to send me down memory lane
IL res here...speaking of getting rid of Native American mascots, wish they'd bring back Chief Illinewek. They literally designed him to be as accurate as possible and had the support of a few tribes.
I am AMAZED that this video has the like bar ratio that it does. I was totally expecting just a mile of grey. Good job everyone, not taking things so seriously.
Welcome back to more games already played on this channel grumps. But in all honesty, considering how they aren't straight shitting on the game, I'm really happy to get more Whomp 'Em in my life.
I'm a Native American. I'm Lakota, from the Oglala Sioux Tribe. So like, I feel like that whole trope of the Hollywood Indian "battle cry" sounds similar to trilling. Trilling is just saying "lelelelelelele" super fast and loud.

It is very fun actually. It's one of those NES games that wasn't very popular but is surprisingly good.

I did a quick google on aboriginal as I heard Dan and was surprised to find it's just a term for indigenous people, its just weird being in Australia the indigenous population are just called Aboriginals.
Aboriginal is more of an Aussie term, if I'm correct, not so much used to refer to NZ natives.
So many one-offs and I love it

Does Grumps face cam?
Never
I believe the "Indian War Cry" was inspired heavily by the "Rebel Yell," from the American Civil War; they had a whooping, high-pitched scream that they would do during charges, both to scare the enemy and bolster their morale. You can find recordings of veterans doing it.
i love how arin is so afraid of being racist

Being part of the LA entertainment circle means you have to be at least complacent to the S J W
KeijiMaeda86 thats sad
I mean, in his defense there are so many things that are considered racist now that you have to put in a lot of effort not to be unintentionally racist. I still have a hard time figuring out if its racist to call someone black or African American so I just avoid the topic of peoples race completely.
Jolly Reaper Well that just makes you color-blind racist /s
I think about doki doki so often that Dan referencing "get low get low" made me laugh even thought it was so out of context and under the radar
I'm from Cleveland and I always love hearing people talk about the Indians logo

The tropical background at 6:46 makes me think of the background in Kirby's Adventures in Dreamland

LilRico Jr THANK YOU CLEVELAND!
I played this by stealing it from someone before Christmas. I was peeking at gifts and found it. Opened it like a surgeon and then put it back just the night before Christmas. It was a cool game.
Honestly though, without racial and ethnical stereotypes Punch Out wouldn't have been nearly as memorable as it is.
Truth. It helps when _everybody_ is hilariously stereotypical.

That actually is a real war cry that is where the Rebel Yell came from in the South we imitated the Natives. And what is so racist about this game?
from what i gather cultural appropriation, aka something far left people use to try and re-segregate everyone, because they don't understand that culture isn't static and is constantly changing and mixing and matching with other cultures, and a culture that does get appropriated doesn't die it just changes.
seriously, all i've seen from this game is a native american kid being a badass, i'm fairly certain native americans would appreciate having representation more than hate being appropriated.
It's just stereotyping. That's why it's considered offensive.
it isn't really a stereotype though, it's just a person in native american clothing.
crash979797 you're such a lazy minded person. "It's stereotypical, therefore it's racist."
Nothing wrong with that logic.
I think a lot of people would agree you should finish this :D
It wouldn't be the first time they've started this game
Yeah this didn't look like it deserved one off treatment. They do this to a lot of games unfortunately.
I am AMAZED that this video has the like bar ratio that it does. I was totally expecting just a mile of grey. Good job everyone, not taking things so seriously.
Hey early club.
I see u ;3c
Everytime he takes damage he makes a HILARIOUS looking face!😲😂🤣
How old is this game?? o_o
Came out in 1991.
Older than your mom
Booty O Jay you're not funny.
Have you never seen an NES game before?
It says 1990 in the description so 27-28 years old depending on the release month.
Welcome back to more games already played on this channel grumps.
But in all honesty, considering how they aren't straight shitting on the game, I'm really happy to get more Whomp 'Em in my life.
Excessive use of dope really lowers it's complimentary value.
Jarl Balgruuf idk man. I found this episode to be hella dope, literally.
That's skooma for you.
I loved playing this game as a Kid, took me forever to learn that you got more attacks from beating the bosses.
This game is politically incorrect, but it's not racist.
Mr Shambleface this is so relevant, so many people lump "politically incorrect" and "racism" in the same category when they don't always intersect
This game is great! Loved it when I was a child holds up really well a hidden gem. Hoping for a part 2!
Why are there so many fake Game Grump spam bots?
I'm a Native American. I'm Lakota, from the Oglala Sioux Tribe. So like, I feel like that whole trope of the Hollywood Indian "battle cry" sounds similar to trilling. Trilling is just saying "lelelelelelele" super fast and loud.
