Challenging Mid-Winter Camp in a Mountain Valley - Campfire Cooking

- I love the challenge of getting out into the mountains and wild camping on my own. No matter how I plan and prepare there are always unexpected challenges that come along. This trip was no different. It was utterly beautiful walking up through the valley, crossing rivers and absorbing the wonder of the outdoors. I was able to build a warm campfire to cook over and enjoy a wine and a delicious meal. Pancakes for breakfast and a lovely coffee. I also had to deal with my air mattress going flat, freezing temperatures, and the cold of a sunless winter valley.
It is always worth it to get outdoors. The challenges that I face build my resourcefulness and give me the confidence to face other things in my life.
All round this was a beautiful trip, in sights, sounds, experiences and learnings. I hope you enjoy it.

It's confusing for me to imagine it is winter there when I can see trees with leaves. So I Googled it to find out that winters in New Zealand are a lot milder. The North Island experiences temperatures between 7°C and 16°C (45°F to 60°F), while the South Island can have temperatures ranging from -3°C to 8°C (27°F to 46°F). Where I am, here in Southern Ontario, Canada, winter temperatures usually stay below freezing, with averages ranging from -10°C to -20°C (14°F to -4°F) and can go even lower (-30 to -40°C) during cold snaps. So for me here in Canada I'm used to winter having naked trees with no leaves. But we do have incredible autumns with yellow, orange, red and brown leaves that are a joy to behold. Thanks again for what you share with us and how enjoyable you make it with your charming personality.
Virtually all of New Zealand’s native forest trees are evergreen.🙂
One of these days I want travel to Canada and/or Alaska in winter just to experience the incredible cold you mention. I really can not imagine. That is serious cold! It is a lot milder here. The temperatures you mention are pretty accurate for what I experience. For example today, in the city, alongside the coast, it is 6 degrees C. It gets a lot colder the higher from sea level you travel and we get a lot of wind chill higher up on the mountains, which is often what takes tourists by surprise and lands them in trouble. It can be pleasant in the car park and then dangerously cold 4 hours later up at 2,000m in the mountains.
As ndoa4223 mentions, over 95% of our native trees/plants are evergreens.
Cathy is right when she mentions the contrasts of temperature and factoring wind chill. It can be brutal in winter, especially in the South Island. Even in coastal areas frosts will get to minus 5, inland to minus 10. The coldest temp ever recorded was minus 25 at Ranfurly, Central Otago. Everything is so damp and bone-chilling, Sudden Valley is no exception - very little sun in June. Yet AdventureOT takes it in her stride! Great to know that foil blanket did such a good job mitigating heat loss.
@@jthomas332 Sorry, for a Canadian that just doesn't seem that cold. It's hotter here the last few years due to Climate Change but -10 to -5 is the hottest it would get in winter. It's not nice but so much better than -30 where your mustache freezes and the hair in you nose. Snow gets really slippery at the real low temperatures and you can't stay out for long. I'm talking before wind chill. If it got above zero the snow would melt that used to never happen between November and March here. I think I would enjoy your winters more than ours and I'm in the south of Canada. don't think I could live in the north. Lol. And yes I was amazed at the emergency blanket too. Good to hear they actually are useful. Cheers.
Good old practical, no drama presentation laced with hearty kiwi humour and some pretty good tips as well 😅. Thankyou
Cheers. That’s the style I like to watch so it’s the style I like to bring 😁
inspiring camp
So kind of you to say so. Thank you.
Great camp out! Loved it as always Cathy!!
Thank you Pranesh!
I use a backpack cot by Alps to keep me off the ground. Expensive but compact, lightweight and easy to setup and tear down.
That sounds good. I am going to have a look into that.
Thank you for sharing your trips with us. A little something towards treats and/ or equipment . ❤😊 👋 to Indi ..stay safe. 😊

It was a good night. Pancakes looked lovely.🥞🔥
Thanks. So true, the trip and the pancakes were great.
Made my survival blanket into a poncho when i had forgot my wet weather jacket. Always take a roll of gaffa tape. lol.
Thankyou for all the vids . tasmania.
Good idea. The old gaffa tape always comes in handy some how.
❤ I’m happy for you, you stayed warm through the night. Love the meal 😋going to make it when i go camping ⛺️. Cuddles for Indie😘
Thanks Arlette. Indi says thanks for the extra cuddle.

Good to know about the survival blanket!
Yip, small, light and very useful.
Great video...I know you will have 10,000 and more🎉
Fingers crossed!
Another great video Cathy👍It even looks cold at moment 🥶. Nice for you to go back to where you started your adventures. Hope you get the tent you are after, I know someone who has got one and they are brilliant tents. You get what you pay for as the saying goes! Keep warm😏
Thanks so much Simon
Those emergency blankets are well worth the money. I have several.
Good idea. So small and light for what they offer.
Loved the camp, thanks again for sharing Cathy.
My pleasure.
The nature you have here is so awsome. It is just so beautiful. Great camp and hike adventure ❤❤❤
Thank you very much.
Thankyou for a great video, you are so natural, respectful, and creative. Love your videos😊
Thank you so much. I appreciate hearing that! 😁
Watching from Glasgow, Scotland..❤
Hi there. Thanks so much for watching, and commenting.
First off, love your videos. Watching it makes me feel like I’m there. You are so brave to go solo camping in the mountains. I’m scared to attempt it on my own because of potential danger due to people or animals. Maybe one day… but until then, I will enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing and Hello to Indie❤.
Thanks so much. I will give Indi and hug from you.
Hiya Cathy 👋

Thank you for seeing all the work that I put in Vivian. I am half way through editing the next one (with Indi in it, yay!), so your words are spurring me on.
I really enjoy your videos, Cathy. I appreciate all the effort you put into filming beautiful New Zealand and the camping/cooking, and Indie of course;) Thank you and love from Oregon ❤
Thank you for saying so Sunnidazed. I appreciate that.
Another good video Cathy. Have you thought about bringing a Nalgene bottle with you so you can heat water right before bed and put it next to you in your sleeping bag to help keep you warm? Just a thought. I always enjoy your videos! Take care!
No I hadn't but that is a good idea. Sometimes I squash in a small hot water bottle but why take something extra when the Nalgene bottle can be both my water bottle and hot water bottle? Good idea.
Thanks for a great video my friend ❤
You are welcome. Thanks.
Hey 👋 Cathy I can't believe I missed this camp ,well it has come in handy, getting my fix while waiting for more Videos 😂Beautiful location again your fire 🔥 was so nice to watch ,yep I am a fire fildler I cannot tell a lie😂 as I also love cooking on one ,there is just something about it ,If ya know ya know you😅you commented on your food tasted awesome, well it sure looked it 😋. Wise decision with the survival blanket, definitely a must to always have 👍Thankyou Cathy 💖
Hello my fellow fire fidler, lol. Thanks so much. You won't have to wait long for the next vid. It is uploading right now.
@@adventureot am I excited YES 😂
I love my OneTigris true 4 season 2 man tent (Stella). I love the way you let manufacturers know what you need
Thanks for the recommendation. I will look into that tent.
🎉 love watching your videos l,keep up the hard work.😊
Thank you! Will do!
Always enjoy your videos. Be super careful blowing on embers like you did. Lots of people burned badly doing that.
Thanks for the reminder.
Friday night here I was camping in Coopers Rocks State Forest in West Virginia with my youngest daughter and a few of her friends. I was really hoping your vid would pop up and I could watch it and say I went camping with you! Poo, it came up Saturday evening. The timing was not impeccable at all! Another great Adventure OT. Thanks again Cathy!
Ahhh man, sorry about that!! I hope the camping trip went well. Full respect to you for taking a bunch of kiddos (actually I have no idea how old they are) out camping. I am so grateful to my parents for introducing me to the outdoors and building a life long love for it.
@adventureot LOL, I was part of the Friday Evening "Family Camp". My youngest daughter hosting. She is 37! Saturday was the friends camping. I wasn't permitted to stay! I knew many of her friends from when they used to come to our home for fun stuff. Great food and humorous stories Friday night n breakfast Sat. morn!
Thanks for the shout out! You have inspired me to get a new tarp, dig out the pack and sleeping bag and head out for a solo camp for the first time! Congratulations on your 2nd Anniversary, a great camp and delicious food.
Sorry about the mat, I know how that feels after discovering mine had a hole on the West Highland Way🙄 Looking forward to more adventures with you and Indi😊
Oh that is exciting. I really hope you do that. Report back, I would love to know how your first solo camp goes. Have fun.
I enjoy watching your vlogs i missed a few ,so i got to catch up luv watching your winter vlogs stay safe and look after yourself out on your trips
Thanks Keith, will do. Glad you got to watch it and enjoyed it.
Happy 2 year Anniversary 😊
Thank you!! 😊
Your videos are always one of the week's highlights.
Hello from Pharr Texas
That is so cool! Thanks for letting me know.
NZ is beautiful! I know as I live on the West Coast of the South Island. Arthur's Pass area has stunning scenery that I see only from the road nowadays. Especially loved the rocky rivers you crossed and those quiet times at the campfire. You let us the viewer enjoy the moment also. Thank you!
It sure is! SI NZ is a pretty special place. We are very lucky. Thanks for letting me know about what parts of the video you enjoyed.
Enjoying your videos from Canada 🇨🇦. The scenery of the mountains is breathtaking. Thanks for sharing your adventures.
So nice to know that people thousands of miles away are able to share in my journeys with me. Thanks for stopping by to let me know you enjoyed the video. It is appreciated.
@@adventureot I live 70 miles west of Toronto. In the winter months I would never be able to cross streams in my shorts. I hope you will do a snow adventure this July or August up in the high elevations. It is interesting for me to see winters in the Southern Hemisphere. Looking forward for more content in the upcoming months.
This is my hope. I would love a high alpine snow trip.
Thank you for sharing your camping experiences in New Zealand.
We love watching your channel. ❤❤
We are watching you from West Texas, USA!
I am so glad you enjoy watching. Thanks for letting me know.
Congrats on 2 years on RUclips Cathy. Your videos have always been entertaining and your viewership shows in how much you've grown
Thank you John.
❤❤❤Good morning Cathy happy Saturday love from fiji island. Sooo beautiful camping video very nice ❤❤❤Take care ❤❤❤
Good morning! Thank you
@@adventureot most welcome Cathy take care
Just watch your great outdoor video. Love all your camps. Nice and relaxed this one. I smiled when i saw the shelter on your way out. I remember that camp and video. Again the good old tarp was used if i remember well. You have some good places to camp over there in NZ. Thanks for sharing your adventures. I really look forward to them. 🏕🏕
Awesome! Thank you Caroloum.
👍👍👍 .. nice 😊.
'Playing with Matches' .. memories of a (slightly 😏) misspent youth. That, and collecting and selling newspapers for enough cents to buy (fire) crackers at the General Dealer down in Umgeni Road (he stocked a selection .. ranging from 'squibs' to the double-wick big ones year-round) and then 'blowing up' all and sundry thereafter.
A cosy little camp fire makes for an ideal companion when solo. A very good listener with soft murmuring replies accompanied by a dancing, flickering light display.
The ideal companion. Yes, so true, the fire is like a friend. Well said. And as for the misspent youth, matches and fire crackers sound like a bit of well spent fun. Ha ha
@@adventureot 👍
I watch your video and wish to be there with you, it has 37 Celsius outside, in the sun more - don`t want to go out. Great the survival blanket worked so well, good to know.
Oh my goodness, that is so so hot.
Thanks Cathy, for another great one ❤
Glad you enjoyed it!
Bedankt
You are so welcome. Thank you so much!
Congrats on your 2 yrs 🎉 love watching your adventures
Thanks so much!
Another Awesome adventure
Glad you enjoyed it Vincent
always bring a closed cell pad. Great Video.
Good idea, and then it doubles as a sitting pad, but I can also use it instead of an air mat for when I take Indi with me. You have got me thinking.
Lovely trip. Food looked amazing. Hello to Indi. So glad you do things to keep her safe.
Thanks Nancy
Thanks so much! My husband and I enjoy watching you!!! ❤️
I am so glad you both enjoy watching the channel. Thank you very very much for your support! Cathy

LUV YOU CATHY,,, and of course beautiful Indi....you are amazing at all the hard work you put into your camps...keep going cath, you are amazing....xxxx
That is so kind of you. Thank you so much for the encouragement and the appreciation.
🔥 fire is my favorite 🔥
Same here. A fire really makes a winter camp.
One pancake is indeed never enough!! Thanks for another excellent camp, Cathy!
Ha ha, thanks Greg. I can put this towards more pancakes. Thanks so much!!
@@adventureot When I camp (usually off my motorbike) I always take one of those shaker pancake bottles, where you just add water and shake like crazy!
Hello from Connecticut. I Love your videos with and without Indi. Look forward to you reaching 10,000 subscribers. Thanks for sharing!😊
Thank you so much 🙂
Hi. I watch your video a couple of days ago I was taking care of mom in the hospital . . Sorry I’m late leaving a message. Love it very, much so. Smart thinking about the blanket. You are in winter. And I’m in hot weather summer time. Love Louise Canada
Because parts of Canada are often so very very cold I find it hard to imagine it being hot there, especially as I sit here rugged up. I am so glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks
@@adventureot hi there Cathy. Here in Niagara Falls. It’s 28c. Feels like 36c with the humidity. In the winter months it can drop down to -15 degrees
Wow that is some temperature difference between the seasons.
Watching from Terre Haute, Indiana, USA😊
Thanks Kimberley. I admit I had to google where Terre Haute is, but now I know. Thanks for stopping by to say hi.
Great video! After watching this I will now put my survival blanket in the gear I’m taking out. Thanks for being the Guinea pig for us. Thank you too for the recommendation on the gaiters! One of the things I love about RUclips is that experiences and recommendations can be shared to benefit others. Two years! I remember watching your first videos. Doesn’t seem like I have been watching you that long. Being a dog person I so appreciate your concerns about Indi in certain situations. I can tell you’re a loving, caring person who cherishes your dog. ❤️
Awhhh, thanks Chris. What a lovely comment. Yes 2 years has passed by quickly. My first upload was actually in Oct 22, which is why it does not seem like 2 years. It took me from June to Oct to pluck up the courage to upload the 3 videos that I had made.
Carry a small roll of good tape. May have been able to temporarily patch the air mattress. 😉
Great advice. I actually had the tape but just no way to work out where the sneaky little spot was that was leaking. Submerging the mat in water is the easier way that I have found. Wasn't keen to put it in the freezing river, lol.
At 10.00 mins I saw a big bird walk by. Top left corner.
That is so funny, you made me go back and look, I was so curious. Must have been a trick of the eye that it looked big, as that is a tiny little South Island Robin. Super cute native bird that loves hanging around people, when you can find them.
Hi, I just found you. Nice video
Thanks so much Paula. Welcome 🙂
So many hot rocks around your fire. wrap one in a tee shirt and use it as a hot water bottle.
Yes I did contemplate that, it just felt a little bit sketchy and I was worried about melting my tent floor or mat or sleeping bag. Great survival option though if I had really needed it.
I can't even imagine how many hours of video you go through to edit. Lots of camera work for sure! Question: how many cameras do you have? Wow - you make me tired just watching you LOL. Thanks for another video! Your friend from way up North (Bay of Islands, North Island). 😊
I usually film 3-4 hours of footage, and then edit it down to 45minutes, trying to 'tell a story' but including only what is necessary to capture the emotion or mood of the trip, convey necessary information, and keep people engaged. There is an art to it and I am only just beginning on that learning journey. It is so much fun!!! I only have one 'proper' camera, and then I use my i-phone for b-roll, those quick close ups of meals, or the fire (just because it is SO much easier to set up) than the big camera on it's chunky tripod.
Nice post, are ya going out in snow camp this weekend? Could be a good dump south island 👍🏼👍🏼🤟🏼🤙🏼🖖🏼
Thanks 😁 oh I would love to head out in the snow. Forecast looks to be improving though 😭 so I don’t see any snow for the area I’m in and none on the horizon in the long range forecast. Never mind, other trips planned.
@@adventureot it was looking promising with that southerly, have a son that’s on a sea lord boat just of east coast up by Picton last two days they’re close in shelter every time they try going out just get tossed around and have to run back in , serfs up for some brave enough
Thanks for posting, your good company over coffee
brrrr, I imagine there are some big and cold seas out there at the moment. Brave indeed.
I am going to an event here with my tent and civil war stuff. Believe it or not, although it's supposed to be summer here in Northern Ireland we are getting strong winds, temperatures in the teens centigrade and lots of heavy showers. Feels more like Autumn lol😅
Hopefully you didn't have to battle too much with the wind. Tents and wind, not nice.
Hi looks very cool how cold is it bad luck with air mattress do you watch ab camping Tony he is also new Zealand
I can describe it as cold but not Tony on Mars cold, and you will know what I mean, and that will answer your other question (lol). The temperatures were roughly -2 to 4 degrees C while I was there.
Hey Cathy I am not able to donate...but what I can do is rewatch and like all videos as well as watch all the commercials..I think that helps...Is that correct?
Oh yes, for sure. That helps SO much. Thank you Anne!
