I’ve not noticed difference based on temp with thin barrels at 350 meters or beyond. I think it’s mostly mental this idea. Guys shoot hit then lose focus and hurt accuracy. It’s common to lose interest after meeting your expectations then repeating the process. Everytime you shoot you should shoot till you fail. Meaning you meet expectations then make it harder until you can’t meet it. This keeps your focus heightened at every target and comfortable knowing you plan to push till failure taking ego out of the equation also which hurts shooters progress.

I'm basically a pistol caliber levergun guy in my 70s. I do have one simple 16" AR15 consisting of a PSA Freedom upper and a standard Anderson lower. Carry handle sights. A $425 carbine.
In the woods where I live, all my neighbors are shooters, and we all have our own ranges, and we gather for informal shooting at times. Everyone has high dollar scoped AR's with tons of stuff on them. Yet I consistently outshoot them all with my plain Jane carbine with iron sights. I've seen a few start fiddling with their scopes, pulling parts off, and doing stuff with their phones with shooting programs. I just smile and watch them and their "technology" and keep on shooting my "cheap" simple carbine. Or I'll use one of my open sight leverguns and do the same thing.
I tell them its not the bow or arrow, it's the Indian.

From the perspective of someone who manufacturers your barrels (your welcome, btw❤️) I can tell you this: Reid mentioned your rifle (your barrel) not liking a particular load. This is the most critical element other than your skill. The harmonics need to be consistent and well... harmonious! It's a mathematic equation that involves: twist rate, length of barrel, weight of bullet and propellant consistency and bullet consistency. There is an ideal load for each barrel (or almost ideal.)
Buy three or four loads of different weights/mfgrs and group them. Find which is tightest. Use that one. It helps a lot too to purchase 1,000 or more of that ammo from the same lot.
A little reading before testing helps. If you had say a 20" 1/12 twist barrel, you'd never get any better accuracy than with a 55gr bullet. The twist won't stabilize heavy bullets. Just as a general rule.
Anyways, shoot a lot, barrels need to be sold.

A good friend of mine wanted a new barrel on his home defense rifle and showed me an HBar one he found. I told him to go with a Faxon 14.5" pencil with a pinned and welded flash hider. He said exactly your talking points at the beginning. So a few days later I took him out to my property, and we set up some targets at 100 yards. I had a rifle with the pencil barrel I recommended installed. I put a 3-9x scope on the rifle, put it in my lead sled to remove as much human error as possible, sighted it, let it cool, and fired some 3 round groups. 1.25-1.5" with one right at 1". I then mag dumped a mag, reloaded with good ammo, and shot 1.5"-2"- it opened up but not even 2x. I made him do the same thing and he got similar results (actually better- he's a good shot). Sold him. I installed the barrel for him, and he has a light, quick rifle that will actually do what he needed. I pretty much run pencil barrels on all my carbines now- wife and daughter love theirs as well since the whole rifle is lighter and easier for them to hold and carry. Good stuff!

Good shooting, Reid! Love that CAR (at least that's what I call all the old Colt carbines like that).
As a PFC at Ft. Carson, my company was running the battalion rifle qualification popup range. Since I'd been "volunteered" to help out on it, I was in the final string to go through the qualification - popup targets from 25m to 300m. Now, I'm not one to toot my own horn, but if I don't, nobody else will - I shot it clean with zero misses using my issued M16A1. Since there was still ammo left, the CO didn't want to have to turn any in so he ordered everyone off the line except me and my spotter. He then had me shoot until I missed - the entire range, which made the 300m targets cross range a little further out. I went to 124 rounds before I missed one. That barrel was pretty warm, not to mention probably pretty worn out, too - being as it was 1985 and the A1's were already being phased out. There was a bunch of talk about sending me to sniper school, but there was no sniper school back then.

    • @LRRPFco52

I love the M16A1. It was funny because when I went through OSUT, we had FN M16A2s, which I didn’t even know was a thing. I fully expected to see Colt logos on the lowers, but instead it was FN. Anyway, got to my first unit and we had M16A1s still with A2 furniture on them. Lightweight, great little rifles with no trigger issues like the A2 and the constantly-engaged burst clutch garbage. When we turned in out A1s for A2s in fall/winter of 1995, I was upset. When I got back from Korea and was in my 3rd Scout Platoon in fall of 1997 at Lewis, I saw my CO step out of the Company HQ Bldg one day with this little carbine in his hands. My buddies all said we got M4s in and I didn’t believe them. Sure enough, we turned in the muskets and drew out M4s, and I never touched an A2 again.

Even people who have been shooting awhile think that the more money they spend on what the operators on you tube have is what they need to have too. A basic M4 or an A2 style rifle is going to suit 99% of the people looking to buy a rifle. Learning Fundamentals to shooting is more important than anything else.

I think most people nowadays want to mount optics so I think they'd be better off getting a BCM upper and using an Aero lower. BCM makes a range of products from $650 up to $800-900ish but they're very good quality and would most likely last the owners entire life. The amount of people who actually "shoot out" a 5.56 barrel is very low.
A BCM will do 99% of what any other rifle on the market can do. It's no frills but it works.

Garand Thumb was able to get MOA accuracy from PSA's cheapest upper for like 3 or 4 thousand rounds before the groups started to open up, and he was running the rifle suppressed on a full auto lower, which is more hell on the heart of the rifle than the average Joe is ever going to put his rifle through.
While the saying "you get what you pay for" does play a role in the price vs quality of AR rifles, so does the concept of diminishing returns. For example, only a fraction of the AR manufacturers actually make their own receivers, so depending on what you buy, the extra cost is most definitely buying for brand name. Another example is triggers. I just built an AR-10 with a PSA lower parts kit, and the springs for the trigger were genuinely trash. Only spent and extra 15 dollars to pick up JP Enterprise springs. Made a night and day difference. Haven't confirmed the numbers but the instructions for those springs say the weight of the pull should be between 4 and 5 lbs when used with a mil-spec trigger (don't really need any lighter than that anyways), and the difference is night and day. While I like the Geissele trigger that was given to me and is in a different rifle, my said experience has convinced me that it's not going to be worth the extra 200 dollars to buy a Geissele for my AR-10. A mil-spec trigger with decent quality springs will do just fine.
At the end of the day, proper application of fundamentals matters most.

@@JohnnyReb2000 Garandthumb is a paid spokesman for PSA. His video is simply not trustworthy. Even the first time they grouped that upper they were only able to call it a 1moa barrel discounting "fliers" from their groups and those fliers would've made it easily a 1.7moa or maybe even a 2moa barrel which is honestly fine BUT what it shows is that Garandthumb and his crew can't really be trusted to honestly review PSA products. Either way it doesn't take long at all to hit 5k rounds and the barrel was basically spent by that point. You can EASILY build a much better rifle than a PSA by just watching for sales online. They're happening frequently because the gun industry is actually experiencing a bit of a slump just like every industry that requires the use of machine shops. Material prices have gone up pretty drastically in recent years.
You can get a barrel that has a better gas port size, higher quality machined bore, etc for just a little bit more money. PSA is notorious for having literally no quality control and there are thousands of videos on youtube of people having problems with PSA guns including their "duty grade" Sabre line.
Get a Rosco barrel, CMT handguard, Blem BCM upper and BCM low profile gas block+gas tube and bam, you have a pretty decent upper that will last much longer than the PSA and have better gassing if you plan to suppress. Throw in a microbest bcg and a radian LT or something and you're in business. Throw it on your favorite Aero lower.

I bought my 1st AR back around '85, an original Colt Sporter, delta handguards and a pencil barrel. This is back when a good hunting rifle shot 2moa, that pencil barrel sporter shot to 1moa easy and I kept shooting. A couple friends tried it out and the Colt was getting hot. I ran another mag thru it, same result. Just 1 ragged hole at 100 yards the size of a golf ball. I mounted a 4x12 Prostaff scope on the carrying handle and started varmint hunting with my 52gr handloads. It out shot my Rem 700 in 243 within 200 yards, equaled it at 300. I was ecstatic, couldn't believe it. A while after that I started building AR's and I do prefer the H Bar contours but I never saw a problem with the pencil barrels, heat or drifting and I built a few of those over the years. I even built an AR from cast off parts from my friends that "Just needed this part to shoot better". The only part I bought was a Rainier lower and a small parts kit. An A2 upper, M4 barrel with the mid cut, and "bad" BCG and trigger parts pretty much completed the build for less than 150 bucks. It shot great easily holding 1moa with a Weaver 1x4 tactical scope in the handle spitting green tip M855 Winchester ammo. Had some friends at camp I got the parts from and they shot the hell out of it. Couldn't touch the barrel but still held zero hitting old golf balls at 100 and 200 yards off my bench with a little Kentucky windage. 'Nuff said.

It's time for good men to start meeting in pubs again. Or do like I did and start liberty tree meetings at your town Square. We literally meet at the courthouse gazebo. Openly wearing our militia shirts around town. If every county formed a group of good patriots there'd be over 3,000 county groups that would send a message to every level of law enforcement that they can't just do what they want. Our local sheriff's department and the small town where the county courthouse is stand with us, openly publicly support us and we have their backs when doing the right thing and speak against them when they're wrong which has been a great method of keeping them honest.

First off that was damn good shooting, that is a lot harder than people think with iron sites.....very impressive Reid. Does a hot barrel mess with accuracy? It absolutely does, my 22-250 and 25-06 will open up fairly quickly as both have sporter barrels. Will accuracy open up in an AR enough to tell ringing steel not on a bench? Probably not. IMO that wasn't exactly heating up a rifle, that was an extremely slow rate of fire with very few rounds being shot with a LONG break walking down and back to the targets. Just one mans opinion, great video and even better shooting. Both my 14.5 inch and 20" AR's are pencil barrels.

AR-15s can be combat accurate (4 MOA) in almost any condition with most ammos. That would be 12" groups at 300ish yards.
If you want smaller groups, become a better shooter, get a precision free-float barrel, and use heavy match ammo to shrink that to sub-moa.
My go-to rifles shoot sub MOA with bthp 77's.
I also have a bolt rifle that strings 6" vertical then opens up cto 12 moa due to heating issues and a whip barrel.

Proper application of marksman skills and a little patience to overcome the short attention spans. A little more dry fire practice of the positions would go a long way. And granted I was using a 14.5 heavy barrel, free floated with a big scope, but used to be able to knock down 3x5” steel at 500M from the bench with nothing more than old surplus Israeli M193. On paper st 100, 1.5 inch five shot groups were the best on good days. So most rifles are a little more accurate than most users. This video is a great testament to

I have a 14.5" pinned and welded pencil ( actually a lightweight hansen profile ) free floated in one of my carbines...
I scoped it for grins n giggles...at 100yds it went from 1" groups to 1.5 inch groups after i got it hot ..i shot it off a rest on the bench to try to eliminate human error as much as possible...imo a 1/2" is nothing on a "fighting gun"
Modern manufacture barrels are stress relieved very well ...if the rifle isn't free floated stringing may occur but not enough to affect combat accuracy...imo for combat accuracy purposes whatever difference there is between cold and hot barrels is negligible...at 57 my eyesight is the main factor for me shooting at distance not the rifle/barrel combo

I think you’re either a little bit wrong on this one, or perhaps I’m just missing the point. There are some other guys on RUclips named 9-hole reviews who will talk about groups opening up when barrels get hot, and they are absolutely skilled enough shooters to trust on that front. They’ve got some testing in one of their older videos as well. If your point is that pencil barrels are still accurate *enough* once warm, I 100% agree. I haven’t experienced any significant issues shooting even very small targets with my M16a1 even a few mags in. Thank you for the video! God bless.

At the indoor range 100 meters ( it's a cop range that is open to the public on weekends) I get the same poi after the 1st or 50th shot. Yes, the barrel is hot after shot 15 or so but it doesn't seem to impact accuracy. I am now trying more to shoot free standing without support. Turns out to be rather challenging to get all required techniques executed properly . Do you have any tips on how to become a better shooter free standing or without support like a bipod? It's great to sometimes add realism with subdued color/partial obscured silhouette targets.
It teaches your eye and mind to search for legit targets. This reinforces shooter responsibility.
    Sidenote:
Firing the 5.56 through light concealment like blackberries bushes is highly terminal to the rounds stability and accuracy. I have placed a man size target behind 10' of light bush. Everyone knew exactly where it was. We would fire 30-50 rounds directly at it. Sometimes it would never be hit and sometimes just once and often keyhole impacts. If your threat is behind bushes, triple your shots minimum.

I have a CZ 600 Trail with a medium weight barrel. For what this gun seems designed for a pencil weight barrel would be a much more obvious choice. I can only guess that the factory wanted the barrel to not deflect as much with a suppressor hung out on the muzzle. Shame the factory no longer supports the barrel change feature. I would love to have a pencil weight 7.62x39 barrel and a 6.5 Grendel barrel for it.

Accuracy changing as the barrel heats up is highly dependent on barrel length, and barrel quality. Pencil barreled hunting rifles, with cheap and improperly stress relieved barrels, especially 24" or longer will show a change in accuracy as the barrel heats up, because the barrel itself will move will move with heat; think warping, but not as dramatic. It takes .016" of movement at the muzzle to move dispersion beyond 1MOA. If a rifle is capable of a high level of precision though, that will not change, regardless of barrel heat, even if accuracy is affected.
It's not been my experience that the precision, or accuracy of a pencil barreled AR changes, or if it does, it's not enough to notice. The fact that they're typically already short to begin with really helps.

A lot of people I know just by 20 different brands of ammo and have different rounds mixed in magazines and that's going to affect your performance especially if you're going from green tip to 55 grain to 77 grain otm. Or like some people I've seen they'll have steelcase mixed in😂

interesting story behind that. during development of the A2, barrels were showing deflection when tested with a barrel gauge (rod). They beefed up the barrel from the gas port forward and this became the "govt profile". Later they discovered the deflection was actually coming from interference because a burr develops at the gas port and it was deflecting the rod. but by this time the govt barrel spec was written in stone.

so this is just my two cents. i shot ten for ten in prone unsupported (which means all in the black) at a two x four target at the five hundred yard line on parris island (four times it's a long story so i wont bother you with the stupid details just now). back in 87 (and until i got out in 91) all we used were iron sights. i don't know how many rounds had been pushed through those barrels before they got changed (on the island especially) but i'm thinking it was a BUNCH. i went on to do the same thing four more times after i left the tropical paradise. so i'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's mostly about the individual. as long as you got "decent" gear you should do well enough to end your enemy. the mindset has more to do with marksmanship than most folks think especially when you got rounds coming back atcha. thanks again my man.
