    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  Год назад

      Oh I can totally sympathise as I did a lot of hiking in Southern Africa as a child so snakes and scorpions and ticks were always front and centre, along with a few bigger critters. The baboons scared me. NZ tramping can be so much less stressful (🤔 minus the sandflies, quickly rising rivers, and changeable dangerous weather conditions 😅)

    What an incredible camping spot! I love to camp and would like to do so solo but am timid about doing it in the places that I have access to. We have lots of Crownland (public land) but it is frequented by a lot of people. We do have black bears and coyotes but those I do not mind, it is the two legged critters that I am timid about. Perhaps that is what the person meant by why take the risk, being a female alone camping rather than terrain, weather, etc. I do agree with you however on assessing the risks and preparing for them. I do many things alone like hiking, boating and just having coffee in the woods. I think it is the thought of darkness and not being able to see my surroundings. I certainly envy you for being able to do it, good on you! :) :) Thanks for sharing your wonderful night out.

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  Год назад +1

      I totally agree with you Jacqueline in regards to the possible risks posed by the 4 vs 2 legged animal varieties (lol). That is always on my mind. I have my little strategies to help me stay remote and hopefully under the radar. I'm always asking myself is this real or perceived risk. Often it's the fear of the fear (especially in the night) that can be so troubling. If I feel settled, knowing I have followed my rules for increasing my safety, then I can sleep easy at night.

      Thanks Aussie Donald Duck! Some times I get some (thoughtless) comments about me talking, suggesting I shouldn't, but that's not the kind of channel I want to create. Personally I feel the magic is in the scenery, the sounds of nature AND the connection. The way you can feel like you are coming along when you know the person and they share their musings about the way they are experiencing the environment. Thanks for the thoughtful comment. I appreciate it.

    Greetings once again from Aylesbury UK, what an absolutely delightful video, keep it up Cathy. This may or may not help you but I thought I'd suggest that you might have a google for the 'Agawa Canyon Boreal 21" - folding saw ? I don't know if they're available in NZ (I can't see why not) it would 100% make your wood prep so much easier but they are a bit pricey however, do make sure you're wearing gloves though !
    Kind regards to You and your family and a cuddle for Indi too.

    I have missed seeing Indi on in this video, but I know she will be being looked after at home just fine.
    I love your comments about taking risks. This is so true in many aspects of life, with putting in place mitigations balancing out the likelihood verse the unknown. I thought it was very well described.

    Hi Kathy. Is it C or K?
    Love your videos. I sub to 90 channels and i scroll over loads but yours have become a breakfast favourite on my days off. I see from the comments you get a few negatives about you talking too much. Ignore such people. It’s the chat that sets the scene, makes it natural and makes me feel I’m there…so please don’t shut up 😀 Watching your videos is like watching a friend. You come over as being a really capable and grounded person
    I’m amazed at the amount of gear you carry and you seem to hike quite a distance! What pack weight would you say was “too much” and how far are you walking? I’m being nosy (or perhaps obsessing about it) because I got into wild camping during Covid and I’m not as young as I was and I am always try to shed ounces. Glad to hear you are planning on more videos and I hope the channel keeps growing well.

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  Год назад +1

      Thank you for the lovely thought out comment. I really appreciate the encouragement. Great that you are getting in to wild camping. It is so addictive. I am not too sure of the weight of my packs as I don't tend to weigh them, I just don't combine a heavy pack with a long or steep trip. A heavy pack is always one where Indi is with me and it is winter. It means a 2 person tent, 2 sleeping bags, 2 mats, 2 lots of food. eeek. So if I want to go high in winter I will leave Indi at home and go with just the one person tent. Or if I am taking Indi and it is winter I will choose a low lying area and a short trip to an off the beaten track spot, just an hour or so. For me it is not all about slogging it out, just about getting out there to enjoy it. If it is summer and it is just me I will take just a tarp and some light weight food and head up high into the tops of the mountains. Next time I weigh my pack I'll try and remember to include the info in the video as other people have also asked. Happy camping, Cathy.

    Nicely done. Thank you for sharing. I share your bond with nature; unfortunately in the US I have to share it with parasites (very small black legged ticks-Lyme disease) and predators. Usually if you leave them alone they’ll leave you alone. I once shared my lean-to with an adult Copperhead. When I pulled my ground cover up after a week, he was right there trying to stay warm like me. He went his way and I went my way. No harm no foul.
    Indeed you and Tony (and the other nature lovers) have a paradise to camp in.

I grew up in Africa and have strong memories of all the strategies we had to adopt to avoid snakes, parasites and animals in the outdoors..... I have not so fond memories of stepping on an Adder, scorpions crawling out of our tent, and picking off ticks after returning home. To name a few. Fun and games hey?! lol

    How does your husband feel about you being all alone in the places you camp , have you ever felt unsafe,

    • @adventureot
      @adventureot  Год назад +1

      I truly hope it doesn’t go that way here. Restrictions seem to be creeping into all areas of life. The freedom to responsibly enjoy the outdoor world feels like an essential element of the human experience. To be honest in NZ the risks are very small. My husband has a huge amount of respect for my skills, experience and ability to evaluate risk, so doesn’t worry about me. I sometimes feel potentially unsafe, but then will adapt my plans accordingly. There is no way I would stick something out if I thought I was unsafe. That would defeat the entire purpose of restoring myself with time in the outdoors.

      Hi Tina. I made a short one about a year ago that was included in a video made for my Buy Me a Coffee members. The tricky thing with releasing a 'different' style of vid to everyone is YT counts it in the channel stats and if it isn't as popular as the 'normal' videos then the whole channel is affected, sadly. So all those extra type videos can only be released separately from the main channel. Lol, long answer, sorry. Bye

      Yes I gather that there are a lot more things for you to have to consider. Here it is reasonably safe if you are well prepared. Poor weather, wind chill, rising rivers, getting lost, and falls are our biggest concerns, but not wild animals, and only to a very small degree other people.
